The electrical pulses produced by the radiation was measured with an oscilloscope and a microcontrolled circuit associated to a LCD. The pyroelectric detector response to a radiation pulse showed linear relationship between the peak electric signal produced by the detector and the intensity of the x-ray pulses in some materials used. The PZT fe showed the most sensibility for a bigger voltage range being thus the most adjusted for measuring the intensity of radiation X. The precision, resolution, and sensibilities of the pyroelectric detector system, with the different pyroeletric sensors, associated with his low cost, relatively simple construction, and easiness for using the device, can turn it very useful for measuring the intensity of radiation produced by ortovoltage equipments.

Laser de baixa intensidade (670nm) na viabilidade do retalho cutâneo randômico em ratos / Low level laser therapy (670nm) on the viability of random skin flap in rats

Paulo Sérgio Bossini 28 February 2007 (has links)
Skin flaps are widely used in plastic surgery, mainly in repair surgeries. After this reconstructive procedure, one of the main consequences is the decrease of blood flow in the area, which can be responsible by tissue necrosis. In this context, a lot of studies have investigated treatments able to increase the viability of the flap and the low level laser therapy (LLLT) has been chosen as an efficient treatment to reduce post-injury inflammatory processes and to stimulate the formation of new blood vessels. However, the use of a wide range of fluences by different authors and the lack of standardized experimental conditions make it difficult to compare published results. The aim of this study was to investigate the dose-response effects of 670nm laser on the viability of random skin flap in rats. One hundred Wistar male rats were used in this study. The animals were divided into 5 groups: group 1 (control group); group 2 (treated with 3 J/\'CM POT.2\'); group 3 (treated with 6 J/\'CM POT.2\'); group 4 (treated with 12 J/\'CM POT.2\') and group 5 (treated with 24 J/\'CM POT.2\'). The skin flap was made on the back of all animals studied (dimensions: 10 x 4 cm) and before the sutures were done, a plastic sheet was interposed between the flap and the donor site. Laser irradiation was performed immediately after the surgery and on days 1, 2, 3 and 4 post-surgery. The irradiation was made punctually, on 24 points on the skin surface and around it. The percentage of the necrosis area of the flap was calculated by the paper template method at the day 7 postoperative. Moreover, a sample of the skin flaps was collected from 10 rats of each group, which were chosen aleatory, to performe the count of the blood vessels. The animals of all treated groups showed statistically significant differences when compared to the control group (necrosis area: 49, 92%). The necrosis area of the treated groups were 41,82% (group 2), 36,51% (group 3), 29,45% (group 4) and 20,37% (group 5). In the count of blood vessels, group 1 showed the mean of 65,2; group 2 - 92,6; group 3 - 105,5; group 4 - 128,7 and group 5 - 171,0. The ANOVA test, followed by the Tukey test, for multiple comparasions were used. The results showed that all experimental groups showed statistically lower values for the necrosis area compared to the control and a higher number of blood vessels in the skin flap. It can be observed that the best results were found in the animals of group 5 (p < 0,01). In addition, the Pearson coefficient showed a significant negative correlation between necrosis area and the number of vessels (-0,972 / p = 0,0001). This present study has demonstrated that the 670nm laser was efficient to increase the viability of the skin flap, at all fluences used, with a tendency of reaching better results at higher dosages (24 J/\'CM POT.2\').

The effect of skin phototype on laser propagation through skin

Karsten, Aletta Elizabeth 01 May 2013 (has links)
The use of lasers for diagnosis and treatment in medical and cosmetic applications is increasing worldwide. Not all of these modalities are superficial and many require laser light to penetrate some distance into the tissue or skin to reach the treatment site. Human skin is highly scattering for light in the visible and near infrared wavelength regions, with a consequent reduction of the fluence rate. Melanin, which occurs in the epidermis of the skin, acts as an absorber in these wavelength regions and further reduces the fluence rate of light that penetrates through the epidermis to a treatment site. In vivo fluence rate measurements are not viable, but validated and calibrated computer models may play a role in predicting the fluence rate reaching the treatment site. A layered planar computer model to predict laser fluence rate at some depth into skin was developed in a commercial raytracing environment (ASAP). The model describes the properties of various skin layers and accounts for both the absorption and scattering taking place in the skin. The model was validated with optical measurements on skin-simulating phantoms in both reflectance and transmission configurations. It was shown that a planar epidermal/dermal interface is adequate for simulation purposes. In the near infrared wavelength region (676 nm), melanin (consisting of eumelanin and pheomelanin) is the major absorber of light in the epidermis. The epidermal absorption coefficient is one of the required input parameters for the computer model. The range of absorption coefficients expected for typical South African skin phototypes (ranging from photo-sensitive light skin, phototype I on the Fitzpatrick scale, to the photo-insensitive darker skin phototype V) was not available. Non-invasive diffuse reflectance spectroscopy measurements were done on 30 volunteers to establish the expected range of absorption coefficients. In the analysis it became apparent that the contributions of the eumelanin and pheomelanin must be accounted for separately, specifically for the Asian volunteers. This is a new concept that was introduced in the diffuse reflectance probe analysis. These absorption coefficient measurements were the first to be done on the expected range of skin phototypes for the South African population. Other authors dealing with diffuse reflectance probe analysis only account for the dominant eumelanin. Both the epidermal absorption coefficient and thickness are important in the prediction of the fluence rate loss. The computer model was used to evaluate the effect of the epidermal absorption coefficient (a parameter dictated by an individual’s skin phototype) and the epidermal thickness on the fluence rate loss through the skin. The epidermal absorption is strongly wavelength dependent with the higher absorption at the shorter wavelengths. In the computer model a longer wavelength of 676 nm (typical for a photodynamic treatment (PDT) of cancer) was used. For the darker skin phototypes (V) only about 30% of the initial laser fluence rate reached a depth of 200 ìm into the skin (just into the dermis). For the PDT application, results from the computer model indicated that treatment times need to be increased by as much as 50% for very dark skin phototypes when compared to that of very light phototypes. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Physics / unrestricted

A Direct-Read, A Posteriori Golden Copy Method for Measuring SoC Cache Upsets

Poff, Evan D. 02 June 2022 (has links)
A method for measuring system-on-a-chip (SoC) cache upsets is presented and evaluated. In contrast to methods that predict cache contents through analysis or memory access patterns, this method uses system registers to read cache memories directly, thereby creating and checking golden copies to detect individual memory upsets during operation. The test method is driven by the device under test itself and does not require a user to set or know a priori the cache contents. A bare-metal implementation of this “direct golden method” on a Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC logged upsets in the device’s data cache, data tag, and TLB RAM memories during a neutron radiation beam test. For each of these memories, this direct golden method yields cache upset bit cross sections, such as 7.115 × 10^−16 cm^2 for the data cache. Confidence intervals for these bit cross sections overlap such intervals for three other methods, supporting this method’s validity and candidacy for future use.

Validizační studie testu Sémantické verbální fluence k diagnostice kognitivního deficitu u schizofrenie / Validation Study of Semantic Verbal Fluency Test for Assessment of Cognitive Deficit in Patients with Schizophrenia

Vavrošová, Kateřina January 2019 (has links)
The thesis addresses Semantic Verbal Fluency test and its potential as a diagnostics of cognitive deficit at schizophrenic population. Deficit of cognitive functions, presently considered as a core symptom of this disorder, substantially impacts daily life functioning. In particular, discriminant validity of Semantic Verbal Fluency test is examined in a mentally and neurologically healthy population as well as patients diagnosed with schizophrenia aged 18 to 40 years (N=339). Furthermore, results of profound analysis using a qualitative scoring system in a selected sample group (N=47) are presented. Moreover, the study investigates the association of selected demographic variables (gender, age, years of education) with results of Semantic Verbal Fluency test. Results of our statistical analysis reveal that patients diagnosed with schizophrenia performed significantly worse than healthy controls in all examined variables (total word count, total number of semantic clusters, total number of switches, mean cluster size, percent words in clusters, ratio of cluster switches) as compared with mentally and neurologically healthy subjects. Comparable results of the two research groups were attained solely in "number of hard switches" variable. Our results further indicate a significant association between...

Efeito da fluência na análise de pastilhas de materiais vegetais por espectrometria de emissão óptica com plasma induzido por laser / Effect of fluence on laser induced breakdown spectrometry analysis of pellets of plant materials

Carvalho, Gabriel Gustinelli Arantes de 10 February 2011 (has links)
Maiores intensidades das linhas Ca I 442,554, Mg I 277,983, P I 213,618, Al I 309,271, B I 249,773, Cu I 324,755, Fe II 261,187, Mn II 257,610 e Zn II 206,200 nm foram obtidas com fluências entre 35 e 60 J cm-2 e diâmetros de focalização entre 600 e 1050 \'mü\'m. Most recently, it was demonstrated that laser induced breakdown spectrometry (LIBS) constitutes an alternative for the simultaneous determination of macro- and micronutrients in pellets of plant materials. However, there is no information regarding the most appropriate fluence and laser focusing for analysis of pellets of plant materials. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of laser focusing and fluence on LIBS analysis of plants. The effect of particle size on LIBS analysis of pellets of plant materials as well as sample preparation approaches were also discussed. The experimental setup was designed by using a Q-switch Nd:YAG laser (5 n\'delta\', 360 mJ, 10 Hz, _ \'lâmbda\' = 1064 nm) and the emission signals were collected by lenses into an optical fiber coupled to an echelle spectrometer equipped with a high-resolution ICCD. Instrumental parameters consisted of 20 accumulated laser pulses, 2.0 \'mü\'s delay time and 5.0 \'mü\'s integration time gate. Pellets prepared from cryogenically ground plant leaves (90 % particles < 50 \'mü\'m; median = 10 \'mü\'m) were used as laboratory samples and 6 laser spot diameters (from 180 to 1050 \'mü\'m) at different laser fluences were evaluated. Results indicate that elements emission intensities increased with both laser fluence and spot diameter. Higher intensities for Ca I 442.554, Mg I 277.983, P I 213.618, Al I 309.271, B I 249.773, Cu I 324.755, Fe II 261.187, Mn II 257.610, and Zn II 206.200 nm emission lines were observed with fluences in the 35 - 60 J cm-2 range and spot diameters between 600 and 1050 \'mü\'m. Higher spot diameters improved mass removal and minimized repeatability drawbacks. It was observed that the coefficients of variation (CV) of site-to-site measurements decreased by using higher laser focusing diameters. By fixing the laser spot diameter at 750 \'mü\'m, the CV of measurements improved at least 2-fold for all analytes when 50 J cm-2 was applied in comparison to 20 J cm-2. These results can be attributed to a larger mass removal obtained at higher laser fluences and better laser sampling representativeness. Sensitivity did also increase with laser fluence but no significant differences were observed in the detection limits using 25 and 50 J cm-2. Although emission intensities increased with laser fluence the background emission and noise increased as well. On the other hand, particle size distribution of powdered samples affects the atomization and excitation efficiencies by laser induced plasmas. When larger particles are incompletely vaporized the resulting emission signals were lower than those obtained from smaller particles. In this work, significant improvements on emission intensities and CV of measurements were observed when pellets made with particles < 75 \'mü\'m were analyzed. No significant differences were observed (emission intensities and CV of measurements) in the analysis of pellets prepared with particles in the 20-75 \'mü\'m range. Pellets prepared with particles > 75 \'mü\'m presented cohesion drawbacks and resulted non uniform craters after laser ablation. The CV of measurements for most analytes in these materials was > 15 %. Therefore, similar particle size distribution between calibration and test samples is recommended to avoid physical matrix effects on laser-sample interaction

Analysis of an annular photoreactor using computational fluid dynamics.

Peres, José Carlos Gonçalves 14 March 2013 (has links)
Advanced oxidation processes are a promising technology for degradation of organic compounds resistant to conventional treatments such as phenol. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has recently emerged as a powerful tool that allows a deeper understanding of photochemical processes in reactor engineering by solving the coupled momentum, mass and radiation balances. This work aimed to investigate the UV/H2O2 process in an annular photoreactor using CFD and a more realistic kinetic model. A progressive approach was used to develop the CFD reactor model. First, the velocity fields were determined for three volumetric flow rates (30, 60 and 100 L/h). Two lamp diameters were considered to reflect the experimental configuration of the system. Tetrahedral meshes varying form 390,000 to 1,200,000 elements were analyzed to achieve grid independence. For accounting turbulence effects, four RANS models were tested: k-e, k-w, the Shear Stress Transport (SST) and the Reynolds Stress models (RSM). The velocity field was validated through comparison to RTD experimental data. Next step was introducing the mechanism of phenol degradation proposed by Edalatmanesh, Dhib and Mehrvar (2008) into the CFD model. This kinetic model is based on dynamic equations for all species. The fluence rate field was calculated by the radial model and by solving the radiation transport equation with the discrete transfer method. Simulations reproduced experimental data spanning a wide range of initial phenol concentrations, H2O2/phenol molar ratios and three values for lamp power. It was found that the velocity field depends on the volumetric flow rate: either it maintains a swirling motion through the whole reactor or might develop like a plug flow. The k-e model did not represent the RTD data accurately, and the velocity field therefore, since it is not appropriate for swirling flows. The other turbulence models showed good match of RTD, especially the k-w model. Simulations of phenol degradation deviated less than 8% from experimental data. It was possible verified that, due to the swirling inlet effects, reactants got concentrated close to the outer wall and migrated on the lamp direction along the reactor path. High radiation intensities close to the lamp surface created a layer around it where photolysis of H2O2 took place with higher rates. OH radicals were generated in that layer and transported towards the outer wall by convection. This caused most of phenol to be consumed in the second half of the reactor and accumulation of the radical near the lamp and the reactor outlet, since the pollutant in this area was already oxidized. The discrete transfer method predicted higher incident radiation intensity than the radial model, and higher concentrations of OH radicals as a consequence. Satisfactory results indicated that CFD was an appropriate tool for analyzing this reactive flow.

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the production of action verbs through the action fluency task, in comparison to classical fluency tasks (i.e., semantic and letter). In first instance, production has been studied, both quantitatively and qualitatively, in aging. We have shown that action fluency is impacted by healthy aging and is related to executive functions (Experiment 1) and working memory (Experiment 3) in older adults. This effect of age appearsto be affected by production time, with older adults producing fewer action verbs than younger adults in three minutes (Experiment 1) but not in one (Experiment 2) and two minutes (Experiment 3). In addition, older adults took more into account the time instruction during verbal fluency tasks (Experiment 2). The verbal association task’s data (Experiment 4) indicated that associations between nouns and verbs are modified by age. In second instance, the production of action verbs has been studied within movement disorders. We have shown that the production in the action fluency task and the adaptation to time instruction are impacted by Parkinson's disease (Experiment 5). We have also shown that action fluency is altered within an atypical parkinsonism, multiple system atrophy (Experiment 6). In essential tremor (Experiment 7), we have shown an impairment of action fluency while verbs treatment, in a lexical decision task, was not altered. In addition, surgery (deep brain stimulation) qualitatively modified the production of verbs in action fluency. Our data highlight the impact of healthy aging and movement disorders on the production of action verb, due to the highly executive nature of this process.

The role of prosody in French as foreign language reading fluency

Alazard, Charlotte 27 September 2013 (has links)
This study investigates the influence of oral training on reading out loud in French as a Foreign Language (FFL). Based on the implicit prosody hypothesis by Fodor (2002), we venture that working on the phonetic correction orally will improve speaking fluency, as well as reading fluency, and facilitate the decoding of the written test. We think that the impact of this training will be stronger with beginner than advanced learners. In order to test these hypotheses, we have conducted two longitudinal studies with English FFL students. We have measured the students’ fluency before and after training. The acoustics and perceptive results of the first study have confirmed our hypothesis and supported our methodology. In the second study, we follow up on these results on a larger-scale longitudinal study, designed to systematically compare the impact of two phonetics teaching methods on reading skills for FFL learners of French: the Articulatory Method (AM) and the Verbo-Tonal Method (VTM). We have also tested one of the presuppositions of the Structuro-Global Audiovisual Methodology (SGAV) – from which comes the VTM – according to which readings and writings activities should be delayed until students’ phonetic and prosodic skills have reached a basic and steady level. Our data support our hypotheses: only the students who have received VTM classes have improved their reading fluency. Furthermore, the introduction of reading activities during the training has caused a decline in all the students' fluency. Thus mastering second language prosody is essential before introducing reading or writing activities.
