Previous issue date: 2008-08-28 / This research is part of the DIRECT Project (focused on language at work)
e Estudos da Linguagem at PUC-SP. In this work, we examined the discursive
contexts of science in articles of the magazine Superinteressante and in texts of
Biology textbooks from the Systemic-Functional Grammar (Halliday, 2004 and
Halliday & Mathiessen, 2004). Among the several possibilities, the interpersonal
metafunction was chosen as a linguistic research for the analysis of the
participants relationships through their lexical-grammatical choices looking at
the writer and the reader s interaction, at how the participants are named and at
how they names themselves, at the roles given to them, and, still, we talked
about the pedagogical character, according to Bernstein (1984, 1990, 1996 and
1999) and Christie (1998, 2002 and 2005). For the Applied Linguistics which
investigates the language role in the construction of the social reality, it is
essential to understand the meaning constructions possibilities and the
interpersonal relationships, observed through the writing. Similarly, it is
important to study the relations between teaching and learning in these contexts
and to them, since we think of strategies and conduct methodological more
suited to the characteristics of such language. The methodology adopted was
Corpus Linguistics, counting on the usage of WordSmith Tools software (Scott,
2003). The results showed us that each discursive context has a set of
functions themselves, which are specific lexicon-grammar choices, according to
the constituent elements of each gender, according to Martin (1984, 1989,
Matthiessen, 2004). Dentre as várias possibilidades, a metafunção interpessoal
A metodologia adotada
1996c)

Previous issue date: 2009-08-18 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / This research aims to examine the textual and interpersonal metafunctions present in
the introduction to six scientific articles found in four different journals on Applied
Linguistics published by three Brazilian universities: D.E.L.T.A (PUC/SP), ALFA
(UNESP), Cadernos de Estudos Linguísticos and Trabalhos em Linguística Aplicada
(UNICAMP). In order to carry out the research on metadiscourse we will draw on the
work of different authors and on various theoretical approaches. In this respect,
Fowler (1991), whose attitude towards his instruments of analysis is eclectic,
acknowledges that the Hallidayan functional mode of analysis is the best model for
the study of the relationship between linguistic structure and social values. As well as
being another topic of concern in this study, the following concepts will also ground
the methodology of this research: (a) interpersonal metafunction (HALLIDAY, 1985;
1994; 2004) and tokens of attitude (MARTIN, 2000); (b) appraisal (MARTIN, 2000;
HYLAND, 1997; 1998; 2000; 2005; VERSTRAETE, 2001); (c) footing and alignment
A (PUC/SP), ALFA (UNESP) e
Cadernos de Estudos Linguísticos e Trabalhos em Linguística Aplicada (UNICAMP).
O exame do metadiscurso implica recorrer a teorias de origens várias. Nesse sentido,
atitude (MARTIN, 2000); (b) avaliação (MARTIN, 2000; HYLAND, 1997; 1998; 2000;
2005; VERSTRAETE, 2001) (c) footing e alinhamento (GOFFMAN, 1974); (d) polidez

Previous issue date: 2010-02-25 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This study is part of Project DIRECT: Em direção à linguagem do trabalho (PUCSP/
LAEL), and was developed under two projects, primarily through the Project
Network that aims to describe the production of scientific articles from different areas
in two languages - Spanish and Portuguese, and the second and current project
designed SAL (The Systemics Across Language Research Network), which analyzes
the use of grammar in different languages in its context English, Japanese,
Chinese, Thai, Spanish (Argentina) and Portuguese (Brazil). At this moment, in
Brazil, this project focuses on studying scientific papers. This thesis analyzes the
representation of the message and positioning of the author expressed in articles in
the area of Applied Linguistics. In this sense, this work is based on Systemic-
Functional Linguistics (SFL), especially in the writings of Halliday (1994/2004),
Halliday and Hasan (1989), Eggins (1994) and Thompson (1996), Martin (2003) and
Martin & Rose (2008), among others. The SFL explores the social functions of
language in use, considering language as a probabilistic system in which the choices
made by users of a language do not occur by chance, but according to the cultural
and situational contexts. Thus, the SFL conceives language in a socialsemiotic
perspective (HALLIDAY and HASAN, 1989) language as a system of meanings
related to social structure. Based on such considerations, this research studies the
data in context of use; watches them quantitatively, with the support of Corpus
Linguistics, and analyzes them qualitatively through SFL. The corpus of the study
consisted of 43 articles published from 2000 to 2007 in the Journal of Documentation
Studies in Theoretical and Applied Linguistics - DELTA. The general research
question is: what are the representation patterns of the message and the author´s
position expressed in articles in the area of Applied Linguistics? To answer this
question within the ideational metafunction, the verbal processes were analysed. The
use of verbal processes is assured when authors deem necessary to bring another
participant to the discourse, a voice of authority that will give their comments a
greater force, increasing truth-value. Whenever used, these processes confirm,
clarify and explain facts or situations, thus playing an indispensable role in support of
the arguments presented by the author before the theme of his text. In the context of
interpersonal metafunction, some features of the system mode related to the authors´
attitude, their commitment or modal responsibility before their text and interlocutor
were analysed. In relation to verbal processes, the results show low frequency of
citation, followed by projection and a high number of nominalization use, confirming
the employment of elaborated language rather than hypotactic reports or paratactic
citations. Interpersonal aspects revealed that the different choices and combinations
of language elements, in terms of interpersonal metaphor, indicate to the reader the
probability and possibility of the author´s involvement with the text, as well as his
commitment toward the discussion proposed in the article / Este estudo está inserido na linha de pesquisa Linguagem e Trabalho , do
duas línguas português e espanhol, e o segundo e atual projeto Projeto SAL (The
Argentina e português do Brasil.
A partir dessas considerações, a

and is theoretically based on an interactionist, social-cognitive approach to Text
Linguistics, complemented by Functionalism, Pragmatics, Linguistics, and
Education Science. With a focus on the organization of the
expository/argumentative text under the linguistic education perspective, the
purpose of this study is to verify the applicability of linguistic and education theories
to the pedagogic practice so as to analyze the methodological teaching procedures
adopted by Portuguese teachers from Public Schools for structuring such text. We
assume that the pedagogical actions aimed at the interaction between learned
and new knowledge help expand the students linguistic repertoire and
accordingly develop the communicative ability in written language. The analysis
material was obtained through questionnaires applied by Portuguese teachers and
the results obtained have shown that the interaction between learned and new
knowledge contributes to expand the students linguistic repertoire, but it is not
sufficient to build abilities relating to the efficient apprehension and use of linguistic
categories, which structure the expository/argumentative text. In order to possibly
filling this gap, we presented a teaching proposal based on problem situations,
grounded in the fact that continued linguistic education may help students
understand concepts related to the structuring of the expository/argumentative text / Esta dissertação situa-se na linha de pesquisa Leitura, Escrita e Ensino de Língua
categorias lingüísticas, estruturantes do texto expositivo-argumentativo.
relativos à estruturação do texto expositivo-argumentativo

A estrutura do grupo nominal no rema: a realização do dinamismo comunicativo / The structure of the nominal group in the Rheme: the realization of the communicative dynamismSaparas, Marcelo 15 May 2007 (has links)

Previous issue date: 2007-05-15 / This research examines the structure of the nominal group (NG) found within the Rheme
in distinguished discourse genres, namely academic writing, movie review and opinion
article. The NG has not been the object of many studies, and besides, it has been
studied within isolated sentences and, in general, in sentences inauthentically
constructed. However, there is no consensus, among researchers, neither on the
function, nor on the order of its constituents. There are many factors that influence the
constitution of the structure of the NG, among which the influence on the type of genre,
according to Bathia´s and Whitaker´s researches in 1991 and 1995, respectively. I
attempt, in this research, to: (a) examine authentic texts and not just isolated sentences,
as it has been done, since the literature shows us that the structure of the NG involves
textual concepts as those of Theme and Rheme, which, by extension, as we will see,
are overlaid with informational issues of Given and New. I attempt, therefore, to relate
the NG with the communicative dynamism to examine to what extent the constitution of
the structure of the NG reflect off this dynamism. This way will lead us to consider the
question of ensuring effective communication flow , through the notion of
communicative dynamism, that increases, in most cases, from the Theme to the Rheme,
according to Firbas (1974). Nevertheless, despite the fact that this research examines
the Rheme, one has to take the Theme into account, seeing that; according to Halliday,
quoted by Fries (2002), Rheme is all in the clause but the Theme . Here we run into a
problem: it is known that the definition of Theme has aroused polemics. I must clarify
that this research is conducted on the study of the NG within the Rheme, since this
position is generally taken by the information newness, fact which marks it by a higher
degree of communicative dynamism, and also because, although it occupies a crucial
role in the discourse, little has been researched about it. This being the case, the
objective of this research is to examine, in authentic texts, in three different discourse
genres, the constitution of the NG in the Rheme, to find out how this structure is
characterized in order to fulfill its function within the Rheme, in other words, the function
of increasing the communicative dynamism. Thus, it is basically supported by the
Systemic Functional Linguistics and by the Functional Sentence Perspective. Numerical
data, in terms of clauses and adjuncts, will show the lexico-grammatical elements that
constitute the NGs of the Rheme. Therefore, the data seem to indicate that the
communicative dynamism makes use of attributes and the simple constitution of the
greater part of the NGs in this process. A noteworthy fact is the widespread occurrence
of definite articles in places that serve to convey new information, the Rheme. There are
rare occurrences of noun clauses and adjectives in pre-head positions within the NG.
The role of the circumstances is also important in this context, for it seems to contribute
to explain the way the event occur, in space and time determined by it. There are
occurrences of comparisons with the preposition como ( like ), to explain through
comparisons the content that is hardest to learn / Este trabalho examina a estrutura do grupo nominal (GN) que ocorre no Rema em
atributivos (oração adjetiva, adjunto adnominal e predicativo) nesse processo, bem

Previous issue date: 2007-05-22 / This paper aims at studying the persuasive language of horoscopes from online versions of the following American newspapers: Los Angeles Times, New York Daily News, Chicago Tribune and San Francisco Chronicle. 2544 horoscopes have been selected during 53 days, and 943 conditional structures have been found. Latour and Woolgar (1979) state that the objective of rhethoric persuasion is to convince the participants that they haven t been convinced, and Halliday (1985) points out that persuasion tends to be highly implicit and to avoid attitudinal language, which is usually associated with interpersonal meaning. The horoscope is a text genre, thus, according to Martin (1984), it can be separated in stages, each of those with its specific function. 37,06% of the analized horoscopes present some kind of conditional structure, with the explicit connector, if (30,75%), or implicit ones (69,25%). Protasis occurs, mostly (71,15%), preposed to the apodosis, functioning as sentence Themes, and, therefore, restricting the content of the Rhemes. The language of horoscopes also presents elements of metadiscursive modality, such as person markers, hedges and emphatics. Besides, one of the stages consists of a kind of truth, a belief that has its roots in polular culture and that helps the reader rescue a specific intertext that the hosroscope writer previously had in mind. In addition, there is the theory of frames (Bednarek, 2005), responsible for text coherence which is attributed, in this case, by the text readers -, that focuses on the relation among text, context, world knowledge, and coherence. Thus, by reading a horoscope, the reader interacts with the text, giving it the most coherent meaning according to their own world knowledge. These factors prepare the readers for the reading and, therefore, they do not question what has been predicted by the author and, at the same time, they act impelled by the power of this genre. The same factors also prevent the horoscope writers from making mistakes regarding their predictions. All that makes horoscopes a highly pesuasive text genre. This kind of persuasion is implicit, for it makes use of a combination of specific lexico-grammatical choices and specific contexts. Regarding the lexico-grammar, this paper focuses on structures that convey conditional meanings, emphasizing Géis s (1971) concept of invited inferences and the relation between conditional structures and Theme, and conditional meaning. It also refers to Critical Discourse Analysis (Fairclough, 1992; Fowler, 1991), concerning the social function of language, and to Halliday s (1985; 1994) functional model, for the connection between language structures and social values. People are interested in horoscopes because they seem to work as a source for advice and entertainment as, according to Spengler (1969), religious faith has been replaced by other beliefs. The metodology adopted is interpretative, based on quantitative data / Esta pesquisa propõe-se a estudar a linguagem persuasiva dos horóscopos, coletados online, dos seguintes jornais dos Estados Unidos: Los Angeles Times, New York Daily News, Chicago Tribune and San Francisco Chronicle (USA).

of patients diagnosed as schizophrenics. To do this, the theoreticalmethodological
approach of Systemic- Functional Linguistics and Corpus
Linguistics has been taken on board. The corpus consists of the
transcriptions of 12 psychiatric interviews, with 12 schizophrenic patients,
that took place in private and public centers of mental health, The general
question is: what are the representational patterns of reality suggested by
the discourse of the patients? To answer it, I analyze the ideational
metafunction (Halliday, 1994), focusing on the processes elected by the
schizophrenic speakers to represent the ongoing events of the external
and the internal world. So, the research approaches the patients
discourse in terms of lexico-grammatical and discourse-semantic
patterns. Results show frequent occurrence of negative polarity operators
and modalizations. The attribution of negative features to themselves and
to entities, places, things and people, the recount of negative events, as
well as Instances of the projection of an empowered identity, which can
Assim, a pesquisa aborda o
negativas tanto a si próprios quanto às entidades, lugares, objetos e
pessoas em geral. O relato de acontecimentos negativos também foi
constante.

Previous issue date: 2008-09-25 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / As part of the wider context of Project DIRECT: Em direção à linguagem do
trabalho (PUC-SP/LAEL), this study aims at investigating grammatical elements
that contribute to text cohesion and organization, both below (verbal and nominal
group) and above clause (conjunction and pronominal reference), in the framework
of Systemic-Functional Grammar (Halliday, 1994). It analyses the text structures
(the logical metafunction) of two magazines: the North American Newsweek and
the specifically directed to EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students, the
Brazilian version of Speak up. The study makes use of the computational program
Wordsmith Tools (Scott, 1999). Results show that the Speak up texts have a
structure with more elements of what Bathia (1983) calls language simplification,
characterized by lesser complexity in logical terms: more simple verb tenses,
usually only represented as suffix in the process (simple past, present and future
tenses); more nominal groups with premodifiers and postmodifiers with
prepositional phrases; more coordinate conjunctions and first-person pronouns,
whereas the Newsweek texts evidence greater linguistic elaboration in terms of
textual complexity due to the frequent use of: complex verbal tenses, with
auxiliaries (perfect and progressive tenses, future with going to and passive);
lexically-dense nominal groups due to extensions resulting from information
chaining through the construction of successive nominalizations and defining
relatives clauses; besides reduced clauses, subordinate conjunctions and thirdperson
pronominal), no arcabouço teórico da Gramática Sistêmico-Funcional (Halliday,
O estudo faz uso do programa computacional Wordsmith Tools (Scott, 1999).

Previous issue date: 2008-08-27 / This study aims to investigate argumentative essays written by second grade
students attending the first year of evening classes in a public high school in Sao
Paulo. The factors which have led me to do this research are two: the proposal made
by the State Secretary of Education through the necessity to rise the level of the test
grades administered by the School Achievement Assessment System of the State of
Sao Paulo (SARESP), and students concern to improve their writing skills so as to
get into university and the labor market. The corpus of this research consists of 70
argumentative essays, two of which have been chosen for the analysis. The criteria
used for the analysis are recentness and sameness of theme. For the analysis of the
data of this qualitative study we have drawn upon the Systemic Functional Linguistics
of Halliday & Hasan (1976), Halliday & Hasan (1989) and Eggins (1994), as well as
on more recent researches which have enriched the notions of cohesion and
coherence. Thus, as far as text coherence is concerned, its analysis has been carried
out by taking into account the notions of cultural and situational contexts. The
analysis of text cohesion, on the other hand, has been made by observing lexical
choice, maintenance of participants and use of conjunctions. The results have shown
that the non-observance of those criteria may explain why the texts examined lacked
both coherence and cohesion, which affects the argumentative effect desired by the

Previous issue date: 2008-09-24 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / Young people have been experiencing nowadays, a new type of gathering:
the virtual talks in chat rooms, in which they are able to discuss openly and
straightforwardly on themes related to their age and way of life. In this special
occasion, their behavior and response, concerning particular issues, are
somewhat different from those observed in other contexts, like school. Said
occurrence led me to conduct this research, in which I seek to resolve the
following questions: How do adolescents build their point of view in different
social contexts, in a real environment (school class), and in a virtual one (chat
room)? What does this point out to? Furthermore: How could the diversity in
responses found in distinct environments contribute in the development of
more effective methodologies on the teaching of the Mother Tongue?
The theoretical tool herein used by me was Martin & White s Appraisal
System (2005), which is derived from metafunctional studies developed by
Halliday (1989, 1994) in Systemic-functional Linguistics, more precisely the
Interpersonal Metafunction which deals with the functions that people take on
social relations/interactions.
After the analysis of the available data, and the perception of significant
differences in the adolescents written production in both researched
environments, it was clear to acknowledge the link between language and
context, and also the fact that chat rooms could become an excellent
environment for teachers to work, once they present themselves able to
perceive their students experiences and thus propose learning strategies fit to
E ainda: Como a
