Bioteknologins politik och berättelsernas transformativa makt / The Politics of Biotechnology and the Transformative Power of NarrativesJohansson, Anders January 2002 (has links)

This thesis aims to respond to the need of adjust GMO politics for meeting the demands of the late-modern society and the changed condition that follows from an accelerating complexity. The central objective for this study is to contribute with a narrative understanding of Sweden’s GMO politics with the purpose of examine an alternative possibility for formulating and assessing the politics of biotechnology. This is done by investigate Sweden’s politics of GMO through a narrative approach. I have reconstructed and carried out a Comparative analyzes of these narratives. This was the first of two objectives with this thesis. The other objective was to relate the political practice with the contribution and insights of Paul Ricoeur as a point of departure. My effort has been to build upon his contribution of narrative philosophy and fruitful conceptual resources and to reach an understanding of the advantage of a narrative approach in politics. This advantage lies in that it can provide an understanding of the narrative aspects in our daily lives. This would bring sensitivity and reflexivity to the political context. With this sensitivity and reflexivity it hopefully can separate irresponsible politics from responsible politics. This could be done by incorporate the result from this study. A responsible environmental politics departs from the precautionary principle in decision-making, gaining knowledge from interdisciplinary research and tries to correspond to the narrative structures in people’s daily lives. The narrative approach brings a deeper understanding for that political thought and practice is not reducible to other forms of human action.

Title: A Colorful Consumer Behavior Level: Final assignment for Bachelor Degree in Business Administration Author: Martin Myhrman & Robin Uppman Supervisor: Jonas KågströmDate: 2015 – 05 Aim: The background of our study was grounded in the fact that the research of colors impact are limited in the field of marketing. Studies have also shown that future research should examine which factors that affect consumer’s perception of genetically modified products. The aim of our study is as follows: “The aim of this study is to examine how colored labeling might compensate for the negative perception of genetically modified products.” Method: In this study we have performed an experiment. The experiment took place at a University in Sweden and we had 120 respondent commits. The respondents were asked to perform a taste test in which the color of a label was manipulated between three test groups (red, blue and green). The collected data was analyzed with IBM SPSS Statistics 22, further the results were interpreted and discussed. Result & Conclusions: Our main finding is that the color red on a negative label generated a lower willingness to pay than both blue and green. This result confirms previous research which among other things says that the color red trigger an aggressive mindset and encourage analytical thinking. Furthermore we have seen trends that indicate that colors do not affect the taste and health perception. Suggestions for future research: Many of our results have not been statistically significant, which probably depends on our relatively limited sample, further research should replicate our study with a wider sample. In addition to this suggestion we would like to see further research concerning:- Colors impact on the perception of other GMO products.- The impact of color shades on consumer behavior.- The relation between brands and colors in buying decisions. Contribution of the thesis: Our contribution to people working with marketing is that they should be aware that colored labels may affect the consumer perception. Furthermore we have shown that colors affect consumer’s willingness to pay, which is our contribution to the field of marketing.

The introduction of GMOs into agri-business has brought forth many public concems,
such as the type of agriculture or the kind of foods we choose for our future, the
safekeeping of our ecosystems and our cultural heritage, or matters of justice linked to
ethics and equity. Our argumentation is that only a democratic process that offers to the
citizens the possibility to express their views and concems on the development of GMOs
will allow the authorities to make enlightened decisions on these matters. Moreover,
many govemments have already shown interest in opening communication lines with the
general public on the stakes created by these new technologies.
This study analyzes different forms of public participation in the decision-making process
conceming GMOs in three different countries, France, Switzerland and Canada. These
models have been divided into three categories : the instruments of direct democracy,
participation of different members of society in the evaluation processes, and public
debates. We note that in spite of the efforts of the govemments to democratize decisionmaking
in these matters, many factors such as technical reasoning into which decisions
are inscribed as weIl as the inherent gaps of the representative model, prevent from taking
the opinions of citizens into consideration. Therefore, we should ask ourselves about the
relevance and the convenience of using the referendum to treat the concems associated
with GMOs.

Customer Perceptions of Organic Certification StandardsKokic, Damir, Pedersen-Slaatten, Marcus Brando January 2019 (has links)
Along with the organic food market development, two directions within the industry has appeared, the traditional organic farming and the biodynamic organic farming. The thesis aimed to derive at which organic certification of organic food in the Swedish food market is most appropriate to the organic movement, based on customer perceptions of Swedish University students. The thesis looked at KRAV, a certifier of traditional organic farming, and Demeter, a certifier of biodynamic organic farming. A quantitative method was used to gain a deeper understanding of the consumer perceptions of organic certification standards and the comparison of KRAV and Demeter, and which certification consumers preferred. A survey was distributed in order to find out the consumer perceptions. The findings of the thesis were split into two parts, each answering one research question. The first part showed that people adhered to the standards of Demeter, with average means skewed towards their side of the scale. The second part identified five hypotheses to be tested against each other, and found customer confusion to be the main impacting factor of consumer perceptions of organic food standards.

Rastreabilidade de soja Roundup Ready® em produtos agrícolas e derivados: produção de materiais de referência e uso de marcadores AFLP / Roundup Ready® transgenic soybean traceability in agrifood products and derivatives: reference materials production and the use of AFLP markersAbrahão, Othon Silva 18 March 2008 (has links)
The introduction of soybean transgenic cultivars brought several changes in both world trade and regulation rules for producers and consumers, mainly in relation to certification, traceability, biosafety and labeling. Soybean is one of the largest commodities in the world trade and responsible for half of the Brazilian export incomings, present as raw material or ingredient in significant part of foods in the local market. The adoption of the threshold of 1,0 % for nonintentional presence of GMO in food, requiring obligatory labeling for contents above this level, demands reference materials for the control and quantification of transgenics in raw material and processed food, allowing the harmonization of results from different methods and laboratories, currently being produced exclusively by the Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements - IRMM, in Belgium. Due to the high costs and difficulty to obtain these products, candidate reference materials of Roundup Ready® transgenic soybean (RR soybean) were produced at levels of 0 %, 0,1 %, 0,5 %, 1,0 %, 2,0 % and 5,0 % of transgenic material, using cryogenic milling and mixing techniques, with subsequent verification by real time PCR. Tracing of Roundup Ready cultivars by origin was done through AFLP molecular markers in a total of 29 RR soybean cultivars: 21 Argentinean and 8 Brazilian cultivars. Fingerprinting was possible in 15 Argentinean and all Brazilian cultivars through 6 bands obtained from 4 selective pairs of primers, singled out from 67 different combinations of selective primers. For PCR analysis of processed food, primers were designed using freeware sources over the Internet (Primer3, NetPrimer, Rebase) for short fragments amplification (around 100 bp). Primers sets for the amplification of lectin and CP4 EPSPS gene fragments from RR soybean were designed for the detection of these genes in the 29 RR soybean cultivars and three soybean based food matrices, with the results validated by endonucleases digestion and sequencing

Controvérsia, política e risco: enquadrando os transgênicos nos portais Estadão Digital e Folha de S. Paulo / Controversy, politics and risk: framing the transgenics agenda in S. Paulo State\'s Press (Estadão Digital and Folha de S. Paulo)Felipe dos Reis Campos 07 December 2017 (has links)
In line with previous research in Communication Studies, this work explores the question of “transparency” in risk evaluation, especially in regard with scientific controversies and media polemics about pesticides and GMOs. Questioning a principle never defined, yet central, this study tries to answer the following question: What are the limits in the implementation of a “transparency” principle? I particularly look at the “Seralini Affair” that follows the publication of a controversial study about pesticides and GMOs’ health effects. In the first part of my research, I analyze the transition from transparency to digital transparency in the mirror of the evolution of the public sphere from modern to postmodern society. The second part of my work is exclusively dedicated to the “Seralini Affair.” While questioning the role of controversies and polemics in the “society of risk”, I wonder how the “transparent society” deploys in a postmodern society facing increasing risks. Finally, the last part of this research analyzes the paradoxical injunctions of transparency I observed in the “Seralini Affair.” Beyond these injunctions to implement more transparency, is there still room for trust and truth-speaking in our risk societies?

Consumer Knowledge, Perception and Attitudes of Unlabeled Genetically Modified Foods of an Educated Population in the State of KentuckyWaite, Aldious A 01 July 2017 (has links)
Genetically modified (GM) foods technology is a novel idea for improving food and crop production, but the supposed health risk of GM foods, such as possible negative long-term health effects to humans, animals and the environment, have provoked the European Union to create assessment protocols to monitor and regulate the safety of GM foods and crops. This research investigates the perception and attitudes of unlabeled GM foods of the WKU faculty and staff. A survey was administered via WKU Qualtrics, and chi-square tests were performed to see how the benefits and disadvantages of GM foods may affect the purchasing decisions of the educated consumer, and to see if the WKU faculty and staff wants GM foods to be labeled or not. The research confirms that the benefits and disadvantages of GM foods do affect the purchasing decisions of the educated consumer. The survey revealed that about 60% of the WKU faculty and staff buys GM foods, and 40% do not buy GM foods, and approximately 92% of the WKU faculty and staff wants GM foods to have proper labeling and information. The research provides information about how the educated consumer of Kentucky may feel about unlabeled GM foods.
The research also recommends some trade-off benefits of GM foods, including that approximately 35% of the WKU faculty and staff reported that they would buy GM foods if it helps to lower cholesterol and fight diabetes, and 20% say they would buy GM foods if it is cheaper than other foods. Some of the disadvantages of GM foods are that the pesticide chemicals used in the production methods of GM foods are toxic to humans, animals, and the environment. Approximately 54% of the participants say they would not buy GM foods because they are concerned about how it may affect their long-term health, and about 35% reported that they don’t buy GM foods because of improper labeling and information.
