L’archive du "Coup de dés" : étude critique de la réception de "Un coup de dés jamais n’abolira le hasard" de Stéphane Mallarmé (1897-2007) / "Un coup de Dés jamais n’abolira le Hasard" by Stéphane Mallarmé : the "Archive" : critical Study of its Reception (1897-2007)

Roger, Thierry 25 September 2008 (has links)
This work, which intends to break with a fairly intuitive vision "effect of Un Coup de dés" in the twentieth century, seeks to establish his "archive", according to a dual perspective : that of “archivistic” on the one hand, which leeds us to identify positive references to the poem, between 1897 and 2007, mainly in french, that of the “archaeology” on the other hand, which involves the interpretations’ interpretations. After an overview of the immediate reception, we describe the gradual process of text institutionalization, through the various "speech" that have been held (first part). Then, to illustrate the multifaceted dimension of this reception, this work deals with differents transpositions of the poem outside the realm of poetry : image, stage, music, theory, and philosophy. We describe then "practices", which have shed light on the particularity of the poem, while being informed by him. Before concluding, we outline the proper literary legacy of Un Coup de dés - the formal rewrites - by addressing the query of genre (second part). The research concludes with a critical assessment highlighting the major interpretation’s conflicts, while showing the double dimension of the text, both aporetical and epiphanic.

Arquitetura, cidade e cinema: vanguardas e imaginário / Architecture, city and cinema: avant-Gardes and imaginary

Lezo, Denise 10 May 2010 (has links)
In the first decades of the twentieth century, in the cultural context of the European Avant Gardes, architecture, city and cinema had established between themselves different forms of dialogue, including the creation of fictional architectures and cities destined exclusively for the films. Through the analysis of three films - Aelita (Yakov Protazanov, USSR, 1924), Metropolis (Fritz Lang, Germany, 1927) and Things to Come (William Cameron Menzies, 1936), this work seeks to identify the ways that these cinematographic architectures and cities, developed for the European cinema in the interwar period, had reflected, reformulated and released for the masses such issues as: the life in the metropolis and the ambiguities and contradictions imposed to the metropolitan inhabitant; the new technologies, and the ways they impacted the daily lives and incited the imagination; the formal experimentations of the avant-gardes and the pursuit of overcoming the boundaries between art and life; the new conceptions of architectures and cities, and its intention to create new logics of space and urban organizations, which could contribute to the creation of a new man and a new society.

Les gardiens de la cité : la Garde républicaine (1871-1914) / Guardians of the city : the Republican Guard (1871-1914)

Dagnicourt, Éric 24 October 2013 (has links)
The Republican Guard, between 1871 and 1914, an atypical unit of the French Gendarmerie (military police), is comprised of joint military forces, combining horseback and foot patrols, which is mainly on duty in the city of Paris. The goals of this thesis are to specify its connection to the previously existing units, describe its specific character in terms of organization, operations and infrastructures, to decipher and dissect its domestic and municipal service in order to compare it with that of other French military regiments and Gendarmerie legions, to define the role of these “guardians of the city” within the Gendarmerie of this period and compare it with that of our current Republican Guard.Divided into three parts, this thesis consecutively examines :- the components of the Guard’s infantry and cavalry, its regimental organization and administration, its various inner mechanisms and composition, its recruitment, symbolism and uniforms;- its daily life, military and municipal training, barracks and discipline;- the public roadway police in Paris and the forces which ensure it, the influence of police headquarters on the Guard, its role in maintaining and reestablishing order. The working hypothesis is to show how different the Republican Guard of the Belle Epoque is compared to the current Guard, so similar to it in its shape, performances, traditions, and establishment, so far-removed in its sole purpose of presidential guard, guardian of the French Republic’s establishments.

L'orphisme. Birth, evolution and heritage of a forgotten avant-garde

Sawczuk, Magdalena 22 June 2018 (has links)
The notion of Orphism was born on the eve of the World War II. Forged by Guillaume Apollinaire, it served him to describe a new and bold art of his friends, especially those concentrated around Robert Delaunay. However, the notion was already troublesome back then: ill-defined and unclear, it was used by the poet in a vague way. Since then, the controversies continue to mount and in a century that elapsed since the invention of the notion, everything concerning Orphism is questioned, even its very existence. Contesting this negationist approach, we propose in this thesis to analyze the artistic production and conceptions of this period under a new light. We are distancing ourselves from the traditional labels of “-isms” and we are using the Orpheus myth – as suggested by Apollinaire – as a tool which allows us to reanalyze the art from the beginning of the 20th century. This new analysis – of artists’ career paths, their fascinations, relationships between different artistic centers and between people involved in this avant-garde – and the comparative analysis of artworks serves to prove that what we call Orphism is not an artificial concept, applied in an arbitrary manner to the somewhat accidental and independent career paths of different artists. On the contrary, Orphism is a logical and consistent evolution, whose true importance and impact was never fully appreciated. By using the Orpheus myth as a guiding thread, we are bringing to light the main lines of the evolution of Orphism: the origins and interpretation of the notion and the conception, the historical and artistic context in which the movement was born and was evolving, the relationships between its actors, artists’ inspirations and, last but not least, the stylistic evolution of Orphism over the time.

Corps à l'oeuvre, à l'ouvrage et à l'épreuve : sociohistorique des arts de la performance, années 1970 / Bodies at work. A Sociohistory of Performance Arts, 1970's

Barbut, Clélia 12 December 2014 (has links)
« Performance art », « body art » and « happenings » appeared on the art scene between the 1960s and the 1980s. The human body was at the heart of these artistic movements, to the extent that many artists embodied their own works. Within such creative processes and productions, the body undeniably became a legitimate subject of attention and value. This dissertation describes the initial stages of the art movements aforementioned, and argues that they must be analyzed as sociological phenomenons. Never before had such a larger of artists within the same time period decided to focus on the entity of the body itself, to use and misuse it so intensely. Observing their approaches through the lens of the body allows us to voice critical questions about the anatomy of a creative work - gender relations, interactions with the viewers, political commitments, and marketing. This sociohistorical research studies three landmark art scenes of the time (France, the east coast, and the west coast of the USA), by delving into a documentary material of archives (interviews, reviews, essays, manifestos, notations and photographs). The thesis begins with a sociological inquiry which measures the visibility of these artistic movements ; it is followed by a history of the institutional and critical apparatus which described the atistic skills and statements at work within body actions and happenings ; lastly, the dissertation presents a topography of the workings of the body, drawn from the artists’ performances and theoretical stances, as well as art critics’ viewpoints and analyses.

Percursos da formação de Chris Marker: cinema militante, dissidência e profanação / Paths in the formation years of Chris Marker: militant cinema, dissidence and profanation.

Leonel, Nicolau Bruno de Almeida 28 May 2015 (has links)
Chris Marker is an intriguing filmmaker who produced unconventional political documentaries over almost sixty years. After an active militancy, and inserted in the heart of crucial events in France and Europe, and working on a literary career as an editor, essayist and novelist, it is natural that his films, viewed in isolation, could cause the most equivocal interpretations. This research seeks, through a detailed analyses of his films and writings, to work with the debates that were important on the French national and global life of his time. Always thinking about the decisive events of the Front Populaire in the period (1936), the occupation of France by the German Nazis and the participation of Marker in the struggles of the Resistance. All of this puzzeled elements seek an interpretation for many of the seemingly confusing aspects of his filmography. Throughout the chapters of this research, we seek to approach, with this documentation, texts, statements, debates, films phrases, the enigmatic biographical elements of his uncanny formation. Marker is known by the discretion about himself. Working on his years of youth and formation, we see that when aged 16, in high school in Paris and the 1936 year in France, discussing at length the Front Populaire, we seek to work about Chris Marker influence by the personalist philosophy of Emmanuel Mounier and then by Esprit and later in it\'s integration in the struggles of resistance. Following in the footsteps of the filmmaker, this work discusses the impact of this years in his militant life, including the training of workers film clubs. All this history is permeated by scenes and debates of his future documentaries. Finally, the research addresses the issue of militant cinema, analyzing L\'ambassade (1973), the solidarity with the Chilean Popular Unity and the struggle against the totalitarian latin american dictatorships, and a short film-portrait of the editor Maspero. We end our research with a debate on A. Medvedkine and V. Mayakovsky and the profanation of modern art, trying to investigate how the work of Chris Marker coincide with militant cinema, experimental cinema, film essay and documentary cinema.
