The Rebirth Of ConsciousnessBlaszak, Urszula 01 January 2007 (has links) (PDF)
Human beings encounter cascades of a plethora of experiences, one after another, every single microsecond of our lives. There are many things happening around. The world is full of events and occurrences. As they happen, the mind reacts to every individual input. This is a very exhausting and difficult. Thus, people have developed a process of self-defense against this horrible mishmash of information. Their minds have this amazing capacity of sorting them out and making sense out of them. Humankind's survival depends on that. If one does not sort all this information out, one might not be able to make a simplest decision. As humans process the information, they learn to ignore and forget. They focus on their feelings and emotions. They forget the logic. The oversimplification process begins. Humans create rigid systems of oversimplified formulas. They assign adjectives to things, occurrences, and other people. The number of those adjectives is small. After assigning, those adjectives obscure everything else. A new world is created, stupid, limited, lazy, and in the end making humans very easy to control. What starts as a basic survival process ends up as a tool one can use to destroy the owners of the mind. In the end, the birth of consciousness leads to its death. My work fights this process. It aims to put a person back into that state of shock created by a mishmash of information and thus create the rebirth of consciousness.

The relationship between capital structure, performance and replacement of CEO in firms listed on the Nairobi Securities ExchangeOtieno, Odhiambo Luther 01 1900 (has links)
This study investigated the relationship between capital structure, performance and replacement of chief executive officer in firms listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE). Data was collected from a sample of 37 firms listed on the NSE over a period of 23 years, from 1990 to 2012. The analysis was conducted at three stages. The canonical correlation technique was employed to investigate the bi-directional relationship between capital structure and performance and to select competing indicators of performance and capital structure. Second, the general linear model (GLM) procedure was used to test the effect of performance and ownership structure and to test the effect of capital structure and ownership structure. Lastly, the generalised estimating equation (GEE) was used to assess effects of performance, capital structure and ownership structure on change in CEO.
The results revealed that a bidirectional relationship exists between capital structure and debt capital. The indicators found to be useful in examining the relationship between performance and capital structure are asset turnover ratio and total debt to the total asset ratio. The findings support the efficiency hypothesis but not the franchise hypothesis. The results also indicated that firms with a low asset turnover are with a low asset turnover are 3.045 times likely to change CEO compared to firms with a high asset turnover. The results also indicated that firms with high leverage (debt) are he results also indicated that firms with high leverage (debt) are 3.430 times likely to change CEO compared to firms in low leverage, while the firms with medium leverage are are are are 6.491 times likely to change CEO.
Therefore managers should not be passive when it comes to choosing between equity and debt capital played a disciplinary role on firms listed on the NSE. / Business Management / DCom (Business Management)

Spatial ecology of marine top predatorsJones, Esther Lane January 2017 (has links)
Species distribution maps can provide important information to focus conservation efforts and enable spatial management of human activities. Two sympatric marine predators, grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) and harbour seals (Phoca vitulina), have overlapping ranges but contrasting population dynamics around the UK; whilst grey seals have generally increased, harbour seals have shown significant regional declines. A robust analytical methodology was developed to produce maps of grey and harbour seal usage estimates with corresponding uncertainty, and scales of spatial partitioning between the species were found. Throughout their range, both grey and harbour seals spend the majority of their time within 50 km of the coast. The scalability of the analytical approach was enhanced and environmental information to enable spatial predictions was included. The resultant maps have been applied to inform consent and licensing of marine renewable developments of wind farms and tidal turbines. For harbour seals around Orkney, northern Scotland, distance from haul out, proportion of sand in seabed sediment, and annual mean power were important predictors of space-use. Utilising seal usage maps, a framework was produced to allow shipping noise, an important marine anthropogenic stressor, to be explicitly incorporated into spatial planning. Potentially sensitive areas were identified through quantifying risk of exposure of shipping traffic to marine species. Individual noise exposure was predicted with associated uncertainty in an area with varying rates of co-occurrence. Across the UK, spatial overlap was highest within 50 km of the coast, close to seal haul outs. Areas identified with high risk of exposure included 11 Special Areas of Conservation (from a possible 25). Risk to harbour seal populations was highest, affecting half of all SACs associated with the species. For 20 of 28 animals in the acoustic exposure study, 95% CI for M-weighted cumulative Sound Exposure Levels had upper bounds above levels known to induce Temporary Threshold Shift. Predictions of broadband received sound pressure levels were underestimated on average by 0.7 dB re 1μPa (± 3.3). An analytical methodology was derived to allow ecological maps to be quantitatively compared. The Structural Similarity (SSIM) index was enhanced to incorporate uncertainty from underlying spatial models, and a software algorithm was developed to correct for internal edge effects so that loss of spatial information from the map comparison was limited. The application of the approach was demonstrated using a case study of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus, Linneaus 1758) in the Mediterranean Sea to identify areas where local-scale differences in space-use between groups and singleton whales occurred. SSIM is applicable to a broad range of spatial ecological data, providing a novel tool for map comparison.

[pt] GERENCIAMENTO DE EMISSÕES DE GASES DE EFEITO ESTUFA DO CAMPUS GÁVEA DA PUC-RIO: INVENTÁRIO DE EMISSÕES E PROPOSTA DE MITIGAÇÃO / [en] GREENHOUSE GASES EMISSIONS MANAGEMENT OF PUC-RIO, GÁVEA CAMPUS: INVENTORY OF EMISSIONS AND A PROPOSAL FOR MITIGATION03 November 2021 (has links)
emissões diretas e indiretas do Campus. / [en] Climate change has been considered by the scientific community as the most serious environmental problem ever faced by humanity. The studies performed, even with uncertainties, indicate a strong relationship between human actions, global warming and consequent climate change. Hotter summers, colder winters, severe droughts and floods, tornadoes, desertification, water and food scarcity and biodiversity loss are some examples of the impacts caused by this imbalance. The mitigation or
control of a problem with this magnitude deserves undoubtedly attention of governments and companies responsible for the large emissions of greenhouse gases, considered as responsible for the climate change.
However, other sectors can and should contribute to the achievement of the global targets set by international agreements. Regarding the uncertainties and expectations on climate change, in 1988 the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), consisted of scientists from around the world, was created to provide information related to the causes of climate change, its consequences and possible
actions to reduce the impact on the earth. IPCC reports are published regularly and become a reference for the formulation of public policies and for use by experts and students. The IPCC in its 4th Assessment Report, indicates a 70 percent increase in anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases in the period 1970-2004, where the carbon dioxide (CO2) is the largest contributor. For the same period, CO2 annual emissions increased 80 percent and represented 77 percent of total anthropogenic emissions in 2004. This increase is mainly due to the consumption of fossil fuels and changes in land use. Once established the relationship between greenhouse gases and global warming, it became evident the need for measurement and quantification of emissions for achieving any progress in the management of the problem. For that, a common, standardized, transparent and reliable methodology was desired. Developed in the United States by the World Resource Institute (WRI) in 2001, the GHG Protocol seeks to understand, quantify and manage GHG emissions of companies and nowadays is the most frequently method used worldwide for performing GHG inventories. It is also compatible with standard ISO 14064: 2007 - Greenhouse Gases and the methodologies for quantification issued by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Reading the Game: Exploring Narratives in Video Games as Literary TextsTurley, Andrew C. 12 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Video games are increasingly recognized as powerful tools for learning in classrooms. However, they are widely neglected in the field of English, particularly as objects worthy of literary study. This project argues the place of video games as objects of literary study and criticism, combining the theories of Espen Aarseth, Ian Bogost, Henry Jenkins, and James Paul Gee. The author of this study presents an approach to literary criticism of video games that he names “player-generated narratives.” Through player-generated narratives, players as readers of video games create loci for interpretative strategies that lead to both decoding and critical inspection of game narratives. This project includes a case-study of the video game Undertale taught in multiple college literature classrooms over the course of a year. Results of the study show that a video game introduced as a work of literature to a classroom increases participation, actives disengaged students, and connects literary concepts across media through multimodal learning. The project concludes with a chapter discussing applications of video games as texts in literature classrooms, including addressing the practical concerns of migrating video games into an educational setting.

[pt] A CONTRIBUIÇÃO DO BIODIESEL PARA A REDUÇÃO DAS EMISSÕES DE GASES DO EFEITO ESTUFA (GEE) DA MATRIZ ENERGÉTICA BRASILEIRA E PARA OS OBJETIVOS DE DESENVOLVIMENTO SUSTENTÁVEL (ODS) / [en] THE CONTRIBUTION OF BIODIESEL TO THE REDUCTION OF GREENHOUSE GAS (GHG) EMISSIONS FROM THE BRAZILIAN ENERGY MATRIX AND TO THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDGS)FERNANDO ABRITTA FIGUEIREDO 16 October 2023 (has links)
No aspecto
e renda no campo e o desenvolvimento regional. Desse modo, o PNPB contribui
[en] The dissertation analyzes the National Program for the Production and Use
of Biodiesel (PNPB), created in 2005, which introduced biodiesel into the
Brazilian energy matrix, a renewable and organic fuel that can be produced from
vegetable oils, animal fats and used cooking oil. The PNPB established the
gradual and partial addition of biodiesel to fossil diesel, whose content should
reach 15 percent in 2026. The PNPB was analyzed based on the three pillars of
sustainability, considering the economic, social and environmental aspects. In the
economy, despite the higher costs of biodiesel than diesel, the PNPB has
contributed to reducing diesel imports, improving the trade balance. On the
environmental side, biodiesel contributes to the decarbonization of the transport
sector by partly replacing diesel consumption. It also helps Brazil to meet its Paris
Agreement emission reduction objectives, since biodiesel emits about 70 percent less
GHG than fossil diesel. In terms of social contribution, even though it did not
fulfill its original objective to prioritize family farming in the North and
Northeast, the PNPB instituted tax breaks for biodiesel producers who purchase
raw materials from family farmers through the Social Biofuel Certificate,
fostering social inclusion, the generation of jobs and income in the countryside
and regional development. In this way, the PNPB contributes to the Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs), which include environmental, economic and social
goals, which must be met by 2030. The dissertation also analyzes whether there is
relevant land use competition between the production of biodiesel with land
reserved for environmental conservation or used in food production. Finally,
different future scenarios of production and use of biodiesel and biofuels in Brazil
are analyzed, in a context in which electric vehicles tend to be increasingly
widespread, but with lower intensity in the case of heavy vehicles (trucks and
buses) and in developing countries.

Pentecostal and postmodern hermeneutics: comparisons and contemporary impactNoel, Bradley Truman 30 November 2007 (has links)
The focus of this practical theological study is Pentecostalism, and the relationship between the hermeneutics of Pentecostalism and Postmodernism. Through a literary search, we observe the points of congruency between the hermeneutics of early Pentecostals and the key tenets of Postmodernism. We note the unprecedented acceptance of Pentecostal scholars into the larger theological world and question whether this is a result of the increased Modernization of Pentecostal hermeneutics. The Postmodern world of youth is explored, and we observe their tremendous openness to spirituality. This thesis will show that Pentecostals may contribute to the Christian world a Pentecostal hermeneutic that will speak a relevant message to generations of youth.
Chapters two and three examine the convergent viewpoints of Pentecostalism with Postmodernity, in terms of rationalism, narratives, and the place of experience in life and theology. Chapter four highlights the hermeneutical debate between Gordon D. Fee and his Pentecostal responders, noting the Modern approach in the principles debated. Chapter five seeks to provide interaction with a giant of theology seldom engaged by Pentecostals - Rudolf Bultmann - and his modern followers, and explores the world of Postmodern youth. Chapter six explores the work of Kenneth Archer, who has proposed a specific Pentecostal hermeneutical approach, and chapter seven discusses the role of the Holy Spirit in hermeneutics, including whether Pentecostal experience may be considered an ”edge” in hermeneutics. Chapter eight summarizes the findings of this study. / Practical Theology / D. Th (Practical Theology)
