Problematizing Service in the Nonprofit Sector: From Methodless Enthusiasm to Professionalization

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: Over the past forty years the nonprofit sector has experienced a steady rise in the professionalization of its employees and its operations. Some have argued that this trend is in large part a reaction to the requirements foisted upon the nonprofit sector through the passage of the Tax Reform Act of 1969. While some scholars have detailed a number of unintended consequences that have resulted from this trend toward professionalization, in general scholars and practitioners have accepted it as a necessary step along the path toward ensuring that service is administered in an accountable and responsible manner. I analyze the contemporary trend in professionalization of the nonprofit sector from a different angle--one which seeks to determine how the nonprofit sector came to problematize the nature of its service beginning in the early twentieth century, as well as the consequences of doing so, rather than reinforce the existing normative arguments. To this end, I employ an "analytics of government" from an ethical and political perspective which is informed by Michel Foucault's conception of genealogy, as well as his work on governing rationalities, in order to reveal the historical and political forces that contribute to the nonprofit sector's professionalization and that shape its current processes, institutions, and norms. I ultimately argue that these forces serve to reinforce a broad movement away from the charitable impulse that motivates individuals to engage in personal acts of compassion and toward a philanthropic enterprise by which knowledge is rationally applied toward reforming society rather than aiding individuals. This movement toward institutional philanthropy and away from individual charity supplants the needs of the individual with the needs of the organization. I then apply this analysis to propose an alternate governing model for the nonprofit sector--one that draws on Foucault's exploration of ancient writings on love, self-knowledge, and governance--in order to locate a space for the individual in nonprofit life. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Public Administration 2011

Super Bodies and Secret Skins: A Genealogy of Body Transformation

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: This dissertation examines the influential relationships between popular culture depictions of superheroes and the substantive, malleable, and real possibilities of human body transformation. Cultural discourses condition and constrain the ways in which identity and bodies are formed and expressed. This includes popular culture texts that, through their evocative narratives, provide guidance or solutions for dealing with real world problems. From the perspective of communication studies, this project involves examining ways people project and perform fantastic future versions of humanity in relation to popular culture artifacts, like superheroes, but also examines how such projections are borne out of and get expressed through our everyday, less than extraordinary experiences. Key theoretical tensions regarding identity and culture are elucidated. These tensions are then developed discursively into a genealogy of body transcendence that features the historicizing of social functions to determine from where such tensions and changes manifest, and how they ultimately affect us. Several key artifacts are introduced to help inform the investigation, including eight specific superhero body types that provide an ideal perspective through which transformative power can be observed. The superhero discourse is particularly relevant because it offers a utopian/dystopian tension regarding how the splendor and seduction of the discourse materializes in both liberating and problematic ways. Another aspect of this embodied approach involves adopting the alternate superhero persona of Ethnography Man. By undertaking my own identity transformations, I am better able to investigate spaces that encourage such identity slippage and play, such as the annual San Diego Comic Con International. The once strongly held perception that our bodies are fixed and stable is fast disappearing. In bridging the body with culture through a genealogy, it becomes much more apparent how body transformations will continue to manifest in the future. Therefore, from the experiences and analysis contained herein, implications regarding powerful discursive conditions and constraints that influence our ability to change take form in revealing, problematic, and sometimes unexpected ways. More specifically, implications of who has power, how it is exercised, and the effects of power will materialize and indicate whether or not everyday humans have the potential to become superheroes. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Communication Studies 2012

Multiperspective visualization of genealogy data

Georgelis, Anna January 2018 (has links)
This thesis presents and discusses the implementation of a web application developed as a Master’s degree project at Linköping University. The application is a tool offering a multiperspective visualization of genealogy data, that can be used by genealogists in order to analyze his or her collected family tree data, but also to find what data that may be wrong. Data stored in a GEDCom file is being processed and stored in a database. By using D3.js, the data is then visualized in three different types of representations: an ancestor tree, a sunburst chart and a lifeline representation, all interacting with each other. The work concludes that by using different types of visualizations to present the same data, it is possible to create a genealogy application where new kind of insights about the data can be gained.

Pedagogia : uma oração subordinada

Schineider, Suzana January 2015 (has links)
Based on studies that indicate a strong presence of subjects with psychological and sociological content in current curriculums of Pedagogy courses, this work uses Michel Foucault’s genealogical method to demonstrate, along Brazilian recent history, that historical conditions made it possible for the Pedagogy course to present such configuration. By analyzing relationships between Pedagogy and sociopolitical, socioeconomic events, and also its connections to discourses that founded modern science, it is possible to verify that the implementation of Pedagogy courses in Brazil in the 1930s aimed an education that would modernize the country, just as it was demanded by the model of capitalism recently established at the time. One of the strategies adopted was the transposition of theories which were regarded as innovative in Europe and in the United States; such theories were part of teachers’ education having as goal the constitution of modern subjects. Thus, the use of Social Sciences and Psychology was fundamental as regulation tools, that is, tools which would provide norms and suitability of schools to liberal principles. Having in view all the transformations in Brazilian society and the several curriculum changes that the Pedagogy course has been through since then, both the psychological and the sociological contents remained being the foundation of Pedagogy; Psychology, for that matter, in recent decades, has gained an increasingly relevant position in the curriculums of the course, having a hegemonic presence. Such hegemony effectively corresponds to and serves to neoliberal principles of the Brazilian State, whose educational policies have favored, since the late 1990s, the formation of “autonomous, self-disciplined and flexible subjects” who are needed by the politicaleconomic system. Despite the entirely savior-like pedagogical rhetoric, which reduces itself in proclaiming and denouncing the poor quality of education, this work highlights the fact that the Pedagogy course is also part of a logic that contributes to the failure of school and, therefore, also contributes to the maintenance of social disparities, even when guaranteed the universal access to school. Thus, the Pedagogy course that constitutes our teachers is much more – and not only – seen as an effect of the power of neoliberal educational policies, an attempt to adequate education to ultraliberal principles. Paradoxically, the course may also be seen, simultaneously, at the same time, as an agent intended to promote social development.

This research discusses the naturalization of the idea of a “child with a say” in contemporary critical-scientific discourses. This conception was constituted in these discourses so as to criticize the idea of modern childhood, related, among other things, to notions of immaturity and dependence on adults. The figure of subjectivity “child with a say” is used to justify an ensemble of varied practices – juridical (“child-witness”), political (“citizen child"), mediatic (“protagonist child”), educational (“competent child”) – which aims at investing on the child figure for which the constitution of a child as a subject of opinion and representation is determinant. The analysis of this discursive field – which comprises Sociology of Childhood, Anthropology of Childhood, Pedagogy of Childhood and Social Psychology – based on M. Foucault’s archaeo-genealogy, identified the kinds of statements present in this network, as well as the kind of discourse used. It was noticed that the functioning of these discourses depends on some presuppositions, which, in this research, are denominated mechanisms of critical discursivity. They are: the development of the concept representations of childhood and child, the constitution of the adult as an interdictor, the rediscovery of childhood, speech as a natural possibility and the idealization of the “childhood with a speech”. It was concluded that such presuppositions cooperate to produce the “childhood with a speech” as evidence, to which knowledge must devote itself and experience. Finally, an assemblage of investigation lines were elaborated and served as a base for the constitution of a genealogy of this subjectivity figure, typical of present times.

Medeiros, Igor Baptista de Oliveira January 2018 (has links)
This thesis presents itself in the form of an essay as an expression of a desire to problematize on the urgencies of the present and the recent past surrounding the study of organizations, producing effects that spread through the quotidian and creating a specific technology of government - the management dispositive. For this, the essay form is a useful way to deal with a form of knowledge production that seeks problematization rather than evidence. The essay is a political manifestation that brings to the fore by the writing process the reflective trajectory of the researcher and his positioning in the face of a problem. In this continuous process of reflexivity of the self in which theory and empiricism merge from the varied set of experiences of the essayist, knowledge is produced as a work of the self in thought that allows him to problematize on the questions around the sayings and doings of his field of study. In this thesis, the problem that is considered is the management dispositive and the discursive formations that were engendered by its positivity. Thus, I also use the writing of the self as a methodological practice creating a fictitious argument in which the positivity of management is also reverberated. Building upon the fiction narrative, I argue that our recent history has accompanied an advance in management techniques as a reference in the way of organizing life in society. Beyond the walls of firms, management tools are demanded from public administration to home care, setting up a rational-utilitarian mode of subjectivation supported by the standardization enunciation throughout the last century. It gained momentum when a new economic motto was enacted from the 1980s with the expansion of neoliberalism and the constitution of financial markets, reinforced by the enunciation of privileges. The recent aggravation of management positivity occurs in the form of another mode of subjectivation, which then acts alongside it in a concentric operation in favor of the maximization of Capital flows: the dispositive of financialization. Thus, subjects today are strongly subjugated to a logic that instils in them a supposed liberal individualization that masks a fund of disciplinary capitalistic totalitarianism. This thesis is a problematization of this contemporary moment of (dis)illusion engendering in the elaboration of a genealogy which, like a train that goes into a dark tunnel, will not see its end quite soon.

We problematize this research the process of setting up the Legal Psychology in the institutional context of the Justice System. From the genealogy of Michel Foucault, we investigate how to articulate the binomial complex Psychology-Law, Psychology, judiciary, producing an analysis of the emergence of this new area of expertise of the professionals of psychology, that handle the field of confrontation in subjectivity with the law the Courts and Justice, aware of the plans of the discursive practices and non-discursive practices. It conducted a literature review of work as well as documentary, collecting, reviewing and analyzing articles, theses, dissertations and relevant documents such as official legislation and compilations of their professional class organizations, to analyze the discourses on Legal Psychology. Secondly, we interviewed psychologists who work in Forensic Psychology area as well as those by the courts are enjoined to respond to their demand even working in different establishments which, in addition to the Courts of Justice, may be exerting its activities in socio-educational centers, Shelters, health units, social assistance centers and the role of independent experts. Thinking about the interview, we trigger propose topics for dialogue with our respondents about their institutional practices today and map out what their impasses and possibilities in this action. As a subject of knowledge-power professional psi is inserted into the judicial system and asked to respond to it through his theories, techniques, various practices and tools, which can also be considered body of political technologies, especially when they act on the body who should be its intervention target in response to the prerequisites of the law. The Forensic Psychology is constituted and produces its effects in the context of psychology as a discipline science, can be understood through Michel Foucault's studies of the emergence of disciplinary power and the type of society that this power builds: eminently judicializante society of social practices general. This research allowed us to find in the writings of Foucault, a short referential importance for the development involved analyzes of the psychologist care and, particularly, the legal psychologist, pointing to the need for theoretical reforms, technical, political and ethical, both the training of psychologists in general and as an expert active in the Judiciary.

Based on the terms (areté), (paidéia), humanitas and Bildung, the notion of human formation takes us back to the course of education history and philosophy in the Occident. Once the formation task consists in wholly form the human person outlining an êthos, a way of life, the setting of the speech order around formation shows up as an strategic point, while it allows the maintenance of certain forms os life and power relations in society. Beneath biopolitics aspect, a speech order takes place on many ways of life's management technologies, through the institutions focused on formation, be it through the discipline of individualized bodyes, be it through the population level control of the specie by means of normalization. Thereby, we question our present times: by retaking the senses fixed by the formative tradition in its relations with biopolitics governament, how can we place the limits and possibilities around formation speeches nowadays? Following the genealogic perspective, we intend to indicate some ways that may answer this question, through two tasks. On the one hand, to retake the historical plot wich based the formation notion around areté, paidéia e humanitas in ancient greco-roman world, e Buildung in modern german context. In the other hand, we try to indicate knowleadge and power relations that support these formative speeches. The notion developed by our research is described by teleoformity – the idea allows us to locate forms and aims that base and orientates the formative speeches, according to a horizon bounded by an image of way and of the ethos improvement. Thereby, our study was organized in two basal parts. In the first part, we present the speech guided by a supposed universal... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)
