Guertin-Tardif, Etienne 08 1900 (has links)
In this research I explore the pastoral activities offered at a women’s detention center in the province of Quebec. Based on participant observations conducted in the Catholic chapel of the establishment, I examine the interactions that are part of religious activities : gestures, words, and behaviors that take place before, during, and after the performances. Drawing on Erving Goffman’s dramaturgical approach I first reconstruct the various situations that compose the prison’s pastoral activities in order to describe what the actors say and do during these activities. By reconstructing religious activities, I discover the presence of “incidents”. What I call “incident” are words or gestures that keep manifesting themselves and slowing down the pace of the religious activities. Secondly, I try to understand and explain the recurrence of these « incidents ». This allowing me to reflect on 1) the “total” character of the institution in which they emerge, 2) the culture of participants by which they are incurred, and 3) the structure of religious activities in which they take shape. Through the portraying of situations, the analysis of interactions, and the description of their specificity, this research provides a better understanding of the religious activities as they are performed in prison without neglecting to look at its contents and manifestation in situ.

Kåge, Isabelle January 2010 (has links)
Title: Identity management on Facebook: a qualitative study in approaches to personal identity between two different age groups on the most public stage of our time (Identitetshantering på Facebook: En kvalitativ studie om förhållningssättet till den egna identiteten hos två olika åldersgrupper på vår tids mest offentliga scen). Number of pages: 43. Author: Isabelle Kåge. Tutor: Amelie Hössjer. Course: Media and Communication Studies C. Period: Fall Semester 2010. University: Division of Media and Communication, Department of Information Science, Uppsala University. Purpose/Aim: To identify differences in attitudes towards and management of personal identity onFacebook within two different age groups. Material/Method: Personal interviews, literature, electronic sources, Internet sources. Main results: Those in the younger age group present themselves differently depending on the person or persons with whom they are communicating. Those in the older age group however, present themselves in a more consequent matter based upon the visibility their actions have to all their friends on Facebook as a whole. The definitions of certain elements on Facebook, such as what constitutes private information or anexcess of photo-tags, differ between the two age groups. Comments and feedback differ in importance and effect between the two age groups. Those in the younger age group are more likely to modify their attitudes towards their identities based upon the functions of Facebook. Those in the older age group are more likely to modify their Facebook use based upon their attitudes towards their identities. Keywords: Facebook, identity, Goffman, Mead, generation, age groups, social media, social psychology.

Erving Goffman

10 May 2012 (has links) (PDF)

Malarde, Sandrine 06 1900 (has links)
This master’s thesis analyses the paths taken by individuals who exit ultraorthodox Jewish communities. More precisely, it illuminates the process by which certain Hasidim take it upon themselves to leave behind the lifestyle and the community in which they were born and raised. My research primarily uses interviews and field notes to show how certain individuals manage to exit such ultra-religious communities despite the presence of strong social controls to prevent leaving. This study examines adjustment strategies and ruses used by Hasidim to avoid religious control and prompt their departure process. Drawing from Goffman’s theory, I will show how in a controlled environment individuals are still able to succeed in creating some marges de manoeuvre. These particular spaces of liberty shaped by each individual allow for the ultimate success of completely leaving the community.

Senke, Jesper, Barkhem, Henrik January 2021 (has links)
During 2020 we have endured a long-lasting pandemic which has made an impact on daily life. The worklife could perhaps be the most affected area since a large portion of people have been forced to work from home. This could in turn lead to a troublesome relationship between the roles of private life and worklife, in other words an increase of work-life balance conflicts. This study aims to examine the consequences of telecommuting and the conditions required to achieve work-life balance. To conduct this study a qualitative method was used where ten parents of young children were interviewed. Earlier research performed on telecommuting has shown mixed results where various studies show either positive or negative outcomes. Our results show a mix of both positive and negative results depending on whether work-life balance is achieved or not. Different factors play a role in achieving work-life balance. Things such as personality, the stability of relationship and the characteristics of work play key roles in the outcome of telecommuting. The result shows that 2/10 did not achieve work-life balance, resulting in role conflict. However, 8/10 did achieve a balance between the roles where we argue for a symbiotic relationship. Most participants found telecommuting to be positive where participants value being able to spend more time with their families. Our results are in line with both the negative and positive findings of previous research. This contributes further to the uncertain results suggesting that more research is needed.

"...I have a purpose..."

Nilsson, Maja, Nordin, Amanda January 2022 (has links)
Based on celebrities’ mediated experiences of self-perceived mental illness in podcasts, this study aims to shed light on how celebrities talk about their mental illness on social media. This study is based on material from 10 interviews with celebrities and has been obtained from six different podcasts: Ångestpodden, Framgångspodden, Söndagsintervjun i P1, Helt ärligt med Sebastian Stakset, Värvet and Talk to me. The method used to analyse the material is a thematic analysis, which has resulted in two themes being identified: “Helping others” and “Withhold and distancing”. The first theme is about the celebrities wanting to help others in a similar situation by sharing their experiences of their mental illness. The second theme is about the celebrities in the way they express themselves to some extent withholding and in different ways distancing themselves from their mental illness. Together, these themes clarify a duality, despite the fact that celebrities express that they want to help others, there are tendencies to withhold and distance themselves from their ill health. The thematic analysis will then be analysed with concepts from Erving Goffman’s stigma theory. This study contributes to an increased awareness of the impact of the media in the representation of mental illness and can provide an increased understanding of how a stigmatized phenomenon is handled by the people who are exposed to it.

Antifascism: A Reason for Violence? : Antifascists Subjective Accounts on Their Endeavour and the Justification of Violence / Antifascism: Ett skäl till våld?

Jonsson Endl, Fabienne, Karlsson, Evelina January 2021 (has links)
Given the social importance of understanding violence and why it is applied, this study offers a thorough discussion on antifascists actions and perceptions in relation to violence. While previous research has examined antifascism, a substantial understanding of the concept and justification of violence through individual frames has fallen short. With the objective to contribute to the field of peace and conflict through theoretical approaches in the discipline of sociology, this study aims to contribute to decreasing this gap. With the help of Erving Goffman’s Framing Analysis, previous research, and thematic analysis, this study accounts for the individual perceptions and meanings ascribed to social situations and violence within anti-fascism. By conducting eight semi-structured interviews with individuals who identify themselves as active antifascists, this study has been able to demonstrate the importance of recognising the subjective understanding of violence as a means for an antifascist goal. Indeed, the antifascist perceptions are highly individual, where the mere notion that is agreed upon is that fascism has to be countered. While certain individuals justify violence for an antifascist purpose, it is framed as self-defence – but that violence is justified for the greater aim of antifascism, is not proved as a commonality.

: A quantitative and qualitative survey of posts on Instagram with #hälsa

Linn, Johansson, Julia, Lindberg January 2016 (has links)
The popular photo sharing app, Instagram, was founded six years ago and is now one of the largest and fastest growing social media-apps in Sweden. A few years ago a health trend blossomed on Instagram and almost everyone wants to share and show their healthy lifestyle today. Previous studies show that a lot of people feel stressed over this constant exposure to other peoples health-related topics. But what is health? What does it mean to be healthy? Who decides that? The purpose of this thesis is to explore Instagram messages (picture and text) with hashtag (#)hälsa (health) to see which topics that dominate and the norms that govern what these messages should look like to be accepted. The study builds on social constructionism and proceeds into the world of discourse analysis with Faircloughs critical discourse analysis as main focus. It is also supplemented with Foucault's theories of power and self-control, and Goffman's theory of the presentation of self. At first a quantitative content analysis where made so the material would be easier to handle and overview. Then a critical discourse analysis where made to gain a deeper knowledge and understanding of the material. The main results of the study concluded that there is no single definition of health, the definition depends on the context. Further the analysis revealed four dominant discourses with #hälsa: food, fitness, body change and well-being, and all these discourses produced different meanings of health. The study also discovered norms that influence the content with #hälsa on Instagram and shows how users, based on these norms, shape and create there identity. Finally the study revealed that it does not really matter if users are healthy, as long as they produce an image of them self of being healthy, they will be healthy in the eyes of others.

Project work, independence and critical thinking

Eklöf, Anders January 2014 (has links)
This thesis studies how students do projects in a Swedish upper secondaryschool. The students have to produce products and at the same time provethem self as independent in relation to the teachers, and negotiate therequirements of the project setting and the written instructions within thegroup. The study focuses on what comes out as problematic for the students, how they solve these dilemma situations and what resources are used in orderto do so.A choice was made only to analyse student group interaction in parts ofthe project process where the teachers were not physically present thus fillinga research gap.The empirical material was collected during three years in sex secondaryschool classes through filmed sessions of groups or pairs working with theirproject. Each of the four articles primarily focuses a special dilemma; structure, independence, instructions and critical thinking. By combining Goffman’sframe analysis with the concepts of risk and uncertainty from a Risk – societyperspective, issues related to what it means to do project work asindependent, critical 21st-century learner are illustrated and discussed. The choice to look only at situations in which students have to managewithout the aid of a physically present teacher illuminates several practicalconsequences like an unwillingness to go to the teacher and ask questions andan increased concentration on and interpretation of the written instructions. Adevelopment of Miller and Parlett’s (1974) discussion of student approach tocues are suggested. The concept of the cue choosing student are constructedin order to better respond to demands from an individualised interactionsociety. The study also emphasises how the students have to balance differentframeworks in order to be both authors and assessed students. Byimplementing a risk society perspective new ways of analysing andunderstanding independence and classroom interaction is suggested and arecontextualization of critical thinking proposed.
