Clima organizacional de discentes e servidores de pós-graduação de uma instituição pública de ensino superior / Organizational climate of servers and teachers post graduation of a public institution higher education

Moro, Angélica Balconi 28 August 2013 (has links)
Evaluating the organizational climate is a tool that provides knowledge about the work environment with information that managers may use strategically to make sense of scenario changes. This allows them to apply corrective measures, especially for improving quality and productivity gains, thus ensuring the success in the evaluation process from CAPES. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify related factors to organizational climate that influence the workplace of students and employees of the Post-Graduate Program (PPGs) of a Public Institution of Higher Learning. For this purpose, we carried out a climate research by means of a questionnaire based on models of Rizzatti (2002) and Luz (2003) and adapted to the reality of each program that it was intended to investigate. The results obtained, through the perception of the academic public, validated a set of components and respective indicators to investigate the organizational climate for learners and teachers of PPGs studied. On the basis of the analysis carried out, we conclude that the academic community notices the organizational climate factors that influence the work environment similarly in different dimensions. Students, teachers and technical-administrators evaluate the workplace in a very satisfactory way, mainly in relation to the activity which play in programs, resulting commitment, hard work, and dedication in carrying out tasks. This provides motivated behavior, especially between students and teachers, where the chances of placing on the market, growth opportunities, and the curriculum represent a stimulus in this process, which otherwise generates competition between colleagues, especially between different groups within the PPGs. On the other hand, the relationship between colleagues of the same workgroup shows a climate of integration, cooperation, and friendship. However, related factors include interpersonal relationships between different groups of work, working conditions, financial support for research and events, and the quantity of hours of class. Additionally, disciplines and work overload and topics pertaining to managers negatively interfere in the workplace, compromising the establishment of an organizational climate. In this way, the aim of this study has been reached, to the extent that it has contributed information and useful research tools for effectively managing process PPGs. With this information, the managers may detect the possible causes and consequences of occurring problems, and may apply corrective measures, especially in improving the quality and academic productivity, which will contribute to the success in the process of program evaluation from CAPES. Also, this will help the development of studies by improving the various processes that make up not only the study programs of IES, but also others who wish to avail themselves of this research instrument.

Farhat, Zouhour 11 1900 (has links)
Background: International nursing students face several challenges during their adaptation to university life. Their adaptation is influenced by several facilitating and hindering factors, and different strategies may be used to help with adaptation. This study aimed to describe the adaptation experiences of international graduate nursing students in French-speaking universities in Quebec. Methods: A qualitative descriptive approach was used. Eight international nursing students (male and female) enrolled in masters or doctoral studies participated in semi-structured interviews, and data were thematically analyzed. Results: Seven themes were identified: 1) before coming / upon arrival in Quebec; 2) the challenges encountered (language barriers, their absence from family, financial problems); 3) comparison with Quebec students and doubting their abilities; 4) factors influencing adaptation, coping strategies and adaptation over time; 5) the positive aspects of the adaptation experience; 6) influence of the global Covid-19 pandemic on adaptation; and 7) experiences with academic support services, referrals and advice. Conclusion: International graduate nursing students faced an accumulation of challenges that made their adaptive process more complex, especially for students from African countries. During the initial phase, a feeling of being lost and disoriented was expressed by most of the participants. The shock associated with the gap between participants' expectations and reality led to comparisons between themselves and the Quebec students, which caused them to doubt their ability to succeed. The Covid-19 pandemic was described as an additional challenge as well as a factor that hampered their adaptation. Several enabling factors were mentioned such as self-motivation / being proactive, having time to adapt, and having more direct support from the administration and professors/supervisors. The adaptation experience was not all negative, most participants also felt their experience was enriching. Overall, the results emphasize the importance of further raising the awareness of key stakeholders of the diverse contexts and needs of international graduate nursing students so that a more inclusive education approach may be adopted in French-speaking universities in Quebec.

Boubaker, Asma 06 1900 (has links)
With a growing number of international students worldwide, factors facilitating their integration and strategies for success need to be explored to meet the challenges faced by this population. Several previous studies have touched on this subject. However, despite the relevance of the results of these scientific writings, there remains a lack of consensus regarding solutions and strategies to facilitate the integration and success of international students. To contribute to this, this study aims to identify possible solutions and strategies to facilitate the integration and success of international students in higher education, including nursing. An integrative review based on Whittemore and Knafl's (2005) approach was designed, following five steps: 1) problem identification; 2) literature review; 3) data assessment; 4) data analysis; and 5) presentation of results. Twenty-two articles were selected. The analysis and interpretation of results were based on Schlossberg's 4 Systems theoretical framework. Four main groups of factors were identified. The first group refers to contextual factors and the resources available at the time of transition. The second group is associated with personal characteristics such as personality traits, including emotional intelligence, self-confidence, and language skills. The third group refers to different types of support, including family support, friends, and mentoring. The last group relates to coping strategies to ensure a better transition for international students, including the implementation of inclusive pedagogy and other strategies to reduce stress. Considering the results of this integrative review, recommendations for research, university policy and academic training were presented, highlighting the importance of creating inclusive and open learning opportunities, with the aim of mobilizing stakeholders to act on behalf of international students

Maïnich, Sarah 05 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this research is to develop a strong understanding of persistence in higher education among a specific international population: International Postgraduate Students. We do not know much about international students in Montréal thought we think they play a key role on the economic performance of host country and institution. Therefore this thesis presents the issues relating to reception, integration and training conditions among international postgraduate students at the Université de Montréal. We begin with the Canadian and Quebec contexts of internationalization of higher education to analyze the frame of their experiences in the host community. In parallel, we have identified a large number of theories on attrition and retention in postsecondary education (Tinto, 1993), giving us factors that explain success, persistence and dropout. However, we noted that Tinto’s one in particular is not sufficient to understand persistence among international students. Thus, we analyzed the academic and social experiences of these international students and the meaning they give to such experiences (Dubet, 1994, Rochex, 1995) and, finally, we wanted to explore the temps de l’affiliation (Coulon, 1997). Those purposes allowed me to finally identify and set the following research question: what aspects associated with student characteristics (Tinto), their social experiences (Dubet) and learning the métier d’étudiant (Coulon) may influence academic persistence among international students? Regarding the methodology, this exploratory research used a qualitative method (collecting and analyzing data). We conducted a descriptive data analysis in order to set a portrait of the international students in Montreal. We received institutional data from the Institutional Research Office of the Université de Montréal. We also wanted to discuss students’ sense making on their academic and social experiences. So, interviews were conducted with a limited number of volunteers (n = 8) giving a stronger analysis of their experiences and different understanding of persistence. Students voices heard in interviews suggest a strong resilience of the individual and the ethnic solidarity in spite of a lack of scholarships and other financial supports. Regarding their social and academic integration, though Canada is described as a welcoming society, they still have to deal and struggle with cultural boundaries, a lack of intercultural friendships so that they feel a general discomfort. Echoes of ethnographic interviews also suggest the influence of good quality interactions with their thesis supervisors. In a different matter, international students mention a strong relationship between their wellbeing and food. As a vehicle for maintaining or remembering their cultural identity in Canada, they struggle accepting a totally different food than the one from back home. Obviously, food, religion and language are important determinants of international students’ well being and general comfort in the new country. Research has made more audible the academic and social life of these students previously unknown in Quebec and Montreal. The exploratory and comprehensive approach showed that the decision to persist depends on the interrelation between the individual strategies and economic and social constraints. The thesis contributes to a better understanding of the experience of international students, including showing how perseverance is accompanied by fragility and they are important for universities seeking to enhance their position in the international higher education market.

Moraes, Fernanda Miranda de 27 August 2013 (has links)
With the development of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and especially since the 90s, when the era of the World Wide Web emerged, the way to access information has changed. We move from paper to electronic records and the information that was previously subject to its storage location is then accessed remotely, at any time of day. If, on the one hand, technological advances brought about significant changes, particularly with regard to the storage, and dissemination of knowledge, on the other, important issues emerged. Faced with this scenario is that, at least in recent years, the processes analyzed by Information Science (CI) were influenced by the advances of Information and Communication. In this sense, understanding how CI handles new technology emerges as a necessary task, especially because technological changes are occurring in ever faster in contemporary society. This present work is one such attempt of these understandings, having premised that from earlier analysis of these technological advances, it is possible to establish a time line with indications of changes, which directly reflected in the processes of storage and use of information. Accordingly, the objective of this research was to find out about the integration of ICT in Information Science. For this, there have been analyses of works presented at the National Research and Graduate Studies in Information Science (ENANCIB) from 1994 until 2012. From the set of 1913 communications presented in 13 editions of the event, there were selected 387 works by addressing issues related to technological advances. The communications were analyzed and classified according to the type of work approaches: Using tools or Reflective Analysis. Then the works were studied in relation to the theme, based on the descriptors of each type of communication. It was observed that the majority (82%) of the works present a critical reflection on ICTs and only 18% treat the use of tools. In relation to the theme, the works were classified into 25 descriptors of which the six most cited represent 80% of the reports. It was observed that to the prominent position of the descriptor Internet, representing 45% of the work, appearing then Information Technology and Communication (15%), Networking (6%), digital library (5%), Electronic Publications (5%) and Cyberspace (4%). The study elaborated an overview of advances in information and communication technologies and their impact in the scientific subject of information science, so it was possible to analyze the variables that influence the processes in the field, allowing reflections that can ensure the adequacy products and services to user needs in specific contexts.

In order to do so, we have analysed 163 papers contained in the ANPEd historical CD-ROM which gathers documents up to 2001 and from the 2002 and 2003 annual meeting CD-ROMs, selecting those that deal with higher education and approach aspects of graduate studies. Special attention was given to aspects that refer to the relationship between teaching and research in this level of teaching. We set off from a bibliographic review that situates graduate studies into higher education and universities and analyses teaching and research functions as inserted in the history of higher education in Brazil and in the expectations for the XXI century. For the data analyses we based on studies of Brazilian authors that produced syntheses of the academic production in theses, dissertations and national periodicals on higher education and teachers training. The texts that have been analyzed originate mainly from public universities; 30% refer to the relationship between teaching and research as inserted in analises of the history, financing, structure or organization of the Brazilian higher education; 38% of the texts approach in classroom investigations or documental and bibliographic research the courses, disciplines, curricular structure, pedagogical practices, teaching/learning processes or several concepts from teachers and students, among others. Although the production that focuses on graduate studies increases in this period, it tends to decrease in the last years, as opposed to the texts that approach the teachers training for higher education, which show an increase. We find a greater incidence of studies on teachers training courses and less on another graduate courses, as well as a recurrence of studies about courses as Pedagogy and Mathematics. The field of research about graduate students is little explored and investigations on quality and working conditions for professors, as well as substitute professors are practically ignored in the academic production / O objetivo dessa investigação, de tipo documental bibliográfica, foi construir um mapa dos principais aspectos abordados nos estudos sobre graduação com base nos textos apresentados nas reuniões da Associação Nacional de Pós-Graduação e Pesquisa em Educação (ANPEd), no período entre 1996 e 2003.

Using Site-Directed Mutagenesis to Determine Impact of Amino Acid Substitution on Substrate and Regiospecificity of Grapefruit Flavonol 3-O-Glucosyltransferase

Adepoju, Olusegun A., Shiva, Devaiah K., McIntosh, Cecelia A. 03 April 2014 (has links)
Flavonoids are secondary metabolites that are important in plant defense, protection and human health. Most naturally-occurring flavonoids are found in glucosylated form. Glucosyltransferases (GTs) are enzymes that catalyze the transfer of glucose from a high energy sugar donor to an acceptor molecule. A flavonol-specific 3-O-GT enzyme has been identified and cloned from leaf tissues of grapefruit. The enzyme shows rigid substrate specificity and regiospecificity. F3-O-GTs from grape (Vitis vinifera) and grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) were modeled against F7-O-GTs from Crocus sativus and Scrutellaria biacalensis, and several non-conservative amino acid differences were identified that may impact regioselectivity. This research is designed to test the hypothesis that specific amino acid residues impart the regiospecificity of the grapefruit enzyme. Site-directed mutagenesis was performed on three potentially key amino acid residues within the grapefruit F3-O-GT that were identified through homology modeling. Analyses of the enzyme activity of the mutant F3-O-GT proteins revealed that the single point mutations of serine 20 to leucine (S20L) and proline 297 to phenylalanine (P297F) rendered the recombinant enzyme inactive with flavonol substrates. Mutation of glycine 392 to glutamate (G392E) was active at 80% relative to the wild type. The mutant enzyme also did not show broadened acceptor specificity as it also favored flavonols as the preferred acceptor substrate. The glucosylation products of the active mutant enzyme will be analyzed to determine if this resulted in a change in regiospecificity.

Effects of Amino Acid Insertion on the Substrate and Regiospecificity of a Citrus paradisi Glucosyltransferase

Tolliver, Benjamin M., Shivakumar, Devaiah P., McIntosh, Cecelia A. 03 April 2014 (has links)
Glucosyltransferases, or GTs, are enzymes which perform glucosylation reactions. These glucosylation reactions involve attaching a UDP-activated glucose molecule to acceptor molecules specific to the enzyme. The products of these reactions are observed to have a myriad of effects on metabolic processes, including stabilization of structures, solubility modification, and regulation of compound bioavailability. The enzyme which our lab focuses its research on is a flavonol-specific 3-O-GT found in Citrus paradisi, or grapefruit. This enzyme is part of the class of enzymes known as flavonoid GTs, which are responsible for, among other things, the formation of compounds which can affect the taste of citrus. Our lab focuses its research on performing site-directed mutagenesis on Citrus paradisi 3-O-GT in an attempt to modify its substrate specificity and regiospecificity. In this poster, we report our findings thus far concerning the addition of specific residues to the 3-O-GT's amino acid sequence based on an alignment with the sequence of a putative flavonoid GT found in Citrus sinensis.
