O efeito do uso crônico de haloperidol associado à dieta com alto teor de lipídio na peroxidação lipídica no fígado de ratos wistar / The effect of long term haloperidol use associated to high fat diet on the lipid peroxidation in wistar rat liver

Silveira, Ilson Dias da 12 January 2007 (has links)
There is a growing number of evidences, associating the oxidative stress produced by the reactive species of oxygen, with the aging process at one hand, and with the beginning and development of the vascular complications of several chronic and degenerative diseases at another. The type of diet and the usage of specific medicines may be related among the responsible factors by the generation of free radicals. In Brazil, the consuming of higher amounts of fat on the diet has increased in the last years and haloperidol has been the most used neuroleptic in brazilian public health system due to its low cost when compared with other antipsychotic drugs. The objective of this study was to determine the lipid peroxidation through TBARS production in rats tissues, as an oxidative stress measure, promoted by the high fat diet associated with the chronic usage of haloperidol, the correlation between the abdominal fat content and the intracellular magnesium concentration as well as the correlation between the intracellular magnesium concentration and the hepatic production of TBARS. The high fat diet has promoted a significant increase on the TBARS levels in Wistar rat livers when compared to the control diet (one way ANOVA ), considering that the chronic usage of haloperidol has increased the hepatic production of TBARS promoted by high fat diet, raising twice the levels of TBARS when compared to control group ( two way ANOVA). The TBARS production promoted by the association of high fat diet with chronic usage of haloperidol seems to be related with the intra-erythrocyte concentration of magnesium, for there was a statistically positive correlation, between the content of intracellular magnesium and the TBARS production in rats livers . Supporting previous works that report a possible ionic base to the metabolic syndrome development, in this dissertation a negative correlation has occurred, statistically significant, between the intracellular magnesium concentration and the abdominal fat content among all the animals. The group fed by high fat diet as well as the group treated with haloperidol seems to be responsable, by diferent ways, for this result.

No. of bitstreams: 1 EmanuelleDVD_DISSERT.pdf: 1398010 bytes, checksum: 85e1d1f82b33da3e697eacbf6655c267 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-08-26 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior / Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been proposed as an alternative method for the treatment of biofilm-dependent oral diseases like dental caries. This therapy consists of simultaneous action of a visible light (L) and a photosensitizer (FS) in the presence of oxygen, which leads to production of different reactive oxygen species that can interact with the bacterial cell components, and promote cell death. This study aims to evaluate the antimicrobial action of PDT on oral bacteria in suspension, as well as the formation of mono and multi-species biofilms, in vitro, from a standard strain of Streptococcus mutans (ATCC 25175) and saliva samples, respectively. The dye methylene blue (MB) and toluidine blue (TB) were used at a concentration of 100 mg/ L and activated by halogen light (600 to 750 nm) from a modified hand held photopolymerizer (Ultralux ?, Dabi Atlante, Ribeir?o Preto , S?o Paulo, Brazil.). Planktonic cultures were prepared and submitted to different experimental conditions: 1. PDT using TB 2. PDT using MB, 3. L+ FS- , 4. TB + L - ; 5. MB+ L-; 6. L- FS- (negative control) and 7. administration of 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate (positive control) (Periogard ?, Colgate-Palmolive Company, New York, USA). The immediate and mediated action of PDT on bacterial suspensions, as well as its effect on biofilm formation were observed from the number of colony-forming units per milliliter (CFU/mL) and measures optical density (OD). The data were statistically analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney test for the significance level of 5%. According to the results, the PDT showed no antibacterial action on suspensions of S. mutans, regardless of the dye used. PDT with MB activated by halogen light was able to reduce 86.6% CFU/mL multi-species planktonic cultures, however, this reduction was not significant (p > 0.05). PDT showed antibacterial effect, mediate on multi-species planktonic cultures with TB (p < 0.001) and MB (p < 0.001), activated by halogen light. PDT was able to prevent the formation of multispecies biofilm, through the activation of TB by halogen light (p = 0.01). We conclude that activation of the dye toluidine blue and methylene blue, by halogen light (PDT) showed antimicrobial activity, compared to multi-species planktonic cultures prepared from saliva samples / A terapia fotodin?mica (TFD) tem sido proposta como um m?todo alternativo para o tratamento de doen?as orais biofilme-dependentes, como a c?rie dent?ria.

Exhibiting the East : An Analysis of Representations of Pacific Asia in Three Exhibitions in Stockholm

Cho, Yul January 2023 (has links)
This thesis is a study of representations of Pacific Asia in exhibitions in Stockholm. In the Swedish culture and art sphere, a public discussion surrounding Asia is conspicuously absent even though there are significant amounts of residents in Sweden with an Asian background. The thesis analyses three selected exhibitions: Korea Gallery at the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities, Dreamers’ Quay, Dreamers’ Key at Bonniers Konsthall, and From dying to living at Moderna Museet. The material consists of field observations, exhibition catalogs, handouts, wall texts, and interviews with the involved curators alongside with the exhibitions themselves. The thesis aims to initiate a critical discussion around the representations of the so-called “Other” and the implications of curatorial approaches in these exhibitions that primarily revolve around Asian themes with the help of the following research questions: 1) How is Asia portrayed and represented in each exhibition?; 2) What perception of Asia and Asianness is conveyed through the exhibitions as well as by the way of other related material?; and 3) How is the curatorial approach to the exhibitions with ethnographic themes revolving around Asianness? The qualitative case studies assess both the content and visuals of the exhibitions and the preparation processes of the exhibitions, and theoretically, they are informed by Stuart Hall’s theory of representation as well as Hal Foster’s and Miwon Kwon’s writings on the artist as ethnographer. Through an examination of the three case exhibitions, the thesis finds that representations of Asia are varied and have benefited from extensive curatorial efforts but show occasional weaknesses in terms of displaying the Other. The thesis contributes to a better understanding of representations of Asia in exhibitions in Sweden and hopefully paves the way for future research of this kind.

Trauma in the Syntax: Trauma Writing in David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest

Alyssa Caroline Fernandez (11181666) 26 July 2021 (has links)

This project presents a case study of postmodern trauma, working at the boundaries of the humanities and computer science to produce an in-depth examination of trauma writing in David Foster Wallace’s novel Infinite Jest. The goal of this project is to examine the intricacies of syntax and language in postmodern trauma writing through an iterative process I refer to as broken reading, which combines traditional humanities methodologies (close reading) and distant, computational methodologies (Natural Language Processing). Broken reading begins with close reading, then ventures into the distant reading processes of sentiment analysis and entity analysis, and then returns again to close reading when the data must be analyzed and the broken computational elements must be corrected. While examining the syntactical structure of traumatic and non-traumatic passages through this broken reading methodology, I found that Wallace represents trauma as gendered. The male characters in the novel, when recollecting past traumata or undergoing traumatic events, maintain their subject status, recognize those around them as subjects, and are able to engage actively with the world around them. On the other hand, the female characters in the novel are depicted as lacking the same capacities for subjectivity and action. Through computational text analysis, it becomes clear that Wallace writes female trauma in a way that reflects their lack of agency and subjectivity while he writes male trauma in a way that maintains their agency and subjectivity. Through close reading, I was able to discover qualitative differences in Wallace’s representations of trauma and form initial observations about syntactical and linguistic patterns; through distant reading, I was able to quantify the differences I uncovered through close reading by conducting part of speech tagging, entity analysis, semantic analysis, and sentiment analysis. Distant reading led me to discover elements of the text that I had not noticed previously, despite the occasional flaw in computation. The analyses I produced through this broken reading process grew richer because of failure—when I failed as an interpreter, and when computational analysis failed, these failures gave me further insight into the trauma writing within the novel. Ultimately, there are marked syntactical and linguistic differences between the way that Wallace represents male and female trauma, which points toward the larger question of whether other white male postmodern authors gender trauma in their writings, too. This study has generated a prototype model for the broken reading methodology, which can be used to further examine postmodern trauma writing.
