Edh, Fredrik, Karlsson, Marcus, Persson, Stefan January 2006 (has links)

: En diskursiv policystudie av jämställdhetsarbete i maskulina miljöer / Gender equality – for the sake of men, the working class and effectiveness? : A discursive policy study of gender equality reform efforts in masculine environments

Ekström, Linda January 2012 (has links)
Issues concerning gender equality are today an integral part of Swedish society. Because of this, even traditionally male-dominated actors are forced to incorporate a focus on gender equality. What kind of tensions may this provoke, and how are these tensions visible in the gender equality policy making of traditionally male-dominated organizations? Against this background, the aim of this dissertation is to analyse how issues of gender equality are “problematized” by three organizations that originate from masculine environments; Män för jämställdhet, IF Metall  and Rikpolisstyrelsen. I wish to analyse the meaning that these actors incorporate into the issue of gender equality and from which discourses these meanings are derived. This focus entails a specific theoretical standpoint. Thus, another aim of the study is to discuss the advantages of a post-structuralist approach to the study of public policy. More specifically, I want to develop the use of a range of discourse analytical modes of analysis and to evaluate their utility in capturing the dynamic of problematization processes. The empirical focus of the dissertation is on the years between 2000 and 2008. The research material consists of both formal and informal documents. The analysis shows that questions of gender equality can be problematized in a number of ways. Issues concerning gender equality can be tied to issues of men’s hegemony, men’s gender-specific problems, class-based problems and organizational problems. This wide array of problematizations also illustrates ways in which there still seems to be an underlying conflict over the meanings tied to the concept, even though nobody openly challenges the importance of gender equality reform efforts. I call this situation a “conflictual consensus” and point to the importance of deconstructing this supposed unity and illuminating the kind of power relations that lay hidden beneath it.

Towards subcellular localization of the human proteome using bioimaging

Stadler, Charlotte January 2012 (has links)
Since the publication of the complete sequence of the human genome in 2003 there has been great interest in exploring the functions of the proteins encoded by the genes. To reveal the function of each and every protein, investigation of protein localization at the subcellular level has become a central focus in this research area, since the localization and function of a protein is closely related. The objective of the studies presented in this doctoral thesis was to systematically explore the human proteome at the subcellular level using bioimaging and to develop techniques for validation of the results obtained. A common imaging technique for protein detection is immunofluorescence (IF), where antibodies are used to target proteins in fixated cells. A fixation protocol suitable for large-scale IF studies was developed and optimized to work for a broad set of proteins. As the technique relies on antibodies, validation of their specificity to the target protein is crucial. A platform based on siRNA gene silencing in combination with IF was set-up to evaluate antibody specificity by quantitative image analysis before and after suppression of its target protein. As a proof of concept, the platform was then used for validation of 75 antibodies, proving it to be applicable for validation of antibodies in a systematic manner. Because of the fixation, there is a common concern about how well IF data reflects the in vivo subcellular distribution of proteins. To address this, 500 proteins were tagged with green fluorescent protein (GFP) and used to compare protein localization results between IF to those achieved using GFP tagged proteins in live cells. It was concluded that protein localization data from fixated cells satisfactory represented the situation in vivo and together exhibit a powerful approach for confirming localizations of yet uncharacterized proteins. Finally, a global analysis based on IF data of approximately 20 % of the human proteome was performed, providing a first overview of the subcellular landscape in three different cell lines. It was found that the intracellular distribution of proteins is complex, with many proteins occurring in several organelles. The results also confirmed the close relationship between protein function and localization, which in a way further strengthens the accuracy of the IF approach for detection of proteins at the subcellular level. / <p>QC 20121017</p> / The Human Protein Atlas

Success on social media for businesses in vulnerable sectors

Pettersson, Marcus January 2014 (has links)
Social media is a relatively new phenomenon that has had a huge impact in the way we communicate in recent years. Today it is used daily by almost everyone and has become a billion dollar industry where corporate existence is increasing by every day. But there is not entirely safe to work with social media since customers and visitors can make comments and investigate what others are writing about the brand and form their own opinion. The purpose of this study is to explain the potential advantages and disadvantages for organizations in vulnerable industries with a focus on insurance companies who works with Facebook. The paper takes its starting point in the convergence culture that explains a cultural shift where consumers are encouraged to search for new information and combine content from different media. This is supplemented by a study by de Vries et al. (2012) who has analyzed what factors determines the popularity of a brandpost. In addition, brand-building theory, communication theory, relationship marketing and transparency is utilized to answer the essays questions and achieve the purpose of this study. The study was made with the help of a triangulation-method including interviews, qualitative analysis and a quantitative method. By performing a triangulation, the combination of these methods creates a greater understanding of the industry and more reliable data. The results of the study show that all insurance companies have a positive attitude to social media and understand the increasing transparency it brings by working with Facebook. In addition, the study shows that an integration of social media in the marketing mix should be prioritized so all elements are working to achieve the same objective. To create a successful posting in number of like-markings the study shows that it needs uniqueness, a unique date or event. In order to create more awareness for these unique posts, it should be published with a photo or video. Furthermore, the quantitative results shows that having a strong brand creates no obvious successes in social media, what mainly matters is the work being performed.

A Física Moderna e Contemporânea no Ensino Médio: Caminhos para a sala de aula / The modern and contemporary physics in high school : paths to the classroom

Ligia Valente de Sá Garcia 29 May 2009 (has links)
A significant problem for the introduction of Modern Physics contents in secondary schools physics is considered to be the appropriated selection of themes in curriculum design. To discuss this difficulty, we investigated how contents selections in this field have been accounted in recent physics text books and in local alternative propositions, in physics teaching research area. For analyzing these materials, we considered three major aspects: the introduction of the new ideas and conceptions of science of the twenty century, the concern of technological aspects that could contribute to the comprehension of contemporary world and the potential for discussion of social problems involving modern science impact in society. These three categories are also the major justifications for considering modern and contemporary physics in high school education. We also present two classroom propositions that we developed considering these same categories in selected themes, involving the E=mc2 equation and nuclear physics aspects. The results obtained in these analyze and interventions could contribute for the discussion, selection and future designs of high school curriculum.

From the "trap" of rhetoric to the critique of criticism : a study of Western thinking on rhetoric from Friedrich Nietzsche to Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault, Paul de Man et Roland Barthes.

Huang, Hai Rong 19 October 2009 (has links)
This thesis is a study of the contemporary Western critical approach to the problem of rhetoric pioneered by Nietzsche, in which rhetoric presents itself as a profound and radical questioning as well as a re-vision of the nature of language itself, and consequently of all aspects of social and cultural life. This study mainly addresses the rhetorical thinking of four critics — Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault, Paul de Man and Roland Barthes — who, in their common inheritance from and critique of Nietzsche’s own critical approach, have revealed a dual-nature of rhetoric which not only characterizes the mechanism of metaphysics, but also inevitably enmeshes all human thinking — including critical thinking — in a trap of deconstruction. This double-edged character of rhetoric sets a dual-task for critical thinking: an endless criticism [demystification] and self-criticism. Critical thinking thus turns out to be a “critique of criticism” as a reflection on the limit of critical thinking itself, that is, a critique — in the Kantian sense of the word — of the [im]possibility of rational thinking. Accordingly, this study focuses on two points: firstly, the dual-nature of rhetoric as expounded by each one of the critics from his specific intellectual perspective; secondly, the strategy for critical thinking proposed and employed by each of them.

Using the magic if to circumvent the problems for the actor working with green screen technology

Jacobs, Nicolaas Hendrik January 2013 (has links)
When portraying a character in a fictional world the actor is faced with many challenges. To circumvent these challenges, he must become congruent with the reality of the fictional world. In order to do so, the actor has to ‘believe’ in the circumstances of the unfolding scene and live ‘in the moment’. These external circumstances act as stimuli which the actor uses to create and consequently ‘believe’ in the environment that the character inhabits. However, the use of green screen technology in special effects limits or eliminates these stimuli and the external circumstances. Green screen is a technique used in film and television that allows the filmmaker to film an actor in combination with a green screen and then replace the ‘green’ with anything the filmmaker requires. This allows for compositing to occur and the filmed reality to be manipulated. However, this technology challenges the actor’s ‘belief’ and behaviour, thus affecting congruence with and the (photo)realism of the created fictional world. In a green screen environment the actor is challenged to imagine, experience and act in line with the circumstances of the fictional world that will replace the green screen, instead of the green environment in which he finds himself. One acting strategy that elicits imagination, action and feeling is Stanislavsky’s notion of the magic if. Accordingly, this dissertation proposes that this strategy can assist the actor in circumventing the challenges that arise when working with green screen technology. Stanislavsky developed his acting principles by observing human behaviour in an attempt to use the mind–body paradigm in circumnavigating the acting moment. The field of cognitive neuroscience has also investigated human behaviour and the mind–body paradigm and recent discoveries have increased understanding of the fields. These discoveries have validated the notion of the magic if and the components it incorporates. Yet, the discoveries surrounding the notion of the magic if and, subsequently, the increased understanding of the concept have not to date been applied to acting with green screen technology. It is therefore hypothesised that, by triangulating the challenges of ‘green screen acting’, the principles of the magic if and the knowledge gained from cognitive neuroscience, an acting strategy can be developed that will assist the actor in the green screen environment and thus create verisimilitude with the fictional world. This hypothesis has led to the theoretical development of explorations that will strengthen the skills the actor needs in order to apply the notion of the magic if; as well as an acting strategy to assist the actor when entering the green screen environment. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / gm2014 / Drama / Unrestricted
