The use of domination and legitimation in information systems implementationHussain, Zahid I., Cornelius, Nelarine January 2009 (has links)
No / In this paper, we present the results of a longitudinal case study on information systems (IS) implementation conducted in a community healthcare organization. Using structuration theory as a sensitizing framework, we highlight how the information technology (IT) Management improved their influence through gaining legitimation from other organizational stakeholders, and how the nature of this evolved over time. Our results highlight how an appropriate, sophisticated use of what Giddens refers to as the duality of structure contributed to the consolidation of the IT Manager's credibility and authority. We also report on how the IT Management had most of their actions legitimated as an integral element of their actions. The results also highlight the distributed nature of power, such that even those at the lower end of organizational hierarchy were able to influence the success or failure of IS implementation.

Visualising a knowledge mapping of information systems investment evaluationIrani, Zahir, Sharif, Amir M., Kamal, M.M., Love, P.E.D. 2013 July 1917 (has links)
Yes / Information systems (IS) facilitate organisations to increase responsiveness and reduce the costs of their
supply chain. This paper seeks to make a contribution through exploring and visualising knowledge mapping
from the perspective of IS investment evaluation. The evaluation of IS is regarded as a challenging
and complex process, which becomes even more difficult with the increased complexity of IS. The intricacy
of IS evaluation, however, is due to numerous interrelated factors (e.g. costs, benefits and risks) that
have human or organisational dimensions. With this in mind, there appears to be an increasing need to
assess investment decision-making processes, to better understand the often far-reaching implications
associated with technology adoption and interrelated knowledge components (KC). Through the identification
and extrapolation of key learning issues from the literature and empirical findings, organisations
can better improve their business processes and thereby their effectiveness and efficiency, while preventing
others from making costly oversights that may not necessarily be only financial. In seeking to
enlighten the often obscure evaluation of IS investments, this paper attempts to inductively emphasise
the dissemination of knowledge and learning through the application of a fuzzy Expert System (ES) based
knowledge mapping technique (i.e. Fuzzy Cognitive Map [FCM]). The rationale for exploring knowledge
and IS investment evaluation is that a knowledge map will materialise for others to exploit during their
specific technology evaluation. This is realised through conceptualising the explicit and tacit investment
drivers. Among the several findings drawn from this research, the key resulting knowledge mapping
through FCM demonstrated the complex, multifaceted and emergent behaviour of causal relationships
within the knowledge area. The principal relationships and knowledge within IS investment evaluation
are illustrated as being determined by a blend of managerial and user perspectives.

TEA-IS: A hybrid DEA-TOPSIS approach for assessing performance and synergy in Chinese health careAntunes, J.J.M., Hadi-Vencheh, A., Jamshidi, A., Tan, Yong, Wanke, P.F. 24 March 2023 (has links)
Yes / This paper presents an assessment of the Chinese healthcare system in 31 provinces for a 10-year period in light of relevant physical and human resource variables. First, a novel TEA-IS (Trigonometric Envelopment Analysis for Ideal Solutions) model is developed to assess healthcare efficiency at the province level. Machine learning methods are also employed to predict high-low performance and the synergistic Chinese healthcare province in terms of contextual variables. The results indicate that synergy has played a pivotal role in the Chinese healthcare systems, not only by triggering higher performance levels due to the progressive adoption of best practices over the course of time, but also by being closely related to different socioeconomic and demographic variables, such as the illiteracy rate. It is possible to claim that healthcare performance has remained stable in China over the past two decades, performance and synergy at the province level are still heterogeneous.

Enshittification av sociala medier : En studie i digitala fotbojor / Enshittification of social media : A study in the shackles of the digital ageJohansson, Carl-Johan, Kovacevic Gahne, Franco January 2024 (has links)
A majority of the world’s population today resides on social media. At the same time a small group of platforms dominate the social media landscape. While these services have experienced great growth both in terms of registered users and market dominance, they’ve also been heavily criticized for the way the user experience seems to have deteriorated over time, particularly in respect to how disinformation is spreading throughout the networks and the way these services monetize their users’ personal data. Enshittification is a phenomenon, coined by the tech journalist and -critic Cory Doctorow, that describes the way these platforms actively work to make the user experience worse. The phenomenon asserts that people will keep using services that exploit them due to high switching costs—of either personal or economic nature, or both—even though the user experience deteriorates. This study offers a grounding theory of enshittification as a phenomenon, along with a critical perspective of its manifestation in social networks. Its purpose is to create a definition of the phenomenon and to establish a dialogue within the research field of information systems. The study also offers greater insight into the underpinnings of enshittification and its consequences for the end users, along with a critical reflection over possible mitigation strategies. It also argues that critical theory is needed in the field of IS research in order to be able to analyze phenomenons like enshittification and similar social aspects that manifest themselves within information technology.
