Språkdeprivation - en litteraturstudie om språkets betydelse för döva och hörselskadade

Axelsson, Ann, Brakstad, Elisabeth January 2012 (has links)
Importance of language in human development is important for the individuals. The language allows us to good cognitive performance, and guides us to our identity and personality. Through language we express who we are and what we want. But what if the language doesn’t become a matter of course and if we do not have access to it? This study deals with the role of language to deaf, hearing impaired and people with cochlear implants and what happens if they do not have access to the language they need.

Appearance-driven Material Design

Colbert, Mark 01 January 2008 (has links)
In the computer graphics production environment, artists often must tweak specific lighting and material parameters to match a mind's eye vision of the appearance of a 3D scene. However, the interaction between a material and a lighting environment is often too complex to cognitively predict without visualization. Therefore, artists operate in a design cycle, where they tweak the parameters, wait for a visualization, and repeat, seeking to obtain a desired look. We propose the use of appearance-driven material design. Here, artists directly design the appearance of reflected light for a specific view, surface point, and time. In this thesis, we discuss several methods for appearance-driven design with homogeneous materials, spatially-varying materials, and appearance-matching materials, where each uses a unique modeling and optimization paradigm. Moreover, we present a novel treatment of the illumination integral using sampling theory that can utilize the computational power of the graphics processing unit (GPU) to provide real-time visualization of the appearance of various materials illuminated by complex environment lighting. As a system, the modeling, optimization and rendering steps all operate on arbitrary geometry and in detailed lighting environments, while still providing instant feedback to the designer. Thus, our approach allows materials to play an active role in the process of set design and story-telling, a capability that was, until now, difficult to achieve due to the unavailability of interactive tools appropriate for artists.

Character Education: Examining The Perceptions Of Elementary, Middle, And High School Teachers In A Central Florida School District

Ampel, Jason 01 January 2009 (has links)
While schools are academic institutions to prepare our country's youth for their future, developing a child's character and civic responsibilities is necessary and is often deleted from the explicit curriculum set forth in most school districts throughout the country. This study investigated the perception of character education of teachers in a Central Florida school district, as it related to teacher importance, teacher efficacy, and teacher practice of character education. This study investigated the responses of 497 classroom teachers surveyed within one Central Florida school district. The questionnaire used in this study was designed to illuminate teacher perceptions of character education, by examining a teacher's level of importance, efficacy, and practice of character education in their classrooms and schools. The three areas of importance, efficacy, and practice were examined to determine whether there was a statistically significant difference among Central Florida educators based upon demographic variables of a) grades level taught, b) years of experience, c) highest degree attained, d) gender, and e) National Board Certification. The results of this survey, in combination with existing research findings, proved to be beneficial in revealing the ideals and explicit actions that need to be prevalent in public schools today to insure a balance between academics and the development of civic behaviors and positive character values. This study was a step in a effort to depict the voices of all teachers as stakeholders in one Central Florida School district.

An Investigation Into Hotel Employees' Perception Of Green Practices

Kim, Sun-Hwa 01 January 2009 (has links)
This study examined how employees of the hotel industry perceived green practices. Data was collected from 220 employees working in eight green certified hotels in Orlando. Research results revealed that performance levels of green practices implemented by hotels were lower than the importance levels of those same green practices as perceived by hotel employees. The results of the study illustrated that (1) the employees' perception regarding green practices was not different than one of hoteliers in terms of importance and performance, and (2) employees weighted the green practices that were beneficial to them as more important than green practices that required their behavior change. Also, a positive correlation between organizational commitment and green practices detected in this study which suggests that hotel organizations may anticipate positive ramifications of green practices in relation to HR approach when they embrace green practices. Unfortunately, employees' green perceptions at work were not generalized by their demographic characteristics, yet a number of considerable results were garnered from this study. These were (1) employees in operational departments were more green conscious than employees in other departments, (2) generation X was critical about green performance by the hotels, and (3) minorities showed more green concerns than other ethnicities. This study suggests that hotels need to spend more time and effort in communicating their green practice to employees. Training to improve green practices should be versatile and job-specific with strategies developed to motivate the employees to engage in green practices. Overall, this study proposes for hotels simply deploying green practices is not enough. They should carefully plan their green practices by training and motivating employees.

Kommunikationens betydelse i operationssalen utifrån operationssjuksköterskans perspektiv / The importance of communication in the operating room from the operating nurse's perspective

Lysell, Linda, Alfredsson, Ellinor January 2023 (has links)
The operating room nurse works in a high-tech and complex environment, where collaboration takes place multi-professionally. In order to maintain good and safe care for the patient, good communication is needed. The operating room nurse has a responsibility to create a good atmosphere in the operating room and cooperate with the team to provide an ethical approach to the patient. Research shows if communication is lacking in the operating room, there is an increased risk of care being compromised. The purpose was to highlight the communication in the operation team in the operating theatre from the operating room nurse's perspective. A systematic literature review with a qualitative design was conducted. The search was conducted in the Cinahl and PubMed databases. Thirteen scientific articles were analysed according to Bettany-Saltikov and McSherry's (2016) analysis model. The result is presented in three main categories and are important for communication. being affected by the work environment in the operating room, the team relations are affected in the operating room and importance for safe care. A good knowledge and understanding of how respectful versus disrespectful behaviour affects the communication is important to promote a good atmosphere in the operating theatre. This leads to good cooperation in the operation team and strengthens patient safety.

Quality of Life Domains in Breast Cancer Survivors: The Relationship Between Importance and Satisfaction Ratings

Hinz, Andreas, Zenger, Markus, Schmalbach, Bjarne, Brähler, Elmar, Hofmeister, Dirk, Petrowski, Katja 26 October 2023 (has links)
Objectives: Quality of life (QoL) has been the focus of increasing interest in oncology. QoL assessment instruments implicitly assume that each QoL domain has the same meaning for each patient. The objective of this study was to analyze the importance of and the satisfaction with QoL domains and to analyze the relationship between the two. Methods: A sample of 308 breast cancer survivors was examined twice with a three-month time interval. The women completed the two QoL questionnaires Questions of Life Satisfaction (FLZ-M), which measures participants’ satisfaction with eight QoL domains and the subjective importance of those domains to them, and the EORTC QLQ-C30. A sample of 1,143 women from the general population served as controls. Results: Compared with the general population sample, the patients were less satisfied with their health andmore satisfied with all other QoL domains. The subjective importance of health was lower in the patients’ sample (Effect size: d = 0.38). Satisfaction with health and importance of health were slightly positively correlated (r between 0.05 and 0.08). The effect of QoL domain importance on general QoL was small (beta between −0.05 and 0.11), and interaction effects between domain importance and satisfaction on the prediction of global QoL were negligible. Conclusion: In addition to satisfaction with QoL dimensions, the subjective importance of these dimensions is relevant for psychooncological research and treatment. Health is not the only relevant QoL domain in breast cancer survivors, other domains such as finances also deserve health care providers’ attention.

Risk identification and project approval: an importance-performance analysis of taxonomy-based risks in Information Technology projects

Da Silva, Tiago Ferreira 01 December 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The dissemination of project management practices is consolidating project as a great mean of achieving an organization's strategic plan (PMI, 2008, p. 10). But there are no resources and funds available to all, and competition among alternative projects is increasing. Funding institutions, government agencies, and credit rating organizations started considering project risk in project evaluation, instead of only using financial metrics such as ROI (Return on Investment) or NPV (Net Present Value). In order to obtain resources needed to implement projects, and thus contribute to an organization's objectives, it is necessary to identify the risks that have greater influence on project approval. This study applied the Importance-Performance Analysis (Martilla & James, 1977) to identify the main risk identification deficiencies for Information Technology (IT) project managers who apply for resources or funding approval. The identification was made possible by measuring IT project managers' perceptions of (1) the level of importance, or positive influence, which different risk categories have in project approval; (2) the level of performance they believe to have in the identification of these risks, meaning prior detection and registering; and (3) the gap between the measured levels of importance and performance. A survey listing 28 risk categories belonging to a validated risk taxonomy and 5-point Likert scales with different levels of importance and performance were presented to IT project managers from the central Illinois area. A total of 38 professionals answered the survey instrument, and verification of exclusion criteria resulted in an adjusted sample of 32 subjects. Descriptive statistics were used to compare mean values for each category, determining the gap between importance and performance levels for every category. The risk categories that presented the top three scores for importance were Scope uncertainty, Legal/regulatory, and Financial. The risk categories that represented the three greatest deficiencies or gaps (importance versus performance) for IT project approval were Contractual, Complexity, and Scope uncertainty.
