Estruturas de gestão de informações para inteligência de negócio nas organizações e o impacto individual nas atividades / Management structures of information for business intelligence in organizations and the individual impact on activities

Os sistemas de informação para inteligência de negócio (conhecidos também como BI - Business Intelligence) têm o propósito de coletar, estruturar, preparar e disponibilizar informações referentes aos processos internos e ao ambiente externo das organizações. O uso dessas informações visa suportar o processo de tomada de decisão bem como administração e inovação dos próprios processos de negócio das organizações. Dessa forma, essa classe de sistemas de informações (BI) tem o potencial de melhorar o desempenho individual e organizacional, sendo uma fonte de vantagem competitiva para as organizações. A abordagem de sistemas para BI não pode ser considerada somente como uma sequência de projetos isolados para disponibilização de informações. A gestão das demandas de informações necessárias para o negócio requer um esforço permanente para manter a função de BI alinhada com as necessidades da organização, através de processos que garantam a disponibilidade, o uso de informações e análises compartilhadas com base nos mesmos conceitos, documentação e organização das informações, assim como o suporte e treinamento técnico e funcional nos sistemas existentes. Nesse contexto, surgiu a proposta dos centros de competências de informações para BI, como uma estrutura de suporte para todas as áreas de negócio, sendo o elemento de ligação entre a área de tecnologia da informação e as diversas áreas da empresa para a gestão corporativa das informações. Este trabalho se propôs a operacionalizar uma forma de classificar as estruturas de gestão de informações para BI que são encontradas nas organizações, verificando o efeito de cada tipo de estrutura na qualidade percebida das informações disponibilizadas para as áreas de negócio, bem como o impacto para atividades dos indivíduos nas organizações que utilizam sistemas de BI. Foi realizada uma pesquisa quantitativa em três organizações, cada uma compondo uma amostra de cada tipo de estrutura de gestão de informações. Com a aplicação da técnica estatística de PLS, foi possível obter os efeitos entre as variáveis QI (Qualidade da informação), QGI (Qualidade da Gestão da Informação) e II (Impacto individual), moderados pelo tipo de estrutura de gestão de informações. Apesar de terem sido obtidas diferenças estatisticamente significantes entre as amostras, isto é, que as influências de QGI e QI em II variam estatisticamente de acordo com o tipo de estrutura de gestão de informações, foram pequenas as diferenças absolutas dos efeitos entre as estruturas adotadas em cada organização. Porém, os resultados obtidos nesta pesquisa de caráter exploratório sugerem a necessidade de estudos em uma maior quantidade de organizações, com vários casos para cada tipo de estrutura, a fim de identificar se existe consistência do efeito da variável moderadora nas variáveis analisadas entre diferentes tipos de organizações. / Information systems for business intelligence are designed to collect, organize, prepare and make available information related to internal processes and external environment of organizations. The use of this information is intended to support the process of decision making, business management and innovation of the processes of organizations. Thus, this class of information systems (BI) has the potential to improve individual and organizational performance, being a source of competitive advantage for organizations. The approach to deploy and sustain this class of information of system (BI) cannot be only a sequence of individual projects to make available information required during the scope phase of the project. Demand and delivery management of information necessary for the business requires an ongoing effort to maintain the function of BI aligned with the needs of the organization, through processes that ensure the information availability, use of shared information, information analysis across the organization based on the same concepts, documentation and organization of information, as well as support and training in technical and functional aspects of the systems. In this context, it has emerged the competence centers of information for BI, as a support organization for all areas of business, being the liaison between the area of information technology and the various areas of the company for corporate management of Information. This study proposes to operationalize a framework to classify the structures of information management for BI that are normally found in organizations and check the effect of each type of structure in the perceived quality of the information provided to the business areas as well the impact on individual activities for organizations that use BI systems. It was performed a quantitative study in three organizations, each one composing a sample of each type of management structure information. With the application of the statistical technique of PLS, it was possible to obtain the effects between variables QI (Quality of Information), QGI (Quality of Information Management) and II (Individual impact), moderated by the variable called \"type of information management structure\". Despite having been obtained statistically significant differences between the samples, in other words, that the influence of QGI and QI on II statistically vary according to the type of information management structure, the absolute differences of the effects were small between the respective structures adopted in each organization. However, the results obtained in this exploratory study suggest the need to research a larger number of organizations with multiple cases for each type of structure, in order to identify whether there is consistency in the effect of the moderating variable on the other variables among different types of organizations.

Para alcançar esse objetivo, além de uma ampla revisão da literatura, serão analisados os métodos/metodologias e técnicas de identificação de bens de informação e modelagem de fluxos informacionais à luz do Ciclo de Vida da Informação adotados no projeto MGIC – Modelo de Gestão da Informação e do Conhecimento e, ainda, observados os resultados desse projeto sob o enfoque da gestão da informação. A revisão da literatura permitiu considerar que a informação tem se tornado um dos mais importantes recursos para as organizações e, nesse sentido, o fluxo informacional ou o ciclo de vida dessa informação no contexto organizacional precisa ser gerenciado. Em adição, a análise dos resultados do projeto MGIC permitiu contrapor os aspectos percebidos na organização onde este foi executado com o que preconiza a literatura que trata do tema em estudo, principalmente no que tange a definição e classificação de bens de informação. A conclusão do trabalho indica métodos mais precisos de identificação e classificação dos bens de informação bem como uma proposta de modelagem de fluxo de informação que assegura um ciclo de vida da informação mais eficaz para o contexto das organizações baseadas em informação. / This work aims to contribute to improving the decision-making process of information-based organizations analyzing the life cycle of information as a tool for strategic information management, and propose a method to identify and classify information assets in organizational context, considering the specificities of each level of the organization. To achieve this goal, beyond the comprehensive literature review, it will analyze the methods / methodologies and techniques for identifying information assets and modeling of information flows in the light of the Information Lifecycle adopted in MGIC project - Information Management Model and knowledge and also, above all, the observed results of this project with a focus on information management. The literature review allowed us to consider that information has become one of the most important resources for organizations and, accordingly, the information flow or the life cycle of this information in the organizational context needs to be managed. In addition, the analysis of the results of MGIC project will oppose aspects perceived in the organization where it was implemented with which advocates the literature on the subject being studied, especially regarding the definition and classification of information assets. The conclusion of the study will indicate methods more accurate of the identification and classification of information assets as well as a proposal for information flow modeling methodology to ensure a life cycle of more effective information to the context of organizations based information.

"Informatização de atividades administrativo-burocráticas de enfermagem relacionadas ao gerenciamento da assistência" / Computerization of nursing administrative and bureaucratic activities related to assistance management.

Trata-se de uma pesquisa descritiva cujo propósito é o de observar, descrever e explorar aspectos de uma situação, utiliza-se de uma abordagem qualitativa. Investiga o uso do computador no desenvolvimento de atividades administrativo-burocráticas de enfermagem relacionados com o gerenciamento da assistência. Procurou-se também desvelar estratégias de implantação de sistemas informatizados nos processos de trabalho do enfermeiro. O recurso metodológico usado foi a análise de conteúdo, na modalidade de análise temática de BARDIN. Os resultados são analisados e discutidos em 05 categorias e respectivos núcleos de significados. Constatamos que o ensino da informática, em tempos de informação e mudanças aceleradas na aquisição de novos conhecimentos, não pode ser conseguido sem o uso de computadores na ciência da enfermagem e, em assim sendo o curso de enfermagem deve incluir no seu currículo o computador e o gerenciamento de informações. Os estudantes de enfermagem devem buscar o conhecimento no uso da tecnologia informacional e entenderem como ela faz interface com os vários sistemas de saúde. O desenvolvimento de atitudes tidas como positivas em relação a aplicação do computador na enfermagem, ainda na formação do futuro enfermeiro é essencial para que venha a envolver-se no planejamento e implantação de projetos informatizados. Já na prática o que se constatou foi um déficit significativo teórico e prático no manuseio do computador nos processos de trabalho. A Central de Processamento de Dados não ofereceu treinamento e informação suficiente para o “staff” de enfermagem. Percebeu-se ainda durante a fase de coleta de dados e no discurso dos entrevistados a despreocupação, da instituição em manter os enfermeiros bem treinados no manuseio da informática. Pode-se mesmo afirmar que o pouco da habilidade aprendido deu-se após inúmeras tentativas de acertos e erros. No entanto, o que mais chamou a atenção foi a grande preocupação dos enfermeiros em manifestar o interesse em buscar a informação, conhecimentos e cursos de especialização, manter-se atualizado. Eles estão ansiosos em encontrar meios para continuar a estudar. Constatou-se que o uso de grandes bancos de dados computadorizados para armazenar e administrar informações é um importante aliado na tomada de decisões no cuidado ao paciente. O uso do computador torna o trabalho do enfermeiro mais evidente, pois ao refletir seu trabalho, justifica largamente sua existência e seus custos operacionais. Muitas oportunidades que os enfermeiros têm para desenvolverem estratégias pessoais na sua prática podem viabilizar a introdução de sistemas informáticos nos processos de trabalho. A conclusão mais importante na análise dessas estratégias é que a formação de pelo menos um reduzido grupo de enfermeiros especializados em sistemas de informação computadorizados para fins de enfermagem seria uma estratégia admirável. Quanto as tendências profissionais na enfermagem moderna espera-se que os enfermeiros tenham uma ação mais destacada no desenvolvimento, seleção e implementação de Sistemas de Informação Hospitalar Computadorizado. Finalmente com relação a (in) satisfação do enfermeiro no trabalho verificou-se que a maioria das razões apontadas pelos enfermeiros como fatores de insatisfação podem ser evitada ou em muito amenizada com a informatização. O desgaste físico e psicológico decorrente com a demanda de tempo em atividades tidas como repetitivas e burocráticas em sua maioria podem ser substituídas na íntegra com programas de computadores que podem ser operados por um escriturário bem treinado. A sobrecarga de trabalho seria então bastante aliviada ou mesmo deixar de sê-lo, dando a oportunidade ao profissional de enfermagem de estar mais próximo dos seus pacientes. / It is a descriptive research aiming to observe, to describe and to explore aspects of a situation, using a qualitative approach to investigate the use of computer in the development of nursing administrative and bureaucratic activities related to assistance. It was tried to search for strategies of computerized systems in the nursing work processes. The used methodological resource was the content analyses in the modality of thematic analyses of Bardin. The results were analyzed and discussed in five (05) categories and respective nuclei of meanings. It was verified that the teaching of computer science in times of information and accelerated changes in the acquisition of new knowledge can not be done without the application of computer in the nursing science, so the nursing course must include in its curriculum the computer science and its use in the administration of information. The nursing student should become sophisticated with the use of information technology and to understand how it interfaces with the various health systems. The development of positive attitudes concerned with the application of computer in the nursing activities during the under graduation course is essential to make the future professional involved in the planning and implantation of computerized projects. It was verified that in the professional field there were a significant theoretical and practical deficit in handling computers in the nursing work processes. One should ask: why is that so? The simple answer is that the Data Processing Center did not give sufficient training and information to the nursing staff. It was still noticed during the phase of data collecting and interviewees´ speech the easiness of the Institution in maintaining the nurse staff well trained in handling computers. One can affirm that the little knowledge was learned after countless attempts of successes and mistakes. However, what most got attention was the great concern of the nurses in manifesting the interest in looking for information, knowledge and specialization courses to stay up dated. They are eager to find means to continue studying. It was verified that the use of large computerized data bases to store and administer information is an important ally to reach a decision in the care of patients. The use of computers make the nursing job more evident, because when considering carefully the job, justifies largely its existence as well as the operational costs. A lot of opportunities that nurses have to develop personal strategies in practical activities can make possible the introduction of computerized systems in the work process. The most important conclusion in the analysis of those strategies is that the formation of a reduced number of nurses specialized in computerized information systems for nurses issues would be an admirable strategy. Concerning professional tendencies in the modern nursing it is wanted that nurse have a more outstanding participation in the development, selection and implementation of hospital computerization information systems. Finally it was considered the nursing satisfaction or dissatisfaction in the work. It was verified that the most of pointed out reasons for dissatisfactions can be avoided or softened with the computerization. The physical or psychological waste related to time consuming demands in activities considered repetitive and bureaucratic can be successfully substituted by computers software operated by a well trained clerk. The work overload would be quite alleviated or even leave of being. It means better opportunities for nurses to be closer of their patients.

This opening made a great number of students come back to the classrooms, which forced the IES, in many cases, to review its positions, information and communication processes, and to search new indicative of management and evaluation. The instauration by the Brazilian Government of the SINAES - National System of Evaluation of Higher Education in April 14 of 2004 imposed ten evaluatives dimensions that started to be followed by the higher education institutions. In this direction, this work is a case study developed in the Uni?o Social Camiliana and aim to evaluate, through the parameters proposed by the SINAES, how this organization is structured considering the communication and information processes. Improvements are also considered based in the concepts of Information Management and Competitive Intelligence. This evaluation was made through two instruments: applied questionnaires and reports collected in the institution. As a result of this process, we perceive that the Information Management and Competitive Intelligence can assist the IES to deal with varied information and communication contents, contributing for the improvement of the management processes and leading to match the SINAES requirements. This work proposes improvements in the communication and information processes in the Uni?o Social Camiliana, using of the concepts of Information Management and Competitive Intelligence. / Nos ?ltimos 11 anos, as Institui??es de Ensino Superior (IES) brasileiras sofreram uma s?rie de transforma??es devido ?s pol?ticas de abertura do Ensino Superior criadas pelo Governo Federal. Esta abertura fez com que uma grande massa de alunos voltasse ?s salas de aula, o que obrigou as IES, em muitos casos, a rever seus posicionamentos, processos comunicacionais e informacionais e buscar novos indicativos de gest?o e de avalia??o. A instaura??o do SINAES Sistema Nacional de Avalia??o do Ensino Superior, em 14 de abril de 2004 pelo Estado, institucionalizou dez dimens?es avaliativas que come?aram a ser seguidas pelas institui??es de ensino. Unexpected Events in Nigerian Construction Projects: A Case of Four Construction Companies

In Nigeria, 50% to 70% of construction projects are delayed due to unexpected events that are linked to lapses in performance, near misses, and surprises. While researchers have theorized on the impact of mindfulness and information systems management (ISM) on unexpected events, information is lacking on how project teams can combine ISM and mindfulness in response to unexpected events in construction projects. The purpose of this case study was to examine how project teams can combine mindfulness with ISM in response to unexpected events during the execution phase of Nigerian construction projects. The framework of High Reliability Theory revealed that unexpected events could be minimized by mindfulness defined by 5 cognitive processes: preoccupation with failure, reluctance to simplify, sensitivity to operations, commitment to resilience, and deference to expertise. In-depth semi-structured interviews elicited the views of 24 project experts on team behaviors, tactics, and processes for combining mindfulness with ISM. Data analysis was conducted by open coding to identify and reduce data into themes, and axial coding was used to identify and isolate categories. Findings were that project teams could combine mindfulness with ISM in response to unexpected events by integrating effective risk, team, and communication management with appropriate training and technology infrastructure. If policymakers, project clients, and practitioners adopt practices suggested in this study, the implications for social change are that project management practices, organizational learning, and the performance of construction projects may improve, construction wastes may be reduced, and taxpayers may derive optimum benefits from public funds committed to construction projects.

Evaluación de los sistemas de acreditación de webs sanitarias: la experiencia de Web Médica Acreditada

La utilització d'Internet com a font d'informació sanitària és molt freqüent. La qualitat d'aquesta informació és extraordinàriament variable. Els segells de qualitat presents a les webs mediques, concedits per sistemes d'acreditació, constitueixen un instrument de millora dels serveis d'informació sanitària a Internet.A la present tesi s'analitzen les propostes i recomanacions de les principals iniciatives d'acreditació, s'estudia la percepció que tenen els responsables de webs mediques respecte a la utilitat dels segells d'acreditació i la prevalença d'ús d'aquests segells en les webs de contingut sanitari.Conclusions: la gran diversitat de recomanacions d'acreditació dificulta l'estandardització, els responsables de webs sanitàries reconeixen que el segell de WMA influeix positivament en la qualitat d'aquestes webs i existeix un ús moderat dels segells de qualitat i les webs que els presenten acostumen a ser de millor qualitat que el resta. / La utilización de Internet como fuente de información sanitaria es muy frecuente. La calidad de esta información es extraordinariamente variable. Los sellos de calidad presentes en las webs médicas, otorgados mediante sistemas de acreditación, constituyen un instrumento de mejora de los servicios de información sanitaria en Internet.En la presente tesis se analizan las propuestas y recomendaciones de las principales iniciativas de acreditación, se estudia la percepción que tienen los responsables de webs médicas respecto a la utilidad de los sellos de acreditación y la prevalencia de uso de dichos sellos de calidad en las webs de contenido sanitario. Conclusiones: la gran diversidad de recomendaciones de acreditación dificulta la estandarización, los responsables de webs sanitarias reconocen que el sello de WMA influye positivamente en la calidad de dichas webs, existe un uso moderado de los sellos de calidad y las webs que los presentan acostumbran a ser de mejor calidad que el resto. / The use of Internet as a health information source is very common. The quality of this information is widely variable. The quality seals and trust marks owned by the medical websites and granted by accreditation programmes, are good tools to improve the health services on the Internet. In this dissertation the different guidelines of the main accreditation programmes are analysed. The perception of the responsible personnel in charge of medical websites on the accreditation seal usefulness is studied as well as the prevalence usage of the quality seals in these web sites. Conclusions: the standardization is very difficult considering the wide number of guidelines and quality criteria. The responsible personnel in charge of medical websites admit that the WMA seal has a positive influence in the quality of their websites and that the seals are moderately used although the webs presenting them are usually of a higher quality then the rest.

Business Intelligence : En studie om den upplevda nyttan av att använda BI-system

An information society under constant development enables organizations to have access to a growing supply of information. Handled in an efficient manner, information can be a valuable, competitive resource. This can be achieved by investing in a Business Intelligence system (BI system). BI system's main function is to manage large amounts of unstructured data, convert it into useful information, which in turn will be used as a basis for performance management. The purpose of this study is that, through qualitative, semi-structured, in-depth interviews, to examine the perceived benefit of using BI systems to support business governance. This benefit is analyzed using theories such as traditional, bounded and flexible-bounded rationality, cognitive bias and theories of man's ability to think intuitively and reflective. The benefits of BI systems will also be analyzed using the theories of the communication process, conflicts in decision making and DIKW pyramid describing the process data, information, knowledge, wisdom. It also analyzes the benefits of BI systems using agency theory. The results show that users of BI systems are experiencing the benefits as follow: BI systems provide increased access to information in the organization, increasing the ability to handle large amounts of information, creating more fact-based decisions, freeing up time for analysis, reducing opportunistic behavior and facilitates internal communication. This creates flexibility in the bounded rationality, a more reflective decision-making process that improves the prospects to make rational decisions. Users go higher up in DIKW pyramid. BI systems reduce the information asymmetry between principal and agent. BI systems reduce uncertainty in decision reducing the risk of conflict. Training and practice are essential for BI systems to generate benefits. Unlike previous research, this study shows that BI systems are well integrated into organizations as well as live up to expectations. A new aspect of BI systems is that they reduce the risk of opportunistic behavior.

Ένας σημαντικός παράγοντας για την αποτελεσματική συνεργασία μεταξύ των μελών ομάδας εργασίας, που είναι πρωταρχικής σημασίας για την επιτυχημένη υλοποίηση των τεχνικών έργων, είναι η αποδοτική επικοινωνία τους. Η επικοινωνία αυτή, όμως, δυσχεραίνεται λόγω του κατακερματισμού του κατασκευαστικού τομέα, του τεράστιου όγκου και της ποικιλομορφίας των πληροφοριών της διαδικασίας κατασκευής, των γεωγραφικών αποστάσεων μεταξύ του κεντρικού γραφείου της κατασκευαστικής εταιρίας και των εργοταξίων, καθώς και της μοναδικότητας και της πολυπλοκότητας των τεχνικών έργων. Οι προηγούμενες ερευνητικές προσπάθειες και οι εμπορικές εφαρμογές που σχετίζονται με τη διαχείριση πληροφοριών στη βιομηχανία των κατασκευών έχουν κυρίως επικεντρωθεί στην ηλεκτρονική διαχείριση εγγράφων (αλλά όχι ουσιαστικά στη διαχείριση πληροφοριών) και έχουν θέσει το εννοιολογικό πλαίσιο των διαδικτυακών βάσεων δεδομένων για τον κατασκευαστικό κλάδο. Περαιτέρω, μερικές ερευνητικές προσπάθειες έχουν οδηγήσει σε πιλοτική ανάπτυξη συστήματος διαχείρισης πληροφοριών, αλλά αυτές έχουν εστιάσει εν γένει σε μεμονωμένα τμήματα της κατασκευαστικής διαδικασίας και στις πιο βασικές πληροφορίες αυτών. Στα πλαίσια της εργασίας σχεδιάστηκε και αναπτύχθηκε ένα διαδικτυακό σύστημα διαχείρισης και διακίνησης πληροφοριών, ως προσπάθεια βελτίωσης της επικοινωνίας των συμμετεχόντων στην κατασκευαστική διαδικασία. Το σύστημα αποτελεί δεδομενο-κεντρική προσέγγιση, σε αντίθεση με τις εγγραφο-κεντρικές προσεγγίσεις των υπαρχόντων συστημάτων, και έχει δώσει έμφαση στον αναλυτικό σχεδιασμό της βάσης δεδομένων. Η ανάπτυξη του συστήματος βασίστηκε σε διερεύνηση που έγινε με χρήση ερωτηματολογίου και έδειξε ότι η ελληνική κατασκευαστική βιομηχανία δεν χρησιμοποιεί γενικά προηγμένα συστήματα διαχείρισης πληροφοριών κυρίως λόγω της περιορισμένης αποτελεσματικότητας των υπαρχόντων συστημάτων. Το προτεινόμενο σύστημα αποτελείται από μία δομημένη σχεσιακή βάση δεδομένων και μία δυναμική, οδηγούμενη από δεδομένα, διαδικτυακή εφαρμογή που επιτρέπει στους χρήστες του συστήματος να αλληλεπιδρούν μακρόθεν με τη βάση δεδομένων. Η βάση δεδομένων σχεδιάστηκε μετά από διερεύνηση και καταγραφή τόσο των χρηστών του συστήματος όσο και των απαιτούμενων πληροφοριών. Ο τελικός σχεδιασμός της βάσης δεδομένων, ο οποίος προέκυψε μετά από βρόχους μοντελοποίησης οντοτήτων και κανονικοποίησης, περιλαμβάνει 32 τύπους οντότητας με 42 σχέσεις μεταξύ τους και 172 ιδιότητες συνολικά. Ο σχεδιασμός της βάσης δεδομένων ολοκληρώθηκε με την ανάπτυξη 70 ερωτημάτων, που αποτελούν είτε συνδυασμό ανάκτησης δεδομένων που πληρούν συγκεκριμένα κριτήρια είτε προϊόντα επεξεργασίας των δεδομένων. Οι χρήστες του συστήματος μπορούν να αλληλεπιδρούν με τη βάση δεδομένων μέσω της διαδικτυακής εφαρμογής και να εκτελούν συγκεκριμένες λειτουργίες, όπως εισαγωγή, αναζήτηση, θέαση, τροποποίηση/ενημέρωση και διαγραφή δεδομένων. Η πρόσβαση στον ιστότοπο του συστήματος ελέγχεται με ονόματα και κωδικούς πρόσβασης. Η υλοποίηση της βάσης δεδομένων και της διαδικτυακής εφαρμογής έγινε με τα λογισμικά MS-Access και Dreamweaver MX αντίστοιχα. Ως τεχνολογία εξυπηρετητή χρησιμοποιήθηκαν οι Active Server Pages, ως γλώσσα προγραμματισμού η VBScript και ως εξυπηρετητής δικτύου ο Internet Information Server. Η λειτουργικότητα και η αποτελεσματικότητα του συστήματος ελέγχθηκαν με την πιλοτική εφαρμογή. Το σύστημα παρουσιάζει ικανοποιητική αποτελεσματικότητα ως προς τη δυναμική ενημέρωση των πληροφοριών, την επεξεργασία των δεδομένων και την παροχή αξιόπιστων αποτελεσμάτων. Με την αποκτηθείσα εμπειρία εκτιμάται ότι τα διαδικτυακά συστήματα διαχείρισης πληροφοριών με σχεδιασμό λεπτομερούς βάσης δεδομένων μπορούν να βελτιώσουν σημαντικά την επικοινωνία των συμμετεχόντων στην κατασκευή τεχνικών έργων με αποτέλεσμα την αύξηση της παραγωγικότητας της κατασκευαστικής ομάδας, την οικονομία χρόνου και πόρων, και τη βελτίωση της ποιότητας κατασκευής. / Communicating effectively among task groups is one of the most important factors for the success of a project. This communication, however, is hindered by the extended fragmentation of the construction industry, the large volumes and wide dissimilarity of the information involved in the construction process, and the uniqueness and complexity of construction projects. The distance between the construction company headquarters and construction sites augments the communication problem. Previous research efforts and commercial applications concerning information management for the construction industry have mainly focused on electronic document management and have set the conceptual framework of web databases for the construction industry. Further, some of the research efforts have included pilot implementation of management systems, but rather on parts of the construction process and including only the most basic information. A web-based system that facilitates construction information management and communication is designed and implemented. Unlike common document-based systems, the present work focuses on demonstrating the potential of data-centric web databases in enhancing the communication process during project execution. The system development has taken into consideration results from a questionnaire-based research in the Greek construction industry, which has indicated the absence of advanced information management systems, mainly because of the limited efficiency of existing systems. The proposed system consists of a relational database and a dynamic, data-driven web application that allows the end users to remotely interact with the database. The database design, which has been preceded by an end users analysis and an information analysis, has involved loops of entity modelling and normalisation. The database contains 32 tables with 42 relationships among them, a total of 172 fields, and 70 queries that constitute either retrieval of data that satisfy preset criteria or products of data processing. End users access the database through the internet and can perform certain transactions, such as insert, search, view, update, and delete data. The access to the system is controlled with usernames and passwords. The system has been implemented using MS-Access as the database management system and Macromedia Dreamweaver MX for developing the data-driven web application. Active Server Pages have been selected as server technology, VBScript as the programming language, and Internet Information Server as the web server. The effectiveness and efficiency of the system has been tested with a pilot application. Results from the pilot application demonstrate the technical feasibility of the system and its enhanced capability, compared to ordinary practices, to provide concise and reliable information, quick/remote access, and prompt updating potential. As a result, communication among project participants can improve, misunderstandings can be reduced or eliminated, and more time can be spent on decision-making. Ultimately, this will lead to increased productivity, time and cost savings, as well as to higher construction quality.

Le soutien parental à l’autonomie et l’honnêteté : le rôle médiateur de l’intériorisation de la valeur de l’honnêteté et de l’analyse coûts/bénéfices

Une communication honnête entre l’adolescent(e) et son parent est associée à un développement plus sain chez l’adolescent(e) (Stattin & Kerr, 2000). La présente étude s’intéresse à la façon dont les parents peuvent favoriser l’honnêteté chez leurs adolescents. En nous basant sur la Théorie de l’Autodétermination (Deci & Ryan, 2000), nous postulons que plus les parents soutiennent l’autonomie de leurs adolescents, plus ceux-ci sont honnêtes avec leurs parents. Nous postulons également qu’il y aurait deux variables médiatrices de cette relation : l’intégration de la valeur de l’honnêteté chez les adolescents ainsi que leur perception des coûts et des bénéfices vis-à-vis du fait d’être honnête avec leurs parents. Des analyses de modélisation par équations structurales se basant sur 174 dyades parent-adolescent ont démontré que plus les parents soutiennent l’autonomie de leurs adolescents, plus les adolescents intègrent la valeur de l’honnêteté et plus ils perçoivent des bénéfices élevés, et de faibles coûts, à être honnêtes avec leurs parents. L’intégration de la valeur de l’honnêteté et le fait de percevoir davantage de bénéfices que de coûts à être honnête prédisaient par la suite une communication plus honnête entre l’adolescent(e) et son parent. Le fait que le parent valorise l’honnêteté contribuait aussi à l’intégration de la valeur de l’honnêteté chez l’adolescent(e). / Honest communication in parent-adolescent relationships is a precursor of adolescents’ healthy development (Stattin & Kerr, 2000). This study investigates how parents can foster their adolescents’ honest communication. In line with self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 2000), we postulated that the more parents are autonomy supportive, the more their adolescents would be honest with them. We also postulated that this relation would be mediated by two variables: adolescents’ integration of the honesty value and their perception of the costs/benefits of being honest with their parents. Results from Structural Equation Modeling with 174 parent-adolescent dyads showed that the more parents were autonomy supportive, the more adolescents integrated the value of honesty and the more they perceived high benefits and low costs in being honest with their parents. These variables, in turn, were positively related to adolescents’ honest communication behaviors. Parental valuation of honesty also predicted adolescents’ integration of the honesty value.
