New Media and ICT for Social Change and Development in China

Shi, Song 01 September 2013 (has links)
As the country with biggest Internet population, by December 2011, China had at least 513 million Internet users. As the biggest developing country in the world, in the past three decades China experienced rapid social change and enormous economic development. The impacts of new media and ICT (Information and Communication Technology) on social change and development in China have attracted increasing attention among scholar communities. This dissertation aims to study the new media and ICT for social change and development phenomena in China. It draws upon data from my fieldwork and participant observations in the past three years as well as a nationwide large sample survey of ICT use among Chinese CSOs (civil society organizations). I situate this research primarily in the theoretical framework of communication for development and social change studies (e.g., Servaes, 1999; Servaes, 2008). In this research, new media and ICT for social change phenomena refer to the widely emerging new media and ICT for social change and development policies, projects, or actions initiated by different stakeholders including government, CSOs, and individual activists. Through a case analysis approach, this research analyzes specific new media and ICT for social change cases, conducted by different stakeholders, concerning urgent social change issues such as digital inequality, CSOs empowerment, government accountability and transparency, and hunger/malnutrition using various communication for development and social change theories as well as other new media studies theories and the ICT/new media for social change model that I propose in Chapter two. This research reveals: how different stakeholders engage in new media for social change and development interventions (policies, projects or actions); the communication channels involved in these interventions; the relation and the interactions of different stakeholders in these new media for social change interventions; the sustainability issue of these social change and development interventions. The findings of the research show that the new media for social change model I propose is an effective analytical framework for the study of new media for social change. The research reveals that a multi-channel perspective which incorporates ICTs and other communication channels as well as the interactions between different channels is of great significance in the study of new media for social change. Moreover, the analysis of the interactions between different communication channels shows that in the media environment of convergence culture (Jenkins, 2006), in social change actions, the relation between ICT channels and other communication channels is not an either/or relation. They interact with each and reinforce each other in the social change actions. The research also shows that the multi-stakeholders approach I employed can significantly enrich our knowledge of the new media for social change phenomena. The multi-dimensional relations and interactions between different stakeholders in social change interventions are important issues that the study of new media for social change should address.

A Deweyan Perspective on Knowledge Producing Schools: Re-creative technologies for communities of inquirers

Schneider, Sandra Beth 20 November 2006 (has links)
This dissertation is an investigation into Knowledge Producing Schools (KPS). KPS is a socio-cultural change effort that reforms that traditional structures of schooling and the connections between schools and the communities in which schools are embedded. KPS schools attempts, through New Literacies, to bring out-of-school practices into schools, in an effort to make students' schooling experiences overall and those incorporating technology more relevant. The position of this dissertation supports KPS goals while rejecting the pedagogy of New Literacies. Instead this dissertations builds upon two elements implicit in KPS/New Literacies work, social inquiry and the facilitation of publics. By making these implict KPS elements explicit this dissertation offers a KPS-Dewey hybrid that locates socio-cultral change efforts in public social inquiry contexts that supports and helps create the communal conditions that can facilitates able, active, publics. These able publics work toward community self-management and alternative representation while dealing with daily problems and current matters of concern. Able publics have been a recent concern in the educational literature that calls for the need of educational reform to be resituated as social movements for education equity. / Ph. D.

Brasil e a globalização: produção intelectual brasileira nos anos 1990, entre o real e o imaginário / Brazil and the globalization: brazilian intelectual production in 1990\'s, between the real and the imaginary

Seixas, Luiz Carlos 06 April 2018 (has links)
In the passage from the 20th century to the 21st, Brazil was heavily impacted by a globalization both capitalist and neoliberal. The elected governments along the decade of 1990 aligned themselves with the neoliberal project, represented by the Washington Consensus. Amidst this process, the overall guidelines of the mandates of Fernando Collor, Itamar Franco, and Fernando Henrique Cardoso obeyed the neoliberal prescriptions, that is, its set of rules and fundamental norms appointed by international organizations such as the GATT/WTO, the IMF, and the World Bank. Measures pointed toward the reform of the state, monetary stability, retrenchment of social expenditures, privatization of public services, deregulation of the workplace and of the economy, and the removal of customs barriers were its motto. Simultaneously, the ideas of globalization and mundialization, of modernity and post-modernity developed. In Brazil at that time, those themes gain relevance, and a group of intellectuals sets out to reflect on and analyze its impacts. The subject of globalization, along with its developments and consequences, becomes central to a few academic dossiers and books published during that period, guided by analysis regarding the role of the State, techniques and technologies, identity, diversity, national culture and mass culture, and globalization and dependency. At the same time that globalization is reflected upon, it subsumes the thinker with its new techniques and technologies. This study aims to understand how this debate was established in the country during the decade of 1990 and attempts to bring it to the present. The research had, as sources, articles, academic magazines, and books published on the subject.

January 2008 (has links)
Abstract: In parallel with the advancement of technology and use of the term "the knowledge society", realizes it is people who do not know sign to the satisfaction surveys and readings. Some teachers and school librarians concern itself only with the guidance in the acquisition of skills for the use of technological resources in tracking information. Forget that the environment of the library, more than its physical space, must reach the homes of students, classrooms and other contributions of teaching materials. Therefore, it is answering questions such as: The librarian knows who is a mediator? As has been the mediation? The librarian accompanies technological change, inserting them into their daily lives do? The virtualization of the information facilitates the use of sources / resources research and the ability to select information and expand knowledge? The study aimed to: assess the perception of the librarian as its responsibility in daily mediate the search school, regardless of the environment in which it is; examine the attitude and technical skills / knowledge of the librarian in mediation of the search in a time of growing virtualization of documents; verify the process of the use of technological resources in the search for information; identify the existence of partnership between librarian and professor in the practice of research school; obtain subsidies for proposals for projects / activities aimed at finding solutions to the search school reaches its objectives. Intent is a theoretical through the relevant literature and to collect data applied to be a focused interview with the professional librarian in six schools of basic education of the city of Londrina. / Mestre

The research took place at the State School Dom Alano Marie Du Noday Palmas (Tocantins, Brazil). The theoretical reference adopted treats the context of the knowledge society, education policies aimed to insertion of technology in schools, pedagogical practices through the use of technology and its articulation with the curriculum and project methodology, supported by Boaventura de Sousa Santos, Toffler, Dowbor , Hargreaves, Burbules, Mattelart, Fuks, Chauí, Almeida, Moraes, Pacheco, Apple, Silva, Gimeno Sacristán, Costa Monteiro and Loureiro, Batista, Cuban, Dewey, Schön, Goodson, Hernández, Prado, Freire, Papert, Almeida and Valente, Cappelletti, Esteban, among others. The theoretical-methodological principles are based on qualitative research supported in interpretive research of Erickson (1984, 1986, 1989). The data were collected from the following sources: documents related to UCA Project, Political- Pedagogical Project, field diary, interviews, focal group and questionnaires. The research subjects were students, parents, teachers, project managers and Training Brazil-UCA trainer at school. This study shows that the school lived with some different actions and conventional practices in the same time. The parents indicated that their children became more autonomous. Despite favorable to the insertion of the laptop at the school, parents had a wary eye about the changes that the computer causes in teaching practice, and they said that there was no change in the relationship between parents and the school. Managers betray the conception of the technologies being adornment, teaching and learning appendage. The students recognize that the class is more interesting. They can explore many tools. They learn better and in a different way. The teachers conceptions about the education laptop use in class is conditioned to technological appropriation, the technicalpedagogical support and influence of initial training. In the fifth and sixth years of the Dom Alano Marie Du Noday, the study revealed that two women teachers created loopholes. They gave new meaning to what they did when incorporated cooperative work, dialogue and reflection on teaching practice, establishing improvement in the teacher-student and student-student relationship. Those two women teachers had the student how the center teaching and learning process. Among other teachers of the Dom Alano Marie Du Noday, with whom there was also approach on the subject studied, it was verified that they walked toward a reflective practice, but the those teachers activities involving the laptop had not student how center of the process of teaching and learning. In many cases, the use of computer reinforces actions carried out with pencil and paper. Finally, it is considered that the answers are provisional and concerning the researched moment / Esta tese teve o objetivo de investigar as práticas pedagógicas com o uso do laptop educacional em sala de aula, tendo em vista a implantação do Projeto Um Computador por Aluno (UCA).

Data mining methods applied to healthcare problems

Espinoza, Sofia Elizabeth 02 July 2012 (has links)
Growing adoption of health information technologies is allowing healthcare providers to capture and store enormous amounts of patient data. In order to effectively use this data to improve healthcare outcomes and processes, clinicians need to identify the relevant measures and apply the correct analysis methods for the type of data at hand. In this dissertation, we present various data mining and statistical methods that could be applied to the type of datasets that are found in healthcare research. We discuss the process of identification of appropriate measures and statistical tools, the analysis and validation of mathematical models, and the interpretation of results to improve healthcare quality and safety. We illustrate the application of statistics and data mining techniques on three real-world healthcare datasets. In the first chapter, we develop a new method to assess hydration status using breath samples. Through analysis of the more than 300 volatile organic compounds contained in human breath, we aim to identify markers of hydration. In the second chapter, we evaluate the impact of the implementation of an electronic medical record system on the rate of inpatient medication errors and adverse drug events. The objective is to understand the impact on patient safety of different information technologies in a specific environment (inpatient pediatrics) and to provide recommendations on how to correctly analyze count data with a large amount of zeros. In the last chapter, we develop a mathematical model to predict the probability of developing post-operative nausea and vomiting based on patient demographics and clinical history, and to identify the group of patients at high-risk.
