The evolution of metabolism regulation is an intertwined process, where different strategies are constantly being developed towards a cognitive ability to perceive and respond to an environment. Organisms depend on an orchestration of a complex set of chemical reactions: maintaining homeostasis with a changing environment, while simultaneously sending material and energetic resources to where they are needed. The success of an organism requires efficient metabolic regulation, highlighting the connection between evolution, population dynamics and the underlying biochemistry.
In this work, I represent organisms as coupled information-processing networks, that is, gene-regulatory networks receiving signals from the environment and acting on chemical reactions, eventually affecting material flows. I discuss the mechanisms through which metabolism control is improved during evolution and how the nonlinearities of competition influence this solution-searching process.
The propagation of the populations through the resulting landscapes generally point to the role of the rhythm of cell division as an essential phenotypic feature driving evolution. Subsequently, as it naturally follows, different representations of organisms as oscillators are constructed to indicate more precisely how the interplay between competition, maturation timing and cell-division synchronisation affects the expected evolutionary outcomes, not always leading to the \"survival of the fastest\".

Ein wirkungsvolles Finanz und Unternehmenscontrolling in mittelständischen Bauunternehmen muss sich grundlegend von dem in Unternehmen der stationären Industrie mit kontinuierlichen Fertigungsprozessen unterscheiden. Es unterliegt besonderen Kontextfaktoren wie z. B. dem besonderen Charakter der Bauindustrie als einer Bereitstellungsindustrie mit im wesentlichen auftragsgebundener langfristiger Einzelfertigung, einem hohen Vorfinanzierungsgrad, einer hohen Bedeutung einzelner Bauaufträge für das finanzielle Gleichgewicht und den hohen Risiken eines Zahlungsausfalls. Erforderlich ist die Planung, Kontrolle und Steuerung des finanziellen Gleichgewichts im Umfeld eines langfristigen einzelprojektorientierten Leistungserstellungsprozesses in Verbindung mit einem auktionsorientierten Markt (Submissionen). Die finanziellen, personellen und informationstechnischen Unternehmensressourcen in mittelständischen Bauunternehmen sind grundsätzlich begrenzt, sowohl betragsmäßig als auch hinsichtlich der möglichen Dauer einer Beanspruchung. Mittelständische Bauunternehmen können nur relativ einfache und „preiswerte“ integrierte baubetriebliche IV-Systeme einsetzen. Hochintegrierte baubetriebliche IV-Systeme können nur in der Form von Standardsoftwaresystemen realisiert werden. Notwendig ist die einfach nutzbare und wirtschaftliche Einbindung von IV-gestützten Baustellen- bzw. Projektcontrollingsystemen in das Finanzcontrolling in integrierten baubetrieblichen IV-Systemen, die Möglichkeit einer zeitnahen Datenerfassung und der Datenintegration der Kalkulation sowie die Prozessintegration zwischen IV-gestützter Finanzbuchführung und IV-gestütztem Finanzcontrolling.

Im ersten Kapitel legt ein Experiment die Schwierigkeit mit hypothetischem Denken bzw. mit dem Lernen aus hypothetischen Ereignissen offen. Im Kapitel Zwei untersucht ein anderes Experiment, wie Informationsverarbeitung die Reaktionen der Investoren auf Ambiguität verändert, denn ein eindeutiges, optimales Lernverhalten gibt es unter Ambiguität nicht. Das letzte Kapitel stellt anhand desselben Experiments die Unabhängigkeit zwischen dem Lernprozess und den Risikopräferenzen in Frage. / This dissertation investigates various channels through which information processing affects investment decisions. Controlled laboratory experiments allow for studying how subjects’ decisions vary with the type of information and the decision-context. The experiment in the first chapter discloses the difficulty with contingent reasoning, i.e. learning from hypothetical events. A different experiment in Chapter Two analyzes how information processing changes investors’ reactions to ambiguity—an environment with multiple rational learning rules. Using the same experiment, the last chapter questions the independence between belief updating and risk preferences.

Predictive coding theorizes the capacity of neural structures to form predictions about forthcoming sensory events based on previous sensory input. This concept increasingly gains attention within experimental psychology and cognitive neuroscience. In auditory research, predictive coding has become a useful model that elegantly explains different aspects of auditory sensory processing and auditory perception. Many of these aspects are backed up by experimental evidence. However, certain fundamental features of predictive auditory processing have not been addressed so far by experimental investigations, like correlates of neural predictions that show up before the onset of an expected event. Four experiments were designed to investigate the proposed mechanism under more realistic conditions as compared to previous studies by manipulating different aspects of predictive (un)certainty, thereby examining the ecological validity of predictive processing in audition. Moreover, predictive certainty was manipulated gradually across five conditions from unpredictable to fully predictable in linearly increasing steps which drastically decreases the risk of discovering incidental findings. The results obtained from the conducted experiments partly confirm the results from previous studies by demonstrating effects of predictive certainty on ERPs in response to omissions of potentially predictable stimuli. Furthermore, results partly suggest that the auditory system actively engages in stimulus predictions in a literal sense as evidenced by gradual modulations of pre-stimulus ERPs associated with different degrees of predictive certainty. However, the current results remain inconsistent because the observed effects were relatively small and could not consistently be replicated in all follow-up experiments. The observed effects could be regained after accumulating the data across all experiments in order to increase statistical power. However, certain questions remain unanswered regarding a valid interpretation of the results in terms of predictive coding. Based on the current state of results, recommendations for future investigations are provided at the end of the current thesis in order to improve certain methodological aspects of investigating predictive coding in audition, including considerations on the design of experiments, possible suitable measures to investigate predictive coding in audition, recommendations for data acquisition and data analysis as well as recommendations for publication of results.
