Islamic insurance Takaful and its applications in Saudi Arabia

Alhumoudi, Yuosef January 2013 (has links)
Takaful is an Arabic term meaning solidarity, which is used to describe a system of Islamic insurance that functions as an alternative to conventional insurance. Takaful, as a form of insurance, is entering a fast growing global market, promoted by the growth of the Asian economies and economic prosperity in the Middle East. The Takaful system is based on the principle of cooperation or mutual assistance, and is Tabarru (Voluntary), meaning that the attendant risks are spread collectively across the group of volunteers. The Takaful system is best understood as a pact (or policy) ascribed to by a group of participants who choose to jointly guarantee themselves against loss or damage suffered by individual signatories, as confirmed in the policy. The prediction is that Takaful will be the default choice for citizens in Islamic countries in the near future. The combination of the system’s financial efficacy, combined with principles underwritten by religious correctness has accentuated the attractiveness of this, and similar, Islamic banking and financial products to Muslims. By examining the Saudi insurance sector, which is a market leader in the region, this thesis delivers a brief history of insurance in general and of the Saudi insurance legal framework in particular, and by so doing sheds light on Islamic insurance Takaful applications worldwide. It also engages in an evaluation of insurance products available in Saudi Arabia to determine whether the facilities offered by the insurance companies operating in the country incorporate obstacles and obstructions, which may impact on the effectiveness of governmental regulations and supervision in relation to setting a legislative framework. This influences the extent to which the foundations for the insurance market are secured in Saudi Arabia. The aim of the present study also leads to some suggestions and recommendations for future practice.

Analysing the various approaches to the determination of economic capital by South African life insurers

Beukes, Nicky 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: There are conflicting aims among the various stakeholders of a business. Shareholders wish to maximise their return on capital, whereas debt holders and customers wish to minimise the risk to capital. This conflict has led to the emergence of economic capital. Financial services companies, such as insurers, manage risk on behalf of their customers and at the same time make profits for the shareholders of the business. A company that employs economic capital analysis will strike a balance between too much capital, which can lead to an excessive cost of insurance, or not enough capital, which can lead to an unacceptable risk of insolvency. Sound financial management is required to manage the capital resources of the business. The aim on the part of management is to calculate an economic capital requirement for the business that can absorb any financial shocks or losses and provide the flexibility needed to continue with day·to·day operations. The issue is therefore whether to assess the amount of capital required based on a statutory view of solvency, or an "economic" (fair value) view of solvency. The statutory view of solvency is the capital adequacy requirement (CAR) as described by the Financial Services Board (FSB). CAR provides the insurer with an approximately 95% confidence in its ability to meet its obligations as they fall. More companies are moving towards an economic capital approach when assessing capital requirements. There is also much uncertainty around the calculation of economic capital. Apart from guidance note 104 of the Actuarial Society of South Africa that stipulates how CAR should be calculated for insurers, no single approach exists for the calculation of economic capital. Calculation methods are still emerging and companies have started to develop their own internal models to calculate economic capital. Rating agencies such as Fitch have introduced their own models with the objective of reviewing insurers' internal models. Various techniques have developed over the last few years to asses a company's capital requirements. Factors such as company size, resources and complexity of the insurer influence the use of deterministic or leading edge actuarial techniques to calculate capital requirements. Stochastic modelling, risk neutral and real world techniques are examples of sophisticated methods. Another element to consider in the calculation of economic capital is the understanding, modelling and quantification of financial and business risks. Capital adequacy requirement, CAR cover and excess of assets over liabilities were analysed for five South African insurers. The analysis illustrated that the relationship between CAR and excess is different for each insurer. This trend can be attributed to the unique risk profile of the business, the nature of the organisation's products and the maturity of risk management practices. The analysis also indicated that in the case of all the five insurers, the growth in excess over the period 2003-2007 exceeded the growth in CAR for the same period. This scenario could be the result of management actions, such as risk diversification and sophistication of capital modeling. It is clear that economic capital is of primary concern to insurance executives, shareholders and regulators.

The Swedish Insurance Sector’s View on Climate Risks - Adaptation Strategies to the consequences of current weather variations and expected climate change

André, Karin, Brunge, Johanna January 2005 (has links)

In recent years Sweden has been struck by several cases of weather related property damage resulting from the severe flooding in 2000, 2002 and the storm Gudrun at the beginning of 2005. The importance of strategies enabling society to adapt to coming changes in weather patterns has been confirmed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as well within the international and national policy arena. It is reasonable to believe that the insurance sector would be among the first within the financial realm to feel the effects of expected climate change. This qualitative study aims to investigate how the Swedish insurance sector relates and deals with the consequences of current weather variations and expected climate change. Research areas of importance concern 1.The role of the insurance sector. 2. Knowledge and other actors and 3. Adaptation strategies, current and future.

Comprehensive theories regarding adaptive strategies have been applied to the insurance company’s operations. The empirical material is based on interviews with relevant employees at the four largest insurance companies in Sweden as well with the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) and the Swedish Insurance Federation. The overall results show that the insurance sector considers the climate issue to be important to future operations; however, since Sweden has not yet been affected by climate change, they prefer, at this time at least, to monitor developments and gather knowledge. Due to their position on this matter, the insurance sector’s role in the climate debate is, generally speaking, considered to be minor whereas the more important actors are authorities, municipalities and the government. Reinsurance companies are seen as a significant player in the market due to many factors; most note ably that they indirectly have the capacity to affect the entire Swedish insurance sector by raising the costs for reinsurance premiums. However, the climate change issue is of importance yet, of higher relevance is adaptation to present weather variations.

Thinking like a designer : Hur Design Thinking kan användas som strategiskt verktyg för affärsutveckling

Wernberg Andersson, Micaela, Håkansson, Nicolina January 2010 (has links)

Johansson, Andreas, Torstensson, Oscar January 2014 (has links)
With more than 400 companies to choose between, the Swedish insurance sector is gigantic. The competition is fierce, and the insurance companies have to fight over customers and market shares. Our purpose with this dissertation is to analyze which insurance relevant factors determine which company the private consumer chooses. This dissertation has a quantitative research method, a positivistic philosophy and a deductive approach. Our study indicates that the following factors have a positive influence on insurers in their selection of insurance companies : Low price, high quality insurance service, professional staff, high accessibility and strong trademarks. Bank employees also tend to have influence on insurers in their selection of insurance companies. This study selectively focuses on the Swedish market, leaving room for further research in a global perspective. Additional research regarding companies selection of insurance companies may therefore be interesting. Research has traditionally focused on the existing customers, and how to keep them. In contrast, research concerning how people choose their insurance company has been limited, both nationally and internationally. We believe this dissertation may be of value for insurance companies because the knowledge of the factors may be important for attracting customers.

Portfolio Försäkra The digital service innovation readiness of an insurance brokerage company.

Inkovs, Stefans, Abdullah, Miran January 2023 (has links)
This study explores the digital service development and innovative technology integration of Portfolio Försäkra, an insurance brokerage firm. During the initial discussions with the CEO, Andreas Adolfsson, it was noted that the company faced gaps in its digital service offerings and lacked the adoption of innovative technologies. The observed shortcomings are not unique to Portfolio Försäkra but potentially prevalent across the insurance sector, signifying a major impact on market competition. In today's digital age, expertise in technology and innovative practices is crucial to the success of the insurance sector. Improved digital service innovation is essential for the customers to utilize information more efficiently, ultimately leading to increased customer loyalty and satisfaction. Therefore, the need for digital service improvement in the insurance sector is imperative. The aim of this research is to delve deeper into the digital opportunities available to Portfolio Försäkra and other insurance companies that currently lack the necessary technological advancements. We adopt the role of researcher, conducting interviews and communicating with Portfolio Försäkra's employees. Our data analysis and interviews will help identify problematic areas that could hinder the company's development and customer satisfaction. The findings suggest that the integration of innovation and digital technology must become an integral part of Portfolio Försäkra's company culture to ensure sustainable and long-term growth. The results of this study offer valuable insights for other organizations in the insurance sector seeking to enhance their digital service offerings and customer satisfaction.
