Theoretical and experimental study of optical solutions for analog-to-digital conversion of high bit-rate signals / Étude théorique et expérimentale de techniques optiques pour la conversion analogique-numérique de signaux de communication à très haut débit

Nguyen, Trung-Hiên 19 November 2015 (has links)
Bi-dimensional modulation formats based on amplitude and phase signal modulation, are now commonly used in optical communications thanks to breakthroughs in the field of electronic and digital signal processing (DSP) required in coherent optical receivers. Photonic solutions could compensate for nowadays limitations of electrical circuits bandwidth by facilitating the signal processing parallelization. Photonic is particularly interesting for signal sampling thanks to available stable optical clocks. The heart of the present work concerns analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) as a key element in coherent detection. A prototype of linear optical sampling using an original solution for the optical sampling source, is built and validated with the successful equivalent time reconstruction of NRZ, QPSK and 16-QAM signals. Some optical and electrical limitations of the system are experimentally and numerically analyzed, notably the extinction ratio of the optical source or the ADC parameters (bandwidth, integration time, effective number of bits ENOB). Moreover, some new DSPs tools are developed for optical transmission using bi-dimensional modulation formats (amplitude and phase). Two solutions are proposed for IQ quadrature imbalance compensation in single carrier optical coherent transmission: an original method of maximum signal-to-noise ratio estimation (MSEM) and a new structure for joint compensation and equalization; these methods are experimentally and numerically validated with 16-QAM signals. Moreover, an improved solution for carrier recovery (frequency offset and phase estimation) based on a circular harmonic expansion of a maximum loglikelihood function is studied for the first time in the context of optical telecommunications. This solution which can operate with any kind of bi-dimensional modulation format signal is numerically validated up to 128-QAM. All the DSP tools developed in this work are finally used in a demonstration of a 10 Gbaud QPSK 100 km transmission experiment, featuring a strong non-linear phase noise limitation and regenerated using a phase preserving and power limiting function based on a photonic crystal nanocavity.

Future Cognitive Ability: US IQ Prediction until 2060 Based on NAEP

Rindermann, Heiner, Pichelmann, Stefan 26 November 2015 (has links) (PDF)
The US National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) measures cognitive competences in reading and mathematics of US students (last 2012 survey N = 50,000). The long-term development based on results from 1971 to 2012 allows a prediction of future cognitive trends. For predicting US averages also demographic trends have to be considered. The largest groups’ (White) average of 1978/80 was set at M = 100 and SD = 15 and was used as a benchmark. Based on two past NAEP development periods for 17-year-old students, 1978/80 to 2012 (more optimistic) and 1992 to 2012 (more pessimistic), and demographic projections from the US Census Bureau, cognitive trends until 2060 for the entire age cohort and ethnic groups were estimated. Estimated population averages for 2060 are 103 (optimistic) or 102 (pessimistic). The average rise per decade is dec = 0.76 or 0.45 IQ points. White-Black and White-Hispanic gaps are declining by half, Asian-White gaps treble. The catch-up of minorities (their faster ability growth) contributes around 2 IQ to the general rise of 3 IQ; however, their larger demographic increase reduces the general rise at about the similar amount (-1.4 IQ). Because minorities with faster ability growth also rise in their population proportion the interactive term is positive (around 1 IQ). Consequences for economic and societal development are discussed.

Analysis of the implementation of Johannesburg inner city renewal strategies.

Nkokoto, Mokela 28 February 2007 (has links)
Student number: 0200613W Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment Master of Property Development and Management. / This paper is a report on the research undertaken to evaluate the implementation of the Urban Renewal strategies that the City of Johannesburg adopted for the CBD renewal through the Blue IQ. The study was restricted to the views expressed by the general community, business community, Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA). Johannesburg Housing Company (JHC), Blue IQ, Gauteng Development Agency and Gauteng Economic Development Agency (GEDA), which are the main role players in the CBD renewal effort. There was administered questioner to the members of the Business and general communities that were randomly picked using the fish bowl method. Interviews were conducted with the senior executive staff of JDA. Blue IQ, JHC. Statistics derived from the above company s websites was used as well. The results of the study show that the renewal strategy has been largely successful in so far as a number of factors, which have contributed to the CBD decay such as poor infrastructure and slumps. There have also been considerable efforts to address acute shortage of parking space by private partners such as financial institutions. Although crime has decreased it is still posing a serious challenge as most people still consider the CBD high risk. However there is still a room for improvement, which includes: the enhancement of safety and security, the infrastructure maintenance policy and the enforcement of the municipality by laws and town planning scheme. Overall the strategies have also improved the economic performance of the city significantly though unemployment still remain high with the ever increasing number of people coming to seek opportunities.

Exploring Teachers' and Black Male Students' Perceptions of Intelligence

Williams, Patrick Anthony 02 May 2009 (has links)
This study explored teachers' perceptions of intelligence of 11th-grade Black male students and how students themselves perceived their own intelligence in light of Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligence. Qualitative research methods were used to gain novel understanding of the students' and teachers' feelings, and perceptions as outlined in the research questions. Two versions of ecological systems theory provided the underpinnings for the framework of this study: 1) Brönfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Theory, and 2) Spencer's PVEST (Phenomenological Variant of Ecological Systems Theory) model, which is an adaptation of the ecology model to Black students in the United States. In a large urban school district in the Southeast section of the United States, twenty-six students completed an online survey of Gardner's Multiple Intelligences. Seven Black male students were selected and interviewed along with ten of their teachers. The study found that despite the negative stereotypes toward Black males by society, the Black male students in this study interpreted intelligence to be multifaceted and perceived themselves as intelligent Black males. The teachers of the Black male students perceived them as intelligent and also interpreted intelligence to be multifaceted. The Black male students were resilient in debunking the idea that Black males were not considered intelligent in a society where negative Black male stereotypes abound.

Differential effect of deletions and duplications on general intelligence and social responsiveness

Tamer, Petra 11 1900 (has links)
Deleterious deletions and duplications (copy number variations, CNVs) are identified in up to 11% of individuals referred to neurodevelopmental pediatric clinics. However, only few recurrent CNVs have been formally associated with neurodevelopmental disorders because the majority are too rare to perform individual association studies. We recently developed a new framework to estimate the effect size of undocumented CNVs on non-verbal intelligence quotient (NVIQ) and sought to extend this approach to another score measuring autistic traits. We identified CNVs in an autism sample from the Simons Simplex Collection (SSC) and MSSNG, in their first-degree relatives, in a neurodevelopmental cohort and in individuals from an unselected population. Statistical models integrating scores of the genes encompassed in the CNVs were used to explain their effect on general intelligence and on social responsiveness. Deletions and duplications decreased NVIQ and the effect of duplications was three-fold smaller than deletions. There was also a differential effect on social responsiveness: the ratio of the impairment conferred by deletions and duplications was 2:1 and this effect was mainly driven by NVIQ. Models estimates for general intelligence and social responsiveness were consistent with previously published observations. Our models, trained on CNVs encompassing >4,500 genes, suggest highly polygenic properties of CNVs with respect to cognition and social responsiveness. These models will help interpreting CNVs identified in the clinic.

The detection of high-qualified indels in exomes and their effect on cognition

Younis, Nadine 12 1900 (has links)
Genetic insertions/deletions (indels) have been linked to many neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and intellectual disability (ID). However, although they are the second most common type of genetic variant, they remain to this day difficult to identify and verify, presenting a high number of false positives. We sought to find a method that would appropriately identify high-quality indels that are likely to be true positives. We built an indel “truth set” using indels from two diagnosis-based family cohorts that were filtered according to a set of threshold values and called by several variant calling tools in order to train three machine learning models to identify the highest quality indels. The two best performing models were then used to identify high quality indels in a general population cohort that was called using only one variant calling technology. The machine learning models were able to identify higher quality indels that showed a association with IQ, although the effect size was small. The indels predicted by the models also affected a much smaller number of genes per individual than those predicted through using minimum thresholds alone. The models tend to show an overall improvement in the quality of the indels but would require further work to see if it could a noticeable and significant effect on IQ.

Systemanalyse und Entwicklung Six-Port basierter Funkempfängerarchitekturen unter Berücksichtigung analoger Störeffekte

Mailand, Marko 09 January 2008 (has links) (PDF)
Due to the increasing demand of broadband capability and reconfigurability for mobile applications, there is an enormous interest to develop appropriate analog receiver front-ends. In this respect, one promising candidate group is the Six-Port-based direct conversion receiver. The presented work focuses on the investigation of Six-Port-based mobile receiver front-ends with their specific systematical signal processing. Thereby, issues of spurious interfering signals which are generated within the down conversion process of such receivers are of special interest. Based on a comprehensive description of the analog signal processing within additive frequency conversion, a reason could be identified why existing Six-Port receivers have not found any practical application in mobile communication yet – the dynamic DC-offset. With this insight compensation techniques were developed to overcome the negative influences of the dynamic DC-offset. Furthermore, this work presents novel Six-Port-based receiver architectures which, on the one hand, keep the advantages of additive mixing systems like: low power consumption, broadband capability and simplicity of implementation especially for mm-wave transmissions. On the other hand, these novel architectures comprise compensation techniques such that systematically generated spurious signals are inherently compensated in the analog part of the receiver. Moreover, the influence of impairments of phase and amplitude within the IQ-branches of a receiver was investigated. The resulting, unwanted IQ-imbalance was shown to be a mixing method (multiplicative or additive) independent spurious effect. It is suggested to compensate for IQ-imbalance in the digital part of the receiver system. This can be realized with the use of adaptive algorithms. The comparison with conventional analog receiver architectures (especially homodyne receivers) with respect to the reception of today’s and future digitally modulated transmission signals indicate the proposed Six-Port-based receiver architectures to be suitable candidates to fulfill the difficult tasks of modern mobile communication.

Porovnání databází firem pro účely ocenění podniku / Comparation of Company Databases for Business Valuation

Kremová, Alice January 2012 (has links)
The topic of this master thesis is to compare and analyze five database of companies in terms of suitability for the process of valuation . The main reason why these databases (Albertina, Amadeus , Magnus , Market Line and Capital IQ) are used is their accessibility within the field of study Finance and Business Valuation in University of Economics in Prague. The thesis is structured with respect to the valuation process recommended by professor Mařík (2011) . The first part contains data collection and focuses primarily on general data options for each database. The second part is a detailed financial analysis describing and comparing the ratios followed by databases options in the field of strategic analysis. The possibility of calculation of NOPAT and operationally necessary capital employed is presented after strategic analysis. The last two chapters deal with the database containing capital markets data and can provide the basics for calculation of interests rate and the actual valuation based on market analysis. The conclusion summarizes the main advantages of databases as appropriate for valuation.
