"It's No Life Being a Steer": Violence, Masculinity, and Gender Performance in The Sun Also Rises and In Our Time

Thibodaux, Brock J 18 December 2015 (has links)
Nearly all discussions of Hemingway and his work touch on the theme of masculinity, a recurrent theme in all of his works. Examinations of Hemingway and his relationship to masculinity have almost unanimously treated the author as a misogynist and a champion of violent masculinity. However, since the posthumous publication of The Garden of Eden in 1986, there has been much discussion of Hemingway’s uncharacteristic use of androgynous characters in the novel. Critics have taken this as a clue that Hemingway possessed a complex attitude regarding gender fluidity, but have failed to examine the constructions of gender and identity in his earlier fiction. By examining two of his earliest works, In Our Time (1925) and The Sun Also Rises (1926), I argue that Hemingway’s complex ideas about gender performance have been hidden just beneath the surface all along.

Peter Singer's proposed value of the "person" in "Rethinking Life and Death": A critical evaluation

Johnson, Jerry Allen 28 September 2004 (has links)
This dissertation examines Peter Singer's proposed ethical value of the "person" in Rethinking Life and Death . Chapter 1 introduces and outlines Singer's proposal, which argues for abortion, infanticide, euthanasia, and assisted suicide. His proposal consists of four key points. First, there is the foundation for his proposal--rejecting creation for evolution. Second, there is the substance of his proposal--replacing the value of the "human" with the value of the "person." Third, there is the criteria for his proposal--using "indicators" and "relevant characteristics" to identify the kinds of beings who qualify as "persons." Fourth, there are the consequences of his proposal--promising an ethical "Copernican Revolution." Chapters 2-5 critically evaluate the four key ideas from Singer above. The evaluation of the respective key idea in each chapter covers five steps: (1) the context of Singer's proposal; (2) the content of Singer's proposal; (3) positive evaluation; (4) negative critique; and (5) conclusion. The research methodology for the dissertation is to treat Singer's ethical proposal on the "person" as a hypothesis to be tested by his own truth standards of logical consistency, empirical evidence, and practicality. Following these four key chapters, Chapter 6 provides "Summary and Conclusions." The conclusion of this dissertation is that Peter Singer's proposal on life and death is not to be commended because its key elements are not supported by his own standards for testing truth. In fact, when examined by his own truth tests, Singer's program should be rejected because its foundation is faulty, its substance is illusory, its criteria are circular, and its consequences would be grave. / This item is only available to students and faculty of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Literární cestovní ruch na území Česka / Literary tourism in Czechia

Ulrychová, Tereza January 2019 (has links)
The aim of the thesis was to clarify the role of literary tourism in Czechia and to evaluate its potential and possible uses. After that, a comparison based on foreign literature and sources was made between Czechia and other countries. The places selected in this thesis have a link to the life or work of a prominent Czech writer and seek to develop literary tourism, promote literature, attract visitors, etc. These are places where the writer's birthplace is open to the public and where museums with an exhibition focusing on that writer and the writer's works have been created and where literary festivals or other thematic events are organized etc. These places were approached with the offer of being involved in the making of a game called "Build your world" and a newly created smaller competition "In the footsteps of our writers". Collector magnets have been created for those who have agreed to be involved in these games. These magnets serve as a means to support the development of literary tourism in the Czech Republic and involve local actors in a nationwide event, which will raise awareness both of important writers and of the places associated with them. Very often the places involved are less visited ones. Key words: tourism, literary tourism, potential, Build your world, In the footsteps of...

Aparições de Nossa Senhora: mensagens e peregrinações na contemporaneidade / Apparitions of Nossa Senhora: Messages and Pilgrimages in contemporary

Sales, Lilian Maria Pinto 17 February 2009 (has links)
The thesis analyses Our Ladys appearances in Brazil, trying to understand the social and symbolic process supporting the creation of collective beliefs about these appearances, a process that always start with personal witness about the appearances of Our Lady. In order to analyze that, we realize a case study in the city of Jacareí, São Paulo state. The thesis reveals the process in which these appearances occur, where different factors are fundamental. Among them we shall focus: 1) the relations and connections involving individuals and groups, inserting the apparitions in a net of Mary´s demonstrations, like pilgrimages; 2) the Catholic Church role in the production of ideas and beliefs which give legitimacy to the appearances; 3) the symbolic molding of theses appearances, which are fundamental to that legitimacy; 4) the presence of long terms symbolic elements. Each one of these topics was developed in a separate chapter.

The celebrations of Nossa Senhora do Rosário\'s reign in Belo Horizonte/MG: symbolic and educational practices.

Alves, Vânia de Fátima Noronha 18 April 2008 (has links)
This study has assumed that all social practice is symbolic, therefore, an educational practice. Its focus of analysis is Nossa Senhora do Rosário\'s reign (Our Lady Rosario\'s reign) - also known as \"Congado\" (folk and religious dance), in Belo Horizonte/MG - that is a demonstration that privilege some groups of people in this city. This demonstration is typical of Afro-Brazilian people and it is very popular and important in the State of Minas Gerais, not only in the capital as well in other cities of the State. Its origin is based on the mythical narrative concerning the Saint Rosario and represents the conception of the Saint\'s devout. It means that Nossa Senhora do Rosário\'s devout (the sons of rosary) define not only their beliefs as well their modus vivendi through that narrative. This study calls in questions some considerations such as: Which images are present in the myth of Nossa Senhora do Rosário? How do these images consist the modus vivendi for all those people who follow Maria\'s rosary? How do these images become real or concrete in the devout\'s minds? How do the educational processes happen in the construction of this conception? Then, this study mainly aims to analyze the mythical images of that reign, investigating the modulations occurred in the conception, the myth and the celebration related to their educational processes. For that, the paradigm of complexity was chosen as an epistemological basis and inside it, the theories involving imaginary anthropology, profound psychology and the celebration. Besides, this study was based on preliminary studies of several authors, such as: Edgar Morin, Joseph Campbell, Gaston Bachelard, Gilbert Durand, Jean Duvignaud, Eerich Neumann and Edward Whitmong. These theoretical references allowed to analyze the archetype of Grande-Mãe (Our Great Lady) and its influence in the \"congadeiros\" (conga dancers)\' life. Then, the proposed objectives for this study were successful. The found results are expected to contribute to the knowledge about afro-descendant communities, enlarging our comprehension about society and education and even about ourselves.

This paper seeks to analyze the processes of interaction between faithful and church, specifically in social networking largest Catholic procession of Latin America: The Candle of Our Lady of Nazareth, held every second Sunday of October in the capital of Pará, Belém do Pará. The networking of the Candle, specifically Facebook, are still recents strategies used by the church to evangelize, digital media on calls originating web 2.0 and Cyberculture, in a society in the process of mediatization. In these new communication platforms, religion begins to change their ways of communicating. And the faithful? These are replaced and relevant central role in this new scenario. In this analysis, are discussed changes that begin to emerge in the discourse and practice of the Catholic Church provided by the insertion of the church in the digital world as well as the tensions encountered along this route between saying and doing the religious institution. Are perceived, yet, the differences found in the opinions of the priests themselves, regarding the use, purpose and other details regarding evangelization in the digital medium. As a case study, we analyze the speeches of Internet digital media in the Candle of Nazareth, seeing if there is a change in the mode of being and doing religion and a new way of being religious that is emerging in social networking Internet, with the increasing mediatization of society.

Obliterating Middle-Class Culpability: Sarah Grand's New Woman Short Fiction in George Bentleys Temple Bar

Clawson, Nicole Perry 01 March 2017 (has links)
Scholars interested in the popular Victorian periodical Temple Bar have primarily focused on the editorship of George Augustus Sala, under whom the journal paradoxically began delivering controversial content to conservative middle-class readers. But while the Temple Bar's sensation fiction and social realism have already been considered, critics have not yet examined Temple Bar's New Woman fiction, which was published during the last decade of the 19th century and George Bentley's reign as editor-in-chief. While functioning as editor-in-chief, Bentley sought to adhere to the dictates found in the 1860 prospectus, to "inculcate thoroughly English sentiment: respect for authority, attachment to the Church, and loyalty to the Queen." The Temple Bar seems an odd publication venue for the audacious New Woman writer Sarah Grand. And yet, Grand published several short stories in Temple Bar under the editorship of Bentley. Knowing Bentley's infamous editorial hatchet work, we might assume that he would cut from Grand's writing any unsavory bits of traditional New Woman content. Instead, a comparison of Grand's Temple Bar stories, "Kane, A Soldier Servant" and "Janey, A Humble Administrator," with their later unedited, republished versions (found in Grand's Our Manifold Nature) suggests that Bentley had a different editorial agenda. This analysis of Grand's fiction demonstrates that it was not New Woman subjects that Bentley found objectionable but the culpability her texts placed on the upper-middle class for their failure to act on behalf of the lower classes. Examining Bentley's removal of this material thus sheds new light on the dangers of New Woman literature as perceived by its Victorian audiences.

Dispan, Jérôme 10 1900 (has links) (PDF)
