461	Identidade, gênero e história: representações do feminino em A veinte años, Luz Parizote, Amanda Dal Zotto 20 August 2008 (has links) O presente trabalho trata da representação da identidade de gênero e de que forma pode-se lançar um novo olhar sobre a história da ditadura argentina a partir de personagens femininas, tendo por objeto de estudo o romance A veinte años, Luz, de Elsa Osório. Procura-se examinar de que modo as figuras femininas são representadas e se vão ao encontro de ou transgridem o discurso patriarcal instituído. Para tal, levantam-se, nesta pesquisa, questões como o papel desempenhado pelas mulheres na representação da história argentina, dando ênfase à atuação das Avós da Praça de Maio. Além disso, estabelece-se uma relação entre produção e crítica feministas na América Latina, de modo a esboçar vínculos que possibilitem o levantamento de índices de regionalidade. Para relacionar tais temas, foi realizada uma abordagem interdisciplinar, utilizando-se a Literatura e a Antropologia como principais bases teóricas. / This study deals with the gender identity representation and how a new version about the history of Argentina´s dictatorship can be derived from female characters. Its object of study is the novel A veinte años, Luz, by Elsa Osorio. Its aim is to identify how the female characters are represented and if they follow the patriarchal standard or go against it. For this purpose, this research broaches the role performed by women in the representation of Argentina´s history, emphasizing the action of Avós da Praça de Maio. Beside this, a relation between feminist production and criticism is established in order to outline bonds that enable the survey of indications of regionality. To relate such subjects, an interdisciplinary approach was made, placing Literature and Anthropology as part of the main theoretical supports. 462	Musical Ekphrasis in the Poetry of Nicolás Guillén, Federico García Lorca, and Langston Hughes Divett, Andrew Brennan 12 1900 (has links) Musical ekphrasis was occurring in the twentieth century in different centers around the world, Cuba: Andalusia, Spain; and Harlem, New York, simultaneously. The writers at the heart of this movement used poetry about music as a means to celebrate the cultures of the marginalized people in their lands, los negros, los gitanos, and African-Americans. The purpose of this study is to define musical ekphrasis and identify it in the works of Nicolás Guillén, Federico García Lorca, and Langston Hughes. Also explored are the common characteristics in ekphrastic poetry by the three poets and the common themes found in their ekphrastic poetry, as well as common influences. Each author is considered in the context of his surroundings and his respective culture, and how that influenced his musical tastes as well as his writing style. 463	A Survey to Highlight Areas of Focus for Patient Care in Settings Utilizing Medical Interpretation DeRegis, Azayzel 01 May 2022 (has links) This thesis recounts my personal experience working as a volunteer medical interpreter for the Language and Culture Resource Center at East Tennessee State University. The result of my time spent volunteering as a medical interpreter, shadowing professional medical interpreters, and witnessing patient-provider interactions during interpreted sessions was an inspiration to study medical interpretation further and delve into the challenges faced by patients who require medical interpreters. During my time researching this topic, I found that the United States is severely lacking in Spanish medical interpreters—with some healthcare facilities employing no medical interpreters—even though the size of the Hispanic population is on the rise. I also found that the language and cultural barriers to the Hispanic population receiving quality healthcare are a significant reason why the Hispanic population reports a lower satisfaction with U.S. healthcare. Through years of observation and practice, I developed research questions to help guide one in discovering what areas the Hispanic population is least satisfied with in healthcare. To discern what those areas of the greatest dissatisfaction are exactly, this research study manifests in the creation of a survey designed to improve the quality of healthcare received by the Hispanic population of Northeast Tennessee by identifying some of the principal issues faced by the Hispanic population within the U.S. healthcare system. 470	Translating Silence: Memory and Forgetting in Andrea Maturana's No decir Holmes, Aaron Mark 01 January 2012 (has links) (PDF) This thesis project is composed of two major parts: my English translation of No decir—a collection of short stories by Chilean author Andrea Maturana—titled Don’t Tell, and an academic introduction to that translation. The first chapter of the introduction gives biographical and cultural information about Andrea Maturana and her work, and it provides a summary of most of the criticism that has been written about her fiction. In the second chapter of the introduction I describe my translation goals and analyze challenges encountered while translating No decir. I first discuss the general problems of any translation project and then focus on several difficulties involved in Spanish to English translation. Finally I analyze a variety of specific challenges from my translation project, providing examples to both emphasize the partial nature of any translation and describe how I attempted to achieve my translation goals.
