The mournful cage: Max Weber as a hunger artistReddekop, Jarrad 17 January 2008 (has links)
Many accounts of Max Weber’s thought would seek to portray him as a theorist of responsibility or “re-enchantment” – as one who can confirm for us the appropriateness of a liberal position given the conditions of life as moderns, thus preserving the possibility of a renewed project of management at every turn. Such a reading may well be comforting today, insofar as it enables a reconciliation to the constellations of technological thinking within which we already find ourselves engaged. Over and against such accounts, this thesis attempts to elaborate an image of Weber as a hunger artist, as one who brings into emphasis a fundamental sense of loss attendant to “modernity”, and who broods upon that loss as the condition of a more faithful reflection upon the character of being. Not only does Weber offer insight into modern conditions of research and the theorization of politics; he is one who thinks such questions in their mournful profundity, gesturing towards what cannot be carried forward within their terms. In the melancholy of his thought, it is suggested, we glimpse the contours of a horizon from which we have still not emerged.

Previous issue date: 2010-03-10 / Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos / This work has the dialectics as its main theme and aims to present Max Weber s thought before the legacy of German idealism, i.e., by the particular way that Hegel (as much as Marxism) has defined dialectics in history. Dialectics will be investigated inside Max Weber s historical typologies as a product of history and reason together. We serve ourselves of two histories of philosophy, that of the Windelband and of Lukács, and from those two perspectives our object is approached by a philosophical as well as a historical and sociological perspective. Thus, we shall observe how the uses of Weber s types are immerged inside the same limits and philosophical legacy of Kant and Hegel.

This master's thesis is a study of my professional identity as an administrator at an art college, where I explore the scope for action for my experiences and my judgment as a government official. My purpose is to investigate what shapes and governs employees' roles and positions at an artistic university, both for those who work in business support and those who work in core business. How do they perceive their own and others' professional identity and mission? Are there factors other than occupational category that affect employees' judgment and action, and if so, what do they consist of? Are there social structures on a macro level, as well as within individual professional identities, that affect the individual's perception of loyalty and duty within his or her state assignment at an artistic university? What opportunities and scope for action does the individual employee have to add their own experiences and assessments? In my master's dissertation it appears that a discrepancy can arise between the assignment and one's own ideas about professional identity. These are factors that can be experienced as an unspoken power struggle, a field of tension, between the artistic core business and the administrative business support, above all. The theorists I refer to in the analysis are mainly Hannah Arendt and Pierre Bourdieu. In my analysis, I highlight the importance of providing space for the critical reflection in the individual employee's professional practice. “Traditional” charity versus “modern” development : philanthropy and communal boundaries in the Coptic Orthodox ChurchBarsoum, Kirollos A. 03 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Traditional Coptic charity, as I call it, is not just a flawed attempt at humanitarianism, as many believe. It is not just “giving a man a fish” as proponents of “human development” argue. Traditional Coptic charity, as I hope to explain, is an integral part of a larger social system that works together to maintain (and grow slowly) a religious community whose very salvation rests in the practice and transmission of its complex Liturgical body. By merit of its theological peculiarity, and the soteriological significance it gives the practice of sacraments and other religious activities, the Coptic Church effectively hems in the community in perpetuity. This contrasts with the other side of the philanthropic coin—development.
Development, which is championed by certain organizations stands as a bulwark of “modernity” in the face of charity’s traditionalism, does not fit into the soteriological orientation of the Church’s Liturgical life. In essence, development’s ultimate goal is to “develop” individuals to the point of “financial independence”—a goal that does not fit into the Church’s communal ethos or exclusively contribute to salvific ends. In recognizing these facts, I began to reevaluate my initial stance on human development as the best way of engaging non-Copts.
Overall, this thesis is can be read as a continuation of an ongoing debate between modernity and tradition—and the philanthropic tools they deploy—development and charity.

The Continuing Anglican Metamorphosis: Introducing The Adapted Integrated ModelL'Hommedieu, John 01 January 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to develop and test the Advanced Integrated Model, a typological model in the tradition of Weber’s interpretive sociology, as an asset in explaining recent transformations in American Episcopal-Anglican organizations. The study includes an assessment of the church-sect tradition in the sociology of religion and a summary overview of Weber’s interpretive sociology with special emphasis on the nature and construction of idealtypes and their use in analysis. To illustrate the effectiveness of the model a number of institutional rivalries confronting contemporary Episcopal-Anglican organizations are identified and shown to be explainable only from a sociological perspective and not simply as “in house” institutional problems. The present work sheds light on parent-child conflicts in religious organizations and reopens discussion about the theoretical value of ideal-types in general, and church-sect typologies in particular, when utilized from a comparative-historical perspective
