Meaningfulness of Work as Perceived by Women from Diverse Social Classes: A Grounded Theory ExplorationHutmire, Jennifer L. 01 January 2016 (has links)
Despite research connecting the meaningfulness of work with positive organizational outcomes, such as increased employee well-being, job satisfaction, engagement, and retention, there remains a lack of adequate, inclusive research explaining differences in women's perceptions of the meaningfulness of work. The purpose of this qualitative grounded theory study was to address this gap in the literature by developing a theory about the formation of perceptions of the meaningfulness of work and about the impact of those perceptions. Research questions explored perceptions that women from diverse social classes have of the meaningfulness of work, what influenced those perceptions, the impact of those perceptions on their career choices, and the influence of those perceptions on workplace experiences and behaviors. Data for this study were collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 25 women from different social classes. Transcribed interviews, results from a demographic screening survey, and researcher memos were analyzed using constant comparison in open, axial, and selective coding phases. Results indicated that perceptions of the meaningfulness of work are primarily defined by the potential impact of meaningful work and that the type, scope, and target of that impact are influenced by contextual and experiential factors, filtered through personal identity. The analogy of a stream was used to demonstrate the theory that blockages caused by negative workplace experiences and behaviors may prevent work from having a meaningful impact, but that channels can be created to bypass these blockages. Positive social change occurs when these channels allow employees' goals for impact to be realized, leading them to experience their work as meaningful and to engage in organizational citizenship behavior.

Spiritual Well-being, Job Meaningfulness, and Engagement for Human Resource ManagersStains, Dianne Marie 01 January 2018 (has links)
Employee engagement is a significant problem for leaders in most organizations today. Though many reasons are given for the growing number of disengaged employees, little is understood about what role spirituality in the workplace may play into employee engagement. Humanocracy theory guided the study on three aspects of workplace spirituality, employee engagement, and meaningfulness of work. An online survey combining elements of a Spiritual Well-being Scale, the Work and Meaning Inventory, and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale was administered to 325 human resource managers. Linear multiple regression results showed a strong negative correlation between spiritual well-being and job engagement, and no significant correlation between spiritual well-being and workplace meaningfulness, which contradicted findings in the literature. Results indicated the need for future research and to further refine a working definition of spirituality as it applies to the workplace and to identify or redefine traditional variables to better assess engagement and meaningfulness within a new workplace landscape. The findings may also be indicative of how the landscape of traditional workplace culture is shifting with the values and motivations of a workforce of newer generations. The findings of this study make apparent the urgency to rethink the definition of spirituality and its application to the workplace and employee engagement. The workplace today is often a barometer of societal norms and values. Understanding the need for new ways to view engagement, spirituality, and meaning has the potential to extend beyond the organization to the communities and society the organizations exist within and serve.

It's twice as fun as Swedish and all other subjects" : Pupils' attitudes toward mathematics teaching in relation to the curriculumBrandt Heedman, Ulrik, Leijon, Erika January 2011 (has links)
In the autumn of 2011 the Swedish Government decided to make an investment in mathematics in schools, due to declining student performance, as seen from an international perspective. The investment focused on, for example, more hours of instruction in class, and competence development for teachers. With this investment in mind, we have chosen to study the question of why pupil performance becomes worse, from the pupils' perspective. For example, do they find the teaching of mathematics meaningful? The study aims to explore the attitudes of pupils in fourth grade towards mathematics teaching and its relevance in their daily lives. Furthermore, the study aims to compare these attitudes with the mission expressed regarding the subject of mathematics and mathematics teaching in the curriculum. Because of the new curriculum, we have chosen to compare the aim of mathematics teaching with the pupils’ responses. The data collection was done through group interviews and the analysis was done using qualitative content analysis. To support our analysis we have used three concepts: perceptions, experience and meaningfulness. The result shows that pupils perceive mathematics as something very positive. They can also see meaningfulness in mathematics, but mostly as a knowledge that will be used in the future. The pupils get experience in mathematics through their own work in a book, or through work in pairs. The result also shows that pupils' perceptions highly correspond with the aims of the mathematics teaching in the curriculum. Finally, we discuss the result supported by our theoretical concepts. For example, we discuss why the pupils' positive view of mathematics changes during the time they go to school. We also discuss how students come to the conclusion that mathematics is important in the future.

Hur påverkas medarbetarskap av distansledarskap : En kvalitativ studie om distansledarskapets påverkan på medarbetarnas engagemang och meningsfullhet / How does remote leadership affect followership : A qualitative study on remote leadership's influence on employee commitment and meaningfulnessFransson, Elliot, Hagström, Oscar January 2018 (has links)
Background: Digitization has led to significant changes over the past few decades for communication in organizations. Digital communication resources mean that organizational members are no longer restricted by being physically present at the workplace. A key component of the success of organizations and work teams is the leadership that can now be implemented at a distance, called remote leadership. Remote leadership is characterized by theoretical negativity while countless Swedish managers conduct remote leadership. Nevertheless, followership show that the role of the manager is indispensable for the employees' commitment and meaningfulness, which is another component to consider in the relationship between the employee and the remote leader. Managers therefore need to enable commitment and meaning despite the obstacles that the distance causes. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to describe and analyze how the manager's remote leadership can promote employee involvement and meaningfulness? Method: Since the purpose of the study is to describe and analyze individual experiences, a qualitative survey methodology has been used. In relation to our theoretical reference framework eight semi-structured interviews have been conducted. The majority of the respondents hold a senior position but have their primary leadership stimulus at a distance. Conclusion: Commitment and meaningfulness among employees are particularly affected by the authorization and control of the manager. If the manager controls the employees and gives little authorization, commitment and meaningfulness are negatively affected. In order to further compensate for the obstacles caused by remote leadership, managers should get to know the employees, provide feedback, support and attention. The manager should, through physical interaction, get to know the employees to accelerate the thrust-inducing process between the employee and the manager. After initial physical interaction, the manager should distance themselves and therefore not physically attend the workplace, unless necessary, instead, the manager should be constantly available through digital media.

"En god dag ger en god natt" : En kvalitativ studie över värdet för äldre att delta i kommunstyrda träffpunkter / "A good day gives a good night" : A qualitative study over the value for elderly to participate in municipality-controlled meeting pointsNykyforuk, Vita, Odkil, Kenth January 2018 (has links)
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to create a deeper understanding of how meeting points can contribute to meaningfulness, good health and possess a preventive function of good ageing. Questions: In what ways does meeting coordinators believe that meeting points favors the well-being of elderly people, and do it satisfy their expectations? What function do the elderly who attend the meeting points feel that it fills in their lives and what do they find valuable with the participation? Theories: The sense of cohesion, the strength of weak ties, activity theory, continuity theory and the theoretical concept of loneliness. Method: The study used a qualitative method consisting of focus groups and semi structured interviews. Results and Analysis: Results and analysis were themed by the following themes: introduction to the meeting points, counteracting loneliness, meaningful existence and participation, the significance of a meeting coordinator, health-promoting activities and the importance of the meeting points for the elderly. The study showed it was largely elderly who experienced loneliness that visited the municipality-controlled meeting points. The results also indicate that meeting points are good places to counter loneliness and helps expand social networks and social ties. Results also showed that social ties to the meeting-coordinators are significant for the elderly to feel safe and, to a broader extent, participate in the meeting points. Elderly themselves felt that the most essential aspect of the meeting points were the prospect of social contacts and context. The study indicates that municipality-controlled meeting points contribute to meaningfulness in life and promote good health for the elderly through the social and physical activities offered there.

Previous issue date: 2015-07-16 / This study has as its central object of inquiry the construction of meaningfulness in Dilma Rousseff e José Serra’s electoral discourse from the 2010 political campaign for the nation presidency. Starting with the principles that mind determines the way of understanding reality providing imaginative thinking and that the meaningfulness has consequences for the experience we have proposed to investigate how electoral discourse conceptualization is oriented to the achievement of their persuasion goals and how it can influence an electoral campaign outcome. To elucidate our assumptions we have used data from the televised electoral publicity of each candidate conveyed by internet and recorded in cds for interpretative analysis. This development has been endorsed by the Cognitive Linguistics theoretical principles mainly those from Experiencialism taking in account the sociocognitive aspects of used language, the embodiment and imagination notions as well as by Turner and Fauconnier’s theory on mental spaces in discourse commonly accepted as a tool for analysis of discourse interpretations or as a cognition and conceptualization theory. According to the results the ability for conceptual integrations turns language into an advanced human activity, that is, a manifestation of the hidden cognitive construction highly abstract and imaginative; the underlying mental processes are the basis for the political-electoral discourse building the political discourse meaningfulness due to the persuasion therefore due to their consequences for the experience.

Existentiellt lidande i sen palliativ fas : En systematisk litteraturstudie utifrån vårdpersonals erfarenheterHjelm, Annelie, Svedling, Patrik January 2020 (has links)
Background: Existential suffering can afflict patients in late palliative phase, regardless whether they are cared for in a ward, receive home healthcare or in a specialized palliative care unite. This may mean that health professionals need to support the patients and provide relief in their existential suffering since meeting their existential needs is important in order for the patients to receive a good quality of life. Aim: To describe health professionals' experiences of caring for patients with existential suffering in late palliative phase. Method: A qualitative approach, through a literature study with a descriptive synthesis. Results: After the analysis two themes and six subthemes emerged. The theme Meaningful caring includes Getting the patients to open up through trustful relationships and Finding ways to support the patients. The theme Challenges in caring includes Finding a work-life balance, Identifying existential suffering, Managing difficult conversations and Being limited by external conditions. Conclusion: Nursing actions such as solely sharing the silence resulting in meaningful caring are often used but time restraints and the patients’ overall health conditions limits the possibilities to identify and ease their existential suffering. Additionally, health professionals' death anxiety and experienced knowledge gaps or beliefs that death conversations increase suffering limits the possibilities to ease existential suffering.

Medarbetarskap i kontexten av ofrivilligt distansarbete : En beskrivande kollektiv fallstudie med sju medarbetare / Co-workership in the context of involuntarily remote work : A descriptive collective case study with seven employeesCarlén, Fanny, Mörfelt, Melinda January 2022 (has links)
Background: Because of Covid-19, organizations had to switch from the traditional office setting to remote work. Previous research indicates that employees have had both positive and negative experiences of involuntarily remote work. However, there is a lack of research regarding the employee’s own responsibility, participation, and influence at work, more exactly the co-workership, in this context. Since co-workership is contextually bound, reaching such an understanding is critical. Purpose: To describe the co-workership in the context of involuntarily remote work from an employee perspective. Method: The study takes on an interpretative approach and consists of a deductive theory-approach, a qualitative research design, and a collective case study where the case consists of seven employees. Moreover, the study has its starting point in four central theories: the three cornerstones of co-workership, the co-workership wheel, the extended co-workership wheel, and the four levels of co-workership. Data has been collected through semi structured interviews. The results from the data collection have been analyzed with a deductive thematic analysis, where four main themes were produced: engagement and meaningfulness at work, social interactions and relationships, active responsibility-taking, and open and trustful dialogue. Conclusion: The result describes that co-workership in the context of involuntarily remote work is characterized by good fellowship, collaboration, and open dialogue. However, the result implies that more is required from the employees themselves to maintain this. Overall, there has been a strong sense of meaningfulness and a high level of engagement. The dedication toward the employer has been high but it has been periodically difficult to maintain this feeling because of the physical distancing. Finally, the co-workership can be described as a combination of the adaptable, specialized, and enterprising levels of co-workership.
