Big Five Personality Traits, Pathological Personality Traits, and Psychological Dysregulation: Predicting Aggression and Antisocial Behaviors in Detained Adolescents

Lau, Katherine S. L. 20 December 2013 (has links)
This study tested the utility of three different models of personality, namely the social and personality model, the pathological personality traits model, and the psychological dysregulation model, in predicting overt aggression, relational aggression, and delinquency in a sample of detained boys (ages 12 to 18; M age = 15.31; SD = 1.16). Results indicated that the three personality approaches demonstrated different unique associations with aggression and delinquency. The psychological dysregulation approach, composed of behavioral dysregulation, emotional dysregulation, and cognitive dysregulation, emerged as the overall best predictor of overt aggression, relational aggression, and delinquency. After controlling for the Big Five personality traits, psychological dysregulation accounted for significant variance in overt aggression and delinquency, but not relational aggression. After controlling for callous-unemotional traits and narcissistic traits, psychological dysregulation also accounted for significant variance in overt aggression, relational aggression, and delinquency. Psychological dysregulation did not account for significant variance in aggression or delinquency after controlling for borderline traits. The pathological personality traits approach, comprised of callous-unemotional traits, narcissistic traits, and borderline traits performed second best. In particular, within this approach borderline traits accounted for the most unique variance, followed by narcissistic traits, then callous-unemotional traits. Borderline traits accounted for significant variance in overt aggression, relational aggression, and delinquency when controlling for the Big Five traits, but not after controlling for psychological dysregulation. Narcissistic traits only accounted for significant variance in overt aggression and relational aggression after controlling for the Big Five personality traits, but not after controlling for psychological dysregulation. CU traits only accounted for significant variance in overt aggression after controlling for the Big Five personality traits, but not after controlling for psychological dysregulation. The social and personality model, represented by the Big Five personality traits accounted for the least amount of variance in the prediction of aggression and delinquency, on its own, and when pitted against the other two personality approaches. The exception was that the Big Five personality traits accounted for significant variance in relational aggression beyond narcissistic traits, as well as psychological dysregulation. These findings have implications for assessment and intervention with aggressive and antisocial youth.

A autopercepção de comportamentos relacionados à atenção plena em profissionais da saúde / The self-perception of mindfulness-related behaviors in health care workers

Souza, Mariah Theodoro de 31 May 2016 (has links)
The Mental Health Promotion interventions advance and non-drug activities gain ground. In this case, studies show meditation as an opportunity to cope with stress and the common mental disorders, as well as to obtain self-care. Mindfulness is referred in contemporary laic context as a present mental state in all individuals in greater or lesser degree which can be daily cultivated through meditative practices. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the self-perceived level of Mindfulness-related behaviors in health care professionals of a tertiary care hospital as well as to analyze the association of self-perceived mindfulness levels with certain indicators of living conditions and health. METHOD: A cross-sectional study is proposed with 97 health professionals who make up the University Hospital complex - FMUSP via Socio Demographic characterization, a study of the Philadelphia Mindfulness Scale (PMS) and a Questionnaire of General Health (General Health Questionnaire -12). All interviews were conducted between February and November/ 2014. RESULT: In PMS, the average score was higher for the component \"awareness\" (mean 29.9, SD 0.62) than for \"acceptance\" (mean 15.7, SD 0.86), with an average 45.6 and SD 1.1 for the Total Score (component \"awareness\" added to \"acceptance\"); There was a significant number of individuals (41%) with suspected common mental disorders (CMD), those with a score of three or higher in the GHQ-12. In a more detailed analysis (T-Test and ANOVA) it was observed strongly significant associations (p < 0.01) with higher levels of self-perceived mindfulness in the masculine gender, married / living together unmarried, greater job satisfaction, not in use of medicinal drugs, satisfactory sleep, frequent leisure and no presence of CMD. In the analysis of the GHQ-12 association with Mindfulness stratified by profession it was observed that the scores were lower for the group of the categories \"psychologist, social worker, physical education professional, biologist, physiotherapist, pharmacist and administrative professional\" with CMD; in the analysis of the GHQ-12 association with Mindfulness stratified by disease type the results showed that there are significant differences (p < 0.01) for the group of the categories \"more than one disease, either neurological or psychiatric\", of which the score \"Total\" and \"Acceptance\" were lower for those who had CMD. The presence of CMD (referred by the GHQ-12) is associated with lower scores of Mindfulness, indicating a possible negative correlation due to the domain of \"Acceptance\". CONCLUSION: The levels of self-perceived behaviors to mindfulness showed significant associations with a variety of indicators of living conditions and health among health care professionals. Suggesting, thus, the same direction of recent scientific evidences that mindfulness may be part of health protective factors also favoring self-care and quality of life

An Analysis and Critique of Mental Health Treatment in American State Prisons and Proposal for Improved Care

Hayne, Shelby 01 January 2019 (has links)
Mental health treatment in state prisons is revealed to be highly variable, under-funded, and systematically inadequate. Existing literature exposes this injustice but fails to provide a comprehensive proposal for reform. This paper attempts to fill that gap, outlining a cost-effective, evidence-based treatment proposal, directly addressing the deficits in care revealed through analysis of our current system. In addition, this paper provides historical overviews of the prison system and mental health treatment, utilizing theoretical perspectives to contextualize this proposal in the present state of affairs. Lastly, the evidence is provided to emphasize the potential economic and social benefits of improving mental health treatment in state prisons. Significant findings suggest a clear financial, legal, and moral incentive for states to address this issue, while the proposal provides a viable method of doing so.

AN EXAMINATION OF THE IMPACT TRAUMATIC EVENTS HAS ON PSYCHOSOCIAL IMPAIRMENT IN EATING DISORDER PATIENTS

Hackett, Jennifer Parker 01 June 2018 (has links)
Research suggests that trauma has an impact on eating disorders. While prior research has demonstrated that the trauma from abuse has a significant impact on eating disorders, research has failed to explore other types of trauma. In addition, previous studies have stopped short of examining the impact trauma has on functioning among individuals with an eating disorder. This study aimed to address that gap in the literature. The purpose of this study is to examine whether traumatic life events impact psychosocial functioning among individuals living with an eating disorder. Furthermore, this study aimed to identify which traumas are shown to have the strongest impact on psychosocial functioning. A quantitative design was used for this investigation, using measurement scales that have been shown to be valid and reliable in measuring the constructs of trauma and psychosocial functioning among individuals with an eating disorder. Participants completed a single survey of the combined measurement scales. A non-random purposive sample was collected from online social media cites Tumblr, Facebook, eating disorder message boards, and an outpatient eating disorder treatment center. Using a study sample of N= 2,319 descriptive and inferential statistics were conducted using SPSS. Based on the results of correlation and multiple regression analyses, a statistically significant relationship was found between traumatic life events and psychosocial impairment among those with eating disorders. The findings of this study have the potential to impact the way social work policies address the relationship between trauma and eating disorders, and influence the way social work clinicians implement strategies to treat both trauma and eating psychopathology.

Archambault, Kim 04 1900 (has links)
The objective of this thesis was to evaluate Espace de Transition (ET), an innovative art-based program aimed at fostering the rehabilitation of adolescents and young adults with recently stabilized psychiatric disorders and diminishing the stigmatization experienced by individuals with mental health problems. This program was designed by a team of clinicians from Ste-Justine Hospital’s psychiatry unit, in collaboration with professional artists. It is delivered since the spring of 2009. The evaluation of program ET was conducted in an independent yet collaborative manner, using a naturalistic approach and mixed methods. Data were collected before, during, and after the program from all participants who took part in two distinct sessions (N = 24), as well as from the two artist instructors, the psychoeducator who provided clinical support during the workshops, and the clinicians who referred participants (N=11). Individual and group semi-structured interviews, direct observations, and questionnaires served to collect the necessary data. Quantitative analyses of variance and qualitative thematic analyses were conducted and their results were interpreted in an integrated manner. The first empirical chapter of the thesis reports on the evaluation of the implementation of program ET. This evaluation showed that the program reached participants closely corresponding to its targeted population and that these youths globally presented elevated levels of assiduity, engagement in, and appreciation of the program. This evaluation also allowed to conclude that most essential program components were delivered as intended by designers and were largely appreciated and judged pertinent by participants and other respondents. The second empirical chapter presents an article detailing the evaluation of the effects of the program ET. This evaluation focused on three of its intermediate objectives: the improvement of 1) global functioning, 2) social comfort and competence, and 3) self-perception in program participants suffering from mental disorders. Results of this study revealed significant and positive changes in the global functioning of participants following the program, as assessed by their referring clinicians and partially corroborated by participants themselves. Improvements in social comfort and competence and self-perception were also noted in a substantial proportion of participants, although they did not translate in significant differences detected by group-level quantitative analyses. The third and last empirical chapter of the thesis reports on a study which sought to explore the mechanisms underlying the effects of program ET and to inductively elaborate a theory of action of the program. This qualitative investigation revealed four categories of mechanisms: 1) social experience and gratification, 2) desensitization by gradual exposure, 3) success and valorization, and 4) normalization. This study also allowed to identify program characteristics and components that seemed to favor the onset or impact of these mechanisms, such as the non-clinical setting and conducting of the program, the heterogeneous composition of the groups, the use of performing arts, and the pursuit of a collectively achieved artistic product and its presentation to an external public. Globally, the studies presented in the thesis support the relevance and promising character of program ET, while suggesting potential improvements for future versions. By extension, the thesis supports the potential efficacy of rehabilitation strategies which include components analogous to those of ET in fostering the recovery of youths with mental disorders.

An exploration on the criminal capacity of child offenders with psychiatric disorders

Geoffrey, Leandre Christina 28 November 2018 (has links)
The aim of this explorative study is to establish if psychiatric disorders influence the criminal capacity of child offenders. A qualitative approach was adopted in the study to develop an in-depth understanding of the issues pertaining to criminal capacity assessments for child offenders with psychiatric disorders. The risks associated with various psychiatric disorders in relation to childhood criminality, and the methods that are used to deal with child offenders who suffer from psychiatric disorders, were also explored. The data collection tool for this study was a semi-structured interview schedule. Telephonic and face-to-face interviews were conducted with child justice and mental health experts from four provinces in South Africa, namely, KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Eastern Cape and Western Cape. These experts included psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, academic professors of law, a criminologist and an advocate. Snowball sampling was employed and although this is a pure qualitative study, the open coding, axial coding and selective coding process from the grounded theory was applied to analyse and interpret the data. The findings from this study indicate that psychiatric disorders are a risk factor associated with the causation of criminal behaviour. A high prevalence of psychiatric disorders, such as intellectual disability, learning disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder, were generally found in children in conflict with the law. The influence and consequences of these psychiatric disorders, in conjunction with environmental and societal factors, were found to influence criminal behaviour and were highlighted as factors that ought to be taken into consideration when determining the criminal capacity of a child who is in conflict with the law. Findings from the study identified that adequate recognition was not granted to the influence of a psychiatric disorder in the assessment of a child‟s criminal capacity. It was established that, in the criminal capacity assessment, the emphasis should not be on the psychiatric disorder per se, but on the effect that the disorder and associated symptoms may have on the child‟s ability to distinguish between the wrongfulness of their actions and to act in accordance with this understanding. Operational challenges and ambiguities identified in the legislative framework pertaining to child offenders with psychiatric disorders were found to negatively influence criminal capacity assessments for children in conflict with the law. The lack of services available to child offenders with psychiatric disorders, as well as child offenders without psychiatric disorders, was found to hamper the best interest of the children in conflict with the law. Lastly, legislative and service recommendations for good practice to deal with child offenders with psychiatric disorder were identified by the experts. / Criminology and Security Science / M.A. (Criminology)

This institution is an NGO established in 1996 by the Comboni Missionaries and leaders of the Basic Ecclesial Communities, in Fortaleza-Ce. During this experiment in mental health, which comes from the popular movement, I met people who took part in the movement with a diagnosis of mental disorder, who are now caretakers. To understand this change in the social status of madness, I used the contributions from the community psychology, Gois and Montero, and the assumptions of the Brazilian Psychiatric Reform, Amarante and Rotelli. The methodology used was the perspective of hermeneutics in a critical case study of the Community Mental Health Movement in Bom Jardim. The field study took place from August 2009 to March 2010 and the application of the instruments occurred during June and July 2010. The participants were eight people who took part in the movement with a diagnosis of mental disorder, and now work as caretakers, as well as the president of the Community Mental Health Movement in Bom Jardim. The instruments used were focus groups, depth interviews and interviews mediated by the autodescriptions. After the production and transcription of data, an interpretive network was constructed. It concerned two issues: empowerment of people with mental illness and caretaking. The results indicate that the participation of people with mental disorders in a variety of caretaking activities favor the strengthening of the movement, leading to a change in beliefs about oneself and the world, experiencing the courage to do things differently, overcoming fatalistic attitudes that promote passivity, accommodation and disqualification. There is the rescue of personal worth and personal power, developing a sense of community ownership and ability to reflect and act upon reality. The Movement presents innovative features in mental health care when it starts a new social space for madness, through volunteering. The development of this activity decreases isolation, loneliness, alienation and anomie, promoting new areas of trade in the community. Another innovative feature in mental health care is recognized in the spiritual dimension of the movement as a link with the transcendent, in a freer experience of institutionalization, linked to the process of personal development, mediated by the deep involvement with the Other and to community development.
