A Multi-Element Psychological Management Program for Chronic Low Back Pain

Goldsmith, David A. 12 1900 (has links)
This investigation utilized a novel, self-help, multi-element psychological program to manage chronic low back pain. A literature review indicated that this disorder was costly and prevalent, yet a large percentage of chronic low back pain patients did not respond to traditional treatment. Recent research has demonstrated that numerous psychological difficulties have been associated with this disorder, including depression and anxiety. It was hypothesized that these psychological concomitants of chronic low back pain maintain and promote further pain, as part of a vicious cycle. Self-help treatment attempted to break this tension-pain-anxiety cycle using various stress reduction, and cognitive and behavioral management strategies.

In search of a revised model of health : exploring the relationship between meaning and health

Van Wyk, Hanlie 06 1900 (has links)
Research in Logotherapy substantiates the influence of meaning on psychological health and Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) corroborates the effects of psychological health on physical health. This dissertation explores the relationship between meaning and physical health hypothesising that purpose affects physical health. Methodology Exploratory factor analysis (EFA), ANOVAs and stepwise regression were used to explore three possible models. Results EFA revealed four factors, purpose, fear, vitality and aggression. Significant correlations were found between purpose, vitality (0.42) and work application (0.53). Despite the significant relationship between purpose and vitality, the lack of Chi-square is significant, suggesting that additional variables should be introduced into the model. Conclusion People reporting high levels of purpose together with low levels of fear and aggression, can be characterised by high vitality and an absence of medical conditions. Future research should focus on evaluating meaning centred interventions on immunity and vitality. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

Bodies, body politics, bodies politic : the making and movement of American bodies since 9/11

Purnell, Kandida Iris January 2016 (has links)
Bodies - be they fleshy or other - are simultaneously made by, made of, moved by, and the makers and movers of other bodies. Driven by the questions how do bodies emerge? what makes bodies move? and what can bodies do? bodies are placed at the very centre of this book in order to explain and show, not only how such bodily making and re-making - (re)making - and movement is done, but also why awareness and understanding of the processes and practices involved in the continual and ongoing (re)making and moving of bodies - of three particular kinds in particular (bodies of power/knowledge, humanised bodies, and bodies politic) - is vital to the study of international relations, conflict, and security and thus to the discipline of International Relations (IR). In short, bodies - of these three kinds in particular - require foregrounding because international relations, conflicts, and security practices are conducted by, on, and for bodies (humanised bodies and bodies politic in particular), according to bodies (namely referred to as dominant bodies of power/ knowledge, which become fleshed out as material bodies including humanised bodies and bodies politic and enact statecraft, further down the line). Moreover, as demonstrated in this book, which takes up the broad empirical case of post-9/11 American body politics and two case studies into the visual body politics of suffering and dead American soldiers since 9/11 and the 2013 Camp Delta hunger strike, there is much to be gained by taking the very particular embodiments of bodies into account, as every body is unique and it is according to distinctive bodily features, malaise/ailments, and feelings that bodies are moved to act (and in turn touch and move other bodies) and continually become other than they are.

In this thesis we investigated the problem of the relationship between mind and body in accordance to the point of view of John Searle. Having been established that the mind and body are two autonomous and opposed entities through the length philosophical history, an almost insurmountable abysm was created between them, in respect to a coherent explanation of the interactions maintained between them. We named this abysm “the problem of the relation between mind and body”, around which, has been formed a tradition of researchers interested in solving it. Nowadays this question translates into the possibility of knowing how mental states interact with neural cerebral states and, its origin, one still hasn’t come to a theoretical agreement on a definitive answer. John Searle presents as an answer a quite peculiar and at the same time polemical proposal, known as “Biological Naturalism”. Our objective consisted in the exposition of this theory observing its favorable and unfavorable points in confrontation to the theoretical context in which it is inserted. First, we redeemed the historical roots of the problem, in search of reasons which are considered a specific philosophical problem derived from Cartesian thoughts; second, we presented the theory of the biological naturalism properly said, emphasizing the way it relates to the traditional philosophy of the mind; finally, we discussed one of its main hypotheses: the theory of cause and effect, and the notion of emergency as a reply to the classic problem.

This research presents a systematical study about the use of improvisation as a tool for the collective creation in the performing arts, and the consequent systematization of an improvisation game called 'Improvisation Zone¿. As references of this research, we made use of two systems with clear possibility of dialogue and interlacement: the Effort-Shape System developed by Rudolf Von Laban, and the 'Vision Area¿ game, developed by Prof. Marcelo Ramos Lazzaratto. Starting from the 'intergame¿ between theses two systems and guided by the practical and theoretical studies of Viola Spolin, we systematized the 'Improvisation Zone¿, playing a key role in our creation of the play 'Alma de Papel¿. This research enquires the relationship of each interpreter with his own spontaneous and creative material, and how it interferes with his technique and poetic development and in the scenic construction. The development of this research was based on the experimentation of these concepts, applied on two propositions: the pedagogic process of systematization of these ideas ('Improvisation Zone¿) and the experimentation of the scenic construction / Mestrado / Mestre em Artes

A noção de alma na teoria do conhecimento de Pierre Gassendi / The notion of soul in Pierre Gassendi's theory of knowledge

To Pierre Gassendi (1592-1655) knowledge is only possible on empirical basis, however happens that he is an atomist. Thus, he develops a theory of knowledge that has as its core empiricism, that affirms that knowledge is obtained through the senses and atomism, which defends that things are composed of material particles that are not passible of observation when they are not in compounds. In such case, the aim of this work is to investigate Gassendi's theory of knowledge when it deals with the notion of soul. Just like the atoms the philosopher defends, the soul is also unobservable and even so both are treated from an atomist matter theory and an empiricist theory of knowledge point of view. Besides that, the notion of soul is a problematic subject in Gassendi's philosophy because its statute as material or immaterial is not properly elucidated by the philosopher and an appropriate interpretation of such notion can help to explain if there are or if there are not difficulties when one sees the soul as an object of knowledge. If the mind is supposed to be material, it would be just like the other objects of sensations and the data they transmit and if it is supposed to be immaterial it would not fit with the conception that everything that exists in the world are atoms and void / Doutorado / Filosofia / Doutor em Filosofia

Enhancing Spiritual Awareness Among Undergraduate Students: Improving Physiological Reactivity to and Recovery from Everyday Stressors

Anderson, Micheline R. January 2021 (has links)
Chronic stress contributes to a global burden of disease that include mental illness, cardiovascular disease and early mortality. One pathway linking stress responses to health outcomes involves cardiovascular response to psychological stress. Specifically, vagal response as indexed by heart rate variability (HRV) can be used to examine autonomic processes, dysfunction of which can predict cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The competitive academic climate on undergraduate campuses and insufficient time for recreation, rest and study, combined with inadequate coping skills can equate to consistent stressors that lead to subsequent stress and psychopathology among college students. Research demonstrates that reduced HRV can be observed among students during exam time, whereas increased HRV is observed in times of rest, suggesting that academic stress contributes to real-time physiological changes that, when prolonged, can be pathogenic in nature. Interventions aimed at influencing these processes via relaxation or other mind-body approaches have shown that enhancing meta-cognitive skills and other coping strategies have proven helpful in both improving perceived stress and psychological distress as well as improving HRV when compared with controls. This study investigates potential positive physiological effects of an eight-week Spiritual-Mind-Body (SMB) intervention, Awakened Awareness for Adolescents (AA-A), for undergraduate students. Specifically, we explore changes in HRV during resting, stress and recovery phases before and after the eight-week intervention. Additionally, we examine the association between change in self-report on measures of personal spirituality and psychological variables (pre-post AA-A), and changes across a host of HRV indices. Results include improvements in HRV recovery from stress and that a process of spiritual recovery is associated with these changes. SMB interventions that aim to improve spiritual and psychological functioning may promote psychophysiological resilience from stress.
