Chagas, Herika Christina Amador 06 March 2014 (has links)

___________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The research developed in the following pages aims to highlight the work done daily by a group of women who are outsourced workers occupied with cleaning and maintenance in a federal government agency. Both with regard to the commonly called productive dimension, as in the domestic sphere, they perform silent and invisible work of social reproduction and care. The ethnographic incursion occurred intermittently between 2012 and 2013, mostly with six women workers. To understand the multiple work-related journeys of interlocutors, I analyze the expansion of the neoliberal system in Brazil from late 1980‟s – extending to the following decades – and give reasons that make this form of governance affect the types of employment in the country, with emphasis on outsourcing services. I also deal with the sexual division of labor, understanding this form of social division of labor as hierarchical and dividing of men and women in the dimension of labor in the productive and reproductive spheres. Allied to these debates is the importance of time in the narratives of workers and the way they deal every day with the time compression which turns wage labor into a marker of useful time, and relegates all other kinds of time necessary to social well being to a secondary position. Topics such as health and illness, and also the gossip in the workplace appeared to be relevant in everyday work and therefore also gained ground in the dissertation, demonstrating that there was bargaining power and also generation conflicts in the work environment. The analysis also allows me to further discuss the complex relationship existing between outsourcing and precarization of labor relations.

_______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / Motivated by the metamorphoses of the world of work and its crisis and by the participation of women in this context, this thesis aims to reflect on the social role of unified enterprising women. Our main focus was the study of the contemporary condition of working women, in such a way as to understand the following central question: What is the role of women in the process of generating alternatives to the actual labor crisis and how, at the same time, such initiatives constitute fields for the generation of economic and social bonds? Starting from the study of the productive and reproductive work, organized and maintained by women who have come from a trajectory of poverty and/or social exclusion, we empirically analyze the production of contemporary social bonds, in a context of a unified popular economy. The Apoena group of artisans (Vila Estrutural – DF) and the Cooperativa 100 Dimensão (Riacho Fundo II – DF) were the subjects of the research. The study of the social role of women in the world of labor passes through the recognition that their entry and permanence in the market implies an articulation between extra-domestic work and domestic work (taking care of the house, the family, the children, etc.). Thus, the working women put in the center of this thesis are those whose routine is structured in varied actions: family survival x recognition x personal care, etc. In a general way, we demonstrate that between the house and the street, there is a constantly increasing number of women seeking to rewrite their trajectory of socialization in a way not to succumb to social exclusion and invisibility. In agreement to the presupposition that work is not only a generator of merchandises, but above all, of sociabilities and identities positively recognized by the social groupings, we show the existence of a contemporary type of workers: the unified enterprising women. Finally, we highlight the existence of a unified popular economy that favors the recognition of the work of women, especially those that live in a situation of vulnerability, but undertake their work force in the social production and reproduction.

January 2000 (has links)
Abstract: The present study investigate the problematic that involves the understanding social representation of women who had dedicated ten years of their lives to the home and returned to the work market. The adopted methodology is the qualitative research and the used technique was the life history, in wich three womem had been submitted to interviews for the composition of their histories, being these recorded and later transcribing and analyzed. The results show that the woman organizes her social representations, based in a complex system of interpretations, that the present living environment wich the representations of return to the work are transparent and based in conceptions of the public world, as the world of the work; and the private world, as the domestic servant, to the home and the family. These two conceptions interlace and appear, respectively, in histories of life of the interviewed and have correlation with the current transition Brazil is passing, from industrial to postindustrial society. / Mestre

The state of the art on the differential of income between men and women in the national scope presents several studies that show a wage gap favorable to the masculine gender. In such studies, it is still evident that this differential occurs in a context of discrimination against women. However, there were no studies that approaches this theme from a sectoral perspective, taking into account the specific characteristics of each sector of activity. In this way, the present study aimed to analyze the differential of the income obtained by men and women in the years of 2005 and 2015, highlighting the peculiarities inherent to the large economic activity sectors (primary, secondary and tertiary). This analysis had as its theoretical foundation the theory of human capital, which advocates the set of productive attributes of the individual, such as education and experience, as determinants of his salary. For that, two methodological procedures were used: the Heckman Sampling Selection Model to determine the participation of employed individuals with positive income in the sample, and the Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition to determine if this income differential is a result of differences in productive attributes of the individuals or if it is caused by any discriminatory factor. The results showed that men receive higher incomes than women in all three activity sectors, and in all of them discrimination against women is observed. The secondary sector appears with the worse scenario, because in the three years analyzed the women presented better productive attributes and still received lower income. There is a tendency to reduce the wage gap in this sector, as well as in the tertiary sector, while it is not possible to affirm the same in relation to the primary sector.

This thesis analyzes the social and symbolic aspects of women's work in a community laundry in Muriaé/MG. Questioning the work of washerwomen, we investigated the nuances and meanings that it takes women's work, sticking to gender-buildings marked by the sexual division of labor. Discussing work in the laundry as a class marker, stood out the temporality involved in the coordination of activities carried out within and outside home, revealing the strategies that women resort to combine productive and reproductive work in their everyday work and family. The data from the qualitative research, which appealed to the participant observation and semi-structured interviews, allowed to characterize socially the subjects, focusing on aspects linked to the type of work performed, the trajectory of women and their ways of life, craft learning washerwoman, the meanings of work, in addition to the strategies and social networks that allowed to combine domestic work and paid work. Data were analyzed from the descriptive analysis. The results indicated that the determining factors in choosing the work in the laundry were: reduced workload, proximity to residences and no requirement for education. Despite the work in the laundry be understood as something important in the lives of these women, the research pointed to a dissatisfaction about the working environment, due to the current conflicts in the group, in addition to fatigue due to double or triple workday. Even exercising paid work outside home, the family domestic work remains assignment of women, seen as inherent to the female universe. About the prospects to the future, some of them aim to achieve better work opportunities, but they face some limitations like illiteracy or low educational level. Given this reality, they project to their children and grandchildren a better future than they have had.

In this dissertation two studies were carried out following the Model of Stereotype Content. Similar to the Cuddy, Fiske, and Glick (2004) design, the first study tested whether the perceptions of competence and warmth of men and women, with and without children, influence their employability, with the contribution of comparing between generations of respondents. A total of 135 participants were separated into two generations: 71 university students (49.3% female) aged 18 to 30 years and 64 people (46.9% female) attending university aged 45 and over 75 years old. The questionnaires contained a description of one of the 4 scenarios that varied in relation to paternity and maternity. All scenarios were evaluated more as competent than warmth (mothers more than the other groups), but there was no reduction in competence and employability within the scenarios. The two positive dimensions of stereotype predict employability. In Study 2 two Brief Implicit Association Test – BIATs were constructed on female subtypes, one of competence and another of warmth. To test the convergent validity with an implicit measure of attitudes the Gender/career Implicit Association Test – IAT was used for convergent validity with a self-report measure and the predictive validity was tested using the Ambivalent Sexism Inventory. Data collection was carried out in person at the University's computers and a pilot study was carried out for the mapping of female subtypes. The responses of 80 women and 69 men with mean age of 20.73 years were analyzed. The predictive and convergent validity of the BIATs were not confirmed, restricting the conclusions. The results of studies 1 and 2 of this dissertation point out to a general positive evaluation of female groups and problems of social desirability are discussed.

The present study investigate the problematic that involves the understanding social representation of women who had dedicated ten years of their lives to the home and returned to the work market. A análise da problemática permite-nos perceber como a empresa pesquisada assegura a sua sobrevivência no competitivo mercado globalizado, por meio de maior produtividade com menores custos, o que, em larga medida, é possibilitado pela divisão sexual e exploração do trabalho, não raro, veladas pela naturalização do social e por laços paternalistas de cooperação e parceria / Abstract: This study focus on the impacts of the productive re-structure on the sexual division of work in the shoe industry of Franca, in the province of the state of São Paulo. It is based upon the analytic categories of social classes and social relationships of sex and it holds the hypothesis that contemporary capitalism to ensure the accumulation process uses the productive re-structure and a variety of devices, among other things, specific means of exploitation and controlling, like the one settled between sexes that performs their productive capability and answers for the continuity of such system. Then the study tries to unmask its effects on the social relationships of sex in an empirical aspect; inquires, by means of studying a case, its incidence in an industrial unity, showing the effects on its female workers. The research also describes the strategies used by the female workers to adjust industrial and domestic chores as well as taking part in public activities. It still examines the entanglements of daily life, interpretations and subjectivity of the female shoe worker. The analysis of the question made it possible to realize how the researched industry guarantees its own survival in the global competitive market, by higher productivity with low cost which is, in large scale, allowed by sexual division and work exploitation, not rarely, masked by the social re-occurrence and by paternal controlling ties of cooperation and partnership / Doutora.

________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This was a qualitative research. The general objective of the study was to understand the meanings of being women and its implications for the mental health condition of female workers of the Manaus Free Trade Zone MFTZ. Ages varied from 18 to 50 years old. They were all workers of the MFTZ 6 worked in the assembley lines; 6 in the administrative sector and 2 held executive positions. Four data collection strategies were used: focal groups, semi-structured interviews, a socio-economic questionnaire and Goldbergs General Health Questionnaire GHQ. The data collected in the focal groups and interviews were submitted to a thematic content analysis. The GHQ was scored according with the manual. Several factors were identified by the participants as potential stressors: 1. In the family area: strict educational rules and strong demands to perform houselhold shores at an early age, made family life difficult; little to no partners participation in household shores and child care; multiple labor journeys; lack of leisure time. 2. In the work area: lower wages and less access to promotions when compared to male workers; long labor hours and the pressure to work double shifts which generate dilemmas and guilt as they keep them away from the family and loved ones; 3. In relation to perceptions of the body and sexuality: personnal appearance is seen as an important factor to be hired such demand together with rigid aesthetic patterns present in contemporary society add stress for women workers and may provoke distortions in their self-image and generate feelings of self-devaluation; many prejudices surround women that work at the MFTZ and reverberate in the form of sexual and moral harassment; 4. In the mental health area: several risk factors were identified and GHQ scores showed the presence of mental health problems of a non-psychotic nature for all participants. The assembley line workers had scores that indicated the presence of greater vulnerability. Further research with a larger number of assembley workers are needed in order to provide a better understanding of such vulnerability. This research aimed to give visibility to the feminine conditions in the Amazon region, specially those pertaining to a group of women workes at the MFTZ. The voices of the participants revealed several benefits, dilemmas and challenges which point to the complexity of their livesexperiences and of being women. We hope that this research will serve as an incentive for future studies regarding the interaction between gender-work-family and its impacts on the mental health of women from the Amazonas.
