"Trap for the Reader" as a Narrative Strategy and Chances for Its Didactic Use

Kaleta, Juda January 2020 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the concept of the trap for the reader, which is defined using the methodology of the cognitive science cognitive literary studies as an input of such structures and concepts in the text by which specific scheme is activated in the mind of the reader to be replaced by the different incompatible scheme. Based on this replacement, the comprehension of the text is reconstructed. Afterward, we describe specific types of trap for the reader. Every type of the trap is defined by replaced schemes: characters are prototypically an- thropomorphic, characters are black-and-white, characters are archetypes, the narrator speaks the truth, the genre is not changed. Excerpts of literary works are used to represent each type of trap. In the other part of the thesis, we demonstrate usage of this concept in the literature lessons at upper elementary and high schools. Both well-known pieces of the Czech literature, as well as contemporary young adult literature, are used as examples for the didactic use of this concept. Keywords cognitivism, cognitive literary studies, young adult literature, cognitive bias, critical thinking, functional literacy 5

A Survey of Pre-School Teachers´perceptions and experiences of Language Acquisition through Digital and Analogue Reading

Dahlin, Linda, Glad, Rebecca January 2022 (has links)

Northern Sotho historical dramas : a historical-biographical analysis

Bopape, M. L. (Malekutu Levy) 06 1900 (has links)
The main aim of the study is to make a historical-biographical analysis of four selected Northern Sotho dramatic texts. Chapter one illustrates that the texts we have selected are historical dramas since they deal with the life histories of historical characters. In order to comprehend these texts, it is important to view them as evidence of oral history. The chapter also discusses the approach used by Fleischman which consists of the following parameters: authenticity, intention, reception, social function, narrative syntax and finally narrator involvement. Chapter two discusses the play Marangrang as a reflection of the consequences of Shaka's imperialism and how this affected the Eastern Transvaal in 1820. The chapter illustrates that in order to understand the life history of Marangrang, it is important to discuss it in relation to this period, popularly known as difaqane. It is clear that information about Marangrang has been deliberately distorted because of fear. Chapter three deals with the destructive consequences of Western religion on the traditional African religion. The chapter is based on the life history of Kgasane, who was murdered in 1884, allegedly for his devotion to Christianity. The chapter shows the importance of the need to make a re-interpretation of missionary writings, specifically those surrounding the Berlin Mission Society in South Africa. Chapter four focuses on the role of formal education in the destruction of the Bakgaga ba GaMphahlele history. The chapter is based on the life history of Kgosi Mmutle Ill in bringing formal education to the people of Mphahlele and how this destroyed certain traditional institutions such as chieftainship. Chapter five deals with the problems experienced by mineworkers and also shows the sufferings of Africans at the hands of the government. The chapter is based on the life of Serogole Mathobela, who once worked in the mine. Chapter six is a conclusion where the findings of the previous chapters are made. The reasons why the authors of these texts suspended certain information while highlighting other information varies from fear to propaganda. In conclusion, it is observed that in order to do justice to oral history more financial support is needed. / African Languages / D.Litt. et Phil. (African Languages)

Carzello, Christopher 08 1900 (has links)
Six short stories, which can be grouped into one long story, provide different styles for the narrator: a third-person narrative, an ‘’I’’ narrative, a ‘’we’’ narrative, and a ‘’you’’ narrative. This particular text is a reflection about the act of creating as a progressive construction as well as a reflection on the effects of narration. As a concrete proof, the last part is identical to the first one, but having the whole story in mind gives the same text a different meaning. The fantastic mood emerges with the reader’s hesitation of how to interpret the facts that are presented to him. Globally, this text plays with the instances that provide a literary text and the ones that receive it. The narrative in a fantastic text is very important, and has to create tension in the reader, who will not be able to explain certain aspects of the story. Often, the plot is told in the first person, hence merging the narrator with a character, thus creating a double personality. We try to shine the light on the role of the narrator in a fantastic text by analyzing how the plot unravels and which narrative methods are used in three short stories: La Vénus d’Ille (Mérimée), Apparition (Maupassant), and Ligeia (Poe).

A narrator in the edge: the pathway of beckettian first person narrator from the \"nouvelles\" to the \"textes pour rien\"

Gonçalves, Lívia Bueloni 17 April 2009 (has links)
This dissertation studies the narrator in Samuel Beckett s prose, particularly focusing on a critical phase in the authors literary production covering the years of 1945 to 1950. The chosen period begins with the novellas Premier Amour (1970), Lexpulsé, Le calmant and La fin (1955) Becketts first narratives written in French and closes with the work Textes pour rien (1955). The importance of this phase lies in the creation and development of Becketts characteristic first person narrator, whose unstable discourse is fraught with impasses, questioning the very story being narrated. The dissertation follows this narrators journey to discuss the key role it played in breaking with formal realism patterns of the twentieth centurys narrative.

Oliveira, Ana Luisa Patrício Campos de 12 February 2009 (has links)
The present study intends, primarily, to show that Camilo Castelo Brancos fictional production consists in a Romanesque legacy that passes much beyond the mere transmission of love stories. Thus, some important aspects and themes of the writer of São Miguel de Seides literature are taken as pillars of this analysis, such as the presence of a Portugal immersed in capitalist relations, typical of the 19th century, a proper ambience to the financial interest and the desire of mimetic basis, but barren to unselfish affections, and the camilian narrators remarkable performance, an instance that not abstains from unveiling, every time, the vile engines that, according to his opinion, stimulate as much the gear of this materialist Portuguese society as the characters attitudes inserted in it. Finally, it is pertinent to emphasize that the selected corpus for this camilian works appreciation is composed by the novels Onde está a Felicidade? and Um Homem de Brios, both from 1856.

A questão do narrador realista-naturalista e a alegoria histórica: Adolfo Caminha, Aluisio Azevedo (o coruja) e Graciliano Ramos (Caetés, Angústia e Vidas Secas) / The question from narrator\'s realist-naturalist and historical allegory: Adolfo Caminha, Aluisio Azevedo (O Coruja) e Graciliano Ramos (Caetés, Angústia, Vidas secas).

Juarez Filho, Edmundo 06 May 2011 (has links)
This work aims to discuss the issue of historical allegory in the novel of Brazilian naturalism (Adolfo Caminha and Aluisio Azevedo) and in three novels (Caetés, Angústia, Vidas secas) of Graciliano Ramos. Assuming that the historical allegory can only be performed from a person narrator, or of a narrator who, through his narrative, build its history to defend their political views, I tried to prove that in the tension between what is said by the narrator and the contradictions of this discourse interested in the novel made by the author of the novel, it is possible to discern an authorial position, giving the report for that hibridismo, the role of discussion and adoption of a position of political events and socio-historical process. The literary work here would have the task of discussing the exact timing of events, the political situation, even if other factors literary should be taken into account in their reading.
