Knowing More Than the Hero: An Exploration of Nathan Gabriel's 2011 Production of A View from the Bridge

Gabriel, Nathan Edward January 2011 (has links)
In 2011 Nathan Gabriel directed Arthur Miller's A View From The Bridge for his graduate thesis production at Temple University in Philadelphia. In this essay, Gabriel posits that keeping the character of Eddie ignorant about his true feelings for Catherine until the final moments of the play is crucial to making the play work. He supports his argument by pointing to the changes Miller made in the script between the one-act and two-act versions. Gabriel demonstrates how the play followed Aristotle's ideal for a classic Greek tragedy and compares this ideal with Miller's conviction that a true tragedy should not only be sad but should also teach its audience how to better live their lives. He also defends his choice to keep the true sexuality of Rodolpho ambiguous and examines the creative journey of his designers. / Theater

Aldo Rossi : trajectoire d'un architecte enseignant dans l'Italie des années 1960 : pour une approche dialectique et épistémologique de la théorie du projet / Aldo Rossi : trajectory of an architect in ltaly of the 1960s : for a doalectical and epistemological approach of the Factory of the project

Chatot, Tristan 24 September 2014 (has links)
The dialectical spirit which characterizes Aldo Rossi's intellectual disposition as a teacher and architect practitioner, crystallized during the 1960s, in Italy, a new approach to the teaching of the theory of the project in architecture. Trying to be rational while integrating the question of " the subjective element " of the architect, through his experience, the intellectual posture of Rossi was positioned in response to a political and university crisis. In the continuity of the researches led by the epistemology and the pedagogy of architecture and on his reflexive openness to other disciplinary fields, Rossi tries to build a theoretical essay to the Fabric of the project (Città analoga). He questions the analogical thought in front of the typological studies and tries to sketch a didactic method step by step. Facing the difficulty of rationalising " the subjective element ", Rossi, extends his essay on the Factory of the project, through his own works.

En religionspsykologisk studie av poeten och mystikern Gunnar Ekelöf : Om poeten som mystiker och poesi som mystikens språk

Wahlström, Emil January 2017 (has links)
With this essay, I mean to investigate if the poetry of the Swedish poet, writer and cultural elitist Gunnar Ekelöf shows signs and meanings of a mystical character. First, I research and compare the theories of Nathan Söderblom, Hjalmar Sundén and Antoon Geels about mysticism and use these in my interpretation of Ekelöfs poetry. It soon becomes clear that Ekelöf is a person with an inner religious reality and in context with the definition of mysticism this essay presents and uses, it goes to show that his poetry can be seen as mystical and furthermore that Ekelöf himself can be considered a mystic. This essay, leads to a discussion about a wider interpretation of mysticism and that mysticism can be seen in poetry.

Leopold and Loeb : texts and contexts of an American cause célèbre

Potter, Holly January 1991 (has links)
This thesis situates the famous Leopold and Loeb case within the context of social discourse about the criminal. I will argue that this case played an important role in mediating social attitudes towards criminality at two moments in American history: first, in the 1920s, when defense attorney Clarence Darrow used the Leopold and Loeb trial to challenge traditional assumptions about innate criminality and the existence of a criminal type; and later, in the post World War Two epoch, when concern with various forms of "deviant" behaviour intensified. This analysis of one particular criminal case and its manifold repercussions might also prove useful for opening similar inquiries into other causes celebres.

Identifying Potential Applications for Lamina Emergent Mechanisms and Evaluating Their Suitability for Credit-Card-Sized Products

Albrechtsen, Nathan Bryce 09 December 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Lamina emergent mechanisms (LEMs) are a maturing technology that is prepared for commercial implementation into new products. LEMs are defined by three functional characteristics; they (1) are compliant, (2) are fabricated from planar materials, and (3) emerge from a flat initial state. Advantages, design challenges, and design tools are described for each of the functional characteristics. Opportunities for LEMs are discussed, namely disposable LEMs, novel arrays of LEMs, scaled LEMs, LEMs with surprising motion, shock absorbing LEMs, and deployable LEMs. Technology push product development processes were employed to select applications for LEMs. LEM technology was characterized. In a LEM workshop, eighteen industry professionals then helped identify over 200 potential applications for the technology. The applications were evaluated, and the most promising ideas that were identified for each LEM opportunity are described with graphics of possible product embodiments. Of the various product opportunities enabled by LEMs, deployable mechanisms – particularly in the credit card size – are among the most viable. The compactness and portability of credit-card-sized products create a strong motivation for their development. Expanding the capabilities of credit-card-sized mechanisms to include more sophisticated motions and a broader range of tasks may dramatically increase their market potential. A review of the current state-of-the-art in credit-card-sized mechanisms reveals two primary classes of mechanisms most commonly used in this form factor: rigid-body mechanisms and in-plane compliant mechanisms. The limitations of each and corresponding LEM advantages are described. Criteria for determining whether a product is a suitable candidate for using LEM technology to create or improve a credit-card-sized product are established. The advantages of LEMs in credit-card-sized products are illustrated through an example product: a compact lancing device that could be used as a main component for a highly portable epinephrine syringe.

Effectiveness of Compacted Fill and Rammed Aggregate Piers for Increasing Lateral Resistance of Pile Foundations

Lemme, Nathan A. 09 November 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Compacted fill and rammed aggregate piers (RAPs) were separately installed adjacent to a 9-ft by 9-ft by 2.5-ft driven pile foundation founded in soft clay. The compacted fill used to laterally reinforce an area of 11 ft by 5 ft by 6 ft deep adjacent to the pile cap was clean concrete sand. The thirty-inch diameter RAPs were installed in three staggered rows to a depth of 12.5 ft below the ground surface adjacent to the pile cap to test the increase in lateral resistance afforded by their installation. The foundation was laterally loaded and load, displacement, and strain readings were recorded. The results of this testing were compared with similar tests performed with virgin soil conditions. The total lateral capacity of the pile foundation increased by 5 percent or14 kips due to compacted fill placement against the face of the pile cap. The passive force acting only on the pile cap decreased from 54 kips in the virgin case to 30 kips after installation of the compacted fill, a decrease of about 45 percent. The total lateral capacity of the pile foundation that was retrofit with RAPs was increased by 18 percent or 52 kips as compared to an identical pile cap in virgin clay. The passive force acting on the pile cap at 1.5 inches of pile cap displacement was determined to be approximately 50 kips, showing a slight decrease in passive resistance as compared to the tests performed on virgin soil. Both reinforcement techniques reduced pile head rotation and the bending moments in the shallow portions of the piles.

Formování izraelské národní identity v básnické tvorbě Natana Altermana / Formation of Israeli National Identity in poems of Natan Alterman

Tintěrová, Monika January 2019 (has links)
The presented diploma thesis named "Formation of Israeli National Identity in Poems of Nathan Alterman" aims to present its reader from an interdisciplinary perspective of scientific discipline of Anthropology of Literature, way by which was the poetic text used in the process of forming of the Israeli National Identity. That is demonstrated on the chosen case study of two poems of Nathan Alterman (1910-1970): Silver Plate and About This. Alterman, one of the most known poets of Israeli War of Independence, published these poems in his regular newspaper platform Seventh Column in leading left oriented journal Davar. First of the poems was written still in the pre-state period in the year 1947 and expressed a severe critics to a Zionistic perception of the expected war which was about to burst out with the upcoming end of the British Mandate on Palestine and division of the territory into an Arabic and Jewish state. Second poem was published almost exactly a year after the first one and criticizes war behaviour of the Israeli army to local Arab inhabitants. Both these poems foreshadowed Alterman's way of his relation to the ruling establishment and not only him but of all his generation of authors, which with their literary texts expressed criticism towards the state apparatus, but legitimized it at...

Nathan Söderblom : hans utveckling till ekumenisk ledare

Potechkin, Natalja January 2005 (has links)
