In this thesis, I analyze various aspects of migration from Ukraine to the Czech Republic under the resettlement program of ethnic Czechs introduced by the Czech government in 2015. This program was initiated upon the request of the Czech society in Ukraine in response to steady economic decline and worsening living conditions in Ukraine. The population of my study is ethnic Czechs living in Ukraine and who moved to the Czech Republic within the resettlement program. I study the determinants of their move, speed of integration in the Czech Republic, progress on the Czech labor market, migrants' satisfaction with life in the destination country, discrimination and their plans for the future. I collect qualitative data from individual interviews mostly conducted in hotel rooms where the migrants temporarily reside. ​El presente artículo de investigación busca reconocer la problemática actual de la falta de identidad nacional en jóvenes de educación secundaria de zonas específicas de Lima a causa de la falta de una apropiada educación en los centros educativos, así como la falta de integración social en la escuela. El objetivo de la investigación realizada consiste en contribuir a la formación de la identidad nacional en los jóvenes mediante el uso del diseño gráfico, por medio de la historia del Perú y la historieta. Brindando una alternativa que capte la atención e interese a los alumnos. Se ha optado por la metodología de investigación experimental, ya que se realizará un estudio con variables experimentales en un entorno fijo. El nivel de investigación es el experimental y el enfoque elegido es el mixto pues se realizarán métodos cuantitativos como cualitativos. De esta Manera se plantea como posible solución el uso de la historieta como un medio generador y proveedor de identidad nacional en las escuelas secundarias. Una solución que se plantea en base a los resultados que se han obtenido durante la investigación del problema y sus orígenes. En Conclusión, la respuesta de los jóvenes a la propuesta fue positiva y los resultados de los test realizados resultó en un 60% de acierto por lo que se puede validar la hipótesis planteada. / The present research article seeks to recognize the current problem of the lack of national identity in young people in the education of the specific areas of Lima, cause of the lack of an adequate education in the educational centers, as well as the lack of social integration in the school. The objective of the research is to contribute to the formation of national identity in young people through the use of graphic design, through the history of Peru and the comic strip. Providing an alternative that captures the attention and interests of students. The chosen methodology has been the experimental research, a study has been developed with experimental variables in a fixed environment. The level of research is experimental, and the chosen approach is mixing to perform quantitative and qualitative methods. In this way, the possible use of the comic strip as a generator and provider of national identity in high schools is presented as a possible solution. A solution that is based on the results obtained during the investigation of the problem and its origins. As Conclusion, the response of the young people to the proposal was positive and the results of the tests were 60% correct, so the hypothesis could be validated.​ / Trabajo de investigación

Strategic Narratives During Armed Conflict : The Case of Ukraine Post-2022 Russian Invasion

This thesis contributes to the digital and narrative turn in International Relations, supplying a response to the inquiry ‘Which strategic narratives have emerged in Ukraine’s digital diplomacy following the February 2022 Russian invasion?’ The paper observed how the field of politics is revitalised by the interplay between political communication during times of incertitude, digital diplomacy and the trend of personalisation. The thesis evaluated different approaches taken by prior theorists of these spheres and leveraged their knowledge in order to respond to the research question. The treatise employed a qualitative content analysis upon 12 presidential speeches, 4 parliament addresses and 10 social media posts. This content was published by Ukrainian elite political figures during the initial phase of the war, between February 24th and March 29th, 2022. This methodology generated three national identity archetypes (NIAs): the ‘hero’, the ‘partner’ and the ‘victim’. The treatise further conceived Ukrainian’s strategic narratives mechanism composed of distinct values, objectives, demands, target recipients, channels and ensuing initiatives, adjacent to these three NIAs, pillars of Kyiv’s political communication. The paper concludes with future directions for strategic narrative research deriving from the experiences of the Russo-Ukrainian conflict.

"Suffering in the Common Cause": The Continental Association and the Transformation of American Subjects to Citizens during the Coercive Acts Crisis, 1774-1776

This dissertation explores the point and process by which American colonists transformed from subjects to citizens. Upon learning of Boston radicals’ destruction of East India tea, Parliament passed the Coercive Acts, a collection of punitive measures designed to rein in that seaport town. In response, American communities from Massachusetts to Georgia drafted resistance resolutions calling on colonists to refrain from importing British merchandise, exporting American resources, and partaking in frivolous pastimes. Boston’s suffering, these communities declared, presented a threat to every colonist. Grassroots activists next called for a Continental Congress to coordinate and enforce a pan-colonial resistance movement to pressure Parliament’s repeal of the Coercive Acts. Once convened, delegates of the First Continental Congress drafted the Articles of Association which incorporated many directives already circulating in the town and county resolutions. Traditionally presented as a colonial boycott of British manufactures, the Association regulated cultural as well as commercial practices. It advised colonists to avoid waste and extravagance and singled out horse racing, cockfighting, theatergoing, and other displays of leisure as examples of moral decay. Echoing the grassroots resolutions, Congress also urged colonists to commit to nonimportation and non-consumption of British wares and nonexportation of American goods. Through these directives, Congress sought to achieve imperial reconciliation and colonial moral regeneration, yet its commitment to self-preservation reveals it focused more on restoring American virtue than returning harmony to the empire. To enforce the Articles of Association, Congress recommended towns and counties to create Committees of Inspection and Observation. Composed of locally elected men, these committees regulated their neighbors’ behavior and condemned violators of the Association as enemies of America. Using colonial newspapers, private letters, pamphlets, Congress’s official journals, Peter Force’s American Archives, and a wealth of other primary and secondary literature, this dissertation reveals how the Continental Association organized local communities of suffering. Members of these communities voluntarily suspended cultural and commercial practices to protect political identities they felt were in danger. In the process, those sacrificing in the common cause separated from the broader imperial community and formed an American political community. / History

Europe Behind the Exhibition : A Study of European Identity in NEMO’s Statements

The Network of European Museum Organisations (NEMO) was founded in 1992 withthe goal of facilitating cooperation between museums in Europe. Today, the networkworks closely with the European Union to advocate for museum professionals on aEuropean level. Its members, museums and museum organizations from countries in theCouncil of Europe, are heavily encouraged to take initiatives to improve jointinternational efforts. The repeated contacts of NEMO with the EU as well as their workto bring European museums together raise the question of the promotion of Europeanvalues and European identity: the hypothesis is that, in statements on the organization’swebpage, themes and patterns that coincide with the construction and defense ofEuropean identity will appear. To what extent does NEMO advocate for a Europeanidentity? How does it relate cultural heritage to European identity, and how is this relationrepresented in their dialogue with the EU? To answer the research questions, a qualitativedata analysis was conducted. This revealed, throughout the material, multiple instancesof NEMO reinforcing the principles of European values and European identity – and notjust in terms of exhibitions, but the people behind them as well: museum professionalsare incited to develop their own identity as well. Some of the arguments were reminiscentof Hobsbawm’s theories on the construction of nationalism. NEMO also defends cultureand cultural heritage as keystones of European identity, especially considering thevulnerability of the world of culture in situations of crisis. Therefore, NEMO uses culturalheritage to support the construction of a European identity among citizens, includingmuseum professionals; this relation is used as a foundation of their advocacy work at theEuropean level.

Post-Colonial Reading: Cultural Representations of Ethnicity and National Identity in English Textbooks for Swedish Upper Secondary School

The aim of this study is to examine if English textbooks offer a cultural perspective of the English-speaking world in accordance with Swedish ordinances and recent research. The research question is: How is the English-speaking world culturally represented in English textbooks for Swedish upper secondary school course A in terms of ethnicity and national identity? The study comprises four textbooks from 2000 or later. The analysis is carried out within the framework of post-colonial theory. Four aspects are focused on: the ideological point of view, the representation of ethnicity, the representation of national identity and how these issues correspond to the ordinances. The results display that the books contain almost no biased stereotypes and that they fulfil several, if not always all, of the requirements of the English syllabus. All books include texts that provide balanced information about the ways of living, the cultural traditions and the historical conditions of a few selected countries. There are also exercises and activities that encourage intercultural understanding. However, the focus is mainly on the West and the view of culture is remarkably often based on national and monolithic assumptions. In particular, the positive values of cultural and ethnic diversity are still not fully acknowledged. In order to develop international solidarity and greater understanding and tolerance of other people, a higher degree of post-colonial and diasporic writing is needed. Above all, cultural issues have to be allowed to imbue the entire material.

An Emotional Protector : The gendering of Sweden´s national identity construction - a discursive investigation during the `European migration crisis´ 2014-2016

During the `European migration crisis´ Sweden´s policies on migration underwent a change from welcoming refugees generously into the country to closing its borders strictly. This thesis analyzes how discourses contributed to the construction of Sweden´s gendered national identity during the time of the `European migration crisis´ 2014-2016 from a poststructuralist feminist perspective. It contributes to the studies of International Relations and the field of Global Political Economy in that it studies the contribution of foreign policy discourses on migration to the construction of gendered national identity. It does so through a poststructuralist discourse analysis which was strongly inspired by Lene Hansen´s (2006) methodological tool and stands in constant dialogue with feminist theory. The theoretical and methodological framework of the thesis leads to asking specifically how discourses of delineating the Self from the Other contributed to the gendering of Sweden´s national identity in relation to the dimensions of space, time and ethical responsibility; and building on this how discourses of emotion and protection contributed to the gendering of its national identity.  The empirical work identifies the importance of the discourse of `emotional protection´ for the construction of Sweden´s gendered national identity and makes through this a point for overcoming the binary of femininity and masculinity and giving multiple femininities a place in the studies of International Relations.
