The Impact of Climate Change on Late Medieval English CultureRowlatt, Linnéa Shekinah 13 January 2011 (has links)
This MA thesis scrutinizes metaphors used by the late medieval English in order to explore the cultural response to climate anomalies of varying severity prefacing the Little Ice Age. The thesis indicates that changes in these cultural expressions marked a transformation in late medieval English writers' conceptions of the natural world and their relationship to it. The central hypothesis is that repeated, long-term unreliable and uncertain weather conditions, and the resulting material insecurities and losses, stimulated a fundamental cultural response which reconfigured the metaphors used for the natural world. Although the representation of nature is inescapably an act of imagination, metaphors and metonymies for nature will be identified in the medieval creative literature, as well as the proto-scientific study of weather, and, in the context of the socioeconomic metabolism model, be brought under the light of conceptual metaphor analysis for elucidation.

Culture Change in a Local Cultures of Papua New Guinea Author: Julie Grúzová Abstract The subject of this dissertation is the study of the local Nungon community living in Papua New Guinea. It focuses mainly on those sociocultural changes, which occurred as a result of the environmental protection in this area, and on their impacts on the cultural identity of the local inhabitants. Special attention is devoted to the study of visualization and representation of culture, nature, biodiversity protection, social and cultural changes and the future of the community. A partial objective is also to present ethnographic data and facts about the local Nungon community. A range of methods has been employed in the effort to fulfil the set objectives; the work is based on field research in the observed local community and on the techniques associated with it. The specific technique used to study cultural identity is a native drawing which was used to analyze cultural representations and visualizations of culture. Analyses of native drawings enable uncover a native understanding of the phenomenon of biodiversity conservation and related cultural changes. The thesis represents a unique visual material, which served as the basis for the analysis and interpretation of the sociocultural changes that are taking place in the...

Någon eller något? : En undersökning av djurgestaltning i tre skönlitterära verk / Someone or something? : An exploration of animal portrayal in three literary works.Holmgren, Sara January 2019 (has links)
This paper intends to examine animal portrayal in literature with the guidance of three literary works; Charlotte’s Web, The Call of the Wild and The Guest Cat. The overall purpose is to explore the representation of animals in text and see what it possibly could show about our – the humans – view of animals. Through this I investigate what we do when we interpret animals in text and how this portrayal can effect animals, with the help of a moral philosophical angle. I put focus on how the view of animals can be effected depending on if one sees animals as an object or a subject – someone or something. Questions used are: How are animals portrayed in this fiction? What can this portrayal show about our relationship with – and view of – animals? The analysis show consequences of both sides through the thought that both views still can be a sign of power over animals, since we never completely can understand animal’s thoughts or actions. I argue, however, that there still is a value to reflect about the animal in literature because it can demonstrate a shifting animal view and let us reflect not only about the animals in literature – but in the reality as well. / Denna uppsats ämnar undersöka djurs gestaltning i litteratur med vägledning av tre litterära verk; Charlotte’s Web, The Call of the Wild och Gästkatten.

Relicário [a natureza da natureza] / -Assumpção, Flora Romanelli 19 February 2019 (has links)
Reliquary [the nature of nature] is the body of artistic works gathered here in this cohesive form, where seeing, doing and thinking are faces of the same creative act.
The study attempts to open Husserl's model of a non-scientific lifeworld for pedagogical investigations of the relationship between technology and “Bildung” in the scientific world. It discusses developmental problems of late modernity under plural questions and brings together approaches and traditions that have taken different paths to the further development of modern “Bildungs”-theory. The central question is how modern technology can be problematized on the one hand as the alienation of human beings from the world of life and on the other hand be appreciated as a product of human freedom and the shaping of the world. Four chapters present the methodological approaches and answers that philosopher and educator Eugen Fink (1905–1975), philosopher Martin Heidegger (1889–1976), philosopher and educationalist Theodor Litt (1880–1962), and sociologist Helmut Schelsky (1912–1984) have given to the question of the relationship between education and technology. In the course of their positions, a concert will be developed whose originality lies in addressing the coordination problems of “Bildung” (education), “Technik” (technology) and “Lebenswelt” (lifeworld) from a post-dualist, praxis-theoretical as well as post-humanist perspective.
