Toward a More Perfect Union: Religion and Education in American Public Schools

Thesis advisor: Thomas H. Groome / The public schools in the United States fail to deliver a curriculum that adequately addresses religion in general and the many world religions in particular. This lacuna does not represent the constitutionally required neutrality of schools toward religion(s) and non-religion, but instead indicates the existence of what the author terms the hostility of neglect. When the curriculum privileges non-religious epistemologies, ideologies, and worldviews, such as secularism and scientism, often to the exclusion of religious ways of knowing and making meaning, then the schools violate the First Amendment of the Constitution as interpreted by the Supreme Court. In this dissertation, the dominant myths of America’s founding are examined historically in an effort to provide a thick description and critical analysis of the reigning meta-narratives that influence the debate concerning religion in American public schools (chapter 1). Then, turning to the particular, some current models of inclusion or exclusion of religion(s) in/from the curriculum are identified and examined, with a brief proposal for a new way forward called the Meaningful Inclusion Approach (chapter 2). To demonstrate the constitutionality of this new proposal, a careful study of the Constitution and its interpretation by the Supreme Court is presented, highlighting especially the demand for neutrality and the Court’s positive opinion concerning teaching about religion(s) in public schools as part of a secular program of education that is considered complete (chapter 3). The constitutional question is followed by a critique of the reigning educational paradigm, which is unduly subservient to the market economy, too narrowly focused on STEM technical knowledge, and hyper-individualistic. In an exploration of alternative educational philosophies, warrant is found for not only teaching about religion(s) but also learning from religion(s), thus taking seriously the demands of neutrality and the promise of a holistic, liberal education (chapter 4). The author then proposes resituating the educational project in terms of the common good. A basic framework is proposed for education that is rooted in a healthy understanding of the human person in society, and which calls for a problem-posing approach to education that values cooperation, building bridges through dialogue to encourage the virtue and commitment of solidarity, and openness to both religious and non-religious contributions to human knowledge and wisdom (chapter 5). Finally, a consideration of the unique circumstances of our post-secular age and the urgency of the need for religious literacy in a globalized world is presented as a major rationale for changing the curricula of our public schools without delay. The dissertation concludes with a proposal for the Meaningful Inclusion Approach (MIA) to learning about, from, and with religion(s) in age-appropriate ways from kindergarten through grade 12 (chapter 6). / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2021. / Submitted to: Boston College. Title: The usage of virtual reality in therapy of patients with neglect syndrome with consideration of a cybersickness risk. Objective: To find out if stroke patients with neglect syndrome tend to have higher risk of gaining cybersickness after using virtual reality compared to stroke patients without neglect syndrome and healthy population. Also, to find out if the severity of neglect syndrome has correlation with the severity of gained cybersickness. Afterwards to evaluate the trend of making games in virtual reality for treating neglect syndrome with consideration of a cybersickness risk. Methods: The experiment participants played game in virtual reality developed for treating neglect syndrome for ten minutes. During the game participants were seated and were playing using head movements. A HTC VIVE console was used to deliver the virtual reality game. Participants were divided into 3 groups: the group Zdraví (n = 12) without neurological impairment, the group CMP (n = 6) for stroke patients without neglect syndrome and the group Neglect (n = 10) for stroke patients with neglect syndrome (KF-NAP ≥ 1). Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka hur anställda inom förskolan förhåller sig till anmälningsplikten. Med en kvalitativ metod och semistrukturerade intervjuer tar vi reda på hur anställda i förskolan resonerar kring anmälningsplikten, hur de i praktiken förhåller sig till att anmäla samt om det finns några specifika rutiner. Studiens empiri kommer vi att analysera med hjälp av organisationsteorin, detta med ett relationellt perspektiv. Resultatet i studien visar att förskolorna har rutiner för hur de ska anmäla medans rutinen för när de ska anmäla är kopplad till kommunikationen mellan ledning och personal. Det framkommer att pedagogernas värderingar och stödet från chefen påverkar hur personal inom barnomsorg förhåller sig till att anmäla. Hur de ser på anmälningsplikten ser olika ut för varje individ samt att de anser att de får allt för lite utbildning kring sin plikt att anmäla. / The purpose of this study is to study preschool employees behave when it comes to report neglect and how they act as mandatory reporters of suspected child neglect or abuse. Through a qualitative analysis and semistructured interviews we have studied how employees interpret the mandate to report, how they practically apply it in their day to day work, and also what the guidelines for reporting are, if any. The empirical research have been analyzed with the help of the organizational theory through a relational perspective. The results of the study show that while preschools indeed have requirements and processes in place for dealing with the legal duty to report child abuse, when to do so is more dependent on the communication between manager and employees. It appears that preschool employees personal values and level of support from management determines how personnel relates to reporting when abuse or neglect is observed or suspected in a childcare environment. How employees interpret mandated reporting is highly individual in addition to staff feeling like there is insufficient training when it comes to mandated reporting requirements and protocols.

The aim of this thesis is to map self-harm characteristics of adolescents with personal history of traumatic experience including the purpose and development of self-harm over time. First, in the theoretical section of this paper, the developmental stage of adolescence and its risks for engaging in self-harm is portrayed. Then, the topic of trauma, its diagnostic background and neurobiological impact is described, followed by chapter about self-harming itself, its forms, frequencies, functions, etiology and its association with suicide. By the end of this section the role of adolescent resilience in coping with the impact of trauma and self-harm is discussed. The follow up empirical research project of qualitative nature conducted under Dětské krizové centrum includes a set of case studies that were holistically evaluated for all aspects of self- harm and its development over time. Människor lämnar alla efter sig ett miljöavtryck när man inhandlar matvaror. Hur stort miljöavtryck man upplever att man lämnar efter sig är dock inte alltid korrekt. Syftet med studien var att undersöka om upplevelsen av en köprundas miljöavtryck påverkas särskilt av huruvida köprundan inleds med ett miljövänligt val eller avslutas med ett miljövänligt val. Detta för att få en bredare förståelse om kognitiva mekanismer som ligger till grund för miljörelaterat beteende. I denna kvantitativa studie så studerades psykologin i människors upplevelse av miljöpåverkan genom att undersöka hur miljömärkning påverkar upplevelsen av miljöavtryck från konsumentval. Studien undersökte ifall miljömärkta varor har större effekt på denna upplevelse om de märkta varorna inhandlas i början eller i slutet i en sekvens av inköp. Detta utfördes genom ett digitalt test som 32 deltagare (17 kvinnor, 15 män) vars ålder var mellan 22 och 63 år (M=32,31 år, SD=10,92) fick delta i och skattade sin miljöpåverkan som deltagarna tror att varorna hade under den fiktiva köprundan. Genom att undersöka ifall ordningen från första eller sista miljövalet har betydelse så får man en primacy eller en recency effekt. Denna studie indikerar på att under en köprunda när den avslutas med ett miljövänligt val så kommer människor uppleva att ens köprunda har lägre miljöavtryck i sin helhet. Studien visar alltså på en recency effekt samt duration neglect, däremot ingen primacy effekt. / Every single person who buys food products leave an environmental footprint. How big of an environmental footprint you feel you leave behind is not always accurate. The purpose of the study was to examine whether the experience of a shopping round's environmental footprint is particularly affected by whether the shopping round begins with an environmentally friendly choice or ends with an environmentally friendly choice. This is to gain a broader understanding of cognitive mechanisms which are the basis of environmental behaviour. In this quantitative study, the psychology of people's experience of environmental impact were studied by examining how environmental labelling affects the experience of environmental footprint from consumer choices. The study examines whether eco-labelled goods have a greater effect on this experience if the labelled goods are purchased at the beginning or at the end of a sequence of purchases. This is done through a digital test that 32 participants (17 women, 15 men) aged between 22 and 63 years (M=32,31 år, SD=10,92) can take part in where they estimate their environmental impact that the participants think the goods have had during the fictitious shopping round. By checking the order, if the first or last choice is important, you get a primacy or a recency effect. This study indicates that during a shopping spree when it ends with an environmentally friendly choice, people will experience that one's shopping spree has a lower environmental footprint as a whole. The study thus shows a recency effect and a duration neglect, but no primacy effect.

Bakgrund: Barn som utsätts för försummelse riskerar livslånga hälsoproblem. Tecken på att ett barn utsätts för försummelse kan vara till hjälp i identifieringen av försummelse. Här visar sig anknytningen spela en central roll. Genom kunskap om tecken på barn som far illa kan barnhälsovårdssjuksköterskor bli mer uppmärksamma i mötet med familjerna. Däremot råder det brist på kunskap om försummelse bland medicinsk personal. Syfte: Att belysa barnhälsovårdssjuksköterskans erfarenheter av att identifiera barn som försummas. Metod: Utifrån en kvalitativ ansats intervjuades barnhälsovårdsjuksköterskor (n=10) med frågor utifrån erfarenheter, där insamlade data har analyserats genom kvalitativ innehållsanalys. Resultat: Erfarenheter av försummelse framkom i form av en komplexitet kring begreppet försummelse och dess innebörd samt vad som sker i identifieringen. Ur detta framträdde fyra kategorier under analysprocessen; Att reflektera över ett komplext begrepp, Att se olika tecken, Att samverka kring barnet samt Att önska än mer utbildning. Dessa redovisar likartade erfarenheter bland barnhälsovårdssjuksköterskorna, där det fanns en samsämmighet i vikten av försummelse som ämne. Konklusion: En tydlig definition av begreppet försummelse och dess innebörd behövs då det kan tänkas underlätta för barnhälsovårdssjuksköterskor i sitt arbete. Vilket kan möjligggöra en tidig identifiering av tecken på försummelse som i sin tur kan leda till att barn erbjuds tidigt stöd. Rekommenderat är därför vidare forskning som möjliggör sådan definition.
