Do College Students Have a Lack of Awareness Around Human Trafficking?

Cavender, Tessa 01 May 2023 (has links) (PDF)
Human Trafficking is an epidemic around the world, but if you ask the average person, they know little more than what is shown in media. To try to understand this, we asked the questions of whether college students also have a lack of awareness around trafficking, and if so, is education the best way to fix this? Our literature review found many professions, such as healthcare and K-12 education, are pushing for human trafficking curriculums to be implemented in their fields. To determine if this method would be effective on a college campus, five college students were interviewed to determine what their baseline knowledge is. Most of the questions they were asked were left unanswered due to lack of knowledge; this answered question one. Two out of five students were randomly selected to participate in a human trafficking 101 presentation. Four weeks later, those two individuals were given the same interview, with no contact with the data during those four weeks, to see what they retained. On interview two, both participants showed a drastic increase in knowledge, comprehension, and the ability to discuss the topic more fluidly. This shows that, when done by a licensed professional, a social worker or someone from a trafficking nonprofit, human trafficking education has proved very effective in creating awareness. We found this answered question two in the way we hoped.

Methods and Metrics for Human Interaction with Bio-Inspired Robot Swarms

Kerman, Sean C. 02 December 2013 (has links) (PDF)
In this thesis we propose methods and metrics for human interaction with bio-inspired robot teams. We refine the concept of a stakeholder and demonstrate how a human can use stakeholders to lead a swarm as well as switch the swarm between different collective behaviors. We extend the human interaction metrics of interaction time and interaction effort presented in [1] to swarm systems and introduce the concept of interaction effort. These metrics allow us to understand how well the system performs under human influence. We employ systems theory to estimate these metrics, which is useful because this can be done without performing user studies.

Human-Swarm Interaction: Effects on Operator Workload, Scale, and Swarm Topology

Pendleton, Brian O. 04 September 2013 (has links) (PDF)
Robots, including UAVs, have found increasing use in helping humans with dangerous and difficult tasks. The number of robots in use is increasing and is likely to continue increasing in the future. As the number of robots increases, human operators will need to coordinate and control the actions of large teams of robots. While multi-robot supervisory control has been widely studied, it requires that an operator divide his or her attention between robots. Consequently, the use of multi-robot supervisory control is limited by the number of robots that a human or team of humans can reasonably control. Swarm robotics -- large numbers of low-cost robots displaying collective behaviors -- offers an alternative approach by providing the operator with a small set of inputs and parameters that alter the behavior of a large number of autonomous or semi-autonomous robots. Researchers have asserted that this approach is more scalable and offers greater promise for managing huge numbers of robots. The emerging field of Human-Swarm Interaction (HSI) deals with the effective management of swarms by human operators. In this thesis we offer foundational work on the effect of HSI (a) on the individual robots, (b) on the group as a whole, and (c) on the workload of the human operator. We (1) show that existing general swarm algorithms are feasible on existing robots and can display collective behaviors as shown in simulations in the literature, (2) analyze the effect of interaction style and neighborhood type on the swarm's topology, (3) demonstrate that operator workload stays stable as the size of the swarm increases, but (4) find that operator workload is influenced by the interaction style. We also present considerations for swarm deployment on real robots.

Verksamma förskollärares tolkningar av försummelse : En kvalitativ studie som bidrar med kunskap kring förskollärares uppfattningar av försummelse i hemmet / Preschool teachers interpretations of neglect : A qualitative study that contributes knowledge about preschool teachers preceptions og neglect in the home

Karas, Kajsa, Mafi Balani, Maryam January 2024 (has links)
The overall purpose of the study is to contribute more knowledge about preschool teachers' perceptions of neglect in the home. Previous research describes that there is a knowledge gap in preschool teachers' perceptions of neglect. To investigate how preschool teachers interpret the concept of neglect and work around it, the study is structured a qualitative semi-structured interview as a method. There were a total of six preschool teachers who participated from four different preschools.   The results show that the informants have some knowledge about neglect, but they are more uncertain about psychological and emotional neglect than physical neglect, which can lead to a challenge in detecting neglect. The informants in the study believe that there is a connection between a secure attachment to the child and recognizing the signs of neglect. Being a secure attachment figure for the child can make it possible to see when the child's behavior varies. This means that the child feels safe and dares to show signs or tell what is going on in the home, which helps preschool teachers to detect neglect. The preschool teachers in the study explain that a good relationship with the guardians bodes well for detecting and addressing neglect. The results also show that several of the interviewees feel anxious about reporting suspicions of neglect to the Social Services.  The conclusion of the study points to the need for preschool teachers to gain additional knowledge on the subject to be able to help the neglected child. This can be done through continuing education at preschools. In order to work preventively, this can be taken up further during preschool teacher training.

Arbetsterapeutiska interventioner vid neglekt för vuxna personer efter stroke : En litteraturöversikt / Occupational therapy interventions for adults with neglect after a stroke : A literature review

Edeholt, Elisabet, Wennberg, Frida January 2023 (has links)
Purpose: to summarize and describe Occupational Therapy Interventions in case of Neglect for adults with stroke. Method: a literature review using both quantitative and qualitative methods and reviewed resulted in 11 studies. Data was collected through a systematic literature search in three databases within medicine and health and with secondary searches, from the CINAHL, Medline and PubMed databases. Data were analyzed and compiled through interesting findings and categorized into four categories based on the Occupational Therapy Intervention Process Model (OTIPM) Intervention models; Compensatory model, Model for activity training, Model for improvement of personal and physical factors, and Educational model. Results: there are a limited amount of Occupational Therapy Interventions in case of Neglect for people affected by stroke. The studies were carried out around the world with varying intensity. The interventions were mostly carried out in a hospital environment and there were variations in how long after stroke diagnosis the interventions were carried out. Model for the improvement of personal and physical factors was one of the most frequently occurring interventions. Conclusion: there are a limited number different Occupational Therapy Interventions in case of Neglect for people who have suffered a stroke, and that within Swedish healthcare there are only few interventions that are recommended by the National Board of Health and Welfare in Sweden. Further research are needed to produce evidence and measure the effect of each individual intervention to facilitate the Occupational Therapy work and for the National Board of Health and Welfare to be able to recommend those for the rehabilitation work in case of Neglect for people affected by stroke.

"Misstanke betyder inte att vi ska ha några bevis" : En kvalitativ studie om skolkuratorers arbete i samband med att de misstänker att ett barn far illa / “Suspicion does not mean we need to have evidence" : A qualitative study of school counselors’ work when suspecting that a child is being maltreated

Bornikowska, Martyna, Carlsson, Rebecca January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of the study is to investigate school counselors' work with issues related to concerns that a child is being harmed due to abuse or neglect, and what they believe affects their decision to submit or not to submit a report of concern. The study uses a qualitative method with semi structured interviews. The theoretical framework for this study is neoinstitutional theory with focus on organizational fields and institutional logics. The results show that school counselors have a central role in their schools reporting system due to them often being responsible for writing and signing the reports. Considerations they make consist of whether or not to make a report and what approach they should have. Central factors that affect school counselors’ decision-making is; if they suspect physical abuse, if the guardians are willing to cooperate and whether or not social services advice for a report to be made or not. The findings of this study show that school counselors use their knowledge of social work in regards to dealing with suspicion of abuse and neglect and in making reports of concern.

Honkonen, Anne, Seljemo, Mikaela January 2024 (has links)
Background: An important task for nurses in child health care is to support and follow up children between the ages of 0-5 in terms of health, development and growth environment. Child health care should prevent ill health in children and identify the occurrence of problems at an early stage and take measures for them, as well as provide support in the event of violence in families. No compiled research could be found on the nurse's support in child health for young children who are abused. Purpose: To illustrate the experiences of nurses in child health of providing support to young children who are being abused. Method: A general literature review based on 16 original articles with qualitative design. Results: Four thematic categories and twelve subcategories emerged on how support can be given to families where children are abused or at risk of being harmed. Nurses felt that support for children who are abused needed to be done by working family-centered, with the child's best interests in focus. Nurses worked preventively by identifying risk factors at an early stage. When reporting concerns, transparency with the guardians was needed and the aim was not to lose the relationship with the guardians, which could potentially be harmful to the child. Conclusion: Several aspects are important in order to provide the best support for children who are being abused. A family-centred approach, preventive work, understanding of the child and a focus on their physical, mental and social health, as well as interprofessional collaboration and support from colleagues are all important to be able to provide the best support. The nurses experience little control over the situation after a report, and that it affects the work with the families.

Analysis of the effectiveness of the Circle of Care Program in increasing life outcomes among teen mothers in Troup County, Georgia

Brace, Andrea Michelle 02 May 2009 (has links)
Troup County, Georgia has been afflicted with elevated teen pregnancy and subsequent teen pregnancy rates. As a result, Circle of Care was developed to reduce the subsequent teen pregnancy rate within Troup County. Circle of Care works with pregnant and parenting teens and their families to enhance their quality of life. A case manager provides information, education and support to enable the teens to stay in school, prevent subsequent teen pregnancies, and prevent child abuse and neglect. This study evaluates the effectiveness of Circle of Care by determining if intensity and duration of program participation have an impact on achieving the desired outcomes for program participants. The results of this research suggest that Circle of Care is reducing subsequent teen pregnancies, increasing educational attainment and decreasing child abuse and neglect among program participants.
