Brood sex ratio and sex differences in Tengmalm’s owl : (Aegolius funereus)Hipkiss, Tim January 2002 (has links)
Males and females differ in morphology and behaviour, so that selection acts differently on the two sexes. This changes the relative reproductive success of males and females, and it is beneficial for parents to bias the sex ratio of their broods in favour of the sex with the best survival and breeding prospects. Differences between the sexes and brood sex ratio in Tengmalm’s owl (Aegolius funereus) in northern Sweden were investigated, using a molecular sexing technique based on PCRamplification of sex-linked CHD1 genes. Among owls caught during autumn migration, females were commoner than males, especially within juveniles. However, in contrast to earlier studies, it was shown that adult males sometimes undertake migratory movements indicatory of nomadism. Measurements of these owls revealed that sexual size dimorphism in Tengmalm’s owl is not as great as previously reported from studies carried out during the breeding season. Females were slightly larger (4% by mass) than males, probably owing to the different roles of males and females during breeding, when this dimorphism is greater. The size difference between male and female nestlings was found to be similar to that for adults in autumn, and to investigate whether this led to differential mortality, the effect of supplementary feeding on mortality of male and female nestlings was studied. Supplementary feeding reduced male mortality when vole abundance was low, and it was concluded that larger female nestlings out-competed their smaller brothers, who then suffered increased mortality when food was scarce. Recruitment of male nestlings into the breeding population declined with decreasing food supply at the time of fledging, a pattern not observed in females. Juvenile males were therefore more vulnerable to food shortage than females, both in the nest and after fledging. Mean brood sex ratio varied significantly among years characterized by different phases of the vole cycle and associated vole abundance. Broods were male-biased (63% males) in a year when the food supply was favourable during spring and summer, neutral (50%) in a year with an intermediate food supply, and female-biased (35% males) in a year when food was in short supply. Parents appeared to adaptively adjust the sex ratio of their broods according to the relative mortality risk and reproductive potential of sons and daughters.

Arts textiles contemporains : quêtes de pertinences culturelles / Contemporary textile arts : searches of cultural relevanciesCrenn, Julie 12 October 2012 (has links)
The study advises an overview of the textile creation in the widest sense because we approach the artistic practices using period costumes, embroidery, textile assembly, hair, traditional fabrics, tapestry or quilting art. That it is about works of Yinka Shonibare, Louise Bourgeois, Hassan Musa, Faith Ringgold, Kimsooja or Tracey Emin, each of the artists chosen for the study, is in search of a cultural relevance within his artistic practice where personal and collective experiences are interwoven. The cultural relevance being understood here as a critical and theoretical reconstruction of a (his)story by the mean of appropriation of specific textile materials and techniques. We opted for a thematic work to analyze at best what we call the global textile scene. A first part proposes the analysis of works from artists who think about Black culture and history. We will study works that shade light on two traumas: Slavery and colonialism, as well as their echoes on nowadays culture and society. So the works of Faith Ringgold, Yinka Shonibare, Hassan Musa and Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons will be revealed to speak about issues such as “cultural hybridity”, creolization and the situation of the African contemporary art or also the representation of the Black body in art. A second part is centred on the notions of exile, Diaspora, discomfort caused by nomadism and the “in-between” status. The practices of Mona Hatoum, Arab women artists such as Lalla Essaydi, Shadi Ghadirian or Ghazel, and the works of Kimsooja, Janine Antoni and Ana de la Cueva will allow us to enter the heart of an artistic scene the critical stakes of which carry us to think about the globalisation, within its positive (enrichment, exchanges, dialog) as negatives aspects (standardisation, losing of local specificities). Each of these artists dreads the world and the society in a poetic and political way. The third part is finally dedicated to the women artists who chose the use of traditional techniques as embroidery, weaving or tapestry. Since the explosion of the feminist scene during the 1970s until current works, embroidery is henceforth no more considered as a typically feminine leisure, but as a real political weapon. A weapon steered towards the male chauvinism, patriarchy or gendered disparities. In this frame, the practices of such artists as Elaine Reichek, Judy Chicago, Louise Bourgeois, Joana Vasconcelos, Tracey Emin, Ghada Amer, Cathy Burghi, will allow to approach the embroidery in contemporary art in a diversified and heterogeneous way. Through these various analyses, we observe the deconstruction of art hierarchy and that contemporary textile art appears as a committed and relevant art, proposing perspectives of rich reflections in connection with the actual issues of our world.

Design sem fronteiras: a relação entre o nomadismo e a sustentabilidade / Design without borders: the relation between nomadism and sustainabilityLara Leite Barbosa 22 January 2009 (has links)
The thesis aims to articulate nomadism and sustainability through design. The hypothesis aims to confirm that nomadism and sustainability are closely related and tries to understand how designer can incorporate these principles in work process. It reflects about sustainability issues and nomadic behavior, accoding to the theoretical referencial of the contributions of authors such as Bernard Rudofsky, Ezio Manzini, Felix Guatari, Gilles Deleuze, Michel Maffesoli, Paul Zumthor, Robert Kronenburg, Teshome Gabriel, Victor Papanek amongst others, under the optics of design. The thesis includes results of interviews, carried through in Brazil and abroad, with specialists and architects who work and experience the thematic searched. It has a survey to identify and to analyze design solutions to inhabit a world where the necessity for dislocation has become more and more recurrent. The proposals for mobile and adaptable dwellings go beyond usual categories, therefore, design without borders crosses the limits between architecture and design to hybrid forms that wanders between buildingvehicles; furnituretools; garmentequipment. The five chapters are divided by theme in categories To go away; To recognize the place, To know the others; To catch resources; To define duration; To go back providing a range of keys for interpretation of the nomadic journey. The goal of the thesis is to generate innovative design directions that consider the contemporaries forms of nomadic life, respecting the environmental requirements. These design directions are presented in the conclusion, as suggestions for designers.

Nesse
ênfase na colagem / This dissertation aims at analyzing the nomadism inside the poetical work of Rui Pires
Cabral – Portuguese poet and translator –, developing the concept in its geographic aspect,
concerning the movements along the space referred in the verses, and its formal aspect,
based on the intermedial dislocations present in that poetics. Therefore, at first we intend
to question how the constant desterritorializations done by the poetical eye constitute a
landless and foreign subjectivity that, on its turn, possesses a powerful resistance against
the imposed sedentarism; while in the second moment we aim to demonstrate the
intermedial relations between poetry and music, poetry and other literary forms, and
poetry and image, done through a dynamic creative process which we called “poetical
nomadism”, with a focus on collage

ANYTHING IS A THING ENOUGH TO PARTY / ANYTHING IS A THING ENOUGH TO PARTYPolcarová, Markéta Unknown Date (has links)
This thesis "Anything is thing enough to party" seeks to explore the knowledge base of Jane Bennett's vital materialism and analyzes the connections between advanced capitalism, mobility and unpredictable movement of goods and things from the perspective of object oriented ontology. The thesis also focuses on the new perspective of ready-made object and perspective of installation. In order to research the topic and implement the practical part of the project, this study took place in Mexico as a self-initiated art residency in order to explore flows of found objects under the gaze of a foreigner.

Internet jako zasíťovaný most: Komunitární účinky internetu v postmoderní společnosti / Internet as a Networked Bridge: Community Effects of the Internet in Postmodern SocietyŠarochová, Jitka January 2014 (has links)
In my master thesis I deal the with specific creation of communities on the Internet. The aim of this essay is to contribute to the debate about the problematics of the Internet and its role in the postmodern society. The basic idea is that the physical and virtual world leads to formation of communities. I believe that association with communities can be considered as a natural human phenomenon. Internet is perceived as a space, which provides the opportunity for its users to organize themselves into virtual communities. The question is if the creation of virtual communities is the goal of postmodern society. On the one hand Internet can be seen as a space of strengthening personal individuality, because of freedom and authonomy it provides. But on the other hand communities could place demands on their members, thereby they represent certain limitation of thein member's individuality. In this thesis I verify the hypothesis that the Internet is a space that leads to formation of virtual communities at the expense of developing one's own individuality.

Digital nomads and the future of work : A qualitative study which discuss challenges digital nomads and organizations face and the future of workLidman, Sofia January 2023 (has links)
The phenomenon of Digital Nomads (DN) is quickly becoming a rising trend within the knowledge workforce. Their idea is to work remotely and travel the world at the same time. In this thesis 8 semi-structured interviews with DNs were performed to answer the following research questions: (1) What kind of challenges do Digital Nomads face and how do they overcome them? (2) What can we learn from digital nomadism in relation to the future of work? Half of the participants were self-employed DN and the other half were employed by a company. Challenges they faced were divided into three perspectives: individual, work-related and global challenges. Their definition of a ‘true’ DN, their attitudes towards corporate work and experienced challenges are presented in the findings. By analyzing the findings, DN in relation to the future of work is discussed as well as challenges DN and corporates face together and suggestions on how to create a better collaboration between the two is presented.

[pt] DESLOCAR-SE NO HORIZONTE IMPOSSÍVEL / [en] MOVING INTO THE IMPOSSIBLE HORIZONMANOELA PAULA SAWITZKI 16 October 2019 (has links)
[en] Moving into the impossible horizon proposes multiple articulations around the issue of foreignness. The narrative During the construction of the Wall of China, by Franz Kafka, offers the structural model, in which, heterogeneous zones of similarities are composed from blocks erected and arranged in a flux of journey. In 2007, Biño Sauitzvy, an artist born in southern Brazil, who had migrated to France four years earlier, returned to give presentations of his two most recent works, H to H and La Divina. They are inter-sectional productions, between dance-theater and performance, in which a young theater director returns as a performer, choreographer and dancer. In the contact of the narrator of the thesis with this new body occurs the encounter with the foreigner that reveals itself there. He is the trigger for this work. The foreigner presents himself in the body-gender-sex relations, in discussions around the language-language-writing-silence axis, in social unfoldings, and in different appearances of frontiers and their fissures. This situation imposes itself in the writing and is discussed in the intersection between works of art (performance, dance-theater, plastic arts and literature), theoretical thinking and the fabling experience. It seeks to elaborate a writing on the path opened by the American researcher and writer Maggie Nelson, that is, of self-theory - a genre that develops from the writing modes present in works by Roland Barthes, Susan Sontag and Paul B Precious. It is from these texts and spaces that a writing in movement is developed, crossed, finally, by the fragmentary strategy of the writer Jean Genet in Diary of a thief and A passionate captive, producing a thesis in which life, memory, travel and writing cross (trespass) each other.
