Persson, Elisabeth, Åhlin Billeskalns, Lovisa January 2011 (has links)
Negative attitudes towards people with mental illness are found among medical personnel. The nursing psychiatric training module is structured in different ways at different universities in the country. The aim of this study was to investigate nurses´ and nursing students´ attitudes towards patients with a mental illness with two questions: What is the importance of different underlying factors of nurses' attitudes? Is it possible to influence these attitudes and if so in what ways? The method was a literature study, where qualitative and quantitative articles were studied and compared. The theoretical frame of reference, which was used, was Parse´s nursing theory and the social psychological theory The Tripartite Model of Attitude Change. The results showed that fear, ignorance and inexperience were the main factors behind the negative attitudes. Successful strategies for improving attitudes, according to the results, are practical experience and training, increased contact with persons with mental illness, theoretical training and organizational support in the workplace. The organizational support may take the form of mentoring and professional support in their everyday work. Our recommendation is that all universities with nursing education should have a common line, where practice with supervision and reflective seminars are predominant.

Mental ill health in nursing and midwifery education. A critical discourse analysis

Hargan, Janine M. January 2017 (has links)
Students diagnosed with long-term mental health conditions have been the focus of policy development for over a decade. Student mental health is on the increase and universities are legally obliged to make reasonable adjustments for disabled students. Therefore it is crucial that nursing and midwifery education provides an inclusive learning environment, while maintaining fitness to practice standards. The focus of this study was to explore how discourses of mental health, reasonable adjustments and fitness standards influence nursing and midwifery education for students with a mental health condition. Principles of Wodak’s (2001) critical discourse analysis approach, which gives prominence to dominant discourses, their justifications and persuasive nature was utilised. Ten key written texts and 23 semi-structured interviews with students, lecturers and clinical mentors were conducted to acquire the constructions of mental health, reasonable adjustments and fitness requirements. The findings show that the dominant discourses attributed to students experiencing mental ill health were around medicine, difference and blame, all of which reinforced mental health stigma. In addition, mental health discourses within both verbal and written texts were not underpinned by disability discourses, allowing the exclusion of students who disclose mental ill health from accessing reasonable adjustments. In conclusion, students considered to have a mental health label faced discriminatory barriers and legislative and regulatory requirements of equality were not implemented.

“Social skills, maybe I can't teach that...” : A qualitative study on what nursing supervisors believe students should have in terms of knowledge, abilities and attitudes.

Grönlund, Sara January 2023 (has links)
Nursing supervisors assess and supervise students on the clinical training, which is part of their work. The purpose of the study was to get a deeper understanding of what supervisors believe a student should have in terms of knowledge, abilities and attitudes. The focus was on investigating the phenomenon from the supervisor's perspective, as I felt that there was a lack of research from that point of view. The study's theoretical frame of reference was based on professional habitus, a concept that has been developed from Pierre Bourdieu's concept of habitus. The data was collected using ten qualitative interviews that were conducted digitally, with nurses who had experience of supervising students. The data was analyzed using a qualitative content analysis and five categories and 15 subcategories were created. The result showed that the supervisors considered that the most important abilities for the students were social and emotional abilities, rather than the practical and theoretical knowledge. The knowledge and abilities that emerged corresponded well to the graduation goals for nurses. The informants all had a relatively homogenous view of the dispositions that students should have and strive for and that are found in the nurse's professional habitus. The result also demonstrated unwritten and hidden criteria and abilities that a student should meet, where it was believed that to become the right person for the profession, they needed to socialize with these professional identities found in the nursing professional habitus. Opinions about what a student should know are not only based on what they do but also on how they are.

MANLIG OMVÅRDNADSHANDLEDNINGSGRUPP

Ekberg, Anja, Lidfors, Johanna January 2006 (has links)
Ekberg, A & Lidfors, J Manlig omvårdnadshandledningsgrupp. Examinationsarbete i omvårdnad 10 poäng. / Ekberg, A & Lidfors, J. Clinical supervision group with men only. A qualitative study about the factors which influence experiences, expectations and professional identity during participation in a clinical supervision group with men only. Degree Project, 10 Credit Points. Nursing Programme, Malmö University: Health and Society: Department of Nursing, 2006.Clinical supervision has developed within nursing and is defined as a supportive forum where the opportunity is given to reflect upon experiences, thoughts and feelings in different caring situations. During nursing education clinical supervision is introduced in order to give the students an opportunity to develop an ethically correct behaviour in their profession and to combine theory and practice. At Health and Society, Malmö University, there are clinical supervision groups with only male participants, in this study denominated homogeneous groups. The aim of the study was to map out the male students’ experiences and expectations of participating in a homogeneous clinical supervision group and how they experienced that their participation affected their professional identity. The study is qualitative and semi structured interviews were carried out with six men who had participated in a homogeneous group. Content analysis was used to analyse the findings. The following categories emerged; the significance of structure, atmosphere, topic of discussion, personality and the composition of the group. The expectations among the participants have been high as well as low and the participation has had small effect on their professional identity. The received results indicate that plenty of factors have been conclusive for how the group has functioned. It emerged that, apart from gender, the participants’ personalities were of great importance for the functioning of the group. Key words: Clinical supervision, expectations, experiences, homogeneous group nursing students, professional identity.

Idrogo Castro, Loayda January 2024 (has links)
Ancient societies conceived of older adults in a positive way since they represented knowledge and experience, although over time and industrial development this image has changed; People aged 60 or over in the modern period are often perceived in a negatively stereotypical way. The research had a quantitative approach, the design was descriptivetransversal, whose objective was to determine the level of beliefs of negative stereotypes towards older adults by nursing students from Chiclayo, 2023. The population was made up of 390 nursing students, the sample It was made up of 194 students and the sampling was probabilistic and stratified random, and it also met the inclusion and exclusion criteria set forth; To collect data, the “Survey of negative stereotype towards old age” (CENVE) was used, which has validation by content and reliability according to Cronbach's alpha. Subsequently, the data obtained were coded in an Excel spreadsheet, analyzed by the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) program, version 27 of Windows, and finally the criteria of ethical and scientific rigor were met at all times. The results showed that 44% of nursing students have a low level of belief in negative stereotypes towards older adults; however, in relation to the dimensions studied, it was evident that 52% of the students have a high level of belief. of negative stereotypes in Character-personality, obtaining the highest scores from students from first to fourth cycle.

Selection criteria : a factor associated with academic performance of student nurses at a public nursing college

Makhoba, Nomacala Anna 11 1900 (has links)
Nursing colleges face a high failure rate among first and second year nursing students. Appropriate selection criteria should help to recruit and select the best suitable candidates who will endure the requirements of the comprehensive four-year nursing diploma course and finally graduate. The input should be equal to the throughput. The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the extent to which selection criteria were a determinant or predictive factor of nursing students’ academic performance and success at a nursing colleges in Gauteng Province. A triangulated research design method was used for data collection, presentation, and analysis. The research population consisted of first and second year student nurses registered in public nursing college. Random sampling was opted for at the nursing college selected as research site. During the empirical phase in 2015, 280 questionnaires were distributed. The findings of the study indicated that there is a weak linear relation between academic qualification and academic performance, yet further analysis showed that there is a significant relationship between Bachelor’s degree holders and their academic achievement when admitted at nursing colleges. / Health Studies / M.A. (Health Studies)
