Sports in public art is an inventory and analysis of public art in Sweden representing sports. Sports is a phenomenon that to a very large extent shaped Swedish society during the 20th century and beyond. In what way has it left marks on public art?  The overall aim of my thesis is to inventory and define a field that is largely unexplored: Swedish public art that represents sports. Further is my aim to try to draw a representative picture of art within this field. The essay touches on two social practices, the world of sports and the arts, where socio-cultural hierarchies of power are created and maintained and where male dominance has been strong. In the essay I analyse and discuss meaning formation of this art based on gender studies. The inventory consists of 358 art works from 148 municipalities. 37 per cent of these works of art represent male athletes and 13 per cent female athletes. There are works of art were both sexes are represented and also several works of art where it’s impossible to determine the sex. Also, there are several works of art that do not represent people. Most works of art are to be find outdoors and 53 per cent has a connection/relation to a sports facility.  In the inventory the work of art is classified in three categories: Sports motive, Monuments of athletes and Sports associative work of art. Analyses are made within and between these categories and the collected material is also analysed in a time perspective. The oldest work of art in my inventory dates back to 1910 and the analyse continues up to present days.

A public work of art has something to say, both about itself and the place where it’s located. By analyzing two different pieces of art, this study will examine them in co- relation to the order of the artwork and the artistic intention of the artist, to see how well these intentions is communicated to a general audience. The analysis will be carried through on the grounds of Rosalind E. Krauss sculptural theory. Depending on the quality of this communication, the conclusion of this study shows what intentions are transmitted through this process to the audience, and discusses the potential flaws in the process from a public artwork being ordered to its meeting with the public eye.

Det här arbetet uppmärksammar hur konst kan implementeras i den fysiska planeringen av offentliga rum. Under den gångna pandemin förändrades människors levnadsmönster och sociala aktiviteter hänvisades många gånger till offentliga rum utomhus. På grund av restriktionerna fck de offentliga rummen större betydelse än tidigare och ökad utomhusvistelse ställde högre krav på gestaltningen. Frågan om vad en god gestaltning innefattas av kan riktas mot många olika ämnesområden, i det här fallet blev avsaknaden av konst i gestaltningen av offentliga rum mest aktuell. Syftet med arbetet är att ta fram två olika planförslag för Kungsplan i Karlskrona. Dessa förslag gestaltas för att kunna bidra till fler möten och upplevelser kring konst. Därtill syftar arbetet till att undersöka hur aktiviteten i ett offentligt rum kan ökas med hjälp av konst. Arbetets teoretiska ramverk utgår ifrån begreppen hållbar utveckling som mynnar ut i social hållbarhet och rumslig rättvisa. I arbetets framtagna kunskapsöversikt har ett antal faktorer identiferats kring vilka tematiska inslag som kan bidra till en inkludering av en bredare målgrupp. I arbetet har en fallstudie använts som forskningsdesign samt metoderna platsanalys och de av Gehl och Svarre framtagna metoderna Mapping och Tracing tillämpats. Genom de två planförslagen illustreras två olika exempel på tematiska inslag, där syftet är att undersöka vad en konstnärlig gestaltning av ett offentligt rum kan innebära. De tematiska inslagen rör konst med koppling till människans sinnen samt lärande, delaktighet och medskapande i konst. Slutsatsen av detta arbete är att konst kan bidra till en ökad aktivering av offentliga rum, samt att olika typer av konst och tematiska inriktningar aktiverar ett rum på olika sätt. Utplacering av konst i det offentliga rummet kan både ge fler människor möjlighet att upptäcka konst, detta kan bidra till en ökad social hållbarhet och rumslig rättvisa.

The purpose of this study is to examine the nude female figure among Karlstad municipality's public art, focus mainly on the artwork Med ett leende by the artist Viktor Korneev. Thus, the artwork is analyzed and compared with other public sculptures to demonstrate possible similarities and differences, between the works, but also in the relationship to the viewer. The chosen method for the study is semiotic analysis and reception analysis, The result is then discussed in the light of the gender studies framework via, among others, Lynda Nead and Griselda Pollock, as well as art sociologist Janet Wolff. Further result shows an ambivalent feminine code amongst the sculptures, and the deviant formal elements that is detected contradict conventions of art. It is established that the meeting between the viewer and the work of art is part of a democratic process.

<p>An analysis of Konstvägen Sju Älvar, an exhibition of modern Nordic sculpture along a road trough the wilderness of Northern Sweden. Konstvägen is a project for public art and contemporary art in northern Sweden. The intention is to see what happens when you exhibit art alongside a road and what function it fills. By comparing the qualities of Konstvägen to the qualities of a monument Konstvägen and it’s exhibitional functions are sought to be understood.</p>

Konst väcker något inom oss, en känsla av förundran, eufori, förvirring eller avsky för att nämna några. Somliga upplever en stark känsla att de måste uttrycka sig antingen positivt eller negativt om konstverket, främst det senare. Kanske rent av hävdar att konstverket inte bör existera i det offentliga rummet. Dessa känslor blir ofta grunden till en stor debatt vilket främst äger rum i media. Därav finns intresset att fundera över hur det kommer sig att vissa konstverk väcker sådana starka känslor och vad dessa konstverk egentligen skildrar. Offentlig konst kan ha varierande tillämpningar i samhället. Konstverket kan existera endast för det estetiska likt ett vackert landskapsmåleri, men det kan också ifrågasätta samhället och anses provocerande. Frågan kan då lyda om provocerande konst endast bör vara utställd på ett konstgalleri. Vilket är en plats du aktivt väljer att besöka och därav får vara beredd på att ställas inför konst som kan väcka känslor. Istället för att tvinga människor möta den provocerande konsten i det offentliga rummet. Av den anledningen behövs konst som för vissa kan uppfattas provocerande i våra gemensamma rum. För att nå ut till de som aktivt inte söker konsten, till de personer som verkligen behöver uppmärksammas. Det är viktigt att debatter tas upp i det offentliga rummet för att kunna observeras av alla. Konstnärerna kanske rent av gör samhället en stor tjänst. Det finns ett intresse hos mig att undersöka konst som väcker debatt och starka känslor hos individer. Undersöka vad konstverken skildrar och hur verken har mottagits av samhället i och med att de orsakat en debatt. Syftet med uppsatsen är att genom en analys av konstverketÖvermålning, både ikonografisk bildanalys och av meningsutbyte kring verket, nå en slutsats angående verkets uppseende, vad målningen väcker för känslor och tankar.

Specific examples of graffiti and related phenomena are presented. Within the Swedish anti-graffiti discourse the pejorative term klotter (scribbling) is used to describe what I above define as graffiti. A short analysis of this discourse is followed by case studies of specific examples of graffiti removal that can be regarded as iconoclasm.</p>
