East of the Sun. West of the Moon

Frogard, Michael 02 November 2017 (has links)

Near- to Far-Field Transformation for Arbitrarily-Shaped Rotationally-Symmetric Antenna Measurement Surfaces

Philipson, Joshua Benjamin Julius 12 November 2020 (has links)
The wireless industry is such that suppliers of antennas have to adapt their designs to requirement changes over a period of just a few months. In these short design cycles time is crucial. Radiation pattern testing of the antennas at various points in this design cycle are nowadays mostly done using spherical near-field techniques, where the tangential electric field is acquired over an imaginary sphere close to, and surrounding, the antenna under test, and this data then transformed into a far-zone radiation pattern. There are some applications where acquisition over a rotationally symmetric surface other than a spherical one would not only reduce test times, but allow equipment cost reductions as well. However, near-field to far-field transformations for finite non-spherical measurement surface shapes are not available. Such a transformation is proposed, implemented and validated in this thesis. It uses the method of moments, customized to a rotationally symmetric surface (body of revolution) to effect this transformation.

To IOT or not IOT : a critical analysis of the key legal considerations applicable in internet of things of implementations in the mining industry

Wessels, Carina Helena January 2016 (has links)
The research introduces the fourth industrial revolution philosophically, exploring the application of innovation and automation in broad terms and the Internet of Things (IoT) specifically within the mining industry. It explains the business and societal motivation for such interventions, highlighting some of the key benefits. It further explores the inadvertent risks, some of which have already manifested in mining applications and others which can be inferred from other industrial and social applications. A critical analysis is conducted of the application of the South African Mine Health and Safety Act and Regulations on such applications in the mining environment, as well as considering key other pieces of South African legislation. A comparative analysis with Australian legislation confirms that Western Australia has recognised the need for regulation and have started regulating, primarily mining automation, at least. Through these analyses it is established that a legislative vacuum exists, despite the general application of many requirements in relation to safety considerations during the utilisation of IoT applications. The paper concludes by recommending collaboration between the Department of Mineral Resources and the Chamber of Mines to seek ways to lead legislative and regulatory developments in this space in order to enable the sustainability of the South African mining industry. In particular, the research suggests the emphasis should be to legally encourage and permit the implementation of IoT solutions in the mining industry in as many instances as reasonably possible, whilst consecutively addressing the new and emerging risks created through such. / Mini Dissertation (LLM)--University of Pretoria, 2016. / Public Law / LLM / Unrestricted

Une fille du Parti : approche ethnologique du XXème siècle chinois à travers la biographie d’une femme pionnière / A daughter of the Party : ethnological approach to the Chinese XXth century through a young pioneer woman’s biography

Lecoq, Anne 02 April 2015 (has links)
This work deals with the life of an exceptional Chinese woman, Yuding, who was born in 1928 in China. It questions the way she has taken up totally paradoxical ways of life, kinship, and union, while living through incredibly uneven times - the beginning of the Republican era, the Second Sino-Japanese war, the civil war, the revolutionary era, the socialist society, and the current globalization. Yuding, presently 87, has kept faith in the venture proposed by the Maoist China, despite underlying wounds left by this violent period. Born in a leading family broken in to Confucian orthopraxy (rituality, morality, worship of the ancestors), Yuding then undergoes the influence of another “formatting” this of Maoism and its revolutionary doctrine. Very quickly, the traditional ideology of “filial devotion” passed on by her parents makes way for complete devotion to the Communist Party. Passionate activist from the Liberation, she leads an active life within the Women's Federation. French interpreter, she is brought round to traveling as much in Europe as in Africa, at a period during which very few persons were going out China. Yet, being an intellectual, she is sent to a labour camp “School of the Seventh of May” in 1968, but she doesn't lose her unquestioning adherence to the Party ideology. There soon won't be anybody from her generation, who was pioneer in the building of the People's Republic of China, to give accounts of this era. Her biography is a testimony of this exceptional experience.

Measuring Rural Revolutionary Mobilization: The Militiamen, Soldiers, and Minutemen of Fauquier County, Virginia 1775 - 1782

Fackrell, Jason 01 December 2018 (has links)
The story of the rural soldiers and militiamen of Virginia that served in the American Revolution remains open to historical research and exploration. Recent scholarship of Virginia’s military contribution to the Revolution focuses heavily on relationships of power among social groups that operated within the colony’s hierarchy, concluding that a lack of white, lower-class political and economic representation disabled mobilization among the Old Dominion’s more settled regions. My study emphasizes the revolutionary backcountry’s story by using Fauquier County, Virginia as a case study. A study of Rural Virginia during the Revolution presents scholars with significant challenges. Literacy rates among the general population were meager, meaning that Virginians in the backcountry left few letters and diaries for historians to interpret. Further complicating the reconstruction of Virginia’s rural revolutionary past were the destructive events of the nineteenth century. The tumults of the Civil War destroyed many Revolutionary War records of several Virginia counties, erasing much of what the Old Dominion’s revolutionary generation documented. For these reasons, Fauquier County represents an ideal subject of study. Court minutes, tax records, property records, and even a few letters and diary entries survived history’s fires to provide enough data from which to synthesize a social history to explore rural Virginia’s revolutionary story and mobilization patterns. The revolutionaries in Fauquier County were not always in concert with those throughout the rest of the colony. In contrast to most of Virginia, the county rallied enthusiastically to pre-Declaration calls for companies of minutemen. Hundreds of rural farmers from Fauquier across the socioeconomic spectrum served in the most successful of Virginia’s fleeting minute battalions known as the Culpeper Minutemen. These men defined themselves as backcountry Virginians against their more cosmopolitan peers from the longer-established eastern settlements. As the war matured and exacted its toll, however, fault lines between the local gentry and local yeomen widened, and the county settled into a recruiting pattern like most other Revolutionary Virginian counties. Understanding the issue of representation and its effect on how communities respond to a crisis remains a highly relevant topic that continues to challenge the public and its elected representatives to this day.
