Education as an Act of Self-Fulfilment : A Literary Analysis of Holocaust Narratives in the Light of Personal Development and Their Utilization in the EFL Classroom

Kapetanovic, Ena January 2017 (has links)
The aim of the present inquiry was to identify significant factors which had impact on the lives of Miriam Darvas and the protagonist Liesel Meminger, linked to the circumstances of the Holocaust in their respective narratives Farewell to Prague and The Book Thief. Through the investigation of the living conditions impacting the individuals, Maslow’s Theory of Motivation is applied in order to find the factors hindering the possibility for Miriam and Liesel to develop in their personal selves. Simultaneously, an educational aim followed the study in order to clarify the pedagogical possibilities of using the narratives in an EFL classroom.    The findings of the present inquiry indicate great similarities in the change of circumstances between Miriam and Liesel due to the war, which consequently impacted the individuals in their basis of developing their personal self. The results disclosed several instances in which the surroundings of Darvas and Meminger hindered their ability to develop and deprived them of the necessities needed, according to Maslow’s theory. However, they also disclosed indications of finding inner strength by self-improvement through education. Therefore, the findings from the present study supports an area of pedagogical possibilities using the narratives in the EFL classroom, such as enhancing the knowledge and understanding for the living conditions during the Holocaust, providing alternative reading suggestions to the commonly used Holocaust literature, as well as allowing collaborations between several subjects in high school.

Dejmalová, Lenka January 2017 (has links)
The aim of the thesis is to explore the first-year undergraduates' strategies of self-management. The thesis contains the theoretical and empirical part. The theoretical part deals with the transformation of higher education in Europe and in the Czech Republic followed by the changes in the university student career and lifestyle. Special attention is devoted to university socialization, the personality of the university student and their new roles. The next chapter of the theoretical part presents the concepts of personal management and academic self-management. The aim of the qualitative research is to explore and describe how the first-year students organize their study. Firstly, the content analysis of selected study plans was carried out and the orientation questionnaire survey was conducted among 165 first-year students at the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts, University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. Later, also other methods were applied: the diary of study week and electronic interviews. The data were analysed through open coding and thematic coding. Two basic types of students were distinguished based on the dominant out-of-class activities and the diversity of tendencies in independent...

Therefore this study set out with the aim to fill the gap in research on how to raise happiness and subjective well-being amongst adolescents. The sample of the study consisted of 90 students ranging from 16 - 19 years of age. They were randomly assigned to one of two methods; BPS (Best Personal Self) or nostalgia. Each group was then given varying instructions on a task they would perform on a daily basis, with tests taken on the first and last day of the study. The tests consisted of questions from the PANAS (Positive and Negative Affect Scale) and the SWLS (Satisfaction with Life Scale), which would determine the different methods short- and long-term effect on the participants happiness and subjective well-being. A control group was used to compare the results of the test groups. The results indicated nostalgia as being the most effective way to raise short-term well-being amongst adolescents, which raised interesting questions for future studies.

Hur påverkas självkänslan av arbetsidentiteten?

Karlsson, Samuel, Le, Tom January 2018 (has links)
The aim was to investigate how different types of work identity (personal/collective) predict two types of self-esteem (personal/organizational). A digital survey was sent out to different organizations within the public sector. The survey was based on four well established instruments, and were answered by 64 persons (age M = 39.1, SD = 12.5). In line with one of our hypothesis it was shown that collective compared to personal work identity in higher degree predicted organizational based self-esteem. There was also a weak tendency to significant result indicating that personal compared to collective work identity in higher degree predicted personal self-esteem. In sum, results are in line with previous research reporting that the way we see our self-worth is reflected by the way others think of us.

Autoconcepto Personal y Regulación Emocional en Role-players entre 18 y 35 años de Lima Metropolitana / Personal Self-Concept and Emotional Regulation in 18 to 35-years-old role-players from Lima

Llagas Ochoa, Marisol Katherin 25 January 2021 (has links)
The main objective of this study is to relate personal self-concept and emotional regulation in Peruvian adult role-players. The Personal Self-Concept Questionnaire (Goñi, 2011) and the ERQ Emotional Regulation Questionnaire (Gross y Jhon, 2003) were applied to a group of 310 Peruvian participants, between 18 and 35 years of age, and with 88% of sex female. It was found that the Personal Self-concept variables have a positive correlation with cognitive reappraisal, this being the most used regulation tool. Furthermore, there is a negative relationship with the dimension of emotional suppression. Likewise, role-players with an idol-kpop character have higher scores in personal self-concept, especially in autonomy and honesty, compared to furry role-players. / Tesis

Personne diminuée et personne à part entière : de la mise en oeuvre d'un agir distribué avec le patient atteint de déficience motrice dans un service de Médecine Physique et Réadaptation / Something less reduced person and full-fledged person : a distribued act with the impaired patient in a physical medecine and rehabilitation service

Bouton, Xavier 21 December 2017 (has links)
The doctoral thesis focuses on the assistance of functional impaired patients passing throug a personal self experience following a severe physical injury. It is based on an ethnographic inquiry, combining observations and interviews that have been conducted in two hospital services of Saint-Etienne’s UH. The first service is the functional rehabilitation recovery service and, for the major part, the other is the physical medecine and rehabilitation service. In presenting the « recapacitation » work of a person experimenting a new « non autonomous » body, the thesis explores relations between the medical professionals and patients, during the care and functional rehabilitation activities, but also the way in which relatives are included, in order to impact the perception of the handicap situation and to build collectively an acceptable life project after the hospital stay. This perspective reveals how to confront strong constraints of personal self experience by sharing words, this last become as a ressource to bring into the interactions and thus to engage the patient in an intrasubjective reappropriation of his body and an intersubjective continuity of his being. An important place is given to the hospitalization of quadriplegic patients, which is an extreme case and apart in the patient’s care in the physical medecine and rehabilitation service. The thesis presents a chronicle of a lived experience of these particular patients and thus shows the specificity of the process taken place in order to structure the experience of non autonomous body and to the one who has become dependent, and included in a collective composed of human actors  medical professionals, relatives  but also technical objects in which his act is distribued. The narrative takes into consideration the time and the moments experienced by these patients in this collective, during the care which can be counted by months and sometimes by years, by describing the ordinary activities in the rooms, those of the technical installations, those of professional’s meetings, finally and exceptionally a meeting’s structure where a group of former patients come with their spouses and a quadriplegic patient accompanied by his partner, to finalize the project of his return to an ordinary social environment.

Doeloriëntering en selfkonsep in spansport met besondere verwysing na skolerugby / Goal orientation and self-concept in teamsport with special reference to school rugby

Strydom, Lukas Albertus 10 1900 (has links)
The research investigated, in the literature and empirically, the possible relation between the goal orientation of male adolescent rugby players and their self-concept. The literature study indicated that goal orientation has two components, namely task involvement and ego involvement. In task-involved sport participation, skills development is emphasized, evaluation of achievement is self-referenced, and success experienced when learning takes place, a task is mastered, or when there is improvement in the execution of tasks. Success is attributed to effort. In ego-involved sport participation objective outcomes are emphasized (i.e. winning), evaluation of achievement is norm-based, and success experienced when own achievements are favourably compared to those of other sport participants. Success is attributed to natural ability. The empirical study indicated a positive relation between task-involved sport participation and the global, personal, and social self. A negative relation between ego-involved sport participation and the physical self, and a positive relation between ego involvement and competition-anxiety was found. / Educational Studies / M.Ed. Beyond cybernetics : connecting the professional and personal selves of the therapist

Marovic, Snezana 11 1900 (has links)
Text in English / This research explores the meaning of the first and second-order therapeutic stances with reference to the therapist's professional and personal development. The dominant positivist paradigm was reflected in the therapist's initial position of expert observer, outside of the observed. The observed phenomena were a group of children suffering from thalassemia major, a terminal genetic disease, and their mothers. The initial idea of short-term intervention and focus on the observed evolved into six-year journey where the observer and the observed became an interconnected unit of observation, understanding and change. A first-order stance led to therapeutic stuckness, where the therapist's confrontation with her therapeutic failure and the limitations of the dominant paradigm provoked a deconstruction of the expert position and promoted a self-reflexive therapeutic stance. The author's self-searching process took her back to her personal self, her family of origin and the ''wounded healer". The researcher moved from an initial disconnection between her professional and personal selves to an awareness of the interface between the two and, ultimately, to a unification of her professional and personal selves. Such development involved an individuation process moving from a narcissistic belief in her objective stance towards a therapeutic stance where she sees herself less as a powerful agent of change and moves to an increasingly higher order of integration of the professional and personal selves (Skovholt & Ronnestad, 1992). The process with the children and mothers shifted from a focus on compliance and medical issues to more personal and emotional stories. The therapist's participation and collaborative stance created a context for change, where greatly improved medical compliance was just one of the many transformations experienced by all the participants. The researcher speculates that development of a second-order stance requires second-order change, which comes "at the end of long, often frustrating mental and emotional labor" (Watzlawick et al., 1974, p. 23), promoting integration between the professional and personal selves of the therapist. The researcher therefore contends that this process has important implications for psychotherapy training, supervision and continuing education. / Psychology / D. Litt. et Phil. (Psychology)
