People with Dementia : A Qualitative Study Using Multimodal Interaction Analysis and Positioning Theory

Östenberg, Hanna January 2019 (has links)
An increasing number of people live with dementia or have a close relative who does so. Participation in social interactions is vital for sustaining quality of life and a feeling of self, value and identity in people with dementia. Dementia causes cognitive impairments that affect the person’s ability to communicate. Interactions in which people with dementia participate are influenced by the communicative difficulties that arise as a result of the disease, but also by the conversational partner’s view of the person with dementia. The present study investigates interactions involving people with dementia, focusing on how knowledging is manifested in the interaction, how people with dementia position themselves and are positioned by others as people with knowledge, and what effects this positioning has on the participation of people with dementia in social interactions. Knowledging is defined as the active making of knowledge through interpersonal interactions. The data consists of 30 hours of audio and video recordings of naturally occurring conversations in which people with dementia participate, from which 14 representative conversational examples were highlighted. Multimodal interaction analysis and positioning theory were used in the analysis. The analysis revealed that knowledge can be manifested in people with dementia through knowledging, a dynamic process in which knowledge is negotiated through conversation. Being positioned as knowing by others, as well as positioning oneself as knowing, seems to have a positive effect on the ability to express knowledge in people with dementia. People with dementia can therefore be involved in knowledging processes and the social situations that form the basis of knowledging. Some potential clinical and practical implications of promoting the participation of people with dementia in social interactions are suggested. Dementia changes the conditions for social interaction, but it is important to highlight each individual’s strengths and retained abilities and provide them with the conditions for participating in interactions and expressing their knowledge.

: Förskolpedagogers berättelser om skogens potential för barn med neuropsykiatriska funktionsvariationer / What opportunities and challenges do pre-schools encounter in the forest as a playing environment? : Pre-school educators’ narratives on the forest’s potential for children with neurodevelopmental disorders

Fellman, Paula January 2020 (has links)
The purpose of my study is to explore what opportunities and challenges the forest has as a play environment in preschool, with a focus on what potential the forest has for  children with neurodevelopmental disorders. The study is based on telephone interviews with preschool educators. In the result it shows that the forest has great potential for children with neurodevelopmental disorders. But that the right conditions are required, such as good relations with the children, competence and enough staff to be able to take advantage of the forest as a play environment in the preschool. The results also provide an insight into the complex work of being an educator, where parts of it is constantly being the problem solver. The results of the study, on the other hand, show that knowledge about forest is generally not needed because of being in nature provides a physical presence and a more natural way to explore for both the children and educators.

Communicating expectations during inclusive learning programme meetings with parents of children with down syndrome

Swanepoel, Hanlie January 2013 (has links)
The aim of the research undertaken was to answer the question “How do insights during Inclusive Learning Support Programme (ILSP) meetings between parents and teachers of children with Down syndrome (DS) inform mutual attainment of each groups' expectations?” Inclusive Education (IE) for the learner with DS was introduced informally during the early 1990s in South Africa within a few local schools in Pretoria. Transcribed interviews and observations were used from a sample of teachers and parents of children with DS conducted by the ILSP coordinator to collect data. They were analysed using Herman’s and Herman’s- Konopka's (2010) dialogical self theory, positioning theory and pronoun grammar analysis. Results showed there are two opposing tensions in education. One is a need for stability. This is offset by the dynamic nature of education practice with its many actors - learners, teachers, managerial and supervisory staff, support staff, institutions and government departments. Every actor interprets education according to their goals, subjective beliefs and understanding of what the education process is occupying a dominant position but working from a shadow position. IE brings its own set of tensions to the actors in education. Policy documents from government, as interpreted in schools in South Africa, express the need for stability in education. The study was limited to the constraints of the academic format. More accessible versions of the findings and recommendations can be developed in papers. For ILSP coordinators practically to have a promoter position in the dialogue between teachers and parents there is a need for them to become acutely aware of the positions they adopt in dialogue in themselves and with reference to others. The study has offered a new way of interpreting the expectations of both parties in the ILSP meetings and rendering a solution to the often frustrating outcomes. / Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / gm2014 / Educational Psychology / unrestricted

Algebra för matematiskt begåvade elever i årskurs 5 : En intervjustudie / Algebra for mathematically gifted students in 5th grade : An interview study

Johansson, Christoffer, Magnusson, Marcus January 2023 (has links)
According to the School Act, all students have the right to the guidance and stimulation they need to develop to the best of their abilities based on their individual conditions. For this reason, we want to investigate through this study how algebraic tasks and teaching within algebra can be adapted to provide mathematically gifted students with the challenge and stimulation they need to develop to the fullest extent possible. This has been examined by conducting a series of lessons consisting of three class sessions. After the lesson series concluded, semi-structured interviews were conducted in focus groups with the participating pupils to explore what is required for algebraic tasks and algebraic teaching to be perceived as challenging and stimulating by fifth-grade students. The theory used to analyze the results is positioning theory. The most important findings that have emerged are that these pupils should be offered the opportunity to work with challenging tasks, preferably by allowing them to work with these tasks in pairs/groups with other students at a similar level of knowledge.

Autobiografie v kontextu teorie pozicionality / Autobiography in the Context of the Positioning Theory

Soukupová, Klára January 2019 (has links)
Mgr. Klára Soukupová Autobiography in the Context of the Positioning Theory Abstract This doctoral thesis is a theoretical and an interpretative study that deals with the genre of autobiography, its position in the contemporary literary theory and problems related to an interpretation of autobiographical texts. Autobiography as a genre of non-fictional literature refers to real characters and events, but at the same time it is a literary work of art, a verbal construct in which the representation of reality is subject to the intentions of the author and to the rules of construction, that are close to the compositional techniques of fictional texts. The first part of the thesis concentrates on the theory of autobiography and its interdisciplinary context. It summarizes the development of theory of autobiography from the late 19th century to the present. Also, the concepts of the memory studies (especially the concept of collective memory) and the problem of distinguishing fiction and non-fiction (discussed in philosophy of history in 1970s and 1980s, fictional worlds theory, pragmatics of fiction, etc.) are taken into account. The theoretical chapter critically reflects P. Lejeune's definition of autobiography, based on the concept of the autobiographical pact. In relation with the problem of how to define...

Barns sociala vardagsliv i förskolan / Children’s everyday social life in preschool

Skånfors, Lovisa January 2013 (has links)
The overarching aim of the studies in this dissertation is to contribute knowledge about children’s shared social knowledge in their preschool peer cultures, regarding both content and how it is established and maintained. An ethnographic approach has been used to study the shared activities of children, aged 3-5, in the preschool. During 1 ½ years, one preschool setting was visited on a regular basis. One hundred hours of observation have been made and documented through video camera recordings and field notes. The theory of children’s peer cultures (Corsaro, 2005), positioning theory (Harré & Langenhove, 1999a) and social representation theory (Moscovici, 2001) have been used as theoretical tools in the analyses. The empirical results are presented in four articles (articles I-IV) and are all illustrations of the children’s shared social knowledge. The findings are that children’s shared social knowledge involves two main aspects of knowledge about relations; how to establish and maintain relations vis-à-vis various tokens or social resources (articles III and IV), and how to create distance to relations (articles I and II). Another find is that there seems to be a tension between the children’s social knowledge and the social norms explicitly formulated in the studied preschool context.

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the discursive practices of three teachers that have kept direct and indirect relationships with Information and Communication Technologies (ICT‟s) in the teaching-learning process. To accomplish with this purpose, we have adopted as theoretical framework the model of Digital Multiliteracies proposed by Selber (2004), which considers the multilayered dimensions of Digital Literacies and tries to explain them reasonably through three main levels of computer literacy: Functional Literacy, Critical Literacy, and Rhetorical Literacy. In addition, to better investigate the discursive practices of the teachers surveyed, we also have found support on Positioning Theory, according to which we provide discursive locations for ourselves and the others within a moral order that we establish during a symbolic exchange, building specific points of view inside the positions we take on (Harré and Van Langenhove, 1999). Methodologically, this research is structured as an ethnographic case study (André, 1995; Yin, 2001; Viégas, 2007) associated to a discourse (micro) analysis (Gee et al., 1992; Sacks et al., 1974, 2005; Davies and Harré, 1990). The context of this qualitative research is a public school pertaining to the municipal education system of Juiz de Fora – Minas Gerais. This school is located in a suburbian area of the city. The participants are three teachers that have kept direct and indirect relationships with ICT‟s in education, namely: the teacher of Educational Informatics, the teacher of a classroom (4th year of Brazilian elementary school) and the teacher responsible for the school library. To generate the data, we have used questionnaires, field notes, observation and semi-structured interviews. The corpus of this research consists mainly of the transcripts from interviews made with the participants. The results of this study point out that although the teachers have taken on favorable positions regarding the use of ICT‟s in education, their personal and professional experiences with such technologies tend to influence at different levels of commitment to the project of insertion of ICT‟s in the teaching-learning process. The data analysis also evinces a predominance of Functional Digital Literacy in the school investigated, which indicates the necessity for adoption of more critical perspectives regarding Digital Literacies in educational settings.
