Natural Resources Distance Learning Programs in The United States and China

This paper reviews the status of natural resources distance learning program in the United States and China and discusses the feasibility of educational cooperation between the two countries. By identifying and comparing computer-based learning programs offered at 300 American and 7 Chinese institutions of higher education, I found that only a small number of schools in both countries currently provide natural resources courses via distance learning. Although great opportunities exist for cooperation between the two countries, challenges must be overcome. Some of these challenges include expanding the existing distance learning curriculum to offer more natural resources courses, providing greater flexibility for faculty members who must adjust to a new teaching role, and improving the English proficiency of Chinese students for more effective international distance learning. / Master of Natural Resources

Understanding School Counselors' Ability to Implement School Counseling Activities Following Participation in Professional Training, Focusing on Adventure Based Counseling Training

A concern following school counselors participation in professional training is whether or not they are able to implement information learned. One such professional training that school counselors attend is Adventure Based Counseling (ABC). ABC groups are effective for addressing a myriad of concerns with young people. ABC groups address problem-solving skills, self-esteem, responsibility, goal setting, cooperation, and interpersonal skills. Although many school counselors have participated in ABC training, there is a lack of research that supports whether they are actually utilizing these techniques with their students. Additionally, current research does not provide information as to how training programs and school dynamics may be improved to allow for increased utilization of ABC with students; therefore, the purpose of this study is to understand the barriers that inhibit and the factors that support school counselors' ability to implement information learned from Professional Trainings, with a focus on ABC training. This qualitative study took a phenomenological approach, with a constructivist philosophical stance. Data sources included interviews with school counselors, which provided descriptions of their Professional and ABC training experiences and reasons for either using or not using Professional and ABC activities. The themes included What Professional and ABC training sessions school counselors attended and What they are implementing that they learned from these sessions. In addition, school counselors' various reactions to Professional and ABC training, such as Choice, Type of Delivery, Presenter Qualities, Time and Applicability were delineated. Results also included information pertaining to the Impact and Logistics of using information learned at Professional and ABC trainings. The results of this study may have important implications for school counselors, counselor educators, and administrators related to the implementation of skills learned from Professional and ABC training experiences. Implications for future research and limitations of this study are discussed.

Interaction of human-induced factors with natural hazards results in diverse uncertainties and risks among the built environment. Impacts of disaster events experienced in Turkey have revealed the vulnerability of the social, economic, and physical environments along with the various insufficiencies of awareness, legislation, practice and building inspection concepts. The shift towards risk-based disasters policy among the international agenda influences the national disaster policies and efforts. Parallel to this, it is expected from practicing architects to enhance their capacities through disaster risk-based professional training programs in order to develop disaster resilient built environments. Building Inspection System (BIS) is one of the important components of risk reduction approach which ensures the safety of built environment and occupants. The effective BIS has important gaps and deficiencies within the administrative, legal, and technical structures which results in failure of building production process in Turkey. Among the other problems, the main concern related to the ongoing BIS is its fragmented and missing risk-based understanding. The critical analysis indicates the deficient points of administrative and technical issues within the BIS conducted with the certification and professional training model which are not consistent with shifting comprehensive disasters policy and risk-based understanding in Turkey, and proposing a holistic and risk-based certification and training model for practicing architects in Turkey which focuses on disaster resilient built environment development through the comparison of some international best-practiced training model examples with Turkish context. The proposed professional training model has a three-step knowledge acquisition levels (awareness-detailed knowledge-advanced knowledge) which aims to approach to the architectural built environment problems, develop awareness, build-up knowledge and support practice through the holistic disaster risk reduction understanding, and in addition to attend on the complementary and supportive strategies (such as building and environment, building and material, structure and construction contexts) between related issues.

The Employment Demands for Female Immigrants in the Transnational Marriages in Kaohsiung County

Due to the prevalence of transnational marriages, the issues related to foreign spouses have become a focus of the government, a wide variety of related organizations, media and academia in Taiwan. Some people within these groups mentioned that the relevant issues were, in fact, over discussed. Actually, according to the statistics of the Ministry of the Interior, before the Interview System was established in 2004, transnational marriages were only 31.39% in 2003; most of the immigrants were foreign spouses (mainly females). The numbers were higher than those of foreign laborers, and even higher than the total numbers of aboriginal peoples. The foreign spouses have become the fourth group in Taiwan. As a result, studies on female immigrants are worthy of research. There has been less research concerning employment rights and demands, and in particular there¡¦s almost no quantification study. Because of the difficulties in determining vocabulary designed for the questionnaires and interviews with the foreign spouses, the employment demands can only be studied after receiving assistance from the related sections/departments of Kaohsiung County. The study aims to understand the professional trainings and employment demands of female immigrants as well as the remuneration, work hours and humiliation in Taiwan. Based on the collected literature reviews and the workshops on employment promotion, their work experiences and language preferences were understood. Surveys were carried out by 28 counselors of the Veterans Affairs Commission and the study subjects were foreign spouses in the 27 villages/townships of Kaohsiung County. Interviews were held at the Immigration Service Center of Kaohsiung County, and foreign spouses from China were excluded. 1180 questionnaires were sent and 932 were received. Valid questionnaires were 900. The study result shows that: there¡¦s significant influence of age, education level, number of children and husbands on the employment demands. 50% of the foreign spouses from China cannot write Chinese, the official language in Taiwan. Many of them have no knowledge that there are professional training and employment provided by the Service Center; there are no preferred training classes arranged by the Center in which they can participate, such as babysitter training. The present trainings were often merely cooking and housework courses. Regarding the humiliation their reaction is quite diverse; either it is absolutely agreed or disagreed with. Transportation is also a main problem. Almost all foreign spouses have a heavier workload in housework than the ordinary Taiwanese housewives. They work more than 8 hours a day and receive less remuneration. Proposals: (1) foreign spouses from China or Southeast Asia should be separated in the related researches; (2) foreign spouses from China should be differentiated between wife of veteran or non-veteran; the variation of their education level and age should be analyzed; (3) a Simplified Chinese should be designed for the foreign spouses from China; (4) try to avoid the humiliation; particularly the labor condition that is worse than the condition regulated in the Labor Law; (5) encourage enterprises to pick up the workers from home to the company in order to solve the problem of transportation; (6) open babysitter or nursing classes so that the care quality can be enhanced; if the related professional trainings can be continued, the lack of man power problem can be solved and (7) according to the Employment Services Act issued by the Ministry of the Interior that relates to courses lasting for 18 hours: the participants are mostly females at middle age or older; participating in courses is free of charge; and a living allowance can be applied for. But in the questionnaire, it indicated that a participating fee would be charged.

Darbo tikslas. Įvertinti Kauno miesto stacionarinių įstaigų reabilitacijos komandų specialistų pasitenkinimą darbu. Uždaviniai: Įvertinti reabilitacijos komandų specialistų pasitenkinimą darbu ir nustatyti su juo susijusius veiksnius, nustatyti reabilitacijos komandų specialistų profesinio tobulėjimo galimybes bei reabilitacijos specialistų komandos darbo ypatumus ir darbe iškylančias problemas Tyrimo metodika. Tyrimas buvo atliktas 2007 m. visuose Kauno m. reabilitacijos stacionaruose. Anoniminės apklausos būdu buvo apklausti 144 reabilitacijos komandų specialistai. Duomenų analizei apskaičiuoti imties požymių vidurkiai, standartinės paklaidos bei 95 proc. pasikliautinieji intervalai, Studento (t) kriterijus, dispersinė analizė (ANOVA), Spirmeno ranginės koreliacijos koeficientas. Rezultatai. 85,7 proc. apklaustųjų buvo patenkinti savo darbu. Pasitenkinimo darbu balų vidurkis - 4,2 (iš 5 galimų). 19,3 proc. respondentų norėtų keisti darbovietę ir tai susiję su jaunu respondentų amžiumi. Vyresnio amžiaus respondentai labiau patenkinti karjeros galimybėmis, pripažinimu, įstaigos politika bei darbu bendrai. Pasitenkinimas darbu susijęs su galimybėmis realizuoti savo sugebėjimus bei tobulėti, su atmosfera komandoje bei santykiais su tiesioginiu vadovu ir bendradarbiais. Respondentų požiūriu didžiausios reikšmės pasitenkinimui darbu turėjo – galimybė padėti žmonėms (78,5 proc. respondentų), santykiai su bendradarbiais (64,6 proc.), ir pati darbo esmė (59,7 proc.). Evaluate job satisfaction among specialists of rehabilitation teams and establish the factors associated with it; establish the possibilities of professional training among specialists of rehabilitation teams; and peculiarities as well as problems emerging at rehabilitation teams’ work. Methods. The research was carried out at all six in-patient rehabilitation institutions of Kaunas in 2007. Anonymous questionnaire survey was carried out with 144 specialists of rehabilitation teams. Sample means, 95% confidence intervals, Spearman rank correlation, Student (t) test, analysis of variance (ANOVA) were applied for the statistical analysis of the data. Results. 85.7% of specialists of rehabilitation teams were satisfied with their job. The average score of job satisfaction was 4.2 (from 5). 19.3% of respondents would like to change their job place, and it was related with the young age of the respondents. Esta tese teve como objetivo identificar como a Educação Física vem constituindo a sua formação a partir da implementação das Diretrizes Curriculares Nacionais e à luz das transformações contemporâneas das formas de ver, vivenciar, compreender e intervir sobre o corpo. A nossa hipótese é de que vem se conformando a existência de duas formações e dois profissionais distintos em Educação Física, mas com concepções semelhantes, influenciadas pelas transformações contemporâneas das formas de conceber e intervir sobre o corpo. Parte-se do pressuposto que tanto o processo de conformação e implementação das Diretrizes quanto as transformações contemporâneas produzem efeitos importantes no processo de formação e nas concepções que os egressos têm do seu trabalho. Inicialmente, então, contextualiza-se as Diretrizes Curriculares Nacionais na trajetória histórica da formação em Educação Física e na conjuntura educacional brasileira, inserindo-a no quadro de reformas da formação profissional de inspiração neoliberal implementadas no final da década de 90 e início dos anos 2000, e analisa-se o processo da sua elaboração e seus desdobramentos. Posteriormente, abordam-se as tramas que hegemonizam determinadas visões e formas de lidar com o corpo na sociedade contemporânea, caracterizando os atuais cultos à saúde perfeita, à boa forma e à performance. A investigação desenvolve-se nos cursos de Educação Física da Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), Universidade Estácio de Sá (UNESA) e Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF). Para levá-la adiante foram realizadas entrevistas com seis docentes de cada uma das universidades e analisados os projetos pedagógicos, as estruturas curriculares e ementas, além de outros documentos que contivessem informações sobre os cursos. As questões da entrevista foram elaboradas em torno de dois pontos principais: a formação em Educação Física na universidade após a reestruturação curricular provocada pelo novo arcabouço legal e as formas como o curso vem abordando as questões sobre o corpo. A análise dos dados centrou-se nos sentidos e significados instituídos pelos discursos sobre a formação em Educação Física e sobre o corpo circulantes nos documentos e nas falas dos entrevistados. The Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a behavioral syndrome whose indicative signs are already perceived in the early years of childhood. Considering the development as sensitive in particular to the early experiences of the child in the environment, early diagnosis and educational interventions are indicated consensus in the literature as catalysts of development in cases of ASD. There fore vocational training geared to the specific disorder that enables those responsible for this intervention is needed. From this, we elaborated this work in order to develop a program for training professionals in the fields of health and education for educational activities with people with ASD and evaluate its effectiveness. For that were identified through the literature review, which the knowledge necessary for teachers to work with students with ASD and from the systematization of this knowledge, built a curriculum for a training course aimed at professionals working in favor education of people with ASD. From the curriculum the study was conducted with a sample of eight professionals in the fields of health and education of a gaucho municipality. This was a survey applied quantitative and qualitative nature which offered and assessed the effectiveness of a training course for 30h with psychopedagogy, special educators, speech therapists and psychologists members of the Center for Specialized care in the city of Santiago/Rio Grande do Sul. The training included knowledge necessary for the care of people with ASD, including explanatory theories, characterization, evaluation of the syndrome, and intervention possibilities. The effectiveness of the course is evaluated both by module, as this as a whole, as well as maintaining knowledge and social validity formation was evaluated. The data coming from the realization of this study were submitted to content analysis and descriptive statistics. The main results was that the course was effective and that there have been important advances in knowledge and perception of participants regarding the person with ASD and, moreover, had a consistent impact in reality it was intended, considered as positive the validity social. / O Transtorno do Espectro do Autismo (TEA) é uma síndrome comportamental cujos sinais indicativos são percebidos já nos primeiros anos da infância. Considerando o desenvolvimento como sensível de modo especial às primeiras experiências da criança no ambiente, o diagnóstico e intervenções educacionais precoces são consensualmente indicadas na literatura como catalisadoras do desenvolvimento nos casos de TEA. Para tanto é necessária uma formação profissional voltada para as especificidades do transtorno que capacite àqueles responsáveis por essa intervenção. A partir disso, elaborou-se este trabalho com o objetivo de desenvolver um programa para formação de profissionais das áreas da saúde e educação para atuação educacional com pessoas com TEA e avaliar sua efetividade. Para tanto foram identificados, através da revisão da literatura, quais os saberes necessários aos professores para atuarem com alunos com TEA e, a partir da sistematização desses saberes, considerando que são traduzíveis à diferentes áreas, construiu-se uma matriz curricular de um curso de formação destinado a profissionais que atuam em prol da educação de pessoas com TEA. A partir da matriz curricular o estudo foi desenvolvido com uma amostra de oito profissionais das áreas da saúde e da educação de um município gaúcho. Tratou-se de uma pesquisa quanti-qualitativa de natureza aplicada que ofereceu e avaliou a efetividade de um curso de capacitação de 30h com psicopedagogos, educadores especiais, fonoaudiólogos e psicólogos integrantes do Núcleo de Atendimento Especializado da cidade de Santiago/Rio Grande do Sul. A formação contemplou conhecimentos necessários ao atendimento de pessoas com TEA, incluindo teorias explicativas, caracterização, avaliação da síndrome, além de possibilidades de intervenção. Foi avaliada a efetividade do curso tanto por módulo, quanto deste como um todo, assim como foi avaliada a manutenção do conhecimento e a contribuição da formação para os participantes. Os dados advindos da realização desse estudo foram submetidos à análise de conteúdo e estatística descritiva. Como resultados principais teve-se que o curso foi efetivo sendo que houve alterações importantes no conhecimento e percepção dos participantes em relação a pessoa com TEA e, além disso, teve um impacto consistente na realidade a que se destinava, sendo considerado positivo quanto a contribuição para o contexto de atuação dos participantes.

Dist?ncia de Gestores Escolares (Progest?o), tendo sido esse o ?nico programa de capacita??o de gestores escolares oferecido pela Secretaria de Estado de Educa??o de Minas Gerais (SEE/MG). N?o houve participa??o dos gestores em nenhum outro programa de capacita??o oficial ou extraoficial. Assim, est?o apresentadas, neste trabalho, a caracteriza??o do Progest?o, bem como as percep??es dos diretores quanto ao programa. Os entrevistados acreditam que a forma??o acad?mica individual, somada ? experi?ncia profissional, n?o ? suficiente para prepar?-los para o exerc?cio da gest?o escolar. Owing to the value of this function, a big responsibility is imputed to the school management and to the operation of the manager. Nevertheless, is observed that many times the school manager lies lacked of the needing qualification to exercise the activities of management, due the gaps of them own initial formation and the usual deficiency of their own process of technical capacitation, or the absence of this process. The professional training of the school managers is considerate, to the academics of the area, as fundamental condition to the implementation of the public policy and to reforms in the educational area. Thereby, in the sphere of this study, wonders how happens the professional training of the managers of the state schools of the city of Te?filo Otoni, located on the up-country of the state of Minas Gerais (MG). This research aims to analyze the professional training received by the school managers of the public network of education of the referred city. Therefore was elaborated a descriptive study, of qualitative nature, developed through a bibliographic research, documental and field, that involves the achievement of interviews of the half structured kind. The selected subjects to take part of the research was the principals of nine state schools, located in the urban area of the city and that concomitantly offers the levels of teaching that compose the basic education. The collected data were treated by the technic denominated content analysis. It was observed that the initial academic formation of the interviewed principals contributes little whit their acting as managers. The empiric capacity was describe by them as it gives more support to the manage activity. As the official professional training, five of seven interviewed participate of the ?Programa de Capacita??o a Dist?ncia para Gestores Escolares (Progest?o)?, this has been the only program of professional training of school management offered by the ?Secretaria de Estado de Educa??o de Minas Gerais? (SEE/MG). There wasn?t any participation of them in no other official or not official program of capacity. Therefore, is presented on this work the description of ?Progest?o?, and the perception of the principals of the programs. The interviewed believe that the individual academic formation, increased by the professional experience, is not enough to prepare them to the exercise of the school management. Therefore, it fomented a debate about the contribution of the professional training in the acting of the public manager in education.
