Misiorowska, Mariola 09 1900 (has links)
A large number of studies that examine the professional integration of immigrants have based their findings on immigrants’ participation in the labour market and their processes of integration. These studies often underscore the barriers that immigrants face. Few studies have focused on the strategies that immigrants exercise. Fewer studies, still, have focused on immigrants who have experienced, what we call, “successful integration”, especially from the view point of subjectivity. This thesis is situated in a micro-individual perspective. Its focus is on the actors themselves, that is, qualified new immigrant workers who are engaged in a process of integration in Québec. This study aims to more fully understand the trajectories of recent immigrants from the time they decided to immigrate until five to ten years after their arrival in Québec. In this light, I show how connections are forged between macro, meso, and micro determinants, which constantly interact to produce individual trajectories. This qualitative research is based on a clinical sociological approach, and it first analyses the trajectories of immigrants who are working in jobs that represent a minimal equivalence to their diplomas. The analysis is divided in three stages: immigrants’ lives before migration, their experiences of integration in Québec, and their current situation. In employing this approach, I chart connections between the individuals’ motives of immigration, their goals at the outset of their arrival, the strategies they engaged in and the level of satisfaction they experienced as a result. By endeavouring to gain a fuller understanding of these actors’ personal experiences, I distinguish their agency amid social determinants. The second research question explores the integration of actors in relation to their trajectories, as viewed by the actors’ themselves. Here, I examine the meanings of «successful integration» and «successful professional integration» as they are interpreted by the actors. In doing so, I observe the diversity of perspectives voiced by the immigrants without assuming beforehand expected results of their process of integration. The results show a myriad of expectations towards immigration and integration in a destination country like Canada, and particularly, the province of Québec. They invite us to consider the specificity of each actor. Processes of immigration and integration are embedded in larger personal undertakings, including the achievement of life goals. These goals can be situated on many levels and the process of their realisation serves as a guide for helping to achieve life goals that will be satisfactory, complete, and successful, according to the individual’s needs. This thesis illustrates the complex efforts that individuals engaged in order to achieve their projects and continue to pursue their self realisation. My research demonstrates the importance of making the subjectivity of actors centre-stage in an analysis of trajectories and integration. It will be especially useful in the conception of social programs, and contribute to better integrating the complexity of these processes. Ultimately, this study seeks to contribute to the «success» of individual experiences of immigration and integration.

This device is guaranteed by the Temporary Constitutional Provisions Act. This act is extremely relevant, so as it answers simultaneously to several purposes. It deals with a standard rule which establishes a substantive equality and social justice, it grants to these none economically self-sufficient communities the recognition of their territorial rights. It also demands to repair a historic nation s debt in Brazilian Slaves Communities of older and younger generations, who still suffer the effects of slavery. The way to achieve this definitive title it s bureaucratic and submit these Quilombos Communities to a enormous juridical insecurity. On this meaning the presented thesis has been developed by analyzing the protection intended for remaining Quilombos communities proprietorship until the reach of the definitive property invested by the Nation.

Assistência pré-natal por profissionais de enfermagem no município de Rio Branco - AC: contribuição para o estudo da atenção qualificada no ciclo grávido-puerperal / Prenatal care by nursing professionals in Rio Branco-AC: contribution to the study of qualified care in the pregnancy-puerperal cycle

Cunha, Margarida de Aquino 03 June 2008 (has links)
Every year, 120 million pregnancies occur around the world, in which more than half a million women die due to pregnancy or delivery complications and more than 50 million suffer from serious pregnancy-related diseases or disabilities. Various studies appoint that qualified prenatal care can significantly contribute to the reduction of these rates and to promote risk-free motherhood. Objectives: Identify and describe the profile of nursing professionals who participate in prenatal care and analyze the core competencies they develop in practice. Methodology: Descriptive study with a quantitative approach, carried out at 03 Health Centers (HC) and 13 Family Health Units (FHU) in Rio Branco-Acre. The study population consisted of 23 nursing professionals (15 nurses, 02 nurse midwives, 04 nursing technicians and 02 nursing auxiliaries). Data were collected through interviews, as well as systematic and non-participant observation of core competencies in obstetrics. Sixty-one prenatal consultations, 57 pre-consultations and 03 puerperal consultations were observed. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the variables. Results: the interviewed professionals are mostly female (91.30%), with a mean age of 34.3 years; 69.6% are married; 60.87% have six years of professional training, with a mean prenatal care experience of 54.1 months; the mean weekly hour load is 53.26 hours and 52.17% work in more than one institution. At the HC, nursing technicians and auxiliaries are responsible for pre-consultations, but mostly (84.62%) nurses at the FHU. Nurses perform prenatal and puerperal consultations in the two care models. Among the nurses who perform prenatal consultations, only 02 (11.76%) had taken a specialization course in obstetrics, while the remainder (88.24%) received prenatal care training for between 24 and 40 hours. The large majority of the core competencies expected in prenatal care, in this study, was developed, although frequency levels for some were low. The most frequently performed actions and procedures were: BP measurement, weight and height measurement, initial history, fetal heart beat listening, uterine height measurement and request for laboratory exams, while the least frequent were: assessment of nutritional state, clinical breast exam, abdominal palpation to verify fetal position and presentation. Health education activities were not performed. Conclusions: the results revealed that, despite the nurses\' good performance, the need for investment in qualified staff training needs to be assessed for care to women in the pregnancy-puerperal cycle, and the incorporation of protocols that translate evidence-based standards into obstetric practice needs to be encouraged.

Modernização e mobilidade do trabalho: migrantes qualificados como tecnocratas do Estado em Porto Velho, Rondônia (1990 a 2012) / Modernization and labor mobility: migrant qualified as technocrats of the state in Porto Velho, Rondônia (1990 -2010)

Teles, Luciana de Jesus Sá 11 February 2015 (has links)
In this research, we will be looking at a specific kind of a migration that exists in Brazil nowadays, critically analyzing the movements of social groups associated with the current \"development of Brazilian capitalism. The purpose was to study migrant workers with higher education who migrated to the city of Porto Velho, State of Rondônia, between the years 1990 and 2012 and have remained there. We look forward to understanding the influence of these workers on the redefinition of the social dynamics of society that had welcomed them. The capital of the state of Rondônia, Porto Velho, hosted many workers in the public and private sectors in this process. The intensity of this migration was what first awaken interest of this research. The flow of skilled workers demanded to occupy the positions required for installation of public organs, politics implementation and execution of projects also drew attention to the phenomenon and the inclination to study on the subject. To illustrate the importance and the speed of this recent institutionalization , which mean the inclusion of Rondônia along the lines of capitalist modernization , emphasizes the creation and restructuring of a wide range of agencies , projects and federal government programs that have attracted skilled labors migrants ( who are the focus of this research ) and assist us to expose this question. The overall goal is to determine how the formation of immigrant groups, in the so-called Brazilian middle class, is characterized. In addition, how this is the materialization of a corresponding social identity already established in other parts of the country, in which the state has already been implemented. We believe that this middle class, embodied in bureaucracy and technocracy, contributed to the performance in a systematic way skilled migrants / expertise in the implementation of state institutions, enabling the reproduction of the capitalist form of social, economic and political, development in Rondônia.

Perceived Teacher Self-Efficacy in Early Childhood Settings: Differences between Early Childhood and Elementary Education Candidates.

Billheimer, Bradley Carroll 06 May 2006 (has links)
This study examined the degree of perceived teacher self-efficacy between early childhood preservice teachers and elementary education pre-service teachers. There were 88 participants: 44 elementary education pre-service teachers and 40 early childhood pre-service teachers. Participants were mostly white, female pre-service teachers enrolled at East Tennessee State University. Using Bandura's 30-item "Teacher Self-Efficacy Scale" pre-service teachers rated their perceived self-efficacy on 7 subscales: decision-making, influence on school resources, instructional efficacy, disciplinary efficacy, enlisting parent involvement, enlisting community involvement, and creating a positive school climate. Significant differences were found between groups for 3 of the 7 subscales. Early childhood education pre-service teachers reflected higher levels of efficacy in influencing decision making, t(86)=3.36, p<.001; enlisting parental involvement, t(86)= 2.14, p < .05; and creating a positive school climate, t(86) = 3.01, p < .01. No significant differences between groups were found in overall perceived teacher self-efficacy, t(86)=1.44, n.s.

Quality of worklife for rural and remote teachers : perspectives of novice, interstate and overseas-qualified teachers

Sharplin, Elaine Denise January 2008 (has links)
[Truncated abstract] It is essential to attract, recruit and retain quality teachers in rural and remote schools for provision of quality education to rural and remote students. A robust body of research confirms that teacher quality contributes to quality of education (Darling-Hammond, 2000; Hay McBer, 2000; Kaplan & Owings, 2002; OECD, 2002; Ramsay, 2000). Staffing histories of rural and remote schools identify persistent difficulties in recruiting and retaining teachers, but previous research has failed to address the experiences and perspectives of rural and remote teachers from the earliest phases of appointment, tracking their experiences over time. In times and places of persistent teacher shortages, teacher quality of worklife issues are paramount. Factors impacting on teacher quality of worklife may impact on teacher retention, staffing levels and ultimately the quality of education for children. For these reasons, this study aimed to develop substantive theory about the experiences of teachers commencing appointments in rural and remote schools by investigating the perspectives of novice, interstate and overseas-qualified teachers. The study sought to develop understandings of rural and remote teachers quality of worklife. In order to achieve this aime, the experiences of 29 teachers were examined, in four categories of teachers likely to be appointed to rural and remote locations: young novices; mature-aged novices; interstate; and overseas-qualified teachers in a qualitative collective case study. ... Awareness of the variety of factors in multiple environments, and the complex interplay between them, helps to account for the diversity of perspectives and quality of worklife outcomes for rural and remote teachers. Two theories were generated from ten propositions. The first theory, Quality of Worklife for Rural and Remote Teachers: Person-Environment Fit to Multiple Environments, identified protective and risk factors associated with workrole, workplace, organisation, geographic and socio-cultural community environments. The theory recognises spillover between work and non-work life experiences, impacting on quality of teacher worklife; however, factors directly associated with worklife impacted most significantly on quality of worklife. The second theory, Processes of Adaptation to Multiple Rural and Remote Environments, identified processes (teacher expectations, evaluations of environments, responses to environments) and coping strategies (direct-action, palliative and avoidant) as leading to one of four outcomes: integration; resilient integration; disequilibrium; and withdrawal. The case study findings offer original understandings of experiences of teachers newly appointed to rural and remote schools, through the development of theory about multiple environments teachers encounter and processes of adaptation associated with their relocation to rural and remote areas. The findings have implications for theory, policy and practice, and contribute new dimensions to the general quality of worklife literature.
