Investigations of the Crust and Upper Mantle of Modern and Ancient Subduction Zones, using Pn Tomography and Seismic Receiver FunctionsGans, Christine January 2011 (has links)
Advances in seismology allow us to obtain "high-resolution" images of the Earth's subsurface. This dissertation summarizes the results of three seismic studies on three different continents, with the aim of better understanding the crust and upper mantle structure of seemingly disparate yet ultimately related regions. The seismic techniques of Pn tomography and P-wave receiver function (RF) analysis are applied to central Turkey (Pn tomography), western Argentina and southwestern Wyoming, USA (RF analysis). These studies look at both a present-day convergent margin (Andean subduction zone, Argentina) and two ancient ones (Bitlis-Zagros collision zone of Arabia-Africa with Eurasia, Turkey; Farallon subduction zone, Wyoming).Using Pn tomography, we were able to detect the limit of the slab rupture edge along the Central Anatolian Fault Zone, Turkey. Slab break-off is an important process that modifies the mantle in tectonically active regions, and the limit of the oceanic Arabian slab break-off along the Bitlis-Zagros Suture Zone, thought to have begun at 11 Ma, was previously undetermined.Using RF analysis, we obtained high-resolution images of the subducting slab beneath the Sierras Pampeanas, Argentina. Continental Moho contours roughly follow terrane boundaries, suggesting that ancient terranes continue to exert control over present-day continental deformation. Overthickened oceanic crust is often cited as a cause of flat slab subduction; our RF results indicate that the crust is moderately overthickened, around 11-16 km. Further, we image offsets in the RF arrivals that indicate the subducted slab is broken or offset in along trench-subparallel fractures.The crustal structure beneath southwestern Wyoming, the location of ancient Farallon flat slab subduction, was studied using RF analysis. Looking at regional crustal structure, results include a new depth to Moho map. Coherency of the seismic signal across the dense LaBarge array (55 stations, ~250 m spacing) was investigated, with results showing that complicated shallow structure can greatly impact the resulting RF signal. Modeling of RFs using synthetics helped to separate the complex signal containing multiple primary conversions and their reverberations, which interact constructively and destructively. The dense spacing of the LaBarge array allowed unique opportunities to investigate coherency of waveforms across very short distances.

This thesis presents the thermodynamic and economic assessment of gas power cycles for 100 MW solar thermal power generation systems. A gas power cycle for solar power generation is a totally different technology from the current state of the art solar power generation systems. As a result, this thesis provides an assessment of the solar power generation systems with gas power cycles and provides guidance in the selection of design and operating parameters for gas power cycle based solar power generation system. The gas power cycle based power generation systems are assessed by means of thermodynamic and economic models developed and simulated using commercial thermodynamic analysis software. The gas cycle based power generation systems considered in this study are Cold Gas Turbine, High Temperature Solar Gas Turbine and Lorentz Cycle Gas Turbine. The system models are assessed for their thermodynamic performance using theory based turbo-machinery models with practical performance and loss data. In addition, extensive cost models have been developed for assessing the economic performance of the system models to determine their practical feasibility. The results from this study indicate that the most economical power generation system is the HTSGT system for a high peak cycle temperature utilizing the central receiver power tower solar collector system. The LCGT system also has a comparable performance at the same operating temperature. The CGT system assessed for operating with parabolic trough solar collector system at a lower peak cycle temperature had an inferior performance compared to the current state of the art technology for the power generation using parabolic troughs.

High temperature durability of metals for use in a particle heating receiver for concentrated solar powerKnott, Ryan Christopher 12 January 2015 (has links)
An experimental investigation is presented on a novel High Temperature Falling Particle Receiver for Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) to quantify the extent of erosion of the receiver structural materials by the flowing particulate matter. The current receiver design uses a series of metal wire mesh screens to slow down the particulate flow through the receiver in order to increase their residence time thereby achieving the desired temperature rise within the receiver without the need for particulate recirculation. The solid particulates are gravity fed through the receiver where they absorb the incident thermal energy before flowing to a high temperature storage bin upstream of a heat exchanger where the heat stored in the particulate material is transferred to the working fluid for the power cycle. To assess the effective life of the receiver, this experimental investigation is undertaken. This thesis includes the development of an apparatus to test wire meshes under high temperature and particle abrasion conditions, and the presentation and analysis of these results.

Development of coherent detector technologies for sub-millimetre wave astronomy observationsTan, Boon Kok January 2012 (has links)
Superconductor-Insulator-Superconductor (SIS) mixers are now used regularly in sub- millimetre astronomical receivers. They have already achieved sensitivity approaching the quantum limit at frequencies below the superconducting gap of niobium (~680 GHz). Above that, the mixer performance is compromised by losses, unless materials with higher superconducting gap are employed in conjunction with the niobium tunnel junction. In this thesis, we present the development of 700 GHz niobium SIS mixers, employing a unilateral finline taper on a thin Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) substrate. These mixers are broadband with full on-chip planar circuit integration, and require only a very simple mixer block. They were designed using rigorous 3-D electromagnetic simulator (HFSS), in conjunction with a quantum mixing software package (SuperMix), and have demonstrated good performance with the best noise temperature measured at 143 K. Our mixer devices were fed by multiple flare angle smooth-walled horns, which are easy to fabricated, yet retain the high performance of corrugated horns. The radiation patterns measured from 600–740 GHz have shown good beam circularity, low sidelobe and cross-polarization levels. In this thesis, we also present SIS mixer designs with balanced and sideband separ- ating capability. These mixers employ back-to-back finline tapers, so that the RF and local oscillator (LO) signals can be injected separately without a beam splitter. We have fabricated and tested the performance of the balanced mixers, and analysed their performance thoroughly. We have also investigated a new method of generating LO signals by beating the tones of two infrared lasers. Using the current 16-pixel 350 GHz SIS receiver, HARP-B, we have observed the <sup>12</sup>CO J=3→2 emission lines from two nearby galaxies. An important result we found is that the <sup>12</sup>CO J=3→2 correlates strongly with the 8 μm Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon emission.

Este trabalho apresenta uma ferramenta para a simulação de sistemas de comunicação utilizando modelos em alto nível para cada um dos blocos empregados. A ferramenta é baseada em modelos comportamentais de blocos de Radio Freqüência (RF), o que reduz custos, tempo de simulação e permite um rápido diagnóstico de problemas precoces no projeto de um sistema de comunicação sem fio. O desenvolvimento de blocos, como o LNA (Low Noise Amplifier), o MIXER, o LO (Oscillator Local) e o PA (Power Amplifier), facilita a implementação de qualquer arquitetura de Transmissão e de Recepção. Para isso foram levados em consideração efeitos de ruído, não linearidade e ganho no modelo dos blocos. Com isto se espera que a ferramenta ajude no projeto de circuitos integrados de um sistema de blocos em cascata, onde o usuário possa selecionar, configurar e simular o sistema. Na utilização da ferramenta é indispensável um conhecimento prévio das características e especificações em nível de sistema. Assim, se poderão fazer mudanças nos parâmetros de blocos, que permitirá então analisar compromissos existentes entre ruído, ganho e distorção do sinal através de todo o caminho, antes mesmo de se ter uma resposta definitiva. A ferramenta de simulação é implementada em Simulink, que é um pacote (toolbox) de Matlab, amplamente utilizado no desenvolvimento de algoritmos e blocos de comunicação. A interação e ambiente gráfico da ferramenta facilitam o uso pelas pessoas envolvidas direta e indiretamente com o projeto de circuitos. The tool is based on behavioral models of Radio Frequency (RF) blocks, which minimize cost, simulation time and allows a fast determination of problems in the early phases of the design of a Wireless Communication System. The development of blocks like the LNA (Low Noise Amplifier), the MIXER, the LO (Local Oscillator) and the PA (Power Amplifier), helps to implement any architecture for transmission and reception. For that, the effects of noise, non-linearity and gain in the behavioral model of the blocks were considered. With this, it is expected that the tool will help the design of integrated circuits of a system with cascade blocks, where the user can select, set up and simulate the system. In order to use the tool, previous knowledge of the characteristics and specifications of the system is necessary. In this way, it will be possible to change the parameters of blocks, allowing the analysis of tradeoffs between noise, gain and distortion of the signal through the system, before having a definite answer. The tool is implemented in Simulink, which is a toolbox of Matlab, normally used in the development of communication blocks and algorithms. The graphic environment of the tool allows a straightforward use for people involved directly or indirectly with the Circuit Design. Finally, in order to verify the developed tool, a case study was performed where the Bluetooth standard was modeled and simulated.

In the medical science, the receiving operationg characteristic (ROC) curve is a graphical representation to evaluate the accuracy of a medical diagnostic test for any cut-off point. The area under the ROC curve (AUC) is an overall performance measure for a diagnostic test. There are two parts in this dissertation. In the first part, we study the properties of bi-Exponentiated Weibull models. FIrst, we derive a general moment formula for single Exponentiated Weibull models. Then we move on to derive the precise formula of AUC and study the maximus likelihood estimation (MLE) of the AUC. Finally, we obtain the asymptotoc distribution of the estimated AUC. Simulation studies are used to check the performance of MLE of AUC under the moderate sample sizes. The ever-growing need for high speed data transmission is driven by multimedia and telecommunication demands. Traditional metallic media, such as copper coaxial cable, prove to be a limiting factor for high speed communications. Fiber optic methods provide a feasible solution that lacks the limitations of metallic mediums, including low bandwidth, cross talk caused by magnetic induction, and susceptibility to static and RF interferences. The first scientists to work with fibers optics started in 1970. One of the early challenges they faced was to produce glass fiber that was pure enough to be equal in performance with copper based media. Since then, the technology has advanced tremendously in terms of performance, quality, and consistency. The advancement of fiber optic communication has met its limits, not in the purity of its fiber media used to guide the data-modulated light wave, but in the conversion back and forth between electric signals to light. A high speed optic receiver must be used to convert the incident light into electrical signals. This thesis describes the design of a 2.5 GHz Optoelectronic Amplifier, the front end of an optic receiver. The discussion includes a survey of feasible topologies and an assessment of circuit techniques to enhance performance. The amplifier was designed and realized in a TSMC 0.18 µm CMOS process.

Vertical motions at the fringes of the Icelandic plumeSchoonman, Charlotte Maria January 2017 (has links)
The Icelandic mantle plume has had a profound influence on the development of the North Atlantic region over its 64 Myr existence. Long-wavelength free-air gravity anomalies and full waveform tomographic studies suggest that the planform of the plume is highly irregular, with up to five fingers of hot asthenosphere radiating away from Iceland beneath the lithospheric plates. Two of these fingers extend beneath the British Isles and southern Scandinavia, where departures from crustal isostatic equilibrium and anomalous uplift have been identified. In this study, the spatial extent of present-day dynamic support associated with the Icelandic plume is investigated using receiver function analysis. Teleseismic events recorded at nine temporary and 59 permanent broadband, three-component seismometer stations are used to calculate 3864 P-to-S crustal receiver functions. The amplitude and arrival time of particular converted phases are assessed, and H-k stacking is applied to estimate bulk crustal properties. Sub-selections of receiver functions are jointly inverted with Rayleigh wave dispersion data to obtain crustal VS profiles at each station. Both inverse- and guided forward modelling techniques are employed, as well as a Bayesian, trans-dimensional algorithm. Moho depths thus obtained are combined with seismic wide-angle and deep reflection data to produce a comprehensive crustal thickness map of northwestern Europe. Moho depth is found to decrease from southeast (37 km) to northwest (26 km) in the British Isles and from northeast (46 km) to southwest (29 km) in Scandinavia, and does not positively correlate with surface elevation. Using an empirical relationship, crustal shear wave velocity profiles are converted to density profiles. Isostatic balances are then used to estimate residual topography at each station, taking into account these novel constraints on crustal density. Areas of significant residual topography are found in the northwestern British Isles (1400 m), southwestern Scandinavia (464 m) and Denmark (620 m), with convective support from the Icelandic plume as its most likely source. Finally, the irregular planform of the Icelandic plume is proposed to be a manifestation of radial viscous fingering due to a Saffman-Taylor instability. This fluid dynamical phenomenon occurs when less viscous fluid is injected into a layer of more viscous fluid. By comparing the thermal and convective characteristics of the plume with experimental and theoretical results, it is shown that viscous fingering could well explain the present-day distribution of plume material.

Idag väljer allt fler butiker att starta en webbshop och på så vis nå ut till fler kunder samt marknadsföra sig på ett enkelt vis. Eftersom konsumenter söker och jämför produkter via Internet är det viktigt att företag och deras erbjudande är tillgängliga även där och inte försvinner i det brus som uppstår på marknaden på grund av exempelvis konkurrenter. Syftet med vårt arbete är att undersöka, analysera samt diskutera hur en mindre klädbutik påverkas av att både driva en butik och en webbshop samt även vilka fördelar som kan utnyttjas. Vi har intervjuat tre företag som har fått svara på ett antal frågor om hur det är att driva en webbshop. Vi valde att intervjua mindre butiker som använder sig av webbshop som ett komplement, för att se hur det påverkar företaget. Dessutom har vi skickat ut en webbenkät där konsumenterna fått besvara ett antal frågor om deras shoppingvanor på Internet. Det var relevant för oss att undersöka både företagens och konsumenternas syn på näthandel, för att få en så rättvis bild som möjligt av hur det ser ut i verkligheten. Utifrån våra undersökningar tillsammans med vår teoretiska referensram har vi kommit fram till att en hemsida med webbshop är ett bra sätt att marknadsföra sig på och nå ut till potentiella kunder. Det visade sig också att kunder flera gånger i veckan besöker en webbshop och handlar någon eller några gånger i månaden. Från företagens perspektiv har vi fått reda på att det är en kostsam process att driva näthandel. Det kräver mycket tid och energi för ständigt hålla sidan uppdaterad. Today, more and more stores choose to start an online shop and thus reach more customers and market themselves in a simple way. As consumers search and compare products thru the Internet, it is important that companies and their offer is also available there and not lost in the noise that occurs in the market because of such competitors. The aim of our work is to investigate, analyze, and discuss how a small clothing shop is influenced by both operate a retail store and an online store as well as the benefits that can be utilized. We interviewed three companies that have been asked a number of questions about how it is to run a shop. We chose to interview smaller shops that use web shop as a supplement, to see how it affects the company. In addition, we sent out an online survey in which consumers had to answer a number of questions about their shopping habits on the Internet. It was appropriate for us to examine both the business and consumer views on e-commerce, to get as fair a picture as possible of how it looks in reality. Based on our studies, together with our theoretical framework, we have concluded that a website with online shop is a great way to market themselves and reach out to potential customers. It was also found that customers several times a week visiting a web shop and is one or a few times a month. From the corporate perspective, we have learned that it is a costly process to drive online sales.
