Problemformulering och syfte: Tidigare forskning inom typografi och typsnitt har fokuserat på dess läsbarhet, läslighet och igenkänning och har helt ignorerat typografi som ett kommunikativt meningsskapande verktyg. Ett typsnitts meningsskapande funktion är av relevans både för formgivare men också för personer som på något sätt arbetar med text och ord. Syftet med undersökningen är att förklara hur typografi och typsnitt är en del i en meningsskapande process med utgångspunkt i ett representationsteoretiskt perspektiv. Studien är ett fall av hur typografi kan fungera som en kulturell meningsskapande resurs inom förpackningsdesign. Metod och material: Studiens fyra kvalitativa metoder är informantintervjuer, semiotisk analys, experimentell metod och fokusgrupper. Informantintervjuerna utfördes för att få underlag till den experimentella metoden som i sin tur analyserades i två steg, dels genom en denotativ semiotiska analys, och dels konnotativt genom fokusgrupperna. Huvudresultat: Studiens huvudresultat visar att typsnitt har en meningsskapande funktion och att typsnittens anatomiska egenskaper samt kontext påverkar betydelsen.

Studiens syfte är att undersöka hur homosexualitet skildras i svensk TV-reklam. Detta med anledning av mediers möjligheter till att påverka publiken samt utifrån heteronormen i samhället. För att uppfylla målet med studien har ett par frågeställningar formulerats: “Vilka diskursiva teman framkommer i resultatet och vad säger de om framställningen av homosexualitet i TV-reklam?” och “Skiljer sig framställningen av homosexualitet från framställningen av heterosexualitet och i så fall hur?”. Sex olika reklamfilmer som har visats i svensk TV under olika perioder mellan år 2012-2016 har analyserats. Studiens teoretiska ramverk utgörs av representationsteori, queerteori samt multimodal kritisk diskursanalys, förkortat MCDA. Analysarbetet grundas på MCDA som metod. Olika analysbegrepp inom metoden har använts för att utforma ett analysschema som möjliggjort analysen av materialet. Studiens resultat har delats upp i fem olika diskursiva teman. De teman som framkommit är heterosexualitet som norm, handling som bygger på homosexualitet, bred representation, homosexualitet lämnas okommenterat och frånvaro av stereotyper. Den främsta slutsatsen i studien är att heteronormen genomsyrar TV-reklam där homosexualitet framställs. Utöver detta visar studiens teman på att det inte finns några specifika stereotyper av homosexuella personer i reklamfilmerna, att homosexualitet i vissa fall används som något centralt i reklamfilmen och något som för handlingen framåt. Det förekommer även reklamfilmer när homosexualitet gestaltas, men lämnas helt okommenterat.

Faculty of Humanities, School of Education, Master of Education Dissertation / This dissertation analyses assumptions about citizenship education in Malawi since the reintroduction of multiparty democracy in 1993 and reveals a minimalist conception of citizenship. It asserts that Malawi’s historical and traditional context require concerted efforts towards participatory citizenship if democracy is to be strengthened and protected. Central to the discussion are conceptual distinctions between minimal and maximal citizenship alongside a discussion of concepts of freedom, human rights and development, which can be attributed to minimal and maximal conceptions of citizenship. The dissertation argues that deliberative and participatory forms of democracy, with their parallel notions of contestatory and republican freedoms and rights, are more attuned to creating an active and strong citizenship while at the same time developing a positive relationship between democratic participation and participation in local and national development, a relationship which representative approaches in Malawi seemingly disavow.

Uppsatsen tar avstamp i debatten om en eventuell kanon-lista hade främjat elevers läsförståelse och känsla av samhörighet genom gemensamma referenspunkter i kulturen. Studien undersöker genom ett postkolonialt perspektiv representationen i ett par antologier utgivna för svenskundervisning på gymnasiet för att urskilja hur den globala representationen ser ut i läromedlen som redan finns tillgängliga i landets skolor.  Resultatet visar att svenska och europeiska författare är klar majoritet i läromedlen. De gemensamma referenspunkter som redan finns att tillgå på marknaden i form av läromedel förmedlar således ett västerländskt och europeiskt perspektiv. Flera författare och litterära verk återkommer i ett par av antologierna och detta kan tyda på att det redan finns en outtalad litterär kanonlista i den svenskundervisningen på gymnasiet.

Syftet med denna studie är att ur ett genusperspektiv undersöka representationen av kvinnliga elinstallatörer i ett urval branschtidningar från år 2012 och 2018 samt att ta reda på hur man skulle kunna locka fler tjejer till branschen. Arbetsdelning bestående av könssegregering har alltid existerat på arbetsmarknaden. Det medför att några yrken är dominerade av män medan det finns andra yrken där kvinnor framträder starkast. I dag är elektriker ett av Sveriges mest mansdominerade yrken. Endast två procent av landets elektriker är kvinnor. Andelen kvinnliga elinstallatörer är dock mycket lägre, inte ens en halv procent av de elinstallatörer som är aktiva i Sverige idag är kvinnor. I FN:s globala mål för hållbar utveckling utgör ökad jämställdhet det femte målet och menar att jämställdhet mellan kvinnor och män är en förutsättning för en hållbar och fredlig utveckling. I Sverige används medier i snitt sex timmar per dag. Media har blivit en naturlig del av vår vardag och formar vår syn på vår omvärld men också oss själva. De skildringar av människor som ses i medierna idag är ofta stereotypa vilket bidrar till att förutfattade meningar om kvinnor och män återskapas och förstärks. För att få bukt med de inrotade vanföreställningarna mot kvinnlig arbetskraft på ’manliga’ arbetsområden bör det utövas mer upplysningsverksamhet och propaganda. Baserat på data från kvantitativ innehållsanalys, intervju, surveyundersökning och visuell research undersöker denna studie hur representationen av kvinnor ser ut i ett urval branschtidningar, vilka faktorer som påverkar valet av gymnasieutbildning samt hur visuell kommunikation skulle kunna bidra till att fler tjejer väljer tekniska utbildningar. Med genusperspektiv och jämställdhet som analysverktyg skapas potential att finna relevanta hinder och därmed frambringa förklaring till orsakerna. Studien visar att elbranschen är kraftigt mansdominerad. Statistik visar att representationen i branschtidningar och informationsmaterial även där domineras av män. Ett genomgående ämne som tas upp flertal gånger från de deltagande i surveyundersökningen är bristen på bra visuell kommunikation. De anser att kvinnor bör synliggöras i bransch och skolor.

This thesis examines cultural variations in time perception, as well as the possible influences on mental representation and decisions. Building on prior research on cultural differences in time-related perceptions, two main time perceptions were identified and focused on, namely temporal orientation and the use of time metaphor. The temporal orientation line of investigation explores the implications of a stronger future versus past orientation among English and Mandarin-speakers respectively. Based on Construal Level Theory, temporal orientation is expected to be related to psychological distance, which in turn affects the mental representations individuals form. The findings supported a stronger future orientation among English-speakers which is also evident in their mental representations that vary as a function of temporal orientation. However, Mandarin-speakers exhibited neither a strong past nor future orientation. A study examining the possible influence of temporal orientation on value judgment revealed a complex association between culture and value judgment. The time metaphor line of inquiry investigates the use of time metaphors among English and Mandarin-speakers and also the possible implications of such tendencies. Although previous psychological research implies a possible connection between the use of time metaphor and sense of personal control, this relationship is yet to be established. The findings showed supportive evidence of a frequent use of ego and time-moving metaphors among English and Mandarin-speakers respectively. However, studies examining the relationship between the use of time metaphor, perceived personal control, and decisions (optimism bias and risk-taking) revealed little supportive evidence of an association between them. The findings and a range of methodological and theoretical implications are discussed in the closing chapter.

This thesis explores the automatic extraction of musical information from live performances - with the intention of using that information to create novel, responsive and adaptive performance tools for musicians. We focus specifically on two forms of musical analysis - harmonic analysis and beat tracking. We present two harmonic analysis algorithms - specifically we present a novel chroma vector analysis technique which we later use as the input for a chord recognition algorithm. We also present a real-time beat tracker, based upon an extension of state of the art non-causal models, that is computationally efficient and capable of strong performance compared to other models. Furthermore, through a modular study of several beat tracking algorithms we attempt to establish methods to improve beat tracking and apply these lessons to our model. Building upon this work, we show that these analyses can be combined to create a beat-synchronous musical representation, with harmonic information segmented at the level of the beat. We present a number of ways of calculating these representations and discuss their relative merits. We proceed by introducing a technique, which we call Performance Following, for recognising repeated patterns in live musical performances. Through examining the real-time beat-synchronous musical representation, this technique makes predictions of future harmonic content in musical performances with no prior knowledge in the form of a score. Finally, we present a number of potential applications for live performances that incorporate the real-time musical analysis techniques outlined previously. The applications presented include audio effects informed by beat tracking, a technique for synchronising video to a live performance, the use of harmonic information to control visual displays and an automatic accompaniment system based upon our performance following technique.

Despite advances in image, video, and motion capture technologies, human interactions are frequently represented as line drawings. Intuitively, drawings provide a useful way of filtering complex, dynamic sequences to produce concise representations of interaction. They also make it possible to represent phenomena such as topic spaces, that do not have a concrete physical manifestation. However, the processes involved in producing these drawings, the advantages and limitations of line drawings as representations, and the implications of drawing as an analytic method have not previously been investigated. This thesis explores the use of drawings to represent human interaction and is informed by the prior experience and abilities of the investigator as a practising visual artist. It begins by discussing the drawing process and how it has been used to capture human activities. Key drawing techniques are identified and tested against an excerpt from an interaction between architects. A series of new drawings are constructed to depict one scene from this interaction, highlighting the contrasts between each drawing technique and their impact on the way shared spaces are represented. A second series of original drawings are produced exploring new ways of representing these spaces, leading to a proposal for a field-based approach that combines gesture paths, fields, and human figures to create a richer analytic representation. A protocol for using this approach to analyse video in practice is developed and evaluated though a sequence of three participatory workshops for researchers in human interaction. The results suggest that the field based process of drawing facilitates the production of spatially enriched graphical representations of qualitative spaces. The thesis concludes that the use of drawing to explore non-metric approaches to shared interactional space, has implications for research in human interaction, interaction design, clinical psychology, anthropology, and discourse analysis, and will find form in new new approaches to contemporary artistic practice.

This thesis examines the role of historical reference in the representation of homosexuality in British literature since the late nineteenth century. The texts it examines are both literal fictions - novels, short stories and poems - and less 'imaginative' forms, such as biography, historiography and sexology: its main project is to disentangle the network of discourses facilitating and restricting representation of the homosexual past. It identifies the history of this representation as a series of moments - the turn of the century, the 1930s, the 1950s, for example - when homosexuality was redefined, and lesbian and gay traditions correspondingly reinvented. This continual reinvention was often the work of homosexuals themselves:the thesis demonstrates how historical representation has allowed lesbians and gay men to intervene in sexual debate when more obviously 'contemporary' dissident voices were being publicly silenced. Chapters I and 2 examine the invocation of historical example within the late Victorian homophile subculture, and argue that the ancient Greek practice of paiderastia provided tum-of-the-century homosexuals with an affirmative model with which to counter juridical and sexological prescription. Chapters 3 and 4 consider the extent to which Antinous and Sappho became established in the same period as homosexual icons, but were subtly reconstructed by different, sometimes competing, sexual discourses. Subsequent chapters explore the influence of literary models such as Radclyffe Hall's The Well ofLoneliness (1928) upon lesbian historical fiction and biography of the 1930s, and uncover some hitherto forgotten lesbian texts; examine the role of male homosexuality in the women's historical romance of the 1950s; and discuss the homoerotic historical fiction of lesbian authors Mary Renault and Bryher. The final chapter considers recent lesbian and gay historical fiction, and finds reflected in the genre the modem homosexual self-image with all its gender and racial tensions.
