Sippert, Luciane January 2017 (has links)
The present thesis has as a general objective analyze the textual progression and thematic structure in reviews produced by students in Higher Education, based on the theoretical assumptions of Systemic Functional Linguistics (HALLIDAY, 1978; HALLIDAY and MATTHIESSEN, 2004, 2014; MARTIN and ROSE , 2007; ROSE and MARTIN, 2012) allied to Textual Linguistics, supported by the referential studies, in a socio-interactionist perspective. (MONDADA, 2001; MONDADA and DUBOIS, 2003; MARCUSCHI, 1983 and 2008; KOCH et al.,2005; KOCH and ELIAS, 2010; KOCH, 2014; CAVALCANTE, 2011, 2012 and 2013; CAVALCANTE et al., 2014; and CIULLA, 2008). What motivated this study were the difficulties faced by students, when they produced texts with academic rigor demand, and the interest to understand how the study of the processes of referential and thematic organization and can support the work with academic writing. For this, the data were analyzed from the textual metafunction, considering four contextual strata that involve the text: the context of culture and its realization in genres, the context of situation across the variables of field, tenor and mode, the semantic-discursive stratum through the analysis of the discursive systems of identification and periodicity, and of the processes of reference, in order to observe how the students build textual progression the textual discourse functions, which are more used in the composition of review genre; and finally, the lexicogrammatical stratum analyzed through the identification of the thematic structure and information structure. This is a qualitative-interpretative study The investigation subjects were students of the Universidade Estadual do Rio Grande do Sul (UERGS), attending the first semester at undergraduate level. The corpus is constituted by 10 (ten) texts of the review genre. The results show that the patterns of thematic structure are directly related to the composition of the genres and to the knowledge that the students have in relation to the lexicogrammar, to the semantic-discursive and structural aspects of the text. The analysis of the discursive-semantic stratum allowed us to look at the textual metafunction and to understand how the process of textual progression occurs, from the processes of thematic progression and referential progression. For the types of references and thematic structure present in the texts, it can be concluded that the students are aware of these strategies of textual construction, however it is evident the necessity to become this knowledge explicit, in such a way that their productions develop in terms of discursive qualities. In conclusion, as a contribution of this thesis, it is hoped to awaken the interest for the approached topic, as well as to offer theoretical and practical subsidies for the planning of intervention proposals in the academic context, constituting an important tool for working with writing and textual/discursive analysis in Higher Education.

Juan Natalicio González (1897-1966): um intelectual plural / Juan Natalicio González (1897-1966): an plural intellectual

Marcela Cristina Quinteros 04 November 2016 (has links)
This thesis seeks to identify the main intellectual and political objectives of Juan Natalicio González (1897-1966), a Paraguayan writer who played an extensive variety of activities (journalist, essayist, editor, politician, Colorado Partys member and diplomatic). From the analysis of their biographies, their own texts (autobiography, essays and magazine Guarania) and the study done by historians we consider that Gonzalez partially achieved his political ambitions, because he became president of his country but he was deposed and did not return to play a leading role in the national political scene. He succeeded in spreading and consolidation of the revisionist interpretation of Paraguayan history, after participating in various groups of Latin American intellectuals who widely reproduced his version of the history.

Hamaue, Priscila 16 August 2010 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-03-15T19:45:11Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Priscila Hamaue.pdf: 591103 bytes, checksum: f3b1bdfbdf87b1bf3ea4bceb37fa91e0 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-08-16 / This paper analyzes the use of nominal referential expressions in the speech of Bento Santiago, a character from the book ―Dom Casmurro‖, by Machado de Assis, used to characterize characters and situations of the romance. Within the referential context (cf. MONDADA; DUBOIS, 1995, 2003), it is intended to show how the referential expressions may contribute to the subjective orientation of a speech, full of ambiguities and intentions. This analysis is within the Textual Linguistics, which considers the text, above all, a social interaction activity. It is specifically based on referential studies understood as speech objects building. The body of the research is comprised of excerpts from referred work. The conclusive results point to the fact that the choices of the referential expressions made by the narrator Bento Santiago significantly contribute to the full achievement of a speech project that aims at persuading the reader concerning the facts and characters that are part of his life.

Les notions de temps et d'espace dans l'ecriture styronienne : la faille temporelle de l'existence / The notions of time and space in Styronian writing : the temporal gap of existence

Lainé-Forrest, Eléonore 06 May 2009 (has links)
This work examines the way Styronian writing highlights the temporal gap of existence. Using the mode of analysis defined by narratology, it begins by studying the variations of time and space that are created by Styronian analepses. Then, it shows how those variations allow the reader to go beyond the referential illusion of the story to discover the operative universe of the Styronian narrative. Finally, it reveals how the latter is constructed on the ever-changing dramas staged in the theatre of human experience. Then, referring to the theories of psychoanalysis and more particularly of Lacanian psychoanalysis, this work explores how Styronian novels disclose the temporal aporia in which man evolves. It also shows the way they describe the effect of this aporia, the Other in man, then man himself often preferring to ignore the Name-of-the-Father so as not to hear the primordial law of existence. The last part of this research examines the way Styronian novels enter the field of history. It starts by highlighting the ternary movement that both the historical narrative and the fictional narrative of William Styron adopt to construct themselves, and shows that the latter proceeds from a work of significance and not of “representance”. Then, it analyses how William Styron describes men preferring memorization to re-memorization thus creating oblivion in their souls. To conclude, it reveals the part this author offers fictional writing to play as a remedy for historical oblivion as well as for its destructive consequences.

Kommunikationseffektivitet och kommunikationsstrategier för L1- och L2-talare i referentiella problemlösningsuppgifter / Communication effciency and communicative strategies for L1 and L2-speakers in referential communication tasks

Solberg, Jon January 2004 (has links)
<p>This thesis examines and measures differences in effciency between L1- and L2 language use for solving referential problems. Quantitative measures used in the study were time and error frequency. Qualitative measures, such as how the tasks and the participants own performance were experienced, were measured by an post interview and two questionaires. </p><p>Two different tasks, a sorting task and a construction task, in which each informant was given the role as a constructor or instructor, were used for data gathering. A total of 20 dyads, divided in two language groups (English and Swedish) participated in the study. </p><p>The results show large differences between the two language groups in respect to time for solving the two tasks. For the construction task, these were mainly due to different communication strategies used for error handling. In the sorting task a clear learning effect can be observed for the L2-groups which, in effect, makes the L2 users solve the sorting task almost as fast as the L1 groups, after an initial learning period. However, the informants in the L2 groups generally referred to the objects used in this task by describing peripheral characteristics of these objects. They also showed more signs of uncertainty and hesitation in the actual dialogue situation. However, no differences in error frequency could be found between the two language groups. </p><p>Differences in role-taking between the language groups were also made apparent in the study. These differences became especially clear for the L2 groups in the construction task.</p>

The Nepotistic Parent; Predator Protection, Kinship and Philopatry

Griesser, Michael January 2003 (has links)
<p>Evolution is fuelled by independent reproduction events. Yet, the offspring of at least three percent of all bird species postpone dispersal and forego independent reproduction. The Siberian jay, <i>Perisoreus infaustus, </i>is such a species where some<i> </i>offspring are philopatric and remain in their natal territory for up to three years, forming family groups. The main finding of this thesis is that nepotistic anti-predator behaviour displayed by parents provided philopatric offspring benefits, which could be an incentive to stay and forego independent reproduction. Predation, (hawks - 80 % and owls - 15% of deaths observed) is the main cause of mortality. Parents increased their vigilance nepotistically; they were more vigilant against surprise predator attacks, and gave alarm calls when attacked when feeding together with offspring. However, the two parents differed in their behaviour. Mothers gave calls only when together with their offspring, while males also warned unrelated immigrants. Sitting predators were approached and mobbed more intensely by parents in the presence of philopatric offspring. The vocalisation of Siberian jays provides information about predation risk. Specific calls are given for hawks and owls, and calls also varied with hawk behaviour. The nepotistic anti-predator behaviour of parents is a benefit, which the offspring can gain only “at home”, and such behaviour appears to promote offspring to forego dispersal and independent reproduction. This was confirmed in an experimental manipulation; philopatric offspring dispersed when fathers were removed and replaced by a despotic, immigrant stepfather. From a life-history perspective, parents have an incentive to protect their reproductive investment. Nepotistic anti-predator behaviour create a safe haven in the natal territory for philopatric offspring and provides direct fitness benefits. Without such direct fitness benefits offspring may disperse and wait for a breeding opening elsewhere. </p>

Large-scale semi-supervised learning for natural language processing

Bergsma, Shane A 11 1900 (has links)
Natural Language Processing (NLP) develops computational approaches to processing language data. Supervised machine learning has become the dominant methodology of modern NLP. The performance of a supervised NLP system crucially depends on the amount of data available for training. In the standard supervised framework, if a sequence of words was not encountered in the training set, the system can only guess at its label at test time. The cost of producing labeled training examples is a bottleneck for current NLP technology. On the other hand, a vast quantity of unlabeled data is freely available. This dissertation proposes effective, efficient, versatile methodologies for 1) extracting useful information from very large (potentially web-scale) volumes of unlabeled data and 2) combining such information with standard supervised machine learning for NLP. We demonstrate novel ways to exploit unlabeled data, we scale these approaches to make use of all the text on the web, and we show improvements on a variety of challenging NLP tasks. This combination of learning from both labeled and unlabeled data is often referred to as semi-supervised learning. Although lacking manually-provided labels, the statistics of unlabeled patterns can often distinguish the correct label for an ambiguous test instance. In the first part of this dissertation, we propose to use the counts of unlabeled patterns as features in supervised classifiers, with these classifiers trained on varying amounts of labeled data. We propose a general approach for integrating information from multiple, overlapping sequences of context for lexical disambiguation problems. We also show how standard machine learning algorithms can be modified to incorporate a particular kind of prior knowledge: knowledge of effective weightings for count-based features. We also evaluate performance within and across domains for two generation and two analysis tasks, assessing the impact of combining web-scale counts with conventional features. In the second part of this dissertation, rather than using the aggregate statistics as features, we propose to use them to generate labeled training examples. By automatically labeling a large number of examples, we can train powerful discriminative models, leveraging fine-grained features of input words.
