The Journey Home: A Root-metaphor Analysis of the 1840 Mormon Manchester Hymn Book

Arrington, James N. 22 February 2006 (has links) (PDF)
In 1840, apostle missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints compiled, printed, and began distributing a hymnbook that eventually would become the basis for all subsequent LDS hymnbooks published in English in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This thesis, as a contribution to the literature of communication, book history, and hymnology, as well as the intellectual and cultural history of the early years of the LDS Church, focuses on analyzing the poetry of the 1840 Mormon Manchester hymnbook. Using qualitative root-metaphor analysis, the author identified and analyzed expressions, supporting an emergent journey root-metaphor. He then divided the expressions into eight categories, each describing important and distinct aspects of the Journey. These categories include the following: 1) the travelers, 2) the activities on the journey, 3) the way, 4) the destination, 5) the guide, 6) the invitation to come, 7) the motivations, and 8) the lost wanderers. This thesis is based on the assumption that cultures and religions can be understood through the stories they tell. The story of the journey as told through the poetry of the 1840 Manchester hymnbook illuminates one aspect of the religious experience of early members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Taken together, the eight aspects of the journey root-metaphor identified in this thesis tell a story about LDS members as travelers on a journey home, who walk on a straight and narrow path, away from a dark and fallen world, through snares, darkness, and other dangers, toward a glorious destination where rest, joy, and other rewards await them. Ultimately the travelers must rise above this world and follow Christ to a place where they may live with God to serve and praise him ever more.

Liturgiese musiek as kommunikatiewe handeling in 'n post-moderne era

Kloppers, Elizabeth Catharina 11 1900 (has links)
Worldwide liturgical music finds itself in a crisis. Liturgical music is made the scapegoat for everything that is wrong with liturgy, whereas the problems rather derive from the worship service as a whole, the theological thinking and the cultural environment in which the worship service is performed. Stereotyped liturgical forms, a cognitive verbalism, the demand for intelligibility, the loss of the poetic form of the liturgy, the disregard for symbols and rituals, the absence of visual and other art forms in the liturgy, the influence of the popular music culture and especially the lack of a profound theological reflection with regard to the essential place of music in the liturgy, are all contributing factors that have a negative influence on liturgical music. The worship service is surrounded by a postmodern culture, aspects of which might provide positive opportunities for the liturgy. A broader notion of rationality that includes the affective, non-cognitive dimensions of being human, opens up possibilities for the aesthetic, as well as the religious experience. The recognition of symbols, images, imagination and metaphors opens up new horizons for the worship service as Gesamtkunstwerk. Anti-foundationalistic thinking demands an open canon with regard to the liturgy and liturgical song. Ecumenicity as an expression of the postmodern 'global village' renders a plurality of liturgical and musical possibilities. Aspects that might influence the reception of liturgical songs and songbooks, such as a spirit of anti-authoritarianism must be borne in mind. The liturgical training of ministers of religion, especially with regard to their aesthetic formation must be given due attention. The reflection on liturgy with regard to the role of art and music as communicative acts, based on new theological insights, must come into full swing. Liturgical music can only be fully appreciated where liturgical renewal takes form in a comprehensive way and where theologically the space is opened up for music as a form of art that has the ability to communicate symbolically, especially that which defies clearcut definition - as such being a communicative act serving the gospel. / Liturgiese musiek verkeer wereldwyd in 'n krisis. / Philosophy, Practical & Systematic Theology / D. Dimenze výtvarného umění ve školní výuce náboženství / The Dimensions of Visual Art in the School Religious Education

IŇOVÁ, Veronika January 2012 (has links)
This work deals with the search for the possibility of fine art with the world of religions, which appears in their common language of symbols and figurative expression. These facts may subsequently be placed in religious education. Basic theoretical definition of these disciplines is devoted to the first chapter, which also suggests the principles that determine the further procedure. The second chapter is a reflection of the interdisciplinary cooperation of the social sciences, that the phenomena of religion and the arts review from their different sectoral aspects. This is in particular on the following areas: anthropology, sociology, psychology and theology. On the experience of art and religious experience, and their mutual context deals with the third chapter. In the fourth chapter of this work devoted to the question of the symbol, its potential use in religion and the arts, and also a treatise on the character in fine art and the metaphor in biblical texts. This unit is concluded by an evaluation of individual methods that can be applied when working with image in religious education. They are: Didactics of correlation, didactics of the symbol, the didactics of biblical text and an image or the interpretation of the symbol, which are supplemented by the new program "Philosophy for children". These didactic and methodological theory have been applied in the modeling design for possible application in the teaching of religion.

In this thesis a study of Mircea Eliade’s History of Religions is presented carried through on three different approaches: the epistemological approach, the methodological approach and the categorical approach. In the first Chapter of this thesis, it is claimed that Eliade’s History of Religions constitutes an autonomous and integral discipline, with proper object of study – the religious phenomenon in its specific plan of reference, the religious plan - and with proper method of work – a unitary historical-phenomenological-hermeneutic method -; that such discipline turns around two axles – the phenomenology of religion stricto sensu and the history of religions -; that, in its all, the eliadian History of Religions has the statute of an existential phenomenology of religion placing itself in the branch of Philosophy. In the second Chapter of this thesis, it is discoursed on the only implicit method in the eliadian workmanship, which takes in account the historical aspect of the religious phenomenon and which conjugates phenomenology and hermeneutics, developing itself in two plans: the first plan is that of the phenomenological-descriptive analysis of the religious phenomenon carried through on the field of the phenomenology of religion stricto sensu, in which the Rumanian author conforms his morphology of the Sacred; the second plan is that of the hermeneutic-philosophical analysis of the historical religious phenomena in which the cited author proceeds to the interpretation of the religious phenomena historically happened for the elaboration of his history of religions; Eliade also use the hermeneutic-philosophical analysis of the religious symbolisms for the accomplishment of a philosophical hermeneutics of the religious symbols by means of which he formulates normative judgments on the human being condition. In the third Chapter of this work, a study of the main categories of the eliadian thought is developed with emphasis for the hierophany, the dialectic of the hierophany, the dialectic of the Sacred and the Profane, the Sacred, the religion, the religious experience, the sacred space, time and history, homo religiosus, the modern Occidental man of the secularized societies, the archetype, the archetype of coincidentia oppositorum, images and symbols, the non-historicity of the of religious life, the religious symbol, the religious symbolism, the Myth, the Rite, the Camouflage and the Occultation of the Sacred in the Profane, the unrecognizableness of the Sacred in History (or the unrecognizableness of miracle), and the Sacred in the modern secularized Occidental world.

Exploring the Johannine spirituality: the experience of God in the fourth Gospel perceived from the perspective of its Familia Dei

Albalaa, Pierre Youssef 08 1900 (has links)
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 292-313) : illustrations / This thesis examines the Experience of God in the Fourth Gospel (in this research, it is also called the Johannine Experience of God) by perceiving it from the perspective of the metaphoric Familia Dei, found in this Gospel. This examination is done in a three-step process: The first step consists of a literary review and a presentation of the methodology and approach employed in this research. It intends to set the thesis within the Johannine studies. The second step involves the articulation of essential considerations on Religious Experience, the Johannine Community, and the Fourth Gospel. This articulation has two aims: First, to acquire a deeper understanding of the background of the Johannine Experience of God, and second, to point out the functionality of this Gospel’s narrative in constituting this experience. The third step comprises the following suggestion and the elaboration on its constituents: - The Johannine Experience of God consists of two components: the first one is the initiative of God the Father conveyed by Jesus Christ, perpetuated by the Holy Spirit, and as it is recorded in the Fourth Gospel. And the second one is the response of the believers (John’s readers) to this initiative by accepting the Son and journeying spiritually under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. - The Johannine Experience of God can be perceived from the perspective of the Familia Dei metaphoric found in the Fourth Gospel. - The narrative of the Fourth Gospel has the ability to constitute an experience of God and accordingly creates spirituality, once it is read or heard. This thesis aims to generate a deeper understanding of the spirituality of the Fourth Gospel at one level, and to offer an acceptable general insight about the Johannine Spirituality at another, hoping that its findings become an inspiration for future studies. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / D. Uncanny modalities in post-1970s Scottish fiction : realism, disruption, tradition

Syme, Neil January 2014 (has links)
This thesis addresses critical conceptions of Scottish literary development in the twentieth-century which inscribe realism as both the authenticating tradition and necessary telos of modern Scottish writing. To this end I identify and explore a Scottish ‘counter-tradition’ of modern uncanny fiction. Drawing critical attention to techniques of modal disruption in the works of a number of post-1970s Scottish writers gives cause to reconsider that realist teleology while positing a range of other continuities and tensions across modern Scottish literary history. The thesis initially defines the critical context for the project, considering how realism has come to be regarded as a medium of national literary representation. I go on to explore techniques of modal disruption and uncanny in texts by five Scottish writers, contesting ways in which habitual recourse to the realist tradition has obscured important aspects of their work. Chapter One investigates Ali Smith’s reimagining of ‘the uncanny guest’. While this trope has been employed by earlier Scottish writers, Smith redesigns it as part of a wider interrogation of the hyperreal twenty-first-century. Chapter Two considers two texts by James Robertson, each of which, I argue, invokes uncanny techniques familiar to readers of James Hogg and Robert Louis Stevenson in a way intended specifically to suggest concepts of national continuity and literary inheritance. Chapter Three argues that James Kelman’s political stance necessitates modal disruption as a means of relating intimate individual experience. Re-envisaging Kelman as a writer of the uncanny makes his central assimilation into the teleology of Scottish realism untenable, complicating the way his work has been positioned in the Scottish canon. Chapter Four analyses A.L. Kennedy’s So I Am Glad, delineating a similarity in the processes of repetition which result in both uncanny effects and the phenomenon of tradition, leading to Kennedy’s identification of an uncanny dimension in the concept of national tradition itself. Chapter Five considers the work of Alan Warner, in which the uncanny appears as an unsettling sense of significance embedded within the banal everyday, reflecting an existentialism which reaches beyond the national. In this way, I argue that habitual recourse to an inscribed realist tradition tends to obscure the range, complexity and instability of the realist techniques employed by the writers at issue, demonstrating how national continuities can be productively accommodated within wider, pluralistic analytical approaches.
