Waiting room group in the intensive care unit: the reception of the family by nurse / Grupo sala de espera na unidade de terapia intensiva: acolhimento dos familiares pela enfermeira

DÃbora de AraÃjo Moreira 19 December 2011 (has links)
CoordenaÃÃo de AperfeiÃoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior / The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a local in the hospital for receiving patients with injuries to life, whether clinical or surgical. During the time of admission of patients, their relatives have exalted feelings of anxiety, fears and doubts arising from separation and imminent risk of loss of their relative. Own rules and routines of the ICU, the restricted access of family in the unity and the unknowledge of the environment can exacerbate fear about functioning, care and interventions provided. This study aimed to: Develop a waiting room group to welcome family members of ICU patients as a strategy for humanization of assistance; Describe the stages of group process in the family host; analyze the group approach as a tool in the host of family of ICU patients. Qualitative research, descriptive and exploratory methodological, based in the âGroup process for nursesâ proposed by Maxine Looms (1979). The study was performed in the waiting room of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in a public hospital located in Fortaleza-CearÃ, Brazil. During the period from June to September 2011, the study respondents were family members who had relatives admitted into Intensive Care Unit. The inclusion of family members was conditional on signing the consent form. In the first stage, we made 37 individual interviews to know family needs about having a family member in the ICU. In the intervention phase with waiting room groups we had on average 20 visitors per day. The individual evaluation phase of these groups was performed with 26 relatives. The results showed that the family members need information of health status and diagnosis of their patient and this information should be clear and with less technical language. Professionals should be respectful and truthful when the information is provided. The groups were conducted following systematic guidelines and explaining the ICU routines. In the end we held orientations of questions of the group itself. In the evaluation of the groups found that the family felt welcomed and attended carefully to the proposed activities. The guidelines regarding handwashing and the possibility to talk / touch the patient were identified in speeches as relevant topics covered in the group. The information received on these activities generated change in the behavior of the family at the time of visit. The host is a strategy referenced successfully in serving families. The study showed that the performance of an educational group in the waiting room of the ICU, coordinated by nurses, can reduce unknownledge and anxiety of family members during the visit, not only to the patient, the nature and causes of disease, but also risks related to therapy. As well as encourage and motivate families to cope with the pain of hospitalization of their relative, thus helping to reduce the distress and suffering of all involved. Health promotion in the tertiary level, with the participation of the family becomes effective and concrete the Humanization of the hospital, with the expansion of its care and scientific knowledge, in addition to inpatient and techniques implemented them.

Organization and Retention in Research Groups in Graduate Engineering Departments

Crede, Erin Dawne 02 November 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this research project was to better understand the experiences of graduate students in internationally diverse research groups, and how these research groups and international diversity contributes to a student's intent to complete his or her graduate degree. This exploratory mixed methods research was conducted in three phases: (1) an ethnographic study of selected research groups in two engineering graduate departments, (2) development of a survey for students in graduate engineering students, and (3) administering the survey to graduate engineering students in research groups to verify the findings. In order to address the project aims, three smaller studies were initiated that address individual elements of graduate education, including: learning in research groups and international diversity, and retention in graduate engineering programs. The focus of the first study was to understand how and under what conditions research groups foster successful learning and professional development for graduate engineering students, and how these findings can be used to inform management of engineering research groups to optimize student learning, productivity, and intent to complete the degree. Key findings from the ethnographic analysis indicate that group size directly influences the mechanisms of student learning, as well as several elements common across research groups from different universities and academic departments, including: power distance and communication, access to resources, and role of the advisor. During the (second) integration phase of this mixed methods study, the nine months of ethnographically guided observations and interviews were used to develop a survey examining graduate engineering student retention. Findings from the ethnographic fieldwork yielded several themes, including: the role of international diversity, research group organization and climate, student self efficacy, and individual and group learning experiences. Final retention themes from the ethnographic analysis are presented along with a discussion of how these data were configured into instrument questions. A discussion of the final instrument is presented, including validity and reliability analysis, and how the final questions were integrated into themes to test hypotheses for future studies. This chapter also presents implications for mixed methods researchers interested in using qualitative methods to create new instruments. In the third and final stage of the research study, the survey developed in the second phase of the research study was administered to four universities across the United States. Data analysis focused on better understanding the differences in retention constructs by student nationality. Results from more than 600 engineering PhD students from 6 international regions enrolled in U.S. engineering graduate programs were examined to characterize demographic differences in participant responses for intention to complete the degree. Six constructs were found to be significant in predicting students' responses regarding their intention to complete their degree, including: expectations, climate, organization, project ownership, perception of value, and individual preferences. Taken together these constructs were able to explain 28 percent of the variation in student responses. Additionally, all six constructs showed significant differences with respect to a respondent's country or region or origin. These results are discussed in light of the implications for faculty members advising similarly diverse groups of students. In combination, these three studies represent a sequential exploratory mixed methods approach in which ethnographically guided observations and interviews were integrated into a quantitative instrument. Results of this study can be used to inform the organization and management of internationally diverse research groups to foster student development and ultimately increase retention. / Ph. D.

"It's about liberation" : community development support for groups of black people with mental health problems

Seebohm, Patience January 2013 (has links)
Disproportionately high numbers of Black people use mental health services and experience involuntary treatment in the UK. There is no simple explanation, but research and policy suggest that groups run by and for Black people with mental health problems provide valued support. This study asks how community development (CD) practice can help these groups to develop and thrive. The research adopted an action research framework to develop four cycles of research, each informing the next, within a social constructivist paradigm. Methods were mainly qualitative: interviews, group discussions and observation, with a questionnaire survey in cycle one. This asked CD practitioners about their activities and helped to identify two groups for case studies in cycles two and three. During the case studies, groups received development support on their chosen topic while participating in qualitative research; activities were clearly demarcated. Reflective field notes added to the data. In the fourth cycle reflective conversations with eminent ‘critical friends’ refined and affirmed the learning. Thematic analysis was continuous and progressive. Findings suggest that CD practitioners can inspire and help Black people with mental health problems to come together in member-led, mutually supportive groups, justifying Black-only membership. Effective practitioners, especially Black role models, helped groups to generate self-belief and self-efficacy through collective action, enabling members to change their status, services and community. Those practitioners who demonstrated critical humility, commitment and competence broke the pattern of racial and psychiatric dominance. Others inadvertently reinforced societal oppression. A new concept is introduced to encapsulate the learning: the ‘liberation approach’ to CD which synthesises four perspectives: radical CD, mental health recovery, Black self-help and liberation theories. This approach helps groups to challenge oppressive processes, breaking the mould in which they feel constrained. The study contributes new theory, evidence and research methodology about CD and self-organising groups within this context.

Grupos que pesquisam sobre formação de professores e educação a distância no Brasil: um retrato / Groups that research teacher formation and distance education in Brazil: a portrait

Nascimento, Jean Lopes Ordéas 07 March 2019 (has links)
This dissertation originated from a broader study coordinated by Prof. Dr. Vani Kenski, supported by the Brazilian Association of Distance Education (ABED), from 2016 to 2017, which aimed to identify the groups that study distance education in Brazil and are registered in the directory of the National Council for Technological and Scientific Development (CNPQ). As an expansion of the previous study, this research focused on groups that research the relations between distance education and teacher formation, and had the following general goals: identify and analyze the characteristics and production of these academic groups. The specific goals are: 1) Identify and introduce the main characteristics of the groups within the education scope that research about teachers formation and distance education; 2) Ascertain the focus of research in these groups on teacher formation and distance education; and 3) Investigate and analyze the scientific production of the leaders and/or the main researchers in these groups. The research used a multiple-case study method with a qualitative approach to analyze data. Profiles from 26 groups that matched the selection criteria were analyzed and six leaders were interviewed. The groups scientific production of the past five years was also analyzed. The procedure and results of the research are divided between five chapters, being the first one about the perspective and the methodological protocols used to conduct the research. In chapter 2, I introduce the review of the productions that matched the criteria and attest the absence of studies that analyze groups that research about distance education and teacher formation. Chapter 3 brings a brief history on research in Brazil and verifies that the genesis of research groups was late, and these were only catalogued by CNPq in 1993. In chapter 4, I analyze the characteristics and composition of the groups, under various aspects, such as time of existence, number of people, partnerships and researchers titles. The interviews are analyzed in chapter 5, from questions previously formulated, aiming to further explore the topics arisen from the analysis of the groups profiles, as well as discuss other topics not available on the directory platform of the research groups. Chapter 6 is dedicated to analyze the scientific production of the groups whose leaders had been interviewed, focusing on the connections between teacher formation and distance education, methodology, theoretical framework and approach used. The evidences ensure, among others, the urgency of better integration and partnerships between groups, and the necessity of public policies to promote internationalization of the research groups actions.

PROJETOS E GRUPOS PESQUISA NA FORMAÇÃO INICIAL: UM ESTUDO A PARTIR DAS SIGNIFICAÇÕES IMAGINÁRIAS / PROJECTS AND RESEARCH GROUPS IN INITIAL FORMATIONPROJECTS AND RESEARCH GROUPS IN INITIAL FORMATION: A STUDY FROM IMAGINARY SIGNIFICATIONS

Souza, Edilson de 10 April 2008 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This research aimed at understanding social representations built by students of graduation courses in Special Education and Pedagogy, who have participated in projects and research groups at the Education Center in Federal University of Santa Maria. Our reflections pointed to the importance of research in Special Education and Pedagogy courses as a possibility of the beginners initial formation process construction that, in our viewpoint, has the participation in projects and research groups as a crucial activity in the High Education Institution. We believe that the students participation in these activities stimulate them to develop scientific works and then the formation of a future investigator or a more competent professional. The research aimed mainly at knowing Special Education and Pedagogy students representations about teachers initial formation and also to identify factors that influence in these students representations constructions related to the participation in projects and research groups and to understand Special Education and Pedagogy students formation processes constructions. In order to present our research intention, we tried to expose a little more about our understanding of research groups and its importance as well, and also about the investigation in education. We presented and discussed the theory formulated by Cornelius Castoriadis (1982, 1987, 1992, 1999) about the social imaginary dimensions both instituted and instituting, believing on the possibility of the social significations built by the subjects approximation throughout their formation process. In this way, the problem of this research is: what is the sense of the social representations attributed by Special Education and Pedagogy students to their formation considering their participation in projects and research groups? This proposal is based on a qualitative methodology and also on Bogdan Biklen s (1994) theoretical production, mainly related to the characteristics of this approach and related to the utilized data collection instruments. In this way, this investigation tries to understand UFSM Education Center students concepts of research that are built during their academic life. We observed that the sense built by the participants about self-formation is far away from a social transformation, but concerned only about their individual formation process and in qualifying themselves to dispute better conditions besides ascending socially, being these facts the instituted social representations.

With the objective of ascertaining how women's participation in the scientific research of Information Technology in Brazil is manifested and if there are any asymmetries, through an analysis of the data of the groups of the Directory of Research Groups of the National Council of Scientific and Technological Development, an exploratory and descriptive research was carried out, through the quantitative approach of the bases of the Directory of Research Groups and the Lattes Curriculum. The result of this analysis points to gender asymmetries and confirms the hypotheses of horizontal and vertical segregation in the scientific research of Information Technology reported in the literature pointed by the studies of gender and feminist epistemology. The results still suggest that Information Technology can be a multidisciplinary field of research. Finally, it is concluded that there are still many challenges to be overcome by women seeking to work in Information Technology and in other fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in Brazil and studies with this subject are crucial to encourage the change of this reality.

This paper reports a study performed in the Directory of Research Groups in Brazil (DGP) registered by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) which approach Act 10.639/03 and the scientific production about it.
