Marguerite Duras, Violette Leduc / Shameful secrets of literature : for a new reading of "original sin". Marguerite Duras, Violette LeducFrantz de Spot, Anaïs 23 September 2010 (has links)
This thesis is an attempt to rethink the relationship between pudeur (a sense of shame) and literature : it is not about shame in literature or about the literature of modesty but about the literary act as an act of pudeur. The first part of the thesis is a discovery of modesty (in French, in the occident) ; in other words it is a dropping of the veil of the discourses which, since the canonical interpretations of « original sin » in the Bible, have forged the myth of a « female modesty ». This will highlight the textual nudity of the auctorial subject (« auctorial » : from the latin augere, meaning « to increase » which is at the root of the word for « author »). Under a covert sexual interdiction and a veil wrapped round the « feminine », female modesty dissimulates a generic complexity : the problematic articulation between species (human-animal), genders (male-female), and genres (religious or philosophical-literary) of which literature might hold the secret. In its second part the thesis examines the effects of pudeur auctoriale as revealed in a series of texts by Marguerite Duras and Violette Leduc. Among the intimate genres that these authors revisit in fiction there are : the autobiography (La Bâtarde and, to a certain extent L’Amant de la Chine du Nord), the diary and correspondence (Aurélia Steiner and L’Affamée). This study underlines the deconstruction from the inside towards which pudeur tends : a poetic responsibility and a literary honesty.

The Sins of Boromir : Representations of Sin in J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the RingsBerg, Daniel January 2018 (has links)
In this essay, Ralph C. Wood's religious-philosophical interpretation of LotR has been analyzed, with emphasis upon his conclusions about evil and sin in LotR. Some of Wood's claims about evil and sin in LotR have been applied upon the character Boromir, in order to show how sin is manifested as truth-transgression, pride, avarice, and misdirected love. A theoretical section is presented in order to define the concepts of sin, mimetic desire, and evil. The literary analysis focuses upon the character Boromir; the relevant works of literary scholas Ralph C. Wood and René Girard have been chosen as points of reference in this analysis. Attention is also given to an article by the historian Stephen Morillo, in the analysis of Norse pagan and Christian interpretations. It has been argued that a Christian reading of LotR, contrary to Morillo's standpoint, is possible.

Baptism and Original Sin in the Early Church : contributions of TertullianAsue, Daniel Ude January 2014 (has links)
This study examines the baptismal practices of the early Christian community using Tertullian’s ethical text on baptism in relation to his other writings to dialogue with the Roman Catholic understanding of baptism, original sin and grace. Tertullian referring to the sacramental form of baptism that is done with water, held that baptism is indispensable for salvation because it imparts the grace that washes away original sin and makes someone a Christian; and capable of attaining a matured Christian life.
At the moment, the Roman Catholic Church does not confer baptism of water on polygamists, and subsequently fails to admit them to her sacramental life because of their polygamous relations. This raises a question regarding the salvation of these polygamous families. How do they receive baptismal grace and become part of the church?
This study argues that church and baptism were inseparable right from the beginning of Christianity in the New Testament. People became members of the church by the fact of their baptism. This study does a hermeneutical retrieval of the early church’s teaching on baptism and original sin in the light of Tertullian as the pillar of western theology. The study concludes by invoking pastoral consideration to baptize polygamous families (husband and wives) who married before converting to the faith. They are not to enter into any new marriage after baptism since they have received Christ in their state. “Go and sin no more,” says Christ. / Dissertation (MA Theol)--University of Pretoria, 2014. / gm2014 / Church History and Church Policy / unrestricted

[en] FROM HEURISTICS OF FEAR TO THE LOVE PRAXIS: MORAL-THEOLOGICAL STUDY ABOUT THE IMPERATIVE OF RESPONSIBILITY IN HANS JONAS / [pt] DA HEURÍSTICA DO TEMOR À PRÁXIS DO AMOR: ESTUDO TEOLÓGICO-MORAL SOBRE O PRINCÍPIO RESPONSABILIDADE EM HANS JONASWALDIR SOUZA 20 May 2010 (has links)
[pt] Da heurística do temor à práxis do amor. / [en] From heuristics of fear to the love praxis. Moral-theological study about The Imperative of responsibility in Hans Jonas. The ethics of technology must not be considered simply according to its applicative phase but also according to its radical insufficiency, its teleological ambivalence, its dynamics of knowledge-power that increases more and more, and therefore, also according to its elucidative phase. Thus technology demands to be completed and to have its reference in a global anthropology wherein it can find its role besides the other dimensions of human being – essentially human, with the properly ambivalences and oppositions of the mystery of its liberty of which is part the experiences of fortune and misfortune, pleasure and pain, good and bad wherein the human epic unfolds in its history. The preservation of such essence constitutes the main duty of ethics and of theology to deal with responsibility and life. Herein is the justification to the moral-theological thinking that this thesis intends. The topic of this thesis wants to analyze the impact of tecnoscience and biotechnoscience progresses before the new human action. So Hans Jonas’ thinkings arise as outline approaches of this reality. From the main outlines in his thinking a moral-theological study will be done. Here is the great challenge to a study that detects the impasses, the possible alternatives, and the challenges that Christian good-news gives to a historically new world: make an urgent transition but very conscious, from the heuristics of fear to love praxis.

The Seven Deadly Sins of Prostitution: Perceptions of Prostitutes and Prostitution in Eighteenth-Century LondonSteinberg, Jessica January 2015 (has links)
This thesis examines perceptions of lower-class female prostitutes and prostitution in eighteenth-century London. It reveals that throughout the Hanoverian period perceptions of prostitution were shaped by sensibilities about morality, the social order, and sin. To explore attitudes towards prostitution in eighteenth-century London, this dissertation evaluates how governing elites, ecclesiastical authorities, contributors to the newspaper press, and popular commentators discussed prostitution. This dissertation engages with two main assumptions about prostitution in eighteenth-century London. First, it demonstrates that there is more continuity in perceptions of prostitution than historians have recognized; attitudes towards prostitutes did not shift from hostility to sympathy in a straight-forward manner. Second, this dissertation reveals that prostitution was regarded by Augustan and Hanoverian Londoners as a significant social problem because it embodied and encapsulated the seven deadly sins – lust, avarice, pride, envy, gluttony, sloth, and wrath. This thesis suggests that prostitutes’ excessive lust and avarice were not seen as disparate issues, but were often discussed together. Paradoxically, discussants recognized that financial considerations drove some women into prostitution, but these women were regarded as abnormally greedy and corrupt because they resorted to deceptive tactics. Pride and envy were associated with prostitution because Hanoverians believed some prostitutes bought extravagant clothes and cosmetics to conceal their lowly status and enhance their appearance to emulate elites. Hanoverians regarded these prostitutes with trepidation because they threatened to undermine their hierarchically ordered society. Prostitutes’ proclivities towards drunkenness and idleness were associated with gluttony and sloth. Commentators feared that drunken and idle prostitutes would encourage men to engage in these dissolute activities, leading to greater disorder. Wrath was closely associated with prostitution because of its association with violence. Although prostitutes were both the victims and perpetrators of assault, incidents in which prostitutes were assailants were reported more frequently, suggesting that Britons regarded prostitutes as disorderly, sinful criminals. Each chapter also brings attention to concerns regarding prostitutes’ lack of self-control and their apparent ability to cause men to lose self-control; how double standards of morality influenced discussions of prostitution; the consequences of prostitutes’ criminality and ability to deceive Londoners; and the various institutions, organizations, and suggestions proposed and established to reform prostitutes and eradicate sin from society.

Perceptions of agency: Beliefs of four adolescent girls in high school as revealed through literature discussions.Curtis, Joan Scott 08 1900 (has links)
Published research suggests that cultural practices and institutional structures influence adolescent girls' engagement and achievement in school. This study was an attempt to further investigate that claim by describing the perceptions of agency held by four adolescent girls in high school. Members of the same English class, the girls volunteered to participate in three lunchtime meetings to discuss Evelyn Coleman's (2001) Born In Sin. Analysis of classroom observations, transcripts of audio recordings of the book discussions, and individual interviews yielded a more precise definition of agency than those used in previous research, including a view of agency as dialogic. In addition, four major themes describe these girls' agentic moves: (1) a temporal orientation, which connects the past, present, and future; (2) responsibility for positive and negative events; (3) strategic decision making; (4) negotiating with people in power. Implications of this study inform both teaching decisions and future research related to adolescent girls.

The present project "Web System for decision-making of Crea+" is developed in the course "Taller de Proyecto 1 y 2" and is in charge of the virtual enterprise ITExpert (Virtual Enterprise specializing in analysis, design and implementation of innovative solutions and services in technology information) belonging to the UPC (Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas). In recent decades the information management in companies has taken a high-level importance. This is because the transformation of data into information can be a critical difference between the survival of the company or decommissioning. This report will analyze and model the process "Indicator Management" of the organization nonprofit Crea+ focusing on the different component activities and aligning the current work that the organization performed in order to implement a web information system that helps decision making. The Management information systems allow data collection of the activities in the organization in order to analyze and obtaining valuable information. This information will support the decisions made by executives which will affect positively or negatively to organizational development. Also, because of the importance of these decisions the information systems have evolved and improved the way to organize and present data for easy analysis. One of the tools used for decision-making is the Balanced Scorecard becouse the complexity when handling large amounts of information generates the need to know what happens in the organization. In this sense, the organization Crea+ has seen the need to organize their information in one of these management information systems for which has been seen as a better alternative to implement a Business Intelligence web system. In this way each member of the relevant area of the organization can access to the information contained in the web system and view the status of the company based on the data collected so they can generate reports for senior executives of the organization Crea+. / Tesis

Sin and human accountability in second temple JudaismNamgung, Young 08 1900 (has links)
i
Sanders (1977:114) contends that “[s]in comes only when man actually disobeys; if he were not to disobey he would not be a sinner.” This thesis was thus motivated to critique Sanders’s contention in relation to sin and human accountability in Second Temple Judaism. Before delving into various understandings of sin and human accountability of Second Temple Judaism, in Chapter 2, I deal with the Weltanschauung of Second Temple Judaism. It was observed that Israel’s covenantal history is far from discontinuous with creation at a time of severe theological, sociological, and political plights in spite of the presence of sin and evil. In Chapters 3, I deal with how the authors of 1 Enoch and Jubilees understood the presence of sin and evil. Even though the Watcher story in these Enochic traditions serves to attribute the origin of sin to the fallen angels, it was observed the Watcher story cannot quench Second Temple Jews’ uneasiness in relation to the presence of sin and evil. In Chapter 4, I deal with Qumran literature. By focusing on the term yetzer ra both in pre-Qumran and in Qumran writings, it is worth noting that Qumran literature shows a tendency to realize the severity of the sinfulness of humanity in a complicated and radicalized manner. When looking at first century Jewish (4 Ezra and 2 Baruch) and early Christian (Romans and James) literature in Chapter 5, it was observed that the authors of 4 Ezra and 2 Baruch came to develop further pessimistic anthropologies distinct from their predecessors in the Second Temple period. However, for them, a possibility is open for the few righteous remnants to obey divine commandments. It can be said that their understandings of sin and human accountability appear to be synergistic. For Paul and James, however, the paradigm of the relationship between divine agency and human agency is shifted from synergism to monergism in terms of the Jesus Christ event. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2017. / Old Testament Studies / PhD / Unrestricted

The Prodigal Daughter: An Edition of an Anonymous TextDeans, Paige 01 January 2019 (has links)
The Prodigal Daughter (1736) is a poem that, on the surface, appears to be an approachable text that was likely geared towards a children’s audience during New England’s first Great Awakening, within the approachable format of a chapbook. However, when explored further, The Prodigal Daughter reveals a complicated textual history during a time of theological and social revival in New England. This thesis considers the historical context of The Prodigal Daughter’s narrative, as well as the poem’s publication history. The text’s transmission is carefully examined and encapsulated in this edition—giving the reader a transcription that is the result of collating twenty-eight surviving witnesses of The Prodigal Daughter. This thesis serves as a critical edition of The Prodigal Daughter, with an introduction which includes a careful consideration of gendered theology, homiletics, the literary marketplace, and the role of the devil in the female conversion narrative during New England’s first Great Awakening.
