Vanishing Acts: Absence, Gender, and Magic in Early Modern English Drama, 1558-1642

Dell, Jessica 19 November 2014 (has links)
This dissertation examines how early modern English playwrights employ absence to enrich their representations of the unknown, including witchcraft and the supernatural. Throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries magical themes were often dramatized through visual and linguistic excess. Whether this excess was manifested through the use of vibrant costumes, farcical caricatures, or exaggerated dialogue, magic was often synonymous with theatricality. Playwrights such as William Rowley, Ben Jonson, and William Shakespeare, however, challenge stereotypical depictions of magic by contrasting excessive magic with the subtler power of restrained or off-stage magic. Embedded in the fantastical events and elaborate plots of Shakespeare and his contemporaries, absence, whether as an unstaged thing or person or an absent ideology, becomes a crucial element in understanding how playwrights represented and understood occult issues during the early modern period. Further, when gendered feminine, magical absences serve to combat oppressive silences within scripts and provide female subjects with an unimpeded and inherently magical space from which to challenge pre-established patriarchal systems of control. Each chapter in this dissertation, therefore, appraises the magical possibilities that theatrical absences provide to women as a platform from which to develop their narrative voice. Partnered with a complementary discussion of Jonson’s The Masque of Queens and two thematically linked witchcraft cases, my first chapter argues that Mistress Ford uses the complete stage absence of both a witch and a queen in The Merry Wives of Windsor to reform her community and critique her society’s unjust categorization of women. In chapter two, I examine a series of “vanishing acts” in The Birth of Merlin and argue that Rowley’s female characters use their final moments on stage to contextualize their impending absences for audiences as moments of magical defiance rather than defeat in the face of male tyranny. In my final chapter, I look at how magical objects, such as the handkerchief in Shakespeare’s Othello or the belt in Jonson’s The Sad Shepherd resist the absence of their female creators and continue to provide physically absent or dead women with magical agency. By structuring my dissertation on these three specific gradations of absence, I provide a nuanced analysis of the purposes these dramatic omissions serve by focusing on how these shades of absence subtly alter the ways in which we interpret and define early modern magical belief. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

The relationship between psychometrically-defined social anxiety and working memory performance

Paskowski, Timothy L. 01 May 2011 (has links)
Anxiety disorders are among the most commonly diagnosed class of mental illness in the United States, and often involve abnormally high levels of stress and social fear. Despite high lifetime prevalence rates, social anxiety disorder (SAD) has remarkably low diagnosis and treatment rates. Furthermore, while individuals with other specific psychiatric disorders tend to exhibit significant neuropsychological deficits, neuropsychological functioning in individuals with SAD remains largely untested. A majority of the few existing studies concerning neuropsychological performance in SAD samples focus on specific functions, and their limited results are highly mixed. The primary objective of this investigation was to provide a more thorough, broad assessment of both auditory and visual working memory as related to psychometrically-defined social anxiety disorder. In addition, this study aimed to help clarify as to whether such deficits are related to the construct of social anxiety, or whether any potential deficits are better explained by generalized state and/or trait (in-the-moment) anxiety. The implications of a deficit in the visual and/or auditory working memory domains are multifaceted. For example, such a deficit may lead to the inability to detect visual cues in social situations. The inability to process these social cues has the potential to exacerbate some SAD- related symptoms, such as fear of humiliation and judgment. Twenty-nine college students completed both phases of this study, including an assessment of state and trait anxiety as well as social phobia and a four-part working memory battery. An analysis of the Phase II data indicates that individual scores on the four measures of both visual and auditory working memory did not relate to trait and/or state anxiety or psychometrically-defined social anxiety.; Thus, it appears that social, generalized trait, and generalized state anxiety do not relate to a neuropsychological deficit in either type of working memory in this sample population. However, we did find a statistical trend suggesting that as social anxiety increased, there was a relative decrease in visual vs. auditory working memory. This statistical trend remained after covarying for state and trait anxiety respectively. Therefore, future research in this area should examine the discrepancy in performance between the auditory and visual working memory domains as it relates to both diagnosed social phobia and psychometrically-defined social anxiety.

Robust Speech Activity Detection and Direction of Arrival Using Convolutional Neural Networks

Näslund, Anton, Jeansson, Charlie January 2020 (has links)
Social robots are becoming more and more common in our everyday lives. In the field of conversational robotics, the development goes towards socially engaging robots with humanlike conversation. This project looked into one of the technical aspects when recognizing speech, videlicet speech activity detection (SAD). The presented solution uses a convolutional neural network (CNN) based system to detect speech in a forward azimuth area. The project used a dataset from FestVox, called CMU Artic and was complimented by adding recorded noises. A library called Pyroomacoustics were used to simulate a real world setup to create a robust system. A simplified version was built, this model only detected speech activity and a accuracy of 95%was reached. The finished model resulted in an accuracy of 93%.It was compared with similar project, a voice activity detection(VAD) algorithm WebRTC with beamforming, as no previous published solutions to our project was found. Our solution proved to be higher in accuracy in both cases, compared to the accuracy WebRTC achieved on our dataset. / Kandidatexjobb i elektroteknik 2020, KTH, Stockholm

Gillis, Benjamin 05 1900 (has links)
The new planning framework created by The Act to amend the Act respecting land use planning and development and other legislative provisions concerning metropolitan communities (S.Q. 2010, c. 10) raises a number of questions about land use issues, notably with regards to growth management and more specifically with the concept of urban growth boundaries. In light of the new planning framework, the aim of this research is to assess the design of Greater Montreal’s Metropolitan Growth Boundary as defined in The Metropolitan Land Use and Development Plan (PMAD) adopted by the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal (CMM) and which came into effect on March 12, 2012, following approval of the Québec government. This paper will also look at the management of the Metropolitan Growth Boundary within the new planning framework by focusing on the content of The Land Use and Development Plan (SAD) in force in the five Regional County Municipalities (RCM) of Greater Montreal’s North Shore. The regional planning documents will be examined with regards to four complementary planning tools (Minimum Density Thresholds, Phased Growth Programs, Agricultural Development Plans and Demands of Collective Scope) in order to ascertain whether the tools were used and if so, whether they contribute to supporting the Metropolitan Growth Boundary objectives. This research finds that, in terms of its design, even considering the lack of synchronization between regional growth boundaries and the Metropolitan Growth Boundary, the Metropolitan Growth Boundary is now a much more strategic tool than the previous regional incarnations within the regional Land Use and Development Plans. As well, in terms of the management of the Metropolitan Growth Boundary, it is possible to conclude that due to a highly variable planning situation, the regional planning framework highlights the need for a common planning approach in order to achieve the objectives of the Metropolitan Growth Boundary.

Håkansson, Anders January 2014 (has links)

A survey of the Assistant Directors role in the making of a TV- or film production.

Olofsson, Jenny January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation is a degree project for a bachelor's degree at Media Producer Education, 180 credits, Umeå University. The study is about identifying and describing how the assistant roles differ from first, second and third and how the work is structured and distributed during a television and film production in Sweden, the United States and England. The study also shows the similarities and differences that exist between the countries. The report is initiated with a part in which the background to the study and the questions that gave rise to the study are presented. Then the method chosen for the study is presented. Through participation in a television drama production, interviews and literature studies have research material has been collected for the study. The conclusion of the study shows that in the United States and England the AD professions and what they include are pretty much the same, However, it differs in Sweden. In Sweden, the role of First AD is the same as in the United States and England, but the others have become more optimized to suit Swedish television or film production. In Sweden, the United States and England the First AD is the directors right hand person and the link between the crew and the director. The first AD is the one who controls the recording site and its main task is to lead and coordinate the film team and support the director in its work. A Second AD in the United States and England works directly under the First AD and acts as his or hers the right hand person. The second AD’s main task is to ensure that the First AD's directives is performed in time and by the right person, that the schedule for actors is held and put together every recording day's call sheet. In Sweden, the Second AD can act as the First AD right hand person, or have responsibility for the background actors. Then the Second AD under pre-production books extras for each scene, schedules costume tests and during production, the second AD has responsibility for the extras and directs the extras according to the director's wishes. In the United States and England the third AD works directly under the First AD and the Second AD and its main responsibility is to assist the First AD and Second AD. The Third AD is also the one that has the responsibility for the background actors. In Sweden, the Third AD works directly under the First AD and Seond AD, if the Second AD isn’t in charge of the background actors. However if the Second AD is in charge of the Extras, then the Third AD works closer to the first AD and fills up for the responsibilities that the Second AD would otherwise have.

Objective of the thesis is providing scientific facts about current situation in educational tourism that can serve as a data base for actions benefiting further development of this form of tourism. Extensive research has been conducted at University of Novi Sad as the most important factor in educational tourism, as well as at cultural institutions in Novi Sad and Sremski Karlovci. Also, research has been done at number of tourist organizations, associations, government bodies and non governmental organizations who are regarded as key factors in educational tourism, in order to confirm hypothesis. Results of research confirmed the hypothesis that educational tourism in Novi Sad and it&rsquo;s gravitational area is underdeveloped, bearing in mind it&rsquo;s potential. The key role of University of Novi Sad as development factor has been determined. With it&rsquo;s quality attributes it can contribute significantly to educational tourism development at the given destination. Sremski Karlovci and riparian area of the Danube as part of Novi Sad gravitation area, represent significant base for developing certain forms of educational tourism, such as educational camps as a forn of informal education for student population. In the thesis number of theoretical and empirical facts are presented that confirm the hypothesis.</p>
