You have to fight to make your voice heard, it's the student's voice I try to make heard’’ : A qualitative study of the school counselor's preventive work against bullying

Rujovic, Merima, Jonsson, Adam January 2020 (has links)
The aim of the study has been to investigate school counselors' preventive work against bullying in school and what opportunities and obstacles are found in their work. The study is based on seven qualitative interviews where the interviewees have varying backgrounds and experiences surrounding school counselor work. A constant throughout the study is that the school counselor is in a multiprofessional operation and is usually the only profession based in a psychosocial perspective. The school counselor’s tasks are characterized primarily by an overall responsibility for students’ wellbeing, as well as working to prevent bullying. As bullying can result in students performing worse as well as a risk for developing an antisocial behavior, the school counselor’s important preventive work follows. The preventive measures can be seen on a school, class and individual level, which creates a holistic perspective. Factors such as time and resources prevent the school counselor from practicing their knowledge in school, as well as limit their collaboration with other professions. Along this reasoning follows the interviewees’ similar opinions that the principal has a noticeable influence on counseling work and can increase or limit their ability to practice their knowledge. With the help of our theoretical templates we have a better understanding of our analysis, which has helped us understand the school counselor’s role in a multiprofessional operation.

“As a school counselor, I can in any case ensure that the student has a good day and that the student wants to come back tomorrow again, even though something bad has happened today.” : -A qualitative study on school counsellors' preventive work against the phenomenon of bullying.

Shemoun, Sabina, Engstrand, Anna January 2021 (has links)
Children spend a lot of their time in school during their childhood. To be able to learn and manage what is required of them, it is important that the school is a safe place to be in with a good environment. The school is also a place where children from different backgrounds come together and the differences can make inequalities occur.  This can lead to bullying and offensive treatment. In these cases, it is required that the school acts, not only for the students to feel good but the school is also obliged to do that by the Swedish law. The aim with this essay is to focus on the school counselor’s prevention against offensive treatment in schools. Since bullying is on the rise, it is important that there is ongoing work to prevent it. Data collection has taken place through interviews and analyzed based on the purpose of the study and issues. The main conclusion that has been seen as an important inference is that bullying needs to work against different preventions.

The one who has the mandate to define whether one is exposed to violence, is the one who is exposed" : A qualitative study of school counselors 'preventive work with boys' violence against girls

Nilsson, Sanna, Karlsson, Lovisa January 2021 (has links)
In order to reduce and prevent domestic violence, preventive work needs to begin at an early age. In previous research it is suggested that preventive work needs to begin as early as between grade six and eight. Recently, it has been discovered that many young people have a distorted view of what constitutes a healthy and equal relationship. In this interview study, six social workers employed as school counselors, employed in the seventh, eighth and ninth grades has participated. Central questions have investigated how and if they work preventively with boys' perceptions of violence, intimate relationships and sex. Through the interviews, it emerged that the school counselors' preventive work takes place in different ways. For example, they defined violence in different ways and the limits for what is supposed to constitute violence is interpreted differently. The preventive work turned out to consist of differences and similarities. For example, theme weeks, presence in open spaces and external lecturers were common elements in their preventive work. The differences could show up for example that they focused on different topics. To gain an understanding of the school counselor's preventive work with boys' violence against girls, this study has included the gender perspective. By looking at how their preventive work can be understood from the point of view of gender, it concluded that the school counselor's own gender perspective affects how they work. The study found that school counselors do work to prevent gender norms.

Skolkuratorers yrkesstress - kartläggning, konsekvenser och coping : En kvalitativ studie

Lindberg, Adrian January 2021 (has links)

Bahnaneh, Beroulla January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of the study is to investigate what obstacles school counselors face when it comes to preventing mental illness and what strategies they use in the work of providing support to students in school. The purpose is also to investigate what collaboration between school counselors and teachers looks like when it comes to work against mental illness. The study is conducted based on qualitative collection method where I conduct five semi structured interviews and then review the results based on a thematic analysis. The theoretical basis of this study is KASAM and system theory. The results showed that school counselors face obstacles in the form of lack of time, too much focus on remedial work and teachers’ shortcomings in knowledge about mental illness and the psychosocial perspective. Strategies used are listening, not judging, building relationships with students, and validating and normalizing students’ emotions. The results also show that more school counselors perceive collaboration as lacking due to lack of communication, teachers prioritize teaching and their shortcomings in knowledge about mental illness and the psychosocial perspective.

Skolkuratorers arbete på högstadieskolor : En kvalitativ studie av skolkuratorers möjligheter och begränsningar för att främja ungdomars psykiska hälsa / School counselors' work in junior high schools : A qualitative study of school counselors' opportunities and limitations for promoting young people's mental health

Finnhult, Amanda, Ekelius, Maja January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of the study is to gain an increased knowledge of the work that school counselors carry out in junior high schools to promote mental health and what opportunities and limitations there are in the profession as a school counselor. The empirical material has been collected through six semi-structured interviews with school counselors who work at various junior high schools. The participating school counselors have worked for different lengths of time in the profession. The school counselors who have worked in the profession for the shortest time have been employed for less than a year, while the school counselors with the longest experience have been employed in the profession for twelve years. Role theory and the concept of room for maneuver are used in the study to analyze the collected empirical result. Based on the empirical data collected, the school counselors in the study think that the mental illness among junior high school students has increased. The factors that the school counselors mainly considered have contributed to the increased mental illness are linked to demands and shortcomings in school, the use of mobile phones and social media, as well as bullying and the role of parents. The results of the study also show that there are not enough resources in student health for the school counselor to be able to offer all students the support they need. Based on the collected empirical data and the previous research presented, the study shows that school counselors experience lack of resources within the profession as a school counselor.

High school counselor knowledge of NCAA regulations for prospective student-athlete transition to college

Padilla, Carmenita C. 01 January 2015 (has links)
This descriptive study examines whether high school counselors are equipped to advise potential recruits on new NCAA academic eligibility regulations. It highlights the NCAA’s new Division I academic eligibility regulations in effect for current seniors in high school (entering collegiate class of 2016) and gives an overview of academic rule changes within the national governing body. The enhanced academic eligibility rules increase minimum GPA and test score as well as mandates strict core course requirements, prioritizing the role of a high school counselor in the entire process. The study will seek to examine the knowledge of high school counselors on new NCAA academic eligibility rules, the resources available to them and those needed to better assist potential recruits from underserved backgrounds. This study will focus on high school counselors employed in California at underserved schools characterized by those receiving Title I wide funding from the federal government. The majority of students at Title I wide institutions are minorities and first generation students and these populations rely heavily on their high school counselors for college knowledge. In many cases, athletic scholarships are these student’s only means of obtaining a collegiate degree; highlighting the need to examine the knowledge and resources high school counselors have and need to properly advise potential NCAA student-athletes. High school counselors need information and resources specific to NCAA academic eligibility regulations to help student-athletes from underserved backgrounds keep their collegiate dreams alive.

Skolkuratorers perspektiv på ungdomars psykiska hälsa relaterat till sociala medier / School counselors’ perspectives on adolescent mental health in relation to social media

Emilsson Forss, Thea, Järnkrok, Julia January 2021 (has links)
There is a concern that social media may be a contributing factor to increase mental health issues among adolescents, while research also shows that social media has positive consequences. The aim is to investigate school counselors’ experiences of the impact of social media on adolescent mental health, also addressing how they deal with this in the workplace. Seven semi-structured interviews were conducted with school counselors working at lower and upper secondary schools in Sweden. The results indicate social media as having negative consequences for adolescent mental health due to the fact that adolescents are constantly available, social media being a space for exclusion and comparison. Social media also contains positive factors as it can be a place for identity building and inclusion. School counselors deal with this by reflecting and turning a spotlight on this in their work. In conclusion, indications are that more studies are required within the field.

Vi borde ju se, höra mer, vi borde ju veta mer : En kvalitativ studie om skolkuratorers roll mot syskonvåld / We should see, hear more, we should know more : A qualitative study on school counselor's role against sibling violence

Bergvall, Jacquline, Jonsson, Teres January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to see how school counselors at high schools can work preventively with sibling violence within the school social work. The study was based on three questions that concern how the school counselors work preventively against sibling violence, which methods can be useful and how they can help students who have already been exposed to sibling violence. This study has been carried out based on a qualitative approach through four focus group interviews with a total of ten interviewees who work in high school. The results of the study show that there is more knowledge about sibling violence and the preventive work around it than the school counselors initially perceived. Through discussions and reflections in the focus groups, the school counselors have gained more knowledge. The high schools have a number of good methods that already exist within the activities that can be applied both to the preventive work and the work where sibling violence already is present. It is also possible to work preventively where the violence is already taking place by preventing the violence from continuing and escalating.

The sooner I am as a school counselor detects the problems, the easier it will be to prevent them" : A qualitative study on school counselors' views on prevention of mental ill-health among students

Sundler, Wilma January 2023 (has links)
Children spend a lot of time in school during their childhood and it is important that schools are safe and good environments. Though, mental illness among pupils in Sweden continues to increase. The education act (SFS 2010:800) states that schools and especially school counselors should work with health promotion and prevention with primarily mental illness, even if the content of such prevention remain a bit unclear. The aim of this study was to describe and analyze how school counselors talk about prevention as part of their work to counter mental illness among pupils. The study has a constructionistic approach and method used is qualitative interviews, where the interviewees are school counselors.School counselors express knowledge about mental illness, but underline a need to continuously learn more about young people’s living conditions and how to prevent mental illness. The school counselors are consistent about the importance of working preventively against mental illness in school, a work which they see as unclear and primarily construct as being present among pupils and group activities. However, obstacles are perceived within school organizations to carry out such preventive work, which relate to ad hoc tasks, scarce resources, unclear guidelines and challenging collaboration with other professional groups in the school.
