Physical activity levels by glycemia status: A population-based cross-sectional study in Peru

Ganoza-Calero, Antonelhla M., Cuadros-Torres, Milagros, Bernabé-Ortiz, Antonio 01 April 2021 (has links)
Objective: To assess whether the prevalence of low physical activity levels and time spent watching TV differ depending on glycemia status. Methods: A secondary analysis using data from a population-based study was conducted. Two were the outcomes: physical activity levels, derived from the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, and sitting time watching TV. The exposure was glycemia status, defined based on results of the oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT): euglycemia, dysglycemia, and T2DM. The T2DM group was further split into: aware and unaware of T2DM diagnosis. Prevalence ratios (PR) and 95% CI were reported using Poisson regression models. Results: Data of 1607 individuals, mean age 48.2 (SD: 10.6) years, 809 (50.3%) females, were analyzed. Dysglycemia and T2DM was present in 16.9% (95% CI: 15.1%–18.8%) and 11.0% (95% CI: 9.5%–12.6%) of participants, respectively. A total of 605 (37.6%; 95% CI: 35.2%–39.9%) participants had low levels of physical activity and 1019 (63.3%; 95% CI: 60.9%–65.7%) subjects spent ≥2 h per day sitting watching TV. In multivariable model, there was no significant association between glycemia status and physical activity levels (PR = 1.14; 95% CI: 0.95–1.36). Similar result was found between glycemia status and sitting time watching TV. However, those aware of T2DM diagnosis were more likely to have low levels of physical activity (PR = 1.31; 95% CI: 1.06–1.61) compared to the euglycemia group. Conclusions: We found a no relationship between glycemia status and physical activity level or sitting time watching TV, pointing out similar levels of physical (in)activity among those with euglycemia, dysglycemia and T2DM. Individuals aware of having T2DM were 30% more likely to have low physical activity levels compared to the euglycemic group. There is a need to increase physical activity levels among T2DM individuals. / Revisión por pares

Pachas Chanca, Gianella Araceli, Pérez barrientos , lesly yadira 02 July 2021 (has links)
Objective: To determine the association between periodontitis and sedentary lifestyle in adults in the United States between the years 2013-2014. Materials and Methods: Analytical, observational, cross-sectional, retrospective, retrospective study, data from 3333 adults aged 30 to 78 years, from the 2013-2014 NHANES National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of the United States were used. Periodontitis was assessed as presence and absence and sedentary lifestyle was composed of hours on TV, hours on the computer, and hours of sedentary activity. Likewise, intervening variables were gender, age, educational level, income, medical conditions, preventive measures, diabetes, disability, dental visit, dental consultation, oral health, nutrition, tobacco use, health insurance. Descriptive statistics were obtained for the variables mentioned. Comparison of periodontitis with the covariates was analyzed using Chi-square and T-student tests. Are Physically Active College Students More Successful Academically Than Their Inactive Peers?

Meacham, Jared T 18 December 2015 (has links)
This research project intended to explore the possible relationship between physical activity and academic achievement in college students. Using an anonymous online survey, data was collected over two semesters. Ten thousand currently-enrolled college students ages eighteen and older from all states and recognized territories of the United States participated. The survey gathered data concerning a student’s age, gender, race, body weight, height, geographic region of college attendance, cumulative GPA, and physical activity level. The FIT Index of Kasari was used to classify each student’s physical activity level. A quintile split by FIT score was conducted to determine if physically active students were more successful academically than their inactive peers. Univariate analysis of variance (ANOVA), independent sample t-Test, and descriptive analysis were conducted on data pertaining to secondary research questions regarding FIT scores of students in each geographical region of college attendance, gender and race. The research found no statistically significant correlation existed between academic achievement and physical activity in college students. It found that students with very low and very high physical activity levels had lower academic achievement scores than students reporting moderate physical activity. There were significant differences in FIT scores of students in the northwest, but not among students in the southwest, northeast, or southeast. Significant differences in FIT scores were found to exist between males and females and between white and non-white college students. The research found a number of significant differences between groups within the quintile split of FIT score data regarding the primary research question.

However, despite the efficacy of the surgical treatment, some individuals present weight gain relapse. Objectives: To identify the variables associated with weight regain in patients undergoing bariatric surgery; assess the impact of weight on quality of life; evaluate perception and satisfaction of body image; evaluate symptoms of anxiety and depression and compare the groups: weight regain versus non-weight regain. Method: This is a descriptive/cross-sectional study. A total of 43 individuals, between 28 and 63 years old, who underwent bariatric surgery due to restrictive surgery (adjustable gastric banding and vertical banded gastroplasty) or predominantly restrictive (Roux-en-y gastric bypass, with or without the containment ring) for at least five years (between 2008 - 2012), participated in the study. The following instruments were used to collect data: Socio-demographic questionnaire; Impact of weight on quality of life Questionnaire (IWQOL-Lite); Silhouetted Figures Scale and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Participants were invited to participate in the study after their medical records were analyzed. They were divided into 2 groups: in group 1, cases in which there was no weight regain (GNRP) and in group 2 cases of weight regain (GRP). Individual meetings were scheduled with each participant, when a new weighing was performed, which served as an indicator to assess whether or not there was weight regain. Results and Conclusions: Out of the total number of participants, it was observed that (31) 72.1% were still obese, (11) 25.6% were overweight, and only (1) 2.3% were eutrophic. Regarding weight regain, (30) 69.8% presented a relapse above 15% of the weight lost. By comparing the two groups it was observed that there is a greater prevalence of sedentary lifestyle in the GRP. Symptoms of depression were found in (4) 13.3% of GRP. We expect that the results of this research may subsidize strategies to help these patients better deal with the problems associated with bariatric surgery.

Nirla Gomes Guedes 01 September 2011 (has links)
The objective of this study is to validate the nursing diagnosis of sedentary lifestyle (SL) in individuals with hypertension, based on the idea that it is necessary to evaluate this diagnosis in relation to the appropriateness of the definition, the defining characteristics (CD) and the related factors (FR) in this population and that there are other clinical indicators relevant to the SL, in addition to the factors defined by NANDA-I. The validation of the SL was conducted in two stages: concept analysis and validation by expert. To implement the first stage we used the integrative literature review of five databases (LILACS, CINAHL, PubMed, Scopus and Cochrane), with the following combinations of descriptors and equivalent in English and Spanish: Sedentary lifestyle & Hypertension and Physical inactivity & Hypertension. After application of the inclusion and exclusion criteria, the remaining 43 studies which supported the analysis of the concept. After this stage, an instrument was built containing the FR and identified CD, with their respective conceptual definitions and empirical references. This instrument was subjected to the evaluation of 48 specialist nurses in terminologies of nursing and/or sedentary lifestyle and/or hypertension. The validation process has led to the following results: change of the definition of the SL, definition of some clinical indicators and the addition of others. In this way, it is recommended the following definition to the SL: It refers to a life style in which the individual does not perform physical exercise in frequency, duration nor the recommended intensity. The final proposal of the validation process incorporates eleven FR,: " defective knowledge on the benefits that the physical activity brings to the health and / or on the consequences of the sedentary life style â; â lack of motivation for practicing physical exercise â; â lack of interest in exercising â; â lack of resources (time, money, place, security and equipment) â; â lack of training to perform physical exercise â; â attitudes, beliefs and habits of health that make difficult the practice of physical activity â; â lack of social support for the practice of physical exercise â; â lack of confidence for practice of physical exercise â; â damaged mobility â; â intolerance to the activity â; â report of pain â. The first five described FR are those who already compose the taxonomy II of the NANDA-I, being the fifth one the only one with the same nomination. Regarding the CD, it is recommended: the separation of the present characteristic in the NANDA-I â demonstrates lack of physical conditioning â in âreduced cardio-respiratory capacity â, â reduced muscular strength â and âreduced flexibility of the articulationsâ; the maintenance of â chooses routines without physical exercises â and â it verbalizes preference for activities with little physical exercise â; and the addition of "excess weight"; â low performance in the instrumental activities of daily life â and â it does not carry out physical activities in the leisure timeâ. As the conceptual definitions and empirical references built, were, in general, evidenced statistically proportions of matching within the specialists not less than 80% (p > 0.05) and values index of content validity of diagnosis more than 0.70 . The same was found for the 11 FR, and for the eight CD. It is considered that validation process assumed a direction for the diagnostic accuracy of clinical indicators of SL, contributing with the refinement and improvement of this diagnosis, and of its components. It is essential that the Nursing to appropriate this diagnosis in different contexts and that nurses use their technologies with a view to enhance and amplify the knowledge and the autonomy of the profession itself.

Body composition and television viewing among high school adolescents residing within the Tlokwe municipality : PAHL study / P.M. Sathekge.

Sathekge, Petens Maropeng January 2012 (has links)
Television viewing is one of the most easily modifiable causes of obesity among children. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between body composition and TV viewing among adolescents attending high schools in the Tlokwe municipality area of the North West province of South Africa. A cross-sectional study design which is part of the Physical Activity and Health Longitudinal Study (PAHLS) was followed on 154 learners (58 boys and 96 girls) who were aged 14 years in the Tlokwe municipality area. All the learners underwent anthropometric measurements of height, weight, and two skinfolds (triceps and subscapular skinfolds). Percentage body fat (%BF) was calculated from the two skinfolds according to Slaughter‟s et al. (1988) equation. Children were classified into three groups (viz. normal, overweight and obese) according to BMI cut-off point suggested by Cole et al. (2000). Pearson correlation coefficients were used to determine the relationship between television viewing and body composition. The results show respectively high prevalence of overweight and obesity in girls (10.4%; 6.3%) as compared to the prevalence of 5% overweight in boys. With regard to TV viewing, the results show that 54% of the total group watch TV more than two hours a day, while only 11% watched TV less than one hour a day. The results show that the group that watches TV for more than 3 hours had high BMI (21.27kg/m²) and body mass (51.54kg). The group that watches TV for 1-2 hours had low BMI (18.36kg/m²) and body mass (44.79kg). There was a statisitcal significant relationship between BMI and body mass (p=0.001). A significant positive relationship between body mass and TV viewing (r=0.56; p=0.05) in overweight group was found, whilst in the obese group strong significant positive relationship was observed between percentage body fat and TV viewieng (r=0.94; p=0.01). It can be concluded that girls were more overweight and obese respectively as compared to the boys. Furthermore, both boys and girls had high percentages of TV viewing for more than two hours a day. In addition, the results indicated that adolescents who watched TV more than 3 hours are heavier and fatter. Therefore, it is recommended that parents and educational heads should encourage periods of daily physical activity. In addition, it is also important that parents play a more positive role in limiting the amount of hours their children spent watching television. / Thesis (MA (Biokinetics))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2013.

From runner bean to couch potato : youth, inactivity and health

Marshall, Simon J. January 2002 (has links)
There is a growing public health concern over the effects that sedentary lifestyles are having on the health of young people, particularly in relation to overweight and obesity. This thesis presents five studies which examine the prevalence, incidence and determinants of sedentary behaviour among youth. The rationale for eachs tudy derives from a framework of behaviourale. pidemiology applied to physical activity and health. Study I presents four systematic reviews of literature. The first review presents a descriptive epidemiology of youth sedentary behaviour. The second review presents a summary of empirical correlates of television viewing, the most prevalent sedentary behaviour among young people. 'Me third and fourth reviews present quantitative syntheses of empirical relationships between television viewing and body composition (review 3) and sedentary behaviour and physical activity (review 4). Study 2 examines the prevalence and interrelationships among different sedentary behaviours and physical activity in a cross-nationa(l USA & UK) sample of 2,494 youth ages 11-15. Study 3 uses a qualitative strategy to generate a grounded framework from which to understand the choices young people make about how to spend their free-time. Study 4 adopts a micro-behavioural approach for understandingt he incidence and temporal patterning of sedentary behaviour among 162 adolescents (age 13-16). Study 5 presents an evaluation of a behaviour change theory useful for increasing levels of physical activity and reducing sedentary behaviour. Sedentary behaviour and physical activity do not appear to be two sides of the same coin and appear to have different sets of determinants. This is an important finding becausee fforts to increase levels of physical activity may not reduce levels of sedentary behaviour. While television viewing, video games and computer use are consistent referents in the academic and media panic surrounding youth inactivity, it is unlikely that these behaviours play a substantialr ole in epidemiologic trends of adolescent overweight and obesity. Further study should attempt to examine how contemporary lifestyles contribute to the growing prevalence of overweight and obesity among adolescents.
