Is there a benefit of super spikes in long jump performance?

Svensson, Erik January 2023 (has links)
Background and aim The pace of development of distance running shoes has been fast-forward since 2016 when Nike introduced their model Nike Zoom Vaporfly, with an imbedded carbon fiber plate and an advanced newly developed Pebax®-foam. The shoe-development has continued to track events, with the introduction of carbon fiber plate in several shoe-models for running and sprint- events. The research area for track events has not reached the level as for distance running shoes, therefore the aim of this study was to examine the effects on long jump performance when using long jump spikes with (AFT) compared to without (non-AFT) a carbon fiber plate.  Method Nine experienced male (n=6, age 22 ± 4.8 years, body mass 76.4 ± 3.5 kg, height 182 ± 4.9 cm), and female (n=3, age 20.3 ± 3.5 years, body mass 64.8 ± 6.0 kg, height 172 ± 2.0 cm) Swedish long jumpers performed three maximal effort long jumps in AFT and non-AFT long jump shoes. Three-dimensional kinematic data was captured with eight markerless motion capture cameras, and the take-off was performed from a force plate. Run-up velocity was measured using a lidar laser and step characteristics using an optical contact grid. Pearson’s correlation coefficient was calculated for jump distance and maximal run-up velocity and paired samples t-tests and a Wilcoxon rank sum test were conducted to examine differences between the shoes.  Results Peak run-up velocity correlated with jump distance both for AFT (Pearson’s r=0.919, p<0.001) and non-AFT shoes (Pearson’s r=0.910, p<0.001). At a group-level no statistical differences were found between the shoes for the run-up variables. The AFT shoes showed significantly greater horizontal velocity at touchdown (p=0.046) and vertical velocity difference from touchdown to toe-off (p=0.029) compared to the non-AFT shoes. No other significant difference was found on group level for the take-off variables. Conclusion The results in this study did not show a longer jump distance in long jump specific AFT shoes compared to non-AFT on a group level, but individual differences were seen. To further understand the effect of AFT shoes on long jump performance, more studies on different individual characteristics and their relation to long jump performance is needed. Keywords Long jump, super spikes, AFT-shoes, carbon fiber plate, biomechanics. Nyckelord Längdhopp, super spikes, AFT-skor, karbonfiberplatta, biomekanik.

Displacement i hälsenan under löpning med olika skor : Analys med hjälp av speckle tracking-algoritm / Displacement in Achilles Tendon During Running with Different Shoes : Analysis with Speckle Tracking Algorithm

Kaewkam, Natthaphong, Öberg, Joakim January 2023 (has links)
The Achilles tendon plays a crucial role in the motor function of the lower leg, as well as in the motion involved in walking and running. As a result, the Achilles tendon undergoes significant stress during walking and running, which can lead to tears and injuries to the tendon. These tears can occur when the Achilles tendon is deformed associated with physical activity. The deformation of the Achilles tendon is the difference between the relative displacement in the tendon and is an important concept in understanding the etiology of Achilles tendon injuries. The purpose of this thesis is to increase knowledge about the displacement in the Achilles tendon and how it differs during habitual running with different running shoes, including barefoot running. Furthermore, a speckle tracking algorithm that forms the basis for analyzing the displacement in the Achilles tendon is debugged. The work is an extension of an ongoing research collaboration between KTH, GIH, and KI. The first step in the work was to debug and correct the MATLAB program for the speckle tracking algorithm. This was done by changing initial starting values in the algorithm such as the central frequency and the value for the speed of displacement in the Achilles tendon. After choosing a speed of 2 cm/s, the algorithm worked flawlessly. The next step was to execute the program on the ultrasound data for the Achilles tendon previously collected from the research collaboration. The algorithm was run for test subjects 17, 18, and 21 for habitual running style with three different running shoes and barefoot. This resulted in mean value curves for superficial and deep displacement in the Achilles tendon being plotted, with their minimum and maximum values being compared. After comparing the difference between the minimum and maximum values of superficial and deep displacement across all running shoes as well as barefoot, the following observations were made. Running with traditional shoes caused the highest deep displacement, followed by shoes with carbon fiber soles, minimalist shoes, and barefoot running. The shoe that caused the highest superficial displacement was shoes with carbon fiber soles, followed by traditional shoes, minimalist shoes, and running barefoot. The comparison was not based on any statistical basis since only three test subjects were analyzed. This implies some uncertainty as to which type of shoe causes the highest and lowest displacement. Aside from this uncertainty, it can be noted that the results from previous studies have findings that suggest similar insights.

A study about foot scanning technology : How foot scanning is perceived by and can affect customers' return habits

Lundvall, Sofie January 2022 (has links)
In this study, the use of foot scanning to reduce returns of shoes purchased online and consumers' attitudes towards and knowledge of foot scanning have been investigated. Foot scanning is a technique used for scanning feet. After the foot has been scanned, a 3D model of what the foot looks like is created and that model is then used for various purposes. The area that this study has focused on is the online trade of shoes. The method that the study used is mixed with an inductive approach. The experience was gathered through a quantitative survey study of consumers and a semi-structured qualitative interview with a company. After the data collection, the results were reported and analyzed before a discussion was carried out where conclusions were drawn in relation to the research questions. The study shows that foot scanning has a positive effect on the returns of shoes. There were fewer returns with the help of the foot scanning technology. Regarding the consumers' level of knowledge and attitude towards foot scanning, the study shows that they have a low level of knowledge on the subject, but have a willingness to use the technology. In conclusion, foot scanning shows great potential in the future and with further research on the subject, this study can be used as an indication of whether implementing foot scanning in a company is the next step.

Vliv obuvi na deformity nohy u žen - role sestry v prevenci / The effect of footwear on deformity of the foot in a woman - the role of the nurse in prevention

MLEJNKOVÁ, Natálie January 2019 (has links)
The topic of this diploma thesis is "Influence of footwear on foot deformities in women - the role of nurses in prevention". The theoretical part is devoted to the foot anatomy, it describes the issue of heels on the foot and represents the Giraffe certification. The practical part of the qualitative research shows the role of nurses in preventing foot deformities for patients. This thesis has two goals. To find out what footwear affects the deformities of the legs in women and to find out what role the nurse plays in preventing this issue. The research questions are 1. What is the importance of wearing high-heeled shoes for women and how will this be reflected later? 2. What role do nurses attribute to the prevention in this issue? Data collection was collected by semi-structured interviews with nurses in the orthopaedic ward and orthopaedic clinics. The research sample consists of 20 respondents, the choice was deliberate and formed by snowball sampling. In February 2019, data was collected, which was subsequently terminated at the moment of theoretical saturation. The interview covered themes: wearing high-heeled shoes, leg deformities caused by high-heeled shoes, nurse-led prevention and education. The results show that only a fraction of nurses adhere to the role of a nurse who helps patients prevent leg deformities. The rest of the nurses leave prevention and education to doctors. This diploma thesis presents as a work output a poster, which can be an information material for nurses from the orthopaedic clinics and beds. The output of the thesis is an educational poster that will reflect the entire nursing issue in prevention (the role of a nurse, the deformity of the feet caused by high-heeled shoes, etc.).

In Strategic Design, the product is considered as part of a system - the Product - Service System - expanding its conception and providing design with a strategic perspective. From the perspective of Strategic Design, the point of sale, as a space of several interactions between the organization and the user, can be designed in a global way, so that individuals enjoy experiences that aim to create emotional bonds, which includes all forms user stimulation. Among the various approaches that allow working the relationship between design projects and user experience, this study adopts the perspective of Jordan (1999) on the personality of the product. This conception includes the use of a technique called Assigning Personality to Product (APP) which proposes that an understanding of the artifacts as living entities, endowed with personalities - being attributed to human personality traits associated with their aesthetic qualities. Specifically, the sound dimension of the artifact “high heel shoes" - resulting from the interaction between different types of soles with specific floors - and the attribution of personality to these sound stimuli consist on the focus of this work, which aims to explore the possibilities of qualification of the user experience in female footwear retail stores through sound, taking in consideration the understanding of the following problem: how Strategic Design, based on the understanding of the sound dimension of the personality of the product “high heel shoes", may contribute to the design on the sales point of view? To do so, we rescue visions of some authors that talk about the main issues to be addressed here: Design Strategy, Product - Service System and Design for Experience, whose focus will be the approach of Jordan (1999) with regard to the concept of "product personality". Thus , through an experimental research - carried out on the basis of sound stimuli arising from the interaction between different types of soles and floors , we intended to understand the relationship between sound and the personality of the object “high heel shoes”. These perceptions may contribute to the design of retail stores, as the sound interaction between these shoes with different types of floors can be seen as a trigger for positive experiences. The results indicate that it is possible to manipulate the personality of the product by sounds coming from the interaction between the materials used in it and in the environment. Thus, this study reinforces the importance of sound as a dimension capable of assigning personalities to the product, brokering and favoring therefore the experience involved in the iteration user-product-environment.

Conforto térmico nos edifícios das indústrias de calçados de Jaú / Thermal comfort in footwear industry from Jaú

Prado, Monica Faria de Almeida 25 April 2012 (has links)
This paper discusses the thermal performance obtained in industrial buildings in the footwear sector, given the importance of obtaining favorable environmental conditions for the execution of activities through an architecture suited to the climate context. Thus, the objective of this research is to evaluate the thermal comfort conditions provided by the buildings of the footwear industries of Jaú city, an important industrial pole. It is characterized the typologies of building\'s construction regarding its geometry, materials and ventilation system. The passive strategies for achieving thermal comfort in the factory sheds are identified and evaluated using the recommendations present in the NBR 15220. To evaluate the thermal comfort conditions it was measured the environmental variables, and the temperature was examined under conditions of thermal acceptability, as established by ASHRAE 55-2010. In order to estimate the thermal sensation of the users, the PMV and PPD indices were used. Also, a questionnaire was applied in order to check the level of employee satisfaction with the working environment. The results show that most of the buildings presents a typology similar with a rectangular geometry and ventilation obtained through frames at the facades. The absence of different passive strategies results in a building with a low thermal inertia and vulnerable to the external weather conditions, and in hot periods, the internal temperature was above 30°C, and during colder periods it was lower than 15°C. The thermal sensation of users in most of the period of the working shift matches the thermal discomfort to the heat, especially in the afternoon, and the percentage of discontentment exceeds 80%. This way, there is a need to optimize the adoption of passive strategies, to provide better thermal conditions of work. For this purpose, simple solutions that provide improvements to the thermal performance of buildings are given, examples: the use of systems which allows evaporative cooling and expansion of openings areas for the ventilation of the building.

Brand personification through music as brand knowledge : Learning from the perspective of consumers of hip-hop music in Sweden, on the associations of music in sneaker brands

Leyva Navarro, Jose Enrique January 2011 (has links)
Background. Previous research on the investigation of brand personality (BP) can be found to use the personification metaphor of brands through celebrities, occupations and animals. Brand image research aims to discover the human characteristics attached to a brand. In this regard, the author suggests that as music can tell much of the personality of a person, then it would be possible to know the personality of a brand through music. The rationale behind is that music elicits “extramusical” information, such as emotions, values, dress codes and stereotypes of people; in relation to musical-genres. Purpose. This research aims to explore how music can help to produce brand knowledge. In particular how the extramusical information conveyed by musical-genres can be used as language to talk about the personality of a brand. Methodology. The empirical research was developed within an Interpretive research paradigm to learn from the perspective of consumers of hip-hop music in Sweden, how brand knowledge can be obtained from music as cognitive schema (CS). The data was gathered using a mixed-method research design. Two different projective techniques were employed in group sessions. On one session (N=11), visual collages were used to visually represent the brands using images of musicians and their description with brand personality traits. The second session (N=12) consisted of an associative task using music, followed by the application of the brand personality scale. The interpretation and analysis of findings was done through the triangulation of the methods’ data. Conclusions. The use of music genres as CS to produce brand knowledge can provide insightful information on the lifestyle and type of users that buy, consume or wear the brand. Extramusical information helps understand characteristics of BP through the lifestyle and profile of the musician or music-fan that was associated with the brand. In particular, brand knowledge can be gained in terms of demographic and psychographic characteristics associated to the brand. However, several theoretical implications for further research were identified in order to consolidate the BP/consumer/music relationship.

Entwicklung eines dynamischen Tests zur Prüfung der Rückfußdämpfung von Laufschuhen mittels biomechanischer Messmethoden / Development of a dynamic test procedure to investigate rearfoot cushion properties of running shoes based on biomechanical data

Heidenfelder, Jens 09 May 2011 (has links) (PDF)
