On the evolution of atmosphere-ocean oxygenation and plate tectonic processes as recorded in Paleoproterozoic sedimentary basins

Partin, Camille Ann January 2013 (has links)
Important geochemical and tectonic events in the Paleoproterozoic Era lay the foundation for the status and operation of the modern Earth, including the initial rise of atmospheric oxygen paving the path for animal evolution, and the emergence of modern plate tectonic processes leading to the amalgamation of the Canadian Shield (Laurentia). Rudimentary geological and geochronological documentation of Paleoproterozoic sedimentary basins is the foundation from which we can ask larger questions about geochemical changes or plate tectonic events on the evolving Earth, since those questions are largely answered by analyzing the sedimentary record. This thesis outlines the stratigraphy, detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology, elemental and isotopic geochemistry, and basin evolution of the Paleoproterozoic Penrhyn and Piling basins on the Rae craton in Arctic Canada, which record important tectonic and geochemical events on both a regional and global scale. The concentration of the redox-sensitive trace element, U, in seawater has not been constant throughout geologic time and is linked to changes in oceanic and atmospheric oxygen content. Secular variations in the record of U contents of shales and iron formations indicate that the redox state of the atmosphere-ocean system after the Great Oxidation Event (GOE) was more dynamic than previously thought. Trends towards lower oxygen content recorded after ~2.05 Ga in the middle Proterozoic suggest that oxygen level decreased. This is contrary to traditional models assuming unidirectional atmospheric oxygen rise throughout the Proterozoic. The data demonstrate the earliest signal of oxidative U cycling, manifested in 2.47 - 2.43 Ga iron formations, and show that oxygenation was a protracted process initiated shortly after the end of the Archean. It has been proposed that a global and long-lived magmatic and tectonic shutdown event from ~2.45 to 2.22 Ga played a causal role in the GOE, since it overlaps the time interval in which atmospheric oxygen initially rose on Earth. Coupled U-Pb, Hf, and O isotope data on magmatic and detrital zircon determine that plate tectonic processes continued to operate during this interval. It is argued instead that plate tectonic processes are necessary to promote conditions favorable for atmospheric oxygen to rise.

No. of bitstreams: 1 4811.pdf: 907758 bytes, checksum: 8839b04b7f1af2b8827dda89f65c7929 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-12-14 / The host institution is one of the lines of political action to guarantee the rights of children and adolescents, whose character is provisional and exceptional form of transition to reintegration and family or for integration in a foster family. Usually occurs when families are considered unable to provide child care, or when they have behaviors that put at risk the full development of children. Both the removal of the child or adolescent from family and his dismissal of the institution are made by the Government, however, there is a lack of effective public policies and scientific research data that cover the issue of institutional shutdown, more specifically. The present study aimed to: a) describe the process of institutional shutdown according to the opinion of adolescents who lived in a situation of institutional care for an extended period and the leaders; b) describe the operation of a host institution. This was a qualitative, exploratory. The study included two leaders of the two institutions reception and six individuals who remained in a state of Reception beyond the time allowed by law, and who completed two years of majority, including motive, which led to the shutdown. The instruments used for data collection were: Interview Script 1) The characteristics of the host institution and Interview Script 2) Shutdown Institutional, both were applied with the leaders of institutions and even Home, Interview Script 3) The Consequences Off the Institutional conducted with former accepted. The questions of the interview scripts were submitted before the application, the judges pointed suggestions to better understand the context. The application of the interviews took place at different times and places previously chosen by the participants. By means of the instruments were performed quantitative analyzes, obtained from the defined categories, with the main parameter to content analysis. The results indicated that in some respects the institutions surveyed described themselves differently, therefore, had different types of conduct with regard to the implementation of some of its functions, humanization of the shutdown process, preparation gradual for that time, maintenance of family ties, family support for restructuring, encouraging interaction with other families, participation in the services offered by the local community. Other aspects described by the Institutional leaders have been characterized equally and refer to similar residential maintenance of emotional bonds between siblings, attendance at small groups, among others. Most adolescents showed that the shutdown was a moment Institutional permeated by feelings of sadness, fear, insecurity, memories, and the individual is ready or not to experience this moment and its consequences were related to the difficulty in getting a job, live alone, keep themselves financially. It is concluded that there is need for specific policies that cover the issue of Institutional shutdown, to support the teen financially, emotionally, socially, before, during and after this procedure. Still, training for all social actors involved in institutional care situation for better care and understanding of the context.

The Effects of an Extended Power Plant Shutdown on the Florida Manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) in Port Everglades, Florida

Grissett, Christopher 01 November 2014 (has links)
Florida manatees (Trichechus manatus latirostris) seek out warmer waters during winter months when ambient water temperatures drop below 20 degrees Celsius. Over time, manatees have discovered artificial warm water sites from power plant discharges in addition to natural sites such as springs and passive thermal refugia (PTRs). The Florida Power and Light (FPL) Port Everglades power plant in Broward County is one such artificial warm water refuge used by manatees. This plant was shutdown on July 16, 2013, and is expected to remain off line for at least three years during demolition and construction of a new facility. The purpose of this study was to determine changes in habitat usage and other responses to the disruption of a warm water refugia (the closure of a power plant) on Florida manatees within the greater Port Everglades region. From November 15, 2013 to March 31, 2014, manatees were counted at the site via shore line and aerial surveys. Environmental data were collected to determine variables correlated to manatee presence and absense. Two manatees were radio-tagged using remote sensing devices in an effort to identify alternative warm water refugia and feeding areas. Data were collected from state and local organizations and photo-identified manatees were used to analyze for trends in cold stress syndrome (CSS) lesions and watercraft scarring. Results confirmed that manatee presence was positively correlated with heater outlet temperature. Differences did not exist between the results of survey methods between the FPL Port Everglades (PE) and Fort Lauderdale (FL) power plant sites, however, differrences in the aerial survey counts showed an increased presence at the FL site during the colder month of January 2014. Data from tagging identified one manatee that preferred the FL site while another preferred PE, presumably due to more convenient access to feeding grounds in Biscayne Bay. Data from mortality events indicated a low number of CSS and watercraft deaths in Broward County as compared to other parts of the state of Florida. Further monitoring of the study area for the remainder of the shutdown period is recommended, as are improvements in survey design, expansion to include additional environmental data from FL, continued mortality statistic analysis and locating possible PTRs.

A generic approach to the automated startup and shutdown of processing units using sequential function charts

Du Plessis, Lourens 08 July 2005 (has links)
Automated start–up and shutdown procedures increase the profitability and safety of a process, but are difficult to implement due to the complex nature of the concepts that must be incorporated. Generic components used specifically for the implementation of automated startup and shutdown procedures were defined to streamline the implementation process. The generic components developed are based on Sequential Function Charts and were applied to the startup of a fixed–bed gasification unit, for which a dynamic simulation model was developed. The application showed that the automated startup can be defined by a few generic components and that the flexibility of the startup procedure is increased through the incorporation of a fault accommodation module. The use of a visual–based definition of sequential processes increases the understanding of the complex scheduling procedures as well as the efficiency of the development of these automated procedures. In addition, iterative learning was incorporated into the generic definition to optimise controller performance during the non–linear phases of operation. / Dissertation (MEng (Control Engineering))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Chemical Engineering / MEng / Unrestricted

Numerical study on hydraulic verticallift gate during shutdown process

Sund, Mattias, Magnusson, Fredrik January 2014 (has links)
China is undergoing a rapid increase in their development of hydropower.Due to this rapid increase, China has become one of theleading countries in technological solutions regarding the constructionof the hydropower plant. The hydro resources in China are extensivebut building a new power plant is laborious and costly. Upgrading anexisting power plant is therefore of interest. Increasing the volume flowis one way, but this can bring problems to the hydraulic structures. The design of hydraulic gates is crucial for operating a hydropowerplant safely. An emergency gate is especially important as it protectsthe turbine situated downstream of the gate. In this study, a numericalsimulation of the shutdown process of a hydraulic vertical lift gatewas conducted. The simulation was done in two dimensions using theReynolds Navier Stokes Equations (RANS), together with the RNGk ≠ ‘ turbulence model and the Volume of Fluid method (VOF). Thegoal was to extract the pressure distribution around the gate, subsequently, attaining the hydrodynamic forces and also to observe andanalyze the flow surrounding the gate. The simulation was comparedwith existing experimental data, from a 1/18 scale model, for validation.Once the model was validated, eight different cases were tested toimprove the operating conditions. The closing speed of the gate andthe gate bottom angle was altered in order to reduce the down-pullforce and undesirable flow phenomena. It was found that lowering thegate speed to 8.1 m/min would have positive effect. As the gate closesrelatively fast with reduced forces compared to a faster speed, and withless induced vibrations than with a slower speed. Changing the gatebottom angle from 9¶ to 30¶, would also have a considerable positiveinfluence of the lowered gate vibrations. However changing the bottomangle needs to be more thoroughly studied concerning structuraleffects.

Stratégie syndicale et fermeture d'usine en contexte de mondialisation : le cas Paccar inc., usine Kenworth de Sainte-Thérèse

Laliberté, Kim 06 1900 (has links)
This thesis illustrates the evolution of the strategy used by the TCA-Québec Union, local unit 728 representing the employees of Kenworth in Sainte-Thérèse, from the plant shutdown in 1996 to its reopening in 1999. The literature shows that the economic market globalisation has forced the trade unions to reconsider their strategic approach in the collective bargaining process. In some cases, their survival depends on it. The case study presented in this work identifies five key events when strategic adjustments were made by the trade union during this highly mediatised conflict: the collective bargaining, the failure of these negotiations which led to a general strike, the plant shutdown, the announcement of the plant’s reopening as well as its actual reopening. The results presented in correlation to the David Weil Model (1994) detail the strategic planning of these five key events using an integrated process which is composed of three major steps: formulating, implementing and evaluating the strategy. The facts are assembled chronologically while exposing the modifications to the local union`s strategy using indicators developed with Weil’s model external factors (1994) such as the technological, legal and social environments, the member-led priorities, the distribution of the union’s resources as well as the cost-benefit advantages.

Telemetrie a dispečerské řízení mřížové sítě nízkého napětí / Telemetry and Dispatch Control of Low Voltage Grid

Gála, Michal January 2019 (has links)
The contents of this thesis are the introduction to mesh grids, the method of dispatch control of these grids and the description of technology used in mesh grids distribution nodes in the city of Brno. This thesis also describes low voltage switchgears used in these types of grids. The development of dispatch control in ECD company is also mentioned. The development describes the grid dispatch control methods prior to implementing the OMS system and the changes which followed after the implementation. The process improvements of the new system resulting from this thesis can be found in this thesis as well. The improvements are incorporated in the OMS system and are used for more efficient dispatch control of the low voltage mesh grids. There is a more detailed analysis of the mesh grid Brno – Bohunice in the practical part of this thesis. The practical part contains analyses of mesh grids stabilized conditions measurements and analyses of mesh grids fault conditions measurements. The analyses assess the power load in transformers, minimal and maximal phase current and maximal power load at the time they were observed. The analysis of the measured data is accompanied by the assessment of differences in current phase measurements and differences in voltage phase and combined measurements. The result, based on the analysis and collection of the data, is a proposition of adding switchgears for the support of the dispatch control of the mesh grid Brno – Bohunice. In the summary of the thesis there is a comparison of the result of the factual and theoretical analysis. An experimental model of the mesh grid Brno – Bohunice was created in PS CAD software as a part of the theoretical analysis.

Nedstängningen av USA:s federala regering 2018–2019 : - En studie av Framing av Fox News och CNN / Shutdown of the US federal government 2018-2019 : - A study of Framing of Fox News and CNN

Leandersson, Pontus January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to study how the latest U.S government shutdown was framed and what kind of framing was used in two major news outlets, Fox News and CNN. The paper ask two questions first, how is the shutdown presented in CNN and Fox News coverage? And second, what examples of framing can be seen in the different company’s coverage? To find this out the paper uses a qualitative text analysis of several news articles from these outlets with framing theory as a theoretical background for the paper. The paper reaches the conclusion that for the most part in the more news focused articles both CNN and Fox News portray the shutdown as a conflict between different actors as well as a problem meanwhile the opinion pieces show similar framing but differ in that they often include a pro/anti Trump framing besides the conflict framing to the articles.
