Pedroso, Anderson Beltrame January 2013 (has links)
This dissertation talks about the experience of the Casa dos Cata-Ventos, a proposal to work with children and families in social vulnerability developed in Porto Alegre/RS. Aims to present the historical setting in which the action of Casa dos Cata-Ventos occurs and the foundations of the bet we do. This working model is inspired by Maison Verte, created by Françoise Dolto in Paris, and the Casa da Árvore, an NGO active in the city of Rio de Janeiro. In the first chapter I contextualize the discussion by presenting a brief history of the subject that, although does not ambition to constitute a genealogy, aims to present the discursive field's breaks that takes the forms of child care as an object. I take off from what determined the conditions of possibility of education as a strategy of citizens formation and the strength of work necessary to maintain the capitalist mode of production. The second and third essays lie more properly on the experience field of the Casa dos Cata-Ventos. The second one presents the experience and the roots that have inspired it. In it I discuss what I call a bet on the political dimension of playing, recovering the concept of playing in psychoanalysis - emphasizing the contributions of D. W. Winnicott and Ricardo Rodulfo - and the vita activa's phenomenology, exhibited by Hannah Arendt in The Human Condition. The third essay is inspired by a group of scenes experienced in the Casa dos Cata-Ventos and seeks to advance the discussion of a territory clinic, following a few lines of subjectivity composition which are formed in deprivation areas, where constitutional guarantees of rights do not actualize, leaving a vast field for that resentment is structured as a survival strategy and that violence is imposed in a massive and authoritarian way. I seek, however, support in the literature of Guimarães Rosa to show the vanishing points of this form of subjectivity capturing.

Evaluating the health effects of a social intervention in older people using an experimental approach

Johnston, Elizabeth Elinor January 2008 (has links)
Background: there is limited research to show that a social intervention such as increasing income improves health, especially as this relates to older people. It is known that poverty is a real problem for many older people in Northern Ireland. One reason for this is that older people often do not claim the financial benefits for which they are entitled. This is a randomised controlled study that sought to investigate the health effects of an increased uptake of social security benefits. Methods: The aims of this study were to find out if an increase in income through the take up of unclaimed financial benefits lead to a significant improvement in the health status of older people and discover if this was maintained over a reasonable period of time. This was a randomised control trial based in the community. Patients were recruited from 11 general practices in South Down, Craigavon, Fermanagh and Tyrone. The intervention consisted of a benefit assessment followed by assistance completing the benefit application. The control group received the assessment but were not give assistance with the application. Instead they were given a list of agencies where help with the application could be found. A range of health, psycho-social and financial outcome was measured. Results: Of the 2180 patients who were sent invitation letters 300 agreed to a benefits assessment. 189 enrolled in the study and 149 were followed up at six months. A total of 89 patients received additional weekly benefits amounting to approximately £3277.19 per annum (£63 per week). A further 13 patients received one off payments totaling £5,731.01. All but two patients received their benefits within three months of assessment. While analysis showed trends suggesting greater improvements in social support and depression scores for the intervention group when compared with the controls the difference were not statistically significant. This is probably due to the following factors. The sample size in this study was small because of problems with the recruitment and screening of patients. More patients in the control group claimed benefits than had been anticipated and as a result it was difficult to detect differences between the two groups. Discussion: Valuable lessons have been leant and modifications to the study methodology have been suggested that will be of use to other researchers attempting to undertake similar studies in the UK.

Between words and social intervention: analysis of an individual trajectory in an environmental education action interpreted from the philosophy of praxis

Marco Antonio Sampaio Malagodi 24 April 2009 (has links)
This research addresses an effort of comprehension and elaboration of the dialectics of an action developed by the author in the field of environmental education, giving rise to the emerging of challenges of integration between theory and practice in scientific production. Although it has not been structured as an action research, the investigation resulted in the clarification of the distance that separates it from that methodology. Initially, the object of research was the authors pathway through the Training course for sustainability local agents (2003-2004) promoted by University of São Paulo (USP) and funded by a Brazilian company from pulp and paper industry. The first intention was to demonstrate the argument that the little dedication to theoretical dimension within that practice (represented by inaccuracies in the use of words employed) could indicate a meaningful obstruction of dialectical relationship between theory and practice in forms of author\'s thought and language, hindering the critical reflexivity which constituted the target to achieve in this formative process and encouraging. Following the tracks of pedagogy of praxis, a philological study was developed, starting from the notions of dialectics, philosophy of praxis and pedagogy, questioning the concept of praxis. This investigation has led the researcher to revisit some trajectories of his own initiation in the field of environmental education. Among the interpretations that have become possible in the argumentation of the thesis, it was thought that for the encouragement of a critical and emancipatory branch in environmental education, it is important to understand the marxist legacy present there as philosophy of praxis, and it is equally relevant to understand the criticism that this inheritance has received during the twentieth century. Among them, the contributions of Cornelius Castoriadis and Jürgen Habermas were highlighted, the latter influenced by pragmatism and committed in overcoming the paradigm of subjectivity - the philosophy of consciousness - towards the paradigm of mutual understanding - a philosophy of intersubjectivity. On the other hand, it was realized that the relevance of social intervention for such stream in environmental education can be better accomplished by understanding and questioning the proposal of action research of Kurt Lewin (influenced by pragmatism) through the perspective of philosophy of praxis, as in René Barbier. In the end, the author concludes that the concept of praxis understood as the intersubjective action that encourages both individual and collective autonomy enabled him to reinterpret his history as a necessary stage of the very dialectics he intended to comprehend, thus redefining the very thesis he sought to demonstrate, since the relative clearance on dialectical relationship between theory and practice in his educational action could only be partially demonstrated: a full statement is included in the challenge of building a training process inserted into an action research, in dialogue with the discussion presented here.

Evaluation of the Soul City HIV and AIDS social intervention programme for the youth in the Northern Cape South Africa

Le Tape, Andre Rhyno January 2017 (has links)
The goal of the study was to evaluate the content, implementation and applicability of the Soul City social intervention programme (SCI programme) about HIV and AIDS targeted at the youth in the Northern Cape from an ecosystems perspective. The goal of this study was achieved through the realisation of the objectives of the study. The objectives of the study were: To describe the phenomenon of HIV and AIDS among the youth in the Northern Cape, South Africa from an ecosystems perspective; to describe the NSP 2012-2016 and the Provincial Strategic Plan (PSP) for HIV and AIDS in South Africa; to describe and critically analyse the SCI programme's focus on the youth from the ecosystems perspective; to evaluate the content of the SCI programme for the youth with regard to HIV and AIDS in the Northern Cape in the context of the NSP 2012-2016 on HIV and AIDS from the field workers' perspective; to evaluate the implementation of the SCI programme for the youth on HIV and AIDS in the Northern Cape in the context of the NSP 2012-2016 on HIV and AIDS from the perspective of the youth as service users, and lastly, to provide guidelines for the content, applicability, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the SCI programme for the youth with regard to HIV and AIDS in the context of the NSP 2012-2016, in order to enhance efforts to mitigate the impact of HIV and AIDS among the youth in the Northern Cape. Furthermore, a mixed-methods research approach was adopted to achieve the research goal. The quantitative and qualitative findings are described in Chapters 6 and 7 respectively. Triangulation, as mixed-method design, was utilised in this study. This enabled the researcher to produce complete and well-validated conclusions. The method of data collection for the part of the study about the youth was a group-administered questionnaire. For the qualitative part of this study, semi-structured interviews, with an interview schedule, were utilised to collect data related to the contents, applicability, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the SCI programme from trained field workers working in the youth sector and specialising in HIV and AIDS. The quantitative data was analysed using both descriptive and association statistical analyses. In the present study, the researcher strived to ensure a high degree of face validity by allowing experts in the field, for example, social workers practising in the field of HIV and AIDS, to scrutinise the research instrument as part of the pilot test. The questionnaire was piloted with 20 youths to enhance both face and content validity further. In the current study, an acceptable degree of reliability was prioritised and therefore a Cronbach alpha coefficient of 0.70 for all categories of the questionnaire was sought. The qualitative data of the semi-structured interviews with Soul City programme implementers was analysed using thematic analysis. An independent reviewer reviewed the theme generation and analysis to ensure consistency or the interrater reliability of the findings. This aided the researcher to identify patterns or themes from direct quotations and to provide rich data representation. Verbatim quotations from the interviews were used to support the themes. To ensure data trustworthiness, a high premium was placed on credibility, transferability, conformability and dependability. Analyses of three different sources of data, namely the literature review, the youth programme attendees/recipients and interviews with Soul City field workers were undertaken to answer the following research question. "To what extent is the content and implementation of the Soul City social intervention programme applicable to the youth in the Northern Cape?" Subsequently, the sub-question of the study was: "Does the Soul City social intervention programme take the different levels of the ecosystems perspective into account regarding programme content and implementation?" Several key findings were made in the quantitative part of the study, with nine sections of the questionnaire which focussed on: the Biographic details of respondents; Objectives of the Soul City programme for the youth in the Northern Cape; Applicability and relevance of the content of the Soul City Programme; Knowledge gained through attending Soul City; Attitudinal change; Programme delivery; Programme content; Programme facilitation methods and general aspects. Key findings were that there was no statistical association found between any of the variables in most sections of the questionnaire except for combinations of five questions in sections D and G. There was a statistical association found with regard to age where the respondents indicated that the SCP contributed to them achieving their personal life goals. Also in Section D there was a statistical association found where the respondents could see the impact of the SCP on their lives. There was a statistical association found between where respondents indicated that the SCP should focus on ways/strategies to fight poverty in their communities and also when they indicated that the SCP should focus on involving important people/stakeholders such as youth leaders. Lastly, there was a statistical association found between where the respondents indicated that the capacity of the youth in the community to fight the further spread of HIV and AIDS could be built by visiting the community. From an ecosystems perspective, the SCP programme appeared to be influenced by or aligned to micro-, meso-, exo- and macrolevel factors with varying degrees of success and focus areas. The programme's exolevel focus appeared to be more prominent and to a lesser degree the macro- and microlevels. The research found that the SCP is relatively effective regarding programme content and facilitation methods albeit to a limited degree. Furthermore, what was repeatedly clear was a need for the SCP's programme continuation and sustainability, because adequate effort had not been made for this despite the programmes' apparent value when it was operational. / Thesis (DPhil)--University of Pretoria, 2017. / Social Work and Criminology / DPhil / Unrestricted

Classroom behaviour management to support children's social, emotional, and behavioural development

Nye, Elizabeth January 2017 (has links)
Introduction: Children's social, emotional, and behavioural difficulties are associated with reduced academic performance, stressed teacher-child relationships, and other negative academic and life outcomes. The Incredible Years Teacher Classroom Management (IY TCM) programme is one intervention developed to address problematic behaviours via training teachers to use positive and proactive management strategies. The overall aim of this DPhil is to use the Incredible Years Teacher Classroom Management programme as a case study for applying mixed methods at the systematic review level to ascertain what is known about both the programme's effectiveness and how people experience the course, and subsequently to use the systematic review's findings as a springboard (rather than as an end goal) for more exploratory research into 'for whom' the programme might work. Method: Study One is a mixed methods systematic review of IY TCM. It applied multilevel meta-analysis to RCT outcome data and grounded theory meta-synthesis to interview and focus group data on stakeholders' experiences of IY TCM. Quantitative and qualitative findings were cross-synthesised and mapped using an integrative grid. Study Two moves the field forward by filling a gap in the evidence base, as identified in Study One. Semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted with special educational needs coordinators (SENCos) across Devon, exploring the acceptability and appropriateness of expanding IY TCM to the subgroup of children with special educational needs (SEN) in mainstream schools. Data were analysed thematically and mapped onto IY TCM content. Results: In Study One, nine studies reported across 14 papers met inclusion criteria for either quantitative or qualitative strands of this systematic review. Multilevel meta-analysis of RCTs (n=4) indicated that the programme produced teacher- and child-level results in the desired directions. Clear trends across all measured outcomes favoured the intervention group over the treatment-as-usual comparison. Qualitative meta-synthesis (n=5) illuminated a cyclical learning process and broader conceptualisation of teacher and child outcomes than was evident in the quantitative evidence. Notably, RCT data on teacher outcomes were limited to self-reported or observed behaviours, while teachers described other benefits from IY TCM including increased knowledge and emotional well-being. Cross-synthesis of findings from the two review strands highlighted harmony across the RCT and qualitative evidence but also a number of areas in which constructs that were prioritised by one type of research were not integrated into the other. Study Two generated classroom management strategies from SENCos, which aligned closely with strategies taught in IY TCM, indicating that IY TCM would be both acceptable and applicable (if not sufficient) for use when working with children identified with SEN and behavioural difficulties in schools. Discussion: Based on the positive effects of implementing IY TCM despite very few studies to power analyses, the programme appears to offer tangible benefits to both teachers and children. It is possible that results are underestimated due to limited types of outcomes measured and absence of experiential data from additional stakeholders (e.g., parents). Depending on current provision of special educational needs services, schools operating inclusion models are likely to find these strategies beneficial for children identified with SEN, and this subgroup should be explicitly examined in future IY TCM studies.

Bíblia, história e política: a bíblia como projeto político-religioso

Mario de Mello Souza 22 December 2010 (has links)
The present research tries to understand the Bible text as a religious-political project in three different historical contexts where the biblical text was used as an instrument of social and ideological intervention. The first context studied is the period of king Josiah, who used the Deuteronomic Law as a unifying political factor. Then, the literary production of the exilic period is analysed, specially the Priest Code and the Deuteronomistic History, as well as the groups behind these texts. These documents with their dreams and proposals were of great influence in the whole Persian period. Thirdly, the Chronistic History is presented as a religious-political system of the Second Temple. At last, the research focuses on the final composition of the Pentateuch as the Law of the post-exilic Jewish community. The research tries, thus, to identify the whole range of political and ideological aspects woven in the relevant biblical texts of each period.

Batista, Jonathas Carvalho 03 March 2010 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Jonathas Carvalho Batista.pdf: 385365 bytes, checksum: e1f80421cad3efa579e57bbf10a749dd (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-03-03 / This work has the objective of presenting e proposing a dialectic reflection of the social Cosmo - vision from the Baptist people of São Paulo as a social entity. In other words, what is the social praxis adopted for the group as an active social unit in search for a conciliation of the Baptist conceptual thinking in Brazil, essentially in Sao Paulo, being the study object of this academic research in its developing applicative. This research has also the objective to promote a deep analysis of the theme presenting a real projection through Field research developed and promoted exclusively for this purpose, where the author tries to investigate how the relation between comprehension and action specially the models of social intervention adopted. However this analysis is in need of a reading spot , a horizon, a path for the research. As a theoretical reference the author adopted the Italian thinker and philosopher Antonio Gramsci, through which the analytical perspective develops in a particular manner the process of dialectic interpretation of the work. To understand the cosmo vision of a religious group as conduct line of a social intervention process (in a logical sense) results in the central objective of this work even when associated to an exterior analysis perspective (Gramsci), where this analysis demonstrates the possibility of unifying intentions and needs.

Curt, Charlotte 08 1900 (has links)
This dissertation focuses on social intervention through dance. This unique intervention method is studied from the perspective of social inequalities and well-being. To this end, a case study is conducted within Prima Danse, a non-profit organization in Montreal. The main objective is to determine the contributions and limitations of social intervention through dance. In order to determine the extent to which this type of intervention can have an impact on the social inequalities and well-being, dance workshops offered to vulnerable clienteles are studied to determine the extent to which they fit, through their relationship with the participants, into a "global approach". Such an approach would take into account the five dimensions of well-being identified by McAll and colleagues (2014): the material, relational, bodily, temporal and decision-making dimensions. In relation to this last dimension, it will be determined whether the dance workshops are a factor of empowerment and/or the development of the participants' power to act (Bacqué, 2006; 2015; Le Bossé, 2003). This qualitative research is based on participant observations in different dance workshops and on semi-directed interviews. Thanks to 13 interviews, the participants' individual feelings and representations of the dance workshops are related to the reflexivity (Bertucci, 2009) that the practitioners have about the actions they carry out. In a perspective of co-construction of knowledge (Gardien, 2017), a central place is given to the experiential knowledge (Racine, 2000) of the people. In this way, this research allows for a better understanding of the realities experienced by people and the processes at work within social intervention systems.
